New Hall School Careers Programme 2023/2024; Sixth Form Intent: The Careers Programme for students in Years 12 and 13 intends to provide information and experiences that will enable students to make informed decisions about their post-18 options and develop the skills required for the world of work. Implementation: Students will complete dedicated Careers lessons through the PSHEE programme and these will be supported by careers learning delivered in lessons linking careers to the curriculum, visiting speakers and co-curricular activities, including Careers Day, Work Experience and employer/university visits. Impact: Students will be aware of the full range of post-18 options, including Higher and Degree Apprenticeships, so they are able to make informed decisions that are both aspirational and realistic. Students will have an understanding of the changing nature of the labour market and develop the skills necessary to manage their own career. Year 12 Delivery PSHEE lessons x 3 (25-30 minutes per session) Second half of Trinity Term

Content 1 – Guidance Preparation Students reflect on their own career aspirations and prepare for a one-to-one guidance meeting.

2 – Post-18 Pathways Students explore the full range of post-18 pathways and evaluate and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

3 – Goal Setting Students explore what is important to them and set their own career goals and develop an action plan.

4 – Networking Students research the importance of networking and building professional relationships and how this can support their career management.

Careers Day

5 – Wellbeing; Balancing Life and Work Students research employment rights and discuss the importance of work-life balance and the advantages and disadvantages of higher education at different life stages.

6 – What makes a ‘good’ employer? Students will explore what a ‘good’ employer means to them, how to conduct research into employers and their values and ethics, and how this aligns to their own. Students take part in a Careers Day which includes Personal Branding and Networking Skills. All students have a one-to-one interview with a volunteer from the local business community, New Hall Alumni Association or from the parent community.

University Visit

Students take part in a university taster day to include a campus tour, subject lesson and higher/degree apprenticeship talk.

Work Experience

Students undertake at least three days of voluntary work experience designed to help them explore career opportunities, expand their network and gain an understanding of workplace culture.

UCAS Discovery Exhibition Careers Fair

Students are invited to attend the annual UCAS Discovery Exhibition where they can speak to a wide range of universities in one place to aid their research.

Employer Talks

Programme of lunchtime employer talks available for students to sign up to. All students must attend at least one talk per year and record their attendance on Unifrog.

Students attend the annual Careers Convention to meet with a wide range of employers from different industries, as well as universities and local apprenticeship providers.

All subjects deliver career-related activities to highlight how their subject links to future pathways and skills development. Careers information related to subjects is available on Firefly. Careers related assembly delivered to all year groups during National Careers Week. Apprenticeship awareness activities available to all students during National Apprenticeship Week.

Cocurricular Activities

Apprenticeship talks delivered during National Apprenticeship Week. All students are encouraged to take part in a rich and varied programme of co-curricular activities and record them on Unifrog. See the co-curricular programme.

Year 13 Delivery PSHEE Lessons x 3 (25-30 minutes per session) 1st half of Michaelmas Term

Content 1 – Personal Branding Students reflect on the Year 12 Careers Day and review their own personal brand through their CV and social media presence and explore how their own online presence can hinder or help their career.

2 – Preparing for Interviews Students research the different recruitment and selection methods used by employers and practice their own interview technique.

3 – Assessment Days Students take part in a Mock Assessment Centre and then reflect on their own performance to identify areas for development.

4 – Managing Transition Students explore and discuss the challenges they may face with their post-18 transition to university or into the workplace and begin to identify strategies to manage the transition.

5 – Employment Relationships Students research the different employment relationships, particularly self-employment and entrepreneurship, and highlight the advantages and disadvantages.

6 – Hybrid and Flexible Working Students explore how working arrangements have changed and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of hybrid and flexible working.
