Stay Safe View and follow campus safety guidelines at nmc.edu/keep-safe and nmc.edu/safety-protocols.

As we move forward from the challenges of the pandemic, we have taken the time to put in place a cutting-edge initiative. We are excited to announce that we are implementing a new registration system in a few months. One where you will be able to shop and register for classes much easier – with new functions like household portals, waitlists, instructor portals and much more. The new registration system will be fully implemented by the end of this year, so when you enroll for classes beginning in 2022, you’ll create a new profile for yourself or your household. Thus, kudos to the NMC implementation team for carrying out this robust undertaking! Another change (coming in December) is the retirement of EES staff member, Maureen Carlson, after 29 years of service and excellence – sad for us, but a new adventure in life for her. Maureen has produced 116 of these catalogs over the years, in addition to countless flyers, brochures, postcards, e-newsletters, ads, press releases and Facebook posts. Not only will we miss her great work, but our team will deeply miss Maureen with her keen ability to balance creativity with practicality and production with process. So, enjoy Maureen’s final catalog by finding interesting classes and challenging ideas to pursue: • Wine Tasting & Appreciation (pg. 40) • Opportunities to skill up & retool at work (pg. 4) • Coffee Chats – a lively Friday morning series (pg. 61)

“I started the Business Development Certificate program because as an artist, COVID-19 caused a drastic shift in how I was doing business. I could no longer attend art fairs in person, and have had to focus on online sales. This opened up new opportunities for me, but also made me realize I need help if I am going to continue with online sales and start doing art fairs and farmers markets again. As I grow my business and look to hire employees, these classes are teaching me what I need to move forward.” —Maia Hausler

Business Writing with a Creative Flair! (Face to Face)

Intercultural Communication in Healthcare Settings (Livestream)

Want to draw a larger audience with better wording? Websites and internet listings, ads, reviews, mail correspondence - it all can be written with a personal creative touch that enhances its appeal. Many businesses use factthrowing, nuts n’ bolts wording that only imparts the basics of a business. Learn to freewrite pertinent, informative copy that gets read while also being properly edited for grammar, spelling and punctuation. Let’s write creative content and then tidy it up, not restrict the creation with the detail of structure. Well written conceptual text builds relationships and motivates customers to buy products and utilize the services you offer. Remove the boring, and sell with a flair!

As our societies become more interconnected, multicultural healthcare does too. Increasingly, doctors and other healthcare professionals are confronted with communication barriers due to lack of cultural understanding. In order to alleviate this, it is necessary to explore intercultural barriers to effective healthcare, discuss how social determinants of health impact intercultural healthcare, and study how power differences within the healthcare system can influence communication. Learn what is Intercultural Communication, better understand the important role of intercultural communication in healthcare, and develop skills and tools to become proficient communicators in diverse healthcare settings.

Teaching to the Web: Information Literacy for the Internet Age (Livestream - 6 SCECH)

Comparative Religion for K-12 Educators (Livestream - 3 SCECH)

We face a slew of complex global challenges when it comes to navigating and evaluating information online, including sophisticated disinformation campaigns; radicalization of young people; skepticism of science; mistrust of experts; and declining public trust in media, government and each other. Although many of these challenges are new incarnations of long-standing issues, it is becoming increasingly clear that we need new tools to confront them. Our students are exploring and learning about the world largely through digital means, and they need information literacy strategies designed with a networked information landscape (i.e. the internet) in mind. Join a cohort of fellow teachers in exploring and applying practical approaches to evaluating online information, and identifying opportunities to integrate them into your teaching. 3 Wed., Sept. 22 & 29, & Oct. 6 6-7:30 p.m. Instructors: Janet Lively & Nicco Pandolfi $79

The American Academy of Religion has made the following statement: “1) there exists a widespread illiteracy about religion in the U.S.; 2) there are several consequences that stem from this illiteracy, including the ways that it fuels prejudice and antagonism, thereby hindering efforts aimed at promoting respect for diversity, peaceful coexistence, and cooperative endeavors in local, national, and global arenas; 3) it is possible to diminish religious illiteracy by teaching about religion from an academic, non-devotional perspective in primary, middle, and secondary schools”. Join Sarah Montgomery-Richards, an educator in Comparative Religion with an M.A. in Interfaith Action, as we explore the topic of Comparative Religion in a K-12 setting. Learners will engage in a consideration of the tools and resources that have been developed for educators, and will leave with materials that are accessible and applicable to the classroom. Rigid Heddle Weaving (Face to Face)

Beginning Tapestry (Face to Face)

Are you curious about handweaving? Rigid Heddle looms are easy to use, portable and less expensive than a multi-harness loom. With some experience and an experimental attitude, these looms can also do some very complicated weaving tricks. In this three-week extended class, you will become familiar with weaving vocabulary, finishing techniques, and make a plain weave scarf. Additionally, you will learn how to design a second project and warp your loom for a second time. Open to beginners and experienced rigid heddle weavers. Returning students will have the opportunity to work on their own projects and ideas. A supply list will be mailed before class. You will need your own rigid heddle loom. A limited number of looms are available to rent to registered students for $15 from the instructor; contact her prior to class to reserve one nmcray@mac.com.

Tapestry is among the oldest forms of fine arts. Originally for cathedrals and castles, they were used to insulate big stone halls, illustrating battles, parables and metaphors. While the techniques have not changed for centuries, the imagery has. Today’s smaller, portable, personal size looms make it easier for more people to enjoy this art form. Learn how to warp a tapestry loom and explore different ways to create shapes using slits, interlocks and other types of joins. Then learn finishing and mounting techniques. Students who have woven tapestry before may explore advanced techniques. Bring a tapestry loom with a ten-inch wide weaving width (minimum), a notebook/sketch pad, drawing utensils, scissors, and a kitchen fork (used to pack in wefts). The instructor will supply warp and weft materials. Contact the instructor to rent or purchase a tapestry loom (nmcray@mac.com).

Arms Control and the Military-Industrial Complex (Face to Face) For half a century, arms control agreements have helped manage the arms race, been a platform for superpower communications, and a barometer of global stability. But recently the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, the Open Skies Treaty, and the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty have been virtually abandoned. Explore how arms manufacturers in the U.S., Russia and China are creating new weapons that are designed to violate the remaining agreements. Strategic parity that has prevented nuclear war since the 1950s is being replaced by destabilizing attempts to achieve “strategic dominance.” Instructor Jack Segal helped negotiate the START Treaty and the Nuclear Risk Reduction Agreement and, in Moscow, he supervised implementation of those and other agreements from 19931995. At the White House he served as NSC Director for Non-Proliferation from 1998-2000.
