s I write this, the air is beginning to change. Oh, it’s still officially summer. But there’s something different – the light perhaps. The cicadas seem louder in the evenings. And I believe the very top of at least one maple tree in the dell behind Booth Library is beginning to look a little less green. Something’s coming. In this transitional time between the end of one academic year and the beginning of the next, we take stock of the many comings and goings at D&E. You can read about most of them in this issue of Forward. From activities and achievements from the spring, to campus improvements (page 4), to news about academic programs (page 8) and Senator Athletics (page 10), D&E is continuing to change and adapt to fully “prepare and inspire students for success and for thoughtful engagement in the world.” For everyone on board, it’s a very exciting time! The full measure of Davis & Elkins College is best expressed in President ‘Buck’ Smith’s Statement of Condition – this issue’s “From the Heart of Halliehurst” – on pages 26 and 27. His personal introduction to the 2010-2011 Honor Roll of Donors is a must-read for all who care and seek to further the College’s mission. It is a thank you to those who faithfully shepherd our students through generous annual support to Davis & Elkins College. Alumni – don’t miss the registration form for Homecoming Weekend, which is bound into this issue on page 16. Please complete your registration as soon as possible. Of the many campus improvements under way this year, none has had a greater impact than the new entrance to campus on Randolph Avenue – the Myles Gate. Located where the Elkins Tire Company building once stood, the Myles Gate green space connects views and visitors to our beautiful campus. When the statue was dedicated, this was the view. Well Done. Newly retired Student Life Office Manager Carolyn Church and Assistant Director of Financial Planning McRae Heck were honored at the annual employee picnic held in the Augusta Dance Pavilion in June. Looking Good! Ongoing Improvements Make D&E Shine
“W
hat a beautiful campus!” We hear those words often, especially from visiting high school students and their families. With our amazing views, unspoiled woods, and beautiful architectural “bones,” our College surrounds students with a collegiate ideal – but one that still wrestles with wear and tear. At first glance, the campus is “amazing,” but roads, playing fields, vehicles, buildings and grounds all need constant upkeep to ensure the quality of our student experience meets and exceeds expectations. After all, students live here. Since 2008, the College has been investing in projects to rejuvenate the campus. This spring and summer have been no exception, with an intense pace under way. Thanks to the generosity of several donors, we have been able to tackle some of the most difficult challenges. All to the betterment of our student experience.

The change in our campus entrance is remarkable. Myles Gate has transformed the first impression families visiting D&E receive. The rolling landscape is green now with a carpet of new grass, accented by native stone. Donor and Trustee June Myles selected the boulders from her own land and, working with J.F. Allen Company, moved them to the new entrance area, artfully placing them around walking and seating areas. In April, period-style lights were installed. The handsome fixtures match others on campus and reflect the time of the original Graceland estate’s founding. Winding paths lead toward campus, connecting the campus and community. The new granite sign, custom crafted in Georgia, weighs nearly 12,000 pounds. Trees and other landscaping will be added soon, with the arrival of cooler fall temperatures.

Storm Recovery
Two windstorms with tornado-like force swept through campus twice this year, knocking down and damaging many of our large trees. Although disappointed at the extensive losses, the change has opened up new views and removed unidentified overhead hazards. Many trees were uprooted by the storms; others were split. One fell on a parked car and shattered the windshield. Emergency crews worked through the night to clear downed trees from roadways and power lines. The result is some new landscaping on campus.
New Bus
Athletic teams and other student organizations spend a good deal of time on the road. Now, travelling will be greatly improved thanks to the donation of a 21-passenger bus by Trustee Dick Seybolt, D&E Class of ’63 and the late Bill Robbins, ’56. The customized vehicle features extra leg room, comfortable, monogrammed seats, plenty of interior space to stow gear, and great handling features so D&E teams and others can arrive confidently and in style. The bus was designed and manufactured by Diamond Coach Corporation, in Oswego, Kansas, where Dick serves as Chief Executive Officer.
Golf Academy
Head Golf Coach Dr. Wally Edgell joined D&E with the understanding that he would do more than coach; He would build a program – to serve the College and wider community. And a central component of his vision was to create an indoor, year-round golf academy unlike anything else in West Virginia. The new academy, made possible through generous help from trustee and alumnus Dick Seybolt, ’63, lets the team control the practice schedule – and puts the power of the weather in check. Designed and installed by one of the nation’s top indoor golf turf companies – Turf Solutions – the academy course includes seven different grass heights, a sand trap and “tough putts,” all designed to develop good habits. Built on a contoured base of gravel, limestone dust and sand, the academy, says Coach Edgell, is essential to mastering the short game. He notes: “Tournaments are won 100 yards in.” Even so, an adjacent chipping and driving area will allow players to work on longer shots, while the computer-controlled Golf Simulator provides the challenge of renowned championship courses. Coach Edgell has also created a clubhouse and locker area for the team as part of the Academy. Here, players can study, watch films of their own game and relax. “I want to win tournaments,” adds Coach Edgell, “but our first priority is academics. This Academy serves the total player and will help us develop individually and as a team.” Justin Tanner, right, demonstrates his putting technique.

