Barnstable Academy is a college preparatory school that provides academic excellence in a warm and supportive environment designed to help students in grades 6-12 thrive.

1

Our

Approach Barnstable Academy’s teachers are dedicated to building relationships and genuinely caring about their students. With no more than fourteen students in a class, each student is seen, supported, and personally encouraged to be their best selves.

2

Our commitment to academic excellence shines through our AP, Honors, and College Preparatory courses. In addition to our core curriculum, students may choose from unique physical and non-physical electives and enrichment courses to explore interests and have a wellrounded school experience.

3

COLLEGE PREPARATORY Our college-preparatory curriculum, post-secondary support, and robust extracurricular offerings give students an advantage as they pursue their future goals. We offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and our students perform well on the AP exams. Students have access to a dedicated, on-campus College Advisor who walks each student and their family through the college selection and application process. Barnstable Academy students consistently are accepted to the colleges and universities they identify as their first choice, and many receive significant scholarships for their education. For students who find their passion in the arts, we provide the space and guidance for them to build a robust portfolio which they can submit to the schools of their choice. This gives students an advantage over those applying from schools without such opportunities.

ENDORSEMENTS Barnstable Endorsements demonstrate student commitment to a field of study by taking a concentration of classes in high school. It is a way to show colleges, universities, or future employers how knowledgeable and passionate a student is about a specific academic domain. By focusing additional learning in an area of interest, students receive additional credibility on their transcripts. The Endorsement positions them above students who have only completed the minimum requirements for graduation.

Endorsements currently available: • STEM • Humanities • Visual & Performing Arts

NATIONAL HONOR

We are proud to be a chapter of the prestigious National Honor Society (NHS). This Chapter accepts students who meet its rigorous criteria within the areas of Scholarship, Character, Service, and Leadership. NHS is a highly competitive academic organization which inspires our students to work harder and participate in more community service in order to be eligible for induction. We have also expanded the Chapter to include the National Junior Honor Society for eighth-graders.

ATHLETICS At Barnstable Academy, students have the opportunity to participate in a varsity athletics program. With our small school environment, more students have a chance to be a part of a team. Our Varsity sports teams practice during our afternoon electives, allowing students to have more family time in the evenings. We compete as part of the Tri-County Athletic League and games occur after the school day.

BARNSTABLE For students who want to accelerate a class, learn better in a one-on-one environment, or can use extra support, we offer our Barnstable EDGE program. This personalized experience allows students to take courses individually with a teacher who can focus solely on the student’s strengths and learning goals.

Homework can cause stress for both students and their families. In our Bengal Den, students have a dedicated space on campus to spend time working on their homework and receive help from our staff. They may attend during the day or after school.

*EDGE and Bengal Den have additional fees

STUDENT SUPPORT

We strive to help all our students succeed and achieve their personal best. For some students, this means helping to discover their potential and to translate it into excellence. For others, it may mean providing additional academic support. Accent Reading Accent Reading is a class offered to all middle school students and some high school students for reading support. Specific skills are broken down and practiced individually and then applied to different genres, utilizing strategies from Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, and Lindamood-Bell. The course also focuses on written responses to the reading material. Executive Functioning Our middle school utilizes a colorcoded organizational system to support teaching Executive Functioning skills. These students are also given planners that our teachers sign at the end of each class to support the students’ planning and organizational skill development.

12

Middle school students meet once a week during the afternoon elective period to learn and apply organizational strategies. Studying and test-taking skills are also discussed. The idea of metacognition is essential in this class, as students need to understand how they best learn. Students review their grade book, look at overall patterns in their work, and identify areas on which they can improve. In addition, all of our middle school students take a weekly social skills workshop. Workshops Our more significant assignments for both middle and high schoolers, such as our Science Fair and thesis projects, are chunked into smaller sections with accompanying deadlines and checklists. Students who could benefit from extra support in a class have the option to attend a workshop up to twice a week in Accent Reading, executive functioning, math, science, foreign language, English, or history.

OUR STAFF The Barnstable staff is made up of educated, positive, and passionate individuals who genuinely care about their students and one another. Our teachers work together for the betterment of our students; we encourage cross-curricular collaboration between our individual classes and departments. We strive to create classes that engage and expand the thinking and skills of each student. With our small school environment, teachers can build positive relationships with their students and help them grow. Students here are not merely a number but are seen and recognized daily. Teachers stand at the door of their classroom and greet each student as they enter, following the model of Capturing Kids’ Hearts. This allows students to connect with each of their teachers every day for every class.

13

RECORDING STUDIO Our campus has a full recording studio complete with professional grade equipment and instruments. Students can explore a musical avenue of interest to them, e.g. create an album, work on a portfolio, learn to produce their own music using advanced computer software or they can hang out and jam with their friends!

ART With our incredible art studio and art teacher, students can build a portfolio to submit to colleges and display in art shows. In our studio, they can learn cartooning, sketching, watercolors, oil painting, sculpture, wood-burning, collage, and more.

14

STUDENT LIFE Outside of the academic experience, students have numerous opportunities to connect with other students and increase their extracurricular involvement, including Community Service Club, Ski Club, and Hiking Club.

TECHNOLOGY Barnstable believes in utilizing technology in a meaningful, educational way. From our Mac computer lab courses, Vex Robotics, Occulus Gos, and 3D printers, we teach to prepare our students to be ready for the cutting-edge world of technology and the careers available to them. 15
