Holy Glitter Zine Easter Special March 2016

Created and edited by Fleur Stiels www.holyglitterzine.blogspot.com All original artwork and text belong to Fleur and Viola Stiels (my lovely sister!) A big thank you to my boyfriend for taking pictures with/of me and to my sister for sharing delicious Easter recipes

Welcome happy inhabitants of planet earth This is the second special already, hurray! This time it’s all about Easter, the most happy and shiny holiday of all (for some that is, haha!). It’s the start of spring, when lambs are born and flowers are starting to bloom again. In the Netherlands, where I live, it’s a big, BIG deal. Stores will start selling Easter decorations and candy even weeks/months before the actual Easter weekend. Everyone will go home to be with their family again, have nice Easter breakfasts and play games. I think you could compare Dutch Easter to American Thanksgiving haha :) Anyway, I love Easter! I love bunnies, I love little chicks, I love Easter eggs, I love the decorations, I love the wonderful food my sister and grandma cook each year and I love being with my family. And ofcourse, I’m fascinated by the actual reason we celebrate Easter: the death and resurrection of Jesus. I’m not a believer myself, but faith (and Christianity in particular) has always interested me. That’s why I tried to create an ode to Mary and Jesus in this special as well. With respect, so please don’t misinterpret my intentions ;) Have a very Happy Easter, everyone!

A few weeks before the Easter weekend, all stores are getting crazy with Easter products and bunny decorations. Yes, this is the Easter Mania!

SPENDING EASTER ALONE: WHAT TO DO? Yes, Easter is about being with your family and having fun. But hey, maybe you don’t have the opportunity to go to your family or maybe you just don’t feel like it. Don’t feel ashamed, there’s nothing wrong with being alone. Many times, it might even be very pleasant and comforting. So, when you’re about to spend Easter by yourself, here’s what you could do. (A big thanks to my sister Viola and my mum for helping me with this list!) -PAINT YOUR OWN EASTER EGGSIt’s so much fun to paint your own Easter eggs! You could buy little kits at the store with actual paint and those funny egg holders or you could get those tablets which you can put in boiling water to paint your eggs with. If you feel like experimenting, try painting eggs with natural colors. For example, you could put

beets in your boiling water to make your eggs look red or spinach to make them look green. -TREAT YOUR PET BUNNYThat is, if you have one. Why only treat yourself during the Easter weekend, when you could also take some extra care of your fluffy little friend? Clean out his cage or give him some rabbit-friendly candy! -EAT CHOCOLATE LOLLIPOPSI don’t know if these are very well-known, but in the Netherlands you have those cute bunny-shaped lollipops made out of chocolate. My sister absolutely loves them and told me she would eat as many as she could if she would be alone for Easter. Luckily, she’s with us, so she won’t get into a chocolate food coma haha. Anyway, it’s always nice to have chocolate lollipops!

-READ THE STORY OF THE RESURRECTIONThis might not be for everyone, but it might be nice to know more about the origin of Easter. Some kids these days don’t even know why we celebrate Christmas (it’s all about Santa, right?), let alone they know what Easter is about. So educate yourself and read about what happened so many years ago. You might find it interesting or it might even give you inspiration. - GO TO A MUSEUMOn Easter Sunday, there’s a high chance many things are closed. But nowadays on Easter Monday, many shops and museums are opening their doors. Go visit a museum you like or go to an Easter related exhibition. Please avoid places like home interior malls or boulevards, since places like these are crowded on Easter Monday. For some reason, many people like to shop for couches and curtains on Easter Monday?

-VISIT NEW-BORN LAMBSOr chicks, or bunnies, or ponies... Just go to a nearby farm or even a meadow and spend your time cuddling or photographing those little babies. Welcome them to this wonderful world! -BAKE EASTER CUPCAKESBaking cupcakes is always fun, but it’s even nicer when you can work around a theme. Make sure you have all the ingredients at home and start baking. You can decorate your cupcakes with frosting and edible bunny images or you can use cookie cutters to make some creative, high piled cupcakes. -CRAFT YOUR HEART OUT!Long weekends like these are the perfect opportunity to start a DIY or to finally finish that craft project you started months ago. You could even create some Easter themed crafts, like pins or flowercrowns. Oh my, how wonderful would a flowercrown with little chicks on it be?! Whatever you’re going to do, enjoy your Easter weekend!

bread bunnies by Viola Stiels

For 6 bunnies you will need: - 1 pack of white bread mix - 1 egg - water - chocolate chips (optional) - dough roller - cup - brush

1. Prepare the white bread mix according to the instructions on the package. 2. Divide the dough into 6 parts and use the dough roller to make each part around 35 cm long. 3. Cut off 1 cm of each part (for the bunny tail) and 6 cm of each part (for the bunny head). Put those aside for later. 4. Roll up the big parts to create the body of the bunnies. 5. Make little balls of the 1 cm parts for the bunny tail and put those against the body. 6. Make small cuts in the 6 cm parts to create the ears and put those against the top of the bunny body (your bunny should look like the one on the right). 7. Let the bunnies’ dough rise for about 15 minutes. 8. Preheat the oven on 200°C. 9. Put an egg yolk and two tablespoons of water and whisk it. 10. Use the brush to spread the egg mixture over the bunnies. (optional: create an eye for the bunny by placing a chocolate chip in the dough) 11. Bake the bunnies in the oven for about 15 minutes. 12. Let them cool off and then: enjoy!

HOW TO

make spring babies crafts Easter is the start of spring, which means the start of animal births. All spring, baby animals are born. I’d like to call them spring babies! Well, how to make crafts that are spring babies themed? -Firstly, you’ll need to gather all kinds of paper. All colors, all patterns, all glittery versions. -Secondly, find pictures of animal babies that you like. -Thirdly, gather as many small objects as possible. Beads, buttons, roses, stickers, glitters, feathers, stars etc. -Fourthly, try out several combinations of paper, small objects and baby pictures. -Finally, glue it all together and ta-dah! Beautiful spring babies!
