Operating Hours A Message from the Mayor Welcome to the Mission Fall /Winter Leisure Activity Guide. 2017 has been a busy year with celebrations marking the District’s 125th anniversary and, of course, Canada’s 150th. Watch for more events and activities as this busy year draws to a close. During 2017, the District of Mission has also embarked on the development of a new Parks, Recreation Arts and Culture Master Plan. This plan will provide staff and Council with direction on what programs and facilities we will need over the next 10 -15 years so that we can provide this growing community with

all of the resources it will require. If you haven’t already completed a survey on line, we would encourage you to go to www.mission.ca/your-voice and help us make sure the plan reflects your needs and opinions.

Saturday

7:00am - 9:00pm

Sunday

10:00am - 9:00pm

Please visit our website for the most up-todate schedules, events & holiday hours.

Thank you to all who have participated thus far. If you haven’t done so yet, please take the time to go on line or, if you prefer, complete a paper copy of the survey at the Leisure Centre. Watch for an upcoming open house and presentations where you can see what the community had to say and continue to help build the plan.

Schedule Changes

We hope you enjoy seeing what that the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department has to offer over the upcoming fall/ winter season.

Dec 25 - Christmas

Parks, Recreation & Culture Master Plan The District of Mission will be embarking on an update of its 2009 Parks, Trails and Bicycle Master Plan in 2017. In addition to parks and trails the plan will also examine recreation, arts and cultural amenities and programs in order to identify short and long term goals and improvements that can be made over the next 5 to 10 years to make Mission a more livable community. Please watch for future updates and opportunities to become involved in order to ensure that your voice is heard. Be sure to complete the online survey at mission.ca and mark Monday, November 20 on your calendar to participate in the Master Plan Open House held at the Mission Leisure Centre.

What can you achieve Sep 24 - Oct 21?

Bella noticed that the more she exercised and controlled her diet, the less insulin she required and the better she felt. Now Bella uses fitness and a strict diet as a means to control her blood sugar and minimize insulin requirements. She admits this approach isn’t for everyone with her disease and she works in close consultation with her doctor to manage this approach.

Gain the knowledge & skills necessary to confidently use the weight room. Teens will be introduced to the principles of exercise. Unrestricted Fitness Room usage upon completion.

Social Development in Mission In 2006, District Council prioritized the creation of a Social Development Plan. This decision was in part, a response to social concerns in Mission. Community wide forums were held to identify priorities, resulting in the first Social Development Plan (2008) and related action groups. Social Development in Mission encompasses a Social Development Manager, a volunteer based Community Wellness Committee, volunteer action groups and related projects and events.

Social Development core action groups in 2017

A community does not develop itself, it takes dedicated and hardworking people to get involved, use their gifts of the hands, heart and head and build the community they want for themselves and others. Citizen engagement is crucial for the continuation of the quality of life we enjoy in Mission. There is no one who is not needed, everyone has something to contribute no matter how difficult it may be to see. We all want the same things, safe and healthy spaces, community and connection. So how do we do this?

• Stone Soup Community suppers/homelessness/public engagement.

Stone Soup - Join the Movement

• Outreach Network Street level issues as they arise.

Leisure Access

In 2014, a community movement was born called "Stone Soup" in response to homelessness and housing concerns in the Fraser Valley. Stone soup coordinates quarterly stone soup dinners as dinners are a gathering place for everyone in community, not just people that may be food insecure. Community connection points contribute to building the social fabric and social capital of a community for all people. If everyone contributes just a little, we can create community that serves us all www.facebook.com/Missionstonesoup/

To get involved contact Kirsten Hargreaves at khargreaves@mission.ca

• Community Wellness Committee Social determinants of health. • Sustainable Housing Committee Affordable housing.

• MAST, Mission Active Support Team Situations of acutely elevated risk. • Early Childhood Committee Child and family development/resources for 0-6yrs. • Child and Youth Committee Middle years development.

We Love Volunteers! Historically, volunteerism in Canada has been a strongly held value. Many community programs and services are maintained only through the tireless efforts of volunteers. The aging of the volunteer sector along with a slow decline in volunteerism across Canada is a concerning trend for all communities. An actively engaged volunteer core is critical for the human service component of community. Check out the new volunteer site www.volunteermission.ca to be part of Mission's volunteer movement.

Mission Adopt-A-Block Society Adopt a Block, Trail, Park, or Creek with the Mission Adopt-A-Block Society and help keep Mission litter free. We provide all volunteers with pickers, bags, safety vests, and signage along the route to acknowledge the adoption.

Off Leash Dog Park

Municipal Forest Trails

• Dogs are welcome on a leash in all Mission parks and are permitted off-leash in the designated off-leash dog park located at the north end of Centennial Park. Dog owners are asked to adhere to the following guidelines when using the off-leash park.

The District of Mission is one of the few municipalities that manages its own forest resources.

• Dogs must be under firm voice & visual control.

Our forestry trails are signed at the trail head and marked throughout the route with orange reflective markers.

• Dog owners must be in attendance. • Dog owners must have a leash visible. • Dogs must display a current dog license. • Dogs must be vaccinated. • Dog owners are required by law to pick up their dog's feces and to properly dispose of them in the garbage can. • Female dogs in heat are not permitted. • Dogs must be on leash before & after.

The Forestry Department maintains 13 recreation trails within the Municipal Forest for hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking.

• Please avoid any unmarked trails as you could quickly become lost. • Please respect other users on the trails at all times. • Please pack your garbage out and leash and pick up after your dog. • Please Refrain from shortcutting on trails, it causes erosion and destroys the vegetation.
