reetings! Folks, it is finally fall. The nights are cooler and crisper, and the days less sweltering. Our favorite fall poem is Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken.

HOUSTON EDITION PUBLISHER Cindy & Mike Hart EDITORS Mike Hart DESIGN & PRODUCTION Paul Scott Helene Leininger Marsha Baker Stephanie Herriman Tammy Leal CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Doyle Ward Sarah Gish Michael Gott Linda Sechrist SALES & MARKETING BARBARA SILBERG WEBSITE Mike Hart

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

Cindy and I take time every year in late October to reflect on the decisions we have made that have brought us to this place where we are now. We have often chosen that road less traveled and I believe it has made all the difference. It isn’t so much those times when you choose good as opposed to evil or make a wise choice as opposed to an unwise one. It is the times when the choices look about the same and you have to choose. I know there are those who interpret the poem as the speaker just telling his friends that his choice made all the difference when the choices were no different at all. I choose not to believe that. Choosing the road less traveled has made ALL the difference for us.

Peace & love,

Mike & Cindy Hart

Mennonite Sale for World Peace

Think Positive

by Doyle Ward ou have more than 55,000 thoughts each day. Many are the same thoughts over and over again. Every single one is an affirmation; this also includes everything that you say. By reducing your negative thoughts and words and increasing the positive ones, you can reshape your life. Expecting a better day helps to create a better life. The only place we have to take action or make changes is the present. There are basically two kinds of thoughts. Those that work for you and those that work against you. Positive affirmations are statements that help keep your thoughts on track so you can create the life that you want and deserve.

Y

My thoughts are focused in ways that empower me. The only thing that you are guaranteed in life is this moment. Working with positive affirmations can radically change your mindset. Say them and write them repeatedly with the feeling that they are your truth. You have the power to make great changes in yourself and the world. I know this is true because I have made huge changes in my life by changing my thoughts. Doyle Ward is a successful life coach, workshop leader and lecturer in the field of personal development and intuition. Listen to him live on inflowradio.com each Wednesday at 1 p.m. CT. “R

elief Sales” are a Mennonite tradition across Canada and the United States, with annual sales at fair grounds from Pennsylvania to Kansas drawing crowds in the thousands. Staple activities at those multi-day sales usually include a live auction of quilts, woodworking, and sometimes farm implements; there’s almost always a dizzying array of baked goods, often served with homemade ice cream; and craft supply stalls keep local crafters and quilters supplied with patterns, materials, and inspiration into the next year. The traditional name comes from the whole point of these sales - to raise money for Mennonite Central Committee and their peace-making and relief efforts around the world. In Houston, our sale is smaller, and we’ve added an urban spin to the traditional Relief Sale. Known as the “Texas Mennonite Sale and Auction for World Relief ” for its first 28 years, it was renamed the “Mennonite Sale for World Peace” for the 29th event in 2018, because “world peace” seems to be a more widely recognizable idea than “world relief ”, even though they essentially mean the same thing. This year, the Houston Peace Sale will feature: Craft Market, Bakery, Ten Thousand Villages, Turkish pottery & ceramics, A 2nd Cup coffee, food & snacks, live auction of quilts, silent auction, books & games, “My Coins Count” (spare change for world peace projects). Come along and see what you think: Saturday, November 3, 2-7pm. Houston Mennonite Church, 1231 Wirt Rd, Houston, TX 77055. More info at PeaceSale.org or Facebook.com/HoustonPeaceSale.

words from unity

event brief

Authentic Power by Rev. Michael Gott - Senior Minister, Unity of Houston was watching my six-year old daughter Micah playing with her toys a couple of weeks ago. She was taking her little animal and people figures and lining them up according to some exacting system in her mind. I could feel how calming and affirming this activity was for her. What you need to know about this child is that she is a BIG personality. She has strong opinions and desires on how things should be, and when life doesn’t happen according to her plan, well…it’s not pretty. She requires a lot of patience and strong guidance from her parents. I know she feels powerless a lot. This simple activity of lining up her Rev. Michael Gott toys restored her sense of authority and volition in her firstgrader world. Many times, when we observe people on a control or power trip, it’s a grown-up version of the same thing. Most of us have done it from time to time. When we feel out of control or stymied by circumstances, we have a need to exert some power. And as long as we don’t try to control other people, it can be just fine. Organize the closet. Clean out the junk drawer. These are positive ways to reestablish a sense of order and direction. But…what if we’re truly not meant to be in control? What if we are intended to flow with life, rather than decide and direct everything? Someone recently sent me a James Taylor song to listen to. It’s called Up From Your Life. Here’s the lyric that caught me: There’s a river running under your feet, under this house, under this street. Straight from the heart, ancient and sweet, on its way back home. What if we can trust Life? Allow ourselves to relinquish the need to know and control, and just be. And let others be, too. The longer I’m on this spiritual path, the more I know that I don’t have to know everything. We are exquisitely cared for by the Spirit that gave us breath. There is an authentic spiritual power that lifts and guides us through life, and if we are quiet enough, we can feel it. Everything is OK, even when we can’t see it right now.

