Being an IAPCO member is more than just a yearly renewal, it is a quality stamp that is respected around the globe. But it goes deeper than that – as an association that is rooted in the “People’s business”, we act and grow by our Core Values: IAPCO members are EXTRAORDINARY, we UPHOLD THE TRUST of our clients, partners and team members and we are PROUD OF OUR PROFESSION. We don’t just keep up, we SET THE BENCHMARK and all of this BECAUSE LEARNING MATTERS. Last year we celebrated our 50th anniversary and at the beginning of the 51st year of our existence, we came together in Basel to take a long, hard look at ourselves and set our association up for the future. We invited clients, innovators and experts from various fields to give us a glimpse into their research and help us better understand what we have to do to keep providing excellent service to our clients and shape the industry for years to come. Learning, debating and sharing will always be the major drivers for change in our society and PCOs play an important part as facilitators of those drivers. While we might be competing for some of the same business, we understand that the greater purpose is to better ourselves everyday so we are able to facilitate the success of the people we work with.

Membership to IAPCO is unlike most other not-for-profit international associations. Before a PCO can become a member and be accredited with the IAPCO Accreditation, they must demonstrate that they consistently deliver the highest level of professional service to their clients and partners. Retaining the IAPCO membership requires annual quality assessments, references and on-going education. Due to the strength of the IAPCO quality mark, PCO clients, Convention Bureaux and other meetings industry stakeholders are increasingly requesting to work and partner only with IAPCO Accredited PCOs. This provides obvious advantages for our members when competing for business. Our Education Faculty delivers education and training programmes and seminars in person, in cities around the globe, as well as through our online IAPCO WebEDGE system. We recognise the best of the best in our industry through our annual Awards Programme. We also publish our informative PCO Magazine four times a year and have just launched our IAPCO Connectors Programme which brings together junior to mid-level PCO staff through an online knowledge-share platform. We have several new, unique and very exciting initiatives to look forward to over the next 18 months that will continue to add value to our members’ businesses, our partners connectivity and to the quality of our industry as a whole. I, along with the rest of the team here at IAPCO headquarters, remain focussed on helping our members and partners to deliver the highest level of service to clients and contribute lasting economic and social benefit to the cities that we all live and work in. It is fair to say that IAPCO is a very active and member-focussed international association and there’s no better time to get involved and become part of the IAPCO Accredited family.

ABOUT IAPCO INTRODUCTION The acronym IAPCO stands for the International Association of Professional Congress Organisers. We are a member based organisation comprising conference organising/meeting planning companies whose aims are to raise standards in our industry and to provide a quality assurance to our clients.

IAPCO’s clearly articulated vision to “drive excellence” takes many forms, including creating opportunities for members to share best practice with one another, promoting best practice, participating in industry-wide discussions, encouraging members to adhere to the Association’s quality standards and developing education programmes which are highly relevant, not just for PCOs but also for the wider meetings industry.
MEMBERSHIP An IAPCO membership signifies to potential clients that you have achieved a recognised quality benchmark and that you continually strive to maintain and deliver that standard. In order to qualify for membership, an applicant must provide proof that they have organised ten International or National Events. Client references are obtained, before a site inspection of a designated international congress is undertaken. Interviews take place with international clients, the local organising committee, delegates and exhibitors participating in the selected event. This is followed by a visit to the applicant’s offices for an audit of procedures and business practices together with staff interviews. Thereafter, members commit to the Code of Conduct and pledge to maintain the standards demonstrated during the application process. There are annual check-lists to ensure continuous professional activity and and a rigorous quality check procedure.
EDUCATION EDGE (Experts in Dynamic Global Education) is IAPCO’s education programme, designed to provide continuing education and to raise standards. IAPCO offers four educational products: EDGE seminars, web-EDGE, Bespoke EDGE and Sharp EDGE, each providing a different educational offering to the meetings industry.
Successful contemporary science conferences require connections, strong networks of expertise and plugging in to cutting edge ideas. The local organising committee of IMC19 was determined to present the global microscopy community with an innovative, exciting and memorable event. To achieve that aspiration, we wanted to work with a PCO who shared that vision and, equally, were able to lead and collaborate within an international context. HOW TO BECOME AN IAPCO ACCREDITED MEMBER STEP 1 Online application Complete the online application in full (sample form included - page 4)
STEP 2 Offline application You will need to submit 10 international or national events organised where the maximum number of services were provided (see services list on pages 7) • International events require a minimum of 400 delegates, with 40% or more coming from at least 5 countries OR • National events attended by more than 1000 participants
STEP 3 References Client contact details for references must be provided for at least 5 events. IAPCO will contact your 5 references to support your application. References from IAPCO members will also be sought.
STEP 4 Future events for site visit
5 future international events with 400 or more participants should be submitted for site visit consideration.
STEP 5 Site visit
Host a site visit to an event and to your offices. Outcome of the site visit will be presented to the council for final decision
