HR HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS: BIRD ART IN HIGHLANDS RANCH Bird art, like animal art featured in last month's historic highlight, also dots the Highlands Ranch landscape. The bird “flying” on signs is immediately recognizable to drivers entering Highlands Ranch. In 1981, builder Mission Viejo asked Brock and Associates marketing firm to develop a logo for the New Town of Highlands Ranch. According to Kathi Brock, instead of cattle–which didn’t seem dynamic enough–her firm created the “epic bird,” a combination of an eagle, falcon and owl. “The Tribute Eagle” at the heart of the Veterans Monument, next to the Highlands Ranch Library, was created by Mike Curtis and dedicated in July 2009. Sculpting the bald eagle since 1971, Curtis is considered the foremost sculptor of the bald eagle, our nation’s proud symbol. He has created sculptures for veteran’s memorials in 16 states.

Westridge:

Also next to the library at Civic Green Park is a sculpture by Colorado artist Rik Sargent, known for his art in public places. Given free creative rein, he chose two things recognizable in Highlands Ranch–the falcon and the Indian Paintbrush, the latter a symbol of the HR

Project Updates: The HRCA was busy this past summer updating the facilities and enhancing the amenities within our recreational areas. With each facility closure, staff was able to deep clean the pools and facilities, perform parking lot maintenance, conduct staff trainings, and complete other maintenance work that is not otherwise possible when members are in the building. The highlight of the closure projects this year was the addition of the new Westridge whale slide. We hope that amenity is enjoyed by families for many more summers to come.

COMMUNITY NEWS Legislative Changes to Landscape and Signage Rules Earlier this year, the Colorado Legislation passed two bills that impact the use of flags and yard signs for Homeowners Associations. Those bills were then signed by the Governor, with an effective date of September 7, 2021. The Board of Directors has worked diligently with HRCA legal counsel to develop parameters for signage and flags based on the new legislation. Please visit www.HRCAonline.org/HB21-1310 for more information. It is important to understand that state legislation overrides the rules that HRCA previously had in place. You can learn more about House Bill 21-1229 and House Bill 21-1310 on the HRCA web site. If you are concerned about the impacts of HB21-1310, we encourage you to let your legislators know- Senator Chris Holbert of Senate District 30, Representative Kevin Van Winkle of House District 43 and Mark Baisley, District 39 all represent Highlands Ranch.

Instead of naming his sculpture, he said it’s “Dedicated to the people of Highlands Ranch.” At the University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch is the “Eagle Against the Sun,” a bronze eagle described as “flying with wings stretched out within the sun’s brilliance.” Opened in July 1998, the club was privately owned – now semi-private – under the name Fairways and Greens, Inc. “Sandy Loeffler, one of the owners, liked what the eagle stood for and that it fit in with the area,” said Andy Benson, Director of golf. Chris Navarro, whose work Loeffler admired, was commissioned to do the sculpture. Shortly after the club opened, the owners endowed it to the University of Denver’s golf program. The club’s name change from Highlands Ranch Golf Club occurred in the past 18 months. These prominent bird sculptures add a special “sense of place” in Highlands Ranch. FALL MAINTENANCE AND IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS The kids are back in school. The days are getting shorter. Cooler weather will soon be here. It is about time for those fall maintenance projects to get underway! Take a look at your property- what needs to be done? Get ready to rake up those leaves. Trim any trees and shrubs that need to be pruned back in the fall. What about aerating and/or fertilizing the lawn? Anything that you can do now to set your landscape up for success in the spring is great. Wrap up any projects that you have been working on, as the weather can change quickly. It was just last year that we had a 101 degree day in September followed by measurable snow later in the week! Now is also the time to start thinking about what improvement projects you may want to undertake in 2022. The number of submittals processed by the Community Improvement Services office slows down a bit during the fall and winter months. It is the perfect time to submit, so you have approval for your project and can start as soon as the weather permits. The Architectural approval is good for one year, so you have time to get the work done. So if you are thinking about painting your home in 2022, or putting in a new patio, submit those plans now. Be sure to look over the Residential Improvement Guidelines for any requirements related to your proposed project. Don’t forget almost all exterior improvements needs Architectural approval! If you have any questions, contact the CIS office at 303-471-8821.