Yoga for Stress Reduction by Laura Webster

Understanding and reducing stress has become paramount in terms of caring for our bodies and minds. Numerous studies have now shown that stress can be a factor behind many of the major diseases that people face today. It is more crucial than ever that we include habits and practices in our daily lives that promote and improve our health and our spiritual growth. The pressures of life demand our attention and we need to take responsibility for creating wellbeing in our lives.

I

ncreasing research in the health fields have indicated that stress-reducing techniques found in yoga are not only powerful but also significant. Yoga literally means union and if we practice with honest intent, we begin to become sensitive to all of life around us. Yoga can bring us a sense of freedom – freedom from pain, freedom from fear, freedom of aggravation and freedom from a sense of isolation. Yoga can be so much more than physical relief. As we observe each posture with mindful awareness, yoga asanas become a “meditation in action” as B.K.S. Iyengar explains it. The breathing serves not only to improve the function of the immune cells of the body but it is also a tool for keeping us present. Remaining in a present state can free us from unpleasant memories of the past and worrying about the future. Practiced responsibly and with knowledge, yoga can be a healing companion for anyone in any condition. Knowing what the poses and breath techniques can do for us empowers us.

I AM NOT STRONG

Realize your Greatest POTENTIAL

Transformation Prayer Ministry is a powerful way to become closer to God, and get relief from for whatever is bothering you

Understanding how these methods work gives us opportunities to work with our own bodies and minds to make changes. Although many variations have now been created in the field of yoga, a basic understanding of what it can do for us is available to all in a simple and direct way. Yoga master B. K. S. Iyengar has brought yoga to the West in a unique way. Iyengar was recently recognized by Time magazine as being one of the 100 most influential people in the world. His work has touched people all over the world and is widely practice in the United States. Physicians not only from India but around the world have sent people to him with certain conditions because his method has shown them improvement. Not only has he refined yoga practice by being the first to apply the principles of body alignment, but he also introduced the idea of props which help people understand what the pose can feel like in its evolved state. The best way to approach yoga is with an open mind and bare feet! Practitioners soon learn that it is not about competition with anyone but about listening to what your body, mind, and emotions will teach you about you. It will challenge you not only physically but also by being with what is with you at the moment. Consistency is important for anyone who wants to create a change in their lives, and the practice of yoga is no different. As it is practiced more and more, practitioners often find that their bodies want to do more. the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai, founder of the Green Belt Movement, Finkbeiner expanded Maathai’s original concept of a billion plantings to the Trillion Tree Campaign. To date, it’s seen 15 billion new trees in 190 countries under the guidance of the U.N. Environment Programme. Speaking at an Environmental Systems Research Institute Conference, Finkbeiner said that beyond planting trees, children involved in the initiative have delivered presentations in schools and rotary clubs, and engineered sit-down meetings with mayors, local government officials and even presidents of countries. Several have spoken before the UN General Assembly and national parliaments, urging them to address the climate crisis.

A Revolution in Education

Earth Child Institute

Arati Patel was just 24 when she began serving as an intern with Earth Child Institute (ECI), a nonprofit that empowers global youth to engage with sustainability issues. Today, the New Jersey resident serves as its president, and is passionate about why investing in the education of children is significant. As just one example, “Amazonian children are teaching their parents about how deforestation impacts climate change,” says Patel. A degree in environmental law and policy at Vermont Law School, in South Royalton, and expertise in environmental education, curriculum development, field research and community outreach has helped Patel to assist in developing lesson plans for ECI Water Schools. Community groups and schools are mobilized to evaluate the health of rivers and provide basic training in good health habits.

