Welcome to Continuing Education!

Falling Back Since 1970 Summertime in Seattle often means heading outdoors to enjoy the longer, sunny days. With fall coming, it’s a good time to consider indoor pursuits. Though we may be inclined to withdraw to more comfortable confines as the days grow shorter and darker, our curiosity and creativity are far from flagging. Are you looking to learn something new or improve a skill in the community of supportive, like-minded people?

Fall back into a routine with Continuing Education and rest assured you’ll have our unqualified seasonal support.

It was a very relaxed and engaging environment. People could work at their own pace and everyone tried to help each other. The teacher did a great job of showing you what to do, but not doing it for you. She was very patient and explained things well. We learned a lot and feel she covered many of the skills needed to do a future upholstery project.

ARTS Drawing with Confidence SARAH NORSWORTHY Sarah is an artist born in Anchorage, Alaska.

She earned her B.A. in Studio Art at Dartmouth College in 2002 with a minor in English, and her MFA at University of Washington in Painting and Drawing in 2015. As an artist she has worked in response to her experiences exploring the landscapes of Washington, Arkansas and Vermont through painting, drawing, fiber arts, and sculptural environment. She was a staff artist at the Vermont Studio Center in 2007-2008, and worked for three years teaching art to developmentally disabled adults in Fayetteville, Arkansas prior to her return to Seattle for graduate school. She currently lives in Seattle where she is working as a seamstress/tailor for a small clothier.

VISUAL ARTS Introduction to Drawing In this introductory drawing class you will learn basic techniques of drawing from life, still life, places in our immediate environment and each other. This class will focus on the building blocks of drawing such as composition, measurement, line, shape, value, gesture and mark. You will become familiar with a variety of materials and approaches to drawing by studying artwork both historical and contemporary. Although instruction will be rooted in drawing from observation, we will explore the potential to abstract from what we see and experiment with working from memory.

Gain confidence as you learn about tools, how to work with electrical outlets, switches and lighting; plumbing, faucets and wall repair. FITNESS Belly Dance Blast CELIA BOARMAN Celia has had a love of dancing from an early age.

She remembers watching the old black and white Fred and Ginger movies and trying to emulate their every move. She has studied ballet, jazz and modern dance but ballroom dancing was the style that captivated her. Celia studied theatre at Cornish college on scholarship, graduating from the U.W. with a BA in theatre and a minor in communications. She has professionally entertained audiences both on the theatrical stage as well as the ballroom floor. Always passionate about performing, Celia discovered she also had a gift for teaching --“ I learn so much from my students.” Currently she teaches dancers of a variety of ages, from 10 to 85 years old; the novice to the experienced. She holds out hope that her young son will be her next partner!

This fall we will explore the themes of deception and related skullduggery. First off we’ll burrow into Universal’s classic, The Mole People, (1959) starring John Agar and Hugh Beaumont as luckless archeologists who stumble upon a colony of giant, spade-foot creatures only to discover their human masters are the true monsters. Then it’s William Castle cult-favorite, Homicidal (1961), which starts with a woman stabbing a justice of the peace and ends in one twisted identity crisis. This film promised so terrifying a conclusion, it featured a 45-second “fright break” and a coward’s right to refund. After that we jump back in time with The Yesterday Machine (1963) where Tim Holt (The Treasure of Sierra Madre) is sent to Nazi Germany by a former Third Reich scientist to change the outcome of WWII. We then explore former radio drama Inner Sanctum’s movie franchise with Pillow of Death (1946) starring Lon Chaney, Jr. and Brenda Joyce about a philandering attorney accused of murdering his wife and taunted by her voice from beyond the grave. We close with Terror in the Jungle (1968), surely one of filmdom’s most glorious messes. This foundling-child-turned-White God-by-discombobulated-jungletribe tale was filmed in Griffith Park, Hollywood and Peru by two different directors, both of whom quit. A third director completed the project by inserting random scenes from a forgotten 1940’s jungle film.

PARKINg INFORMATION For your convenience, parking for on-campus Continuing Education classes is included in the cost of tuition (with some exceptions). A parking permit will be emailed to you for use during your class time.

A Continuing Education parking permit is required to park on campus anytime Monday through Friday. Please print and place on your dashboard. Parking permits are for use in any parking lot except for visitor lots. You may park in the Garage and the Southwest Lot in the evenings after 5pm. Parking is free on weekends, and no parking permit is needed at offcampus sites (with some exceptions).
