This instructor is absolutely fabulous. She has a very effective approach. It is clear that she deeply cares about each student’s individual learning because she encourages us numerous times to ask questions. She takes time with those who are struggling with a concept so that every person in the class understands before moving on. She fostered a united team environment where we bonded with our fellow classmates. By the end of 8 weeks, our classmates felt like friends. I felt that everyone in class was 100% engaged at every moment, which is a unique thing for a professor to achieve. I loved that the class was total immersion—no speaking was allowed, so learning the signs became an imperative! In addition, her sense of humor is excellent and we truly had fun learning the material. Because of these things, the class was complete silence, except for laughter that occurred frequently—it was such a neat environment to experience. She is one of the best instructors I have ever had in any course.

Writing Philosophy

Is this a writing class or a philosophy class? Yes to both! Good writing isn’t all plot and character: much of it is arguing a point of view, and that means being clear, precise, and in the end, persuasive. Philosophers ask weird questions like, Should we edit human DNA?, What is knowledge?, and Can machines think? From these questions, we form and hone our arguments. We will be doing philosophy in class, but only as it relates to giving your writing skills a sharper cutting edge. See www.learnatnorth.org for textbook information. No class on 11/28/19 due to Thanksgiving. 7136 11/7/2019 - 12/12/2019 6:30 - 8:30PM 5 ses Th Farr On Campus: CC Bldg Room 3345 $119

ENRICHMENT Andres Maturen Andres is a researcher, speaker and marketing professional who in the last two years made a deep dive into the science of positive psychology. His objective is to explore ways to reach one’s optimal human performance by embracing the science of happiness. Andres holds an MBA from EAE Business School (Spain) and earned a Specialization in Foundations of Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.

Philosophy and Everyday Life In our culture, solutions to life’s challenges range from coffee with a friend to seeing a therapist. Three thousand years before clinical therapy ever existed, people turned to philosophy. It was a call to think clearly about the relationship between our beliefs and our emotions. Or as Socrates asked: “How should we live our lives?” In this fun, discussion-based class, we won’t devote time to studying the works of dead philosophers. Instead, we’ll strive to take on the philosopher’s role ourselves by making a coherent map of what we know (and don’t know). We’ll explore our values while discovering tools to better handle difficulties and solve problems in our own daily lives. Bring your brain and a pen! Schlock Cinema: Calamitous Intent

This fall Schlock Cinema sweeps all common sense from the table to deliver some terrific tales of wonder and woe. First up: Murder! (1930) an early Alfred Hitchcock thriller about a juror who starts his own murder investigation when a female defendant is given a death sentence. Next, we’ll get wound up in a Mummy doublefeature: The Mummy’s Hand (1940) and The Mummy’s Tomb (1942) with Lon Chaney, Jr. Former teen star, Tori Spelling (Beverly Hills, 90210), stars in Mother, May I Sleep with Danger? (1996) as a rich, spoiled college kid who falls for a charming but obsessive boyfriend who becomes dangerously clingy after she dumps him. Before Jock Mahoney replaced Johnny Weismuller as Tarzan, King of the Jungle he shrugged on a monkey suit for Three Blondes in His Life (1961) to portray a suave insurance agent tasked with investigating the disappearance of a colleague. We take our bow for the quarter with Black Dragons (1942). Bela Lugosi squares off with The Lone Ranger himself, Clayton Moore for a bizarre World War II melodrama in which Lugosi portrays a fiendish plastic surgeon who transforms foreign spies into American businessmen. Now that’s what you call Imposter Syndrome, folks! 7135 10/17/2019 - 11/21/2019 7:00 - 9:00PM 5 ses Th Hopkins On Campus: LB Bldg Room 1131 $79

The Films of Buster Keaton

Silent film legend Buster Keaton’s work was nearly forgotten after the “talkies” took over movie houses. When Keaton’s films were rediscovered in the late 1950s, film connoisseurs found he was Chaplin’s only serious rival among the masters of silent comedy. During his career, Keaton made 12 feature films and 19 two-reel comedies between 1920 and 1929. He was a natural comedian who never repeated or imitated himself. If he played a gag more than once, it was in order to improve on the original. He believed that humor was a very serious business and demonstrated a gift for getting a laugh without being too ridiculous. Films screened this quarter include some of Keaton’s early shorts and features including Our Hospitality, Sherlock, Jr. and The General. I enjoyed the variety of methods and approaches used by the instructor to teach both fundamentals from the text like proper use of verb tenses, pronouns, etc. and also practice with writing, speaking, and understanding conversation. These included a good text book, the Destinos series program, composing and discussing personal stories and conducting interviews with other students. – Brian E. on Spanish for Fun and Travel – Level 3 with Juan Miranda