After graduating from Beijing University Affiliated High School, Jason Wang, 18, postponed college for a year and visited the U.S. and Europe looking for the best practices in education. When he returned, he was in no hurry to enter college, but rather to develop the curriculum for Beijing’s Moonshot Academy, which opened in January with 30 students from 14 to 16 years old. Turning traditional methods of education on its ear, Moonshot Academy students are accepted based on their learning ability, independent thinking skills and capacity to turn ideas into action, rather than standardized test scores. Students learn through personalized experiences that enable them to practice and demonstrate core competencies to face the challenges of the future.

“Research shows that by the age of 39, today’s average high school graduate will have had nine different jobs, half of which have not been invented yet. Artificial intelligence has changed the playing field. We can’t keep educating kids in the same way,” says Nancy Riehle, executive director of the Creative Academic Network Scholastic Foundation that supports the academy.

Time’s Up

Inspired by the January 2017 Women’s March, Jamie Margolin, a 16-year-old student at Seattle’s Holy Names Academy, launched Zero Hour, a movement for youth rights and action on climate change. Margolin and her teammates have formed a nationwide coalition that inspires and mobilizes students throughout the U.S. and in London, England. They took to the streets on July 21 to march for environmental justice as social justice. Zero Hour activities supporting the Washington, D.C., march included meeting with nearly 40 federal lawmakers and presenting a manifesto of demands. It calls for governments and companies to take action on all climate change and environmental issues, including divesting

from fossil fuels; increasing investment in renewable energy; legislating strict carbon reduction targets; encouraging plant-based lifestyles; schooling youth on the importance of reducing our carbon footprint; reducing excessive use of single-use plastic; ending rainforest deforestation; halting all animal cruelty; and preventing loss of biodiversity and species extinctions. Margolin and other Zero Hour members agree, including Nadia Nazar, 16, an art director from Baltimore, Maryland; Zanagee Artis, 18, a logistics director from Clinton, Connecticut; and Kibiriti Majuto, 20, of Charlottesville, Virginia, originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They jointly developed the organization’s platform. “It’s our generation that is going to be impacted the most by the effects of accelerated climate change that we are causing. This march is a launch. We’re not done,” says Margolin. At a pivotal time in which many theorize that our nation lacks the ability to coalesce around a great enterprise to solve existing problems, it appears that those doing the calculating have not factored in the millions of motivated young people as critical decision makers. It may be that their imagination, energetic drive, passionate self-confidence and “no borders” cooperation paves the way to a brighter future for all. Not waiting for the torch to be passed, young people are seizing it and acting now, no longer naively thinking that there will always be enough time tomorrow. Be Heard. Make a Difference. by Jadyn Turner

As young adults and teens, we need to start taking action on issues where we want to see something changed. We can’t just look at these issues and say someone else will do it. We were given a voice so now as teens need to use it, especially on issues that affect us more than they affect adults such as school shootings. We have to stop school shootings nationwide because we are the ones sitting in the classrooms not knowing if we are safe. We are the ones that go to school every day to get a good

education. We don’t go to school to worry about whether or not we will come home that day or see our parents again. We are the ones in the classrooms, so we need to be the ones to make the change. There are so many things that you can do on the school safety issue in your community such as starting a Dream Team club for school safety in your own school by going to MakeOurSchoolsSafe.org/ dream-team. This organization was started by my cousin’s mom after my cousin Alyssa was killed in the Parkland shooting. Established organizations can help you work toward school safety just by going to the meetings and sharing your opinions. Another super easy thing that you can do is talk to your friends and spread the word on issues that are important to you. We need to use our voices and be heard. Speak out or get on the computer. There are so many ways that you can be part of the change for whatever you feel needs to be fixed in this world. We have the power to change the world with one click or post. It’s so easy for you to make your opinion heard loud and clear but you have to be willing to share. Once you share what you think, people will start to ask questions and you can help them to understand, as educating people is the first step to change. If you don’t know a lot about something that you are interested in seeing changed, then ask or look it up so you can start being part of the solution. Whether you are interested in the environment, gun control, poverty or school safety, we all have the power to make a difference. So go out and change the world. When we speak in numbers, adults will listen.

It’s 3:23 in the morning and I’m awake because my great-great grandchildren won’t let me sleep my great-great grandchildren ask me in dreams What did you do while the planet was plundered? What did you do when the Earth was unraveling? Surely you did something when the seasons started failing? As the mammals, reptiles and birds were all dying? Did you fill the streets with protest when democracy was stolen? What did you do once you knew?

atural Birth, you may be considering it but with so many amazing resources throughout Houston you might not know where to start. How you choose to birth is very personal and must be respected. What is important is that every new mother and family is celebrated, supported and cared for during their pregnancy, birth and postpartum stages. Whether you are a pregnant woman seeking a medicated vaginal birth, a cesarean section birth or a natural/instinctive birth, you are fortunate to have a plethora of great care providers and birth workers who will help you navigate through your pregnancy and birth with ease and comfort. With so many options available why are pregnant mothers opting for a natural birth? Many women choose to birth naturally to avoid what is known as the cascade of interventions that may occur in a more medicated birth. It is known that medications such as pitocin and anesthesia a woman receives during the birth crosses the placenta and may affect the unborn child, not only that but narcotics come with side effects that are not always clearly made known to the laboring woman in the heat of the moment. Women who do experience a natural or medication-free birth report the following benefits: Easier recovery in their postpartum, better bonding with baby, better breastfeeding journey, less risks of side effects from medications, faster mobility after the birth, better mobility during the birth, less trauma or damage to the body, lower costs with regards to billing and a more alert newborn in the immediate aftermath of birth.

If your aim is to have a natural or instinctive birthing experience you may be inundated with lots of great advice and maybe some not so great advice too. So, where to start? The first thing I will suggest to all my families once they decide on the natural birthing experience they desire is to find a care provider that is supportive and experienced in attending natural births. MIDWIFE For many pregnant women, a midwife is the preferred option when seeking a primary care provider. Midwives are professionally trained and licensed medical professionals who tend to women during their pregnancy, births and postpartum recoveries. “National research shows that midwives achieve the same outcomes as physicians without disrupting the natural birth process as often. Research also shows that midwives have reduced cesarean section rates by more than 50% with no compromise in safety. In fact, care from midwives has significantly lower rates of induced labor, episiotomies, and forceps births. Midwives are most actively involved in a woman’s preparation for childbirth. That kind of support reduces the length of labor, avoids unnecessary interventions and improves birth outcomes. Midwifery care is proven to be safe!” (Source: http://houstonmidwives.org/what-is-a-midwife) Midwives may attend births in hospitals, homes and free-standing birth centers. Besides the excellent level of care and personalized attention every family will receive, the sheer flexibility of where midwives can attend births is one of the reasons they are so

beloved and highly sought after. Midwives can also care for women who are wishing to enjoy the benefits of a water birth. Water births are known to offer a woman more comfort during her labor as the buoyancy encourages or promotes improved blood circulation, less pain, lower blood pressure and in some cases more efficient contractions over all. OBGYN Whether it is for medical or personal reasons, a pregnant woman may choose an OBGYN to care for her during her pregnancy and birth. An OBGYN attends births in hospitals but cannot attend a water birth. They work within the restrictions of the hospital they are contracted through, if a natural birth is the goal, as with any care provider, it is incredibly important to interview your OBGYN and choose one that is fully supportive of your birthing wishes. You may benefit from knowing their cesarean section and induction rates as well as the hospitals CS and induction rates too. You may also want to know how supportive the labor and delivery personnel are in the hospital you will be birthing in. Are they well trained and experienced in natural birth? Do they promote movement in labor, mothers desire to eat in labor or mothers desire to birth in a position comfortable for her and her baby etc. We have great OBGYN’s in Houston, you may have to do some work and find them, but the effort will be worth it. DOULA A doula is a birth attendant or support person who offers the mother physical and emotional support during her pregnancy and birth. A well trained or experienced doula can lend a wealth of knowledge to any birthing experience or environment. They may present many massage and comfort techniques to the birthing woman, they will help the mother in and out of various laboring and birthing positions as well as help the partner to better support the mother. A doula knows that their role is not to replace the partner but to enhance the couples birthing experience and help them together, welcome their baby in joy and comfort. After having the support of a doula during a birth, many families report a better overall experience and come away from their births feeling strong and empowered as they enter into parenthood. Dr. John H Kennell is quoted as having said “If 18

a doula were a drug, it would be unethical NOT to use it”. It is important to note however, a doula is not a medically trained professional and they do not give medical advice or speak to care providers on behalf of the mother.

tor, a professionally trained and certified prenatal massage therapist, a prenatal yoga class, reiki sessions and so on. Joining a pregnancy group in your area will give you a better scope of local resources and activities to take part in that will help you on

CHILDBIRTH CLASSES With your care provider and your doula secured you will now want to consider educating yourself on everything birth related. Houston has an abundance of great quality and evidenced based childbirth education options. Methods such as The Bradley Method, Christian Faith Based , Birth Boot Camp, and HypnoBirthing to mention a few, are widely available throughout the Houston area, as are independently formed and run childbirth classes. Private classes are offered but will vary from method to method and instructor to instructor. Do your research, investigate them all and decide on a method of preparation that will align with your beliefs and birthing goals. Great care providers love a well educated family, there is less work for the care provider to do and you will stand a better chance of achieving the birthing outcome you desire as you will ahead of time know all your options going into the birthing day. Education is key and a well educated family is essential. Along with a great birthing team and education behind you, there are many other components to a wonderful birthing experience. Preparing the body and mind for the upcoming birth is incredibly important not only for the laboring woman but for the unborn child too. Pregnant women would hugely benefit from the services of a Webster-certified chiroprac-

your journey. When you find your village and your core support group, you may find your entire pregnancy and birth will be an altogether more sacred and enjoyable experience.

The Importance of Tummy Time

by Dr. Alayna Pagnani-Gendron aving a new baby, you hear lots of phrases like “tummy time” and “back is best.” While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends placing baby on their back to sleep, but it’s important baby is getting enough quality time on their belly daily.

H

When should you start tummy time? From day one tummy time is started the minute baby comes out and is put on your chest. A great way to continue tummy time for your new little one is skin to skin. As baby grows you can use tummy time as a way to play and interact together. How often should baby be on their tummy? In my opinion most of their waking hours. Strive for a minimum of 20-60 minutes per day. This can be done in short segments 1-2 minutes at a time. I recommend putting baby on their tummy after every diaper change.

What if my baby hates Tummy Time? Many babies will get frustrated being on their tummy at first. This is normal and working on it frequently throughout the day for short periods of time will help your baby learn to love Tummy Time. Why does my baby need Tummy Time? Tummy Time is extremely beneficial for babies to learn about their surroundings develop new brain patterns as well as motor skills and strengthen their muscles in their back, neck and trunk. Tummy Time also helps to prevent plagiocephaly (flattening of the skull), torticollis (neck tightness) and helps baby to reach their developmental milestones. What are some fun Tummy Time activities? There are several ways to do tummy time. When babies are 0-2 months try doing Tummy to Tummy, baby laying on their tummy on top of your tummy. Lap Sooth, baby will lay face down on your lap or the Down Carry, cradle carry baby face down in your arms. As baby gets older and stronger you can play Airplane, hold baby under hips and lift them up or use your legs while lying down to support baby. Make Tummy Time fun and interactive by getting on the floor with baby, singing songs, reading books and playing with toys. For more information you may contact Dr. Alayna Pagnani-Gendron at HealthPro Chiropractic & Acupuncture, 4101 Greenbriar Dr #135, Houston, TX 77098, 281-506-0105. healthprochiro.com. journey can become real and expansive. We begin to see that there are many colors between black and white. If we can soften our rigid views of the world, first finding acceptance and compassion for the self in all of its expressions, and then perhaps embrace important characteristics within us that have been denied. Some forgiveness may even be required. Consequently, we may just find the space to evolve into a higher vibration of the ultimate self. That’s why we’re here.

“Your Soul is your ultimate guidance system. You can think of your Soul as the compass, map, and destination all in one.” ~ Aletheia Luna

Lose Yourself to Find Yourself by Lin Weiss

P

aradoxical in its simplicity, this common phrase offers a succinct commentary on the path to enlightenment. “Enlightenment” as defined by the process of discovering the true self. For most of us, this process only begins after the lower self has really made a mess of things in its quest to be the One. However, it is not the One. There is a traditional Cherokee parable of an Elder Cherokee Chief teaching his grandson about life… “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt and ego. The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. This same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person too.” The grandson thought about this for a moment and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old chief simply replied, “The one you decide to feed.” This parallels the journey from the lower self to the acknowledgement of, and eventual dwelling within the Higher Self. This High Self, or aspect of the monad, is not separate in the knowledge of its true and Divine nature. As an integral part of the whole - this individuated self comes to know itself as One with all that is manifest (including the lower self), as well as un-manifest. There are many false faces or identities we may explore in any given incarnation as we learn and grow through the personality/ egoic archetypes of an earthly life. You are not the container, but the content. It is through our interactions with others, as we portray these varied personalities consciously or unconsciously as children, parents, entrepreneurs, co-workers, athletes, bosses, victims, caregivers, spouses, slaves, heterosexual, homosexual, masculine, feminine, anima, animus, that we often realize we are much more than we realized. Losing our small identifications to something greater and acknowledging our divine selves helps us to cohabitate with, understand and adjust the false faces that may or may not serve us well. It is at this point that our authentic, spiritual

The potential for self-destruction resides where there is a strong fear of losing control. This can become a dominant pattern due to early trauma or negative childhood experience. Ironically, Spirituality requires the deconstruction of the lower self, which is the original wounded-child that must be acknowledged, embraced by the higher self, loved, forgiven and ultimately healed in order to evolve into enough faith/trust to pursue and dwell in the High Self. This is your sacred mission, should you choose to accept it. It is not mission impossible – however once it has begun it is impossible to turn back. There are many wisdom teachers, spiritual paths and teachings that can support this transformative and healing process of ascension.

“Shapeshifting requires the ability to transcend your attachments, in particular your ego attachments to identity and who you are. If you can get over your attachment to labeling yourself and your cherishing of your identity, you can be virtually anybody.” ~ Zeena Schreck Enlightenment is nothing but the discovery of the original face – the essential reality you brought into this life and the essential reality you will have to take with you when you die. All these layers gathered between birth and death will be left here, behind you. Discarding the container and discovering the content is the whole process of enlightenment. Lose yourself to find yourself.

The world of chiropractic is diverse and growing to meet patient needs. Many chiropractors offer several healing modalities in-house that are geared to take whole-person care to an integrated harmonious level. “Research shows that patient outcomes are far better with a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare needs,” says Herb. “Offering a variety of specialties like physical therapy, sports medicine, nutrition and natural pain relief in my practice means patients receive the care and amount of time they need. They are not limited by what I personally can offer or have time to provide.” Many chiropractic facilities nationwide employ acupuncturists and therapeutic massage therapists, offering diverse treatment options like functional medicine and cryotherapy—ice therapy— versus traditional heat therapy. Robertson provides complementary treatments ranging from nutrition to physical therapy and yoga because he has found it is important to incorporate multiple treatment philosophies, examining the same problem from different angles, saying, “Chiropractic integrates many safe modalities found to be more effective than opioids, for instance.” He notes that early chiropractic was actually integrative, with its founder, Donald David Palmer, promoting a healthy diet and calmer lifestyle a century ago.

Collaborative Options Progressive chiropractic now includes innovative approaches to treat the nervous system. The cutting-edge field of functional (or chiropractic) neurology, which reactivates partially non-functional neural pathways, is employed in cases like concussions, vertigo, migraines, pain syndromes, neuropathy and attention-deficit disorders. Massage modalities, combined with chiropractic, are widely recognized to significantly increase circulation and improve range

Training requirements for chiropractors vary by state. “Here in Oregon, chiropractic physicians—both legally and through our training—are taught to be primary care physicians,” says Doctor of Chiropractic Michael Herb, of the Absolute Wellness Center, in Eugene, Oregon. “We must complete extensive training not only on the musculoskeletal system, but also on managing various internal medical pathologies such as those related to the cardiovascular system, genitourinary conditions, obstetrics and gynecology. We also learn to perform minor surgical procedures.” Chiropractor Tom Hyland Robertson, of Whole Chiropractic Healthcare, in Odenton, Maryland, notes, “To limit chiropractic to two categories of traditional and integrative isn’t accurate. There are almost as many specialists among doctors of chiropractic (DC) as among medical doctors (M.D.). There are chiropractors that specialize in pediatrics, veterinary, orthopedics, internal medicine, neurology, radiology and other areas. Integrative chiropractic uses as many tools as possible from the realm of each doctor’s training.”

of motion. Acupuncture, when used in conjunction with chiropractic treatment, enhances muscle relaxation and fosters easier adjustments. Chiropractor Kody R. Johnson, of the Johnson Chiropractic and Holistic Health Center, in Columbia, Missouri, is board certified in acupuncture and employs dry needling to target trigger points in tight muscles. He also specializes in functional medicine. Hormone balance, nutritional inadequacies, the presence of heavy metals and genetic markers for disease are all considered in determining a patient’s overall health. “Chiropractic treatment addresses results of physical stress. Functional medicine looks at emotional and biochemical stress,” says Johnson. “The chiropractic paradigm is based on the premise that the body has an inborn ability to heal itself. If the only method a provider has to offer is chiropractic adjustments, then they’ll have cases where the patient’s condition doesn’t fully improve because there might be other factors at play, including nutritional deficiencies, toxicities and emotional stress. When we address other relevant issues, we find that patients ‘hold’ their adjustments longer.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, multimedia artist and author of books in the spirituality and alternative health genres.