Harper-McNeeley Auditorium
Davis & Elkins College is home to the largest and most robust auditorium in the Mountain Highlands – Harper-McNeeley Auditorium within the Hermanson Campus Center. It was completed in 1976. After more than 30 years of continuous use, it was overdue for a major upgrade. Thanks to the foresight and generous commitment of Trustee June Myles, the Hall was refurbished this spring – in time for the arrival of the West Virginia Governor's School for the Arts and its 100 most gifted high school artists. Visitors to “Harper-Mac” will first notice an elegant new lobby. Cream and mocha walls, enhanced lighting, new carpeting, and display cases for the Augusta store welcome you. Adjacent to the lobby are new restrooms – large and nicely appointed. Next, the auditorium itself features new, state-of-theart lighting and sound systems. Performers and audience members alike can readily appreciate these improvements. But behind the scenes, there’s more – new HVAC and sprinkler systems to enhance comfort and peace of mind.
Eshleman Science Center
The large lecture hall in Eshleman Science Center is an essential meeting space, serving the entire campus community for classes, assemblies and presentations. Roof leaks and frequent use were taking their toll. Ceiling repairs came first, then new paint and flooring, and reupholstered seating. An attractive wood laminate floor now covers the front lecture area. The ground floor of Eshleman Science Center also suffered extensive water damage due to faulty drainage that required the entire Business Department to move to the Robert C. Byrd Center for Hospitality and Tourism. With spaces cleared, D&E maintenance went to work, addressing drainage problems, replacing floor tile and carpeting, and repainting all of the classroom and office spaces. Ready in time for the new academic year, the Augusta Heritage Center was able to use the classrooms for its workshops this summer.

In 2009, Darby Hall was completely renovated to provide a new residence space for freshmen women. In 2010, Presidential Hall was refurbished, and also International Hall, which was renamed Moyer Hall to recognize the improvements made possible by the Moyer Family – Trustee Bill and Joan, their alumnus son John, ’86, and their daughter Nancy. This year, 2011, we tackled Gribble Hall. Popular for its central location, the residence hall has undergone extensive changes this summer. Newly tiled bathrooms, new flooring throughout, new paint in every room, exterior enhancements, upgraded walkways, new windows and a completely remodeled lounge area will welcome D&E men as Gribble residents this year.

Athletic Fields
The J.F. Allen Company has transformed the muddy, flood prone Davis & Elkins College athletic fields into a new complex engineered to provide a better playing and training area for D&E athletes. The project was made possible by company Chairman John C. Allen and his wife, D&E Trustee Joyce Allen. The firm created nearly 1,600 feet of drainage around the fields, raised the fields by adding 20,000 cubic yards of fill and top soil, installed check dams for erosion control, moved two buildings and created a new pedestrian walkway. Work began last fall and wrapped up in July, resulting in three new well-drained fields for women’s softball and men’s and women’s soccer. Art Department
It’s no stretch to say that the new Art Department is a work of art. The transformation of the ground floor of Hermanson Campus Center has been almost total, thanks to a major grant from Trustee June Myles and the Myles Family Foundation. In the art room that served generations of D&E students who studied drawing, painting, weaving and ceramics, new students will now find a bright studio space, a graphic design studio, gallery and reception area, and offices. Future plans include transforming what was for many years affectionately called "The Pit" into a modern dance studio.

Academic Leader Dr. Michael Mihalyo, Jr., Succeeds Thacker as Provost
P
resident G.T. ‘Buck’ Smith and the Trustees of Davis & Elkins College have appointed Dr. Michael P. Mihalyo, Jr., most recently Chair of the Division of Fine Arts at Brevard College in North Carolina, as Provost and Professor of Music. He succeeds Dr. Victor L. Thacker who retired on July 31.
Dr. Mihalyo, who holds degrees from Duquesne University and West Virginia University, is widely experienced as a teacher and higher education administrator. As Provost, he serves as the College’s chief academic officer. After five years as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and Dean of Faculty at Bethany College, Dr. Mihalyo served as interim Vice President for Academic Programs of the Appalachian College Association (ACA), a consortium of 35 private liberal arts colleges and universities serving over 45,000 students and 3,700 faculty. In commenting on Dr. Mihalyo’s appointment, President Smith said: “When I asked the faculty for recommendations of a possible successor to Dr. Thacker, Dr. Mihalyo’s name was suggested by several who had experienced his leadership at the Appalachian College Association. We are delighted he has now decided to join us in this key leadership role.” Commenting on the search process, President Smith noted:

“When Dr. Thacker announced in May his decision to retire, we knew we would have a challenge to find a successor to carry on the extraordinary leadership he and Associate Provost Dr. Joe Roidt have given to the academic program. Members of the Faculty were most helpful in offering their best thoughts on the scope of responsibilities for the position, as well as suggestions of possible candidates. “We are especially eager that Dr. Roidt continue to share significantly in the academic leadership of the College. He and Dr. Mihalyo have explored possible ways in which the duties might best be divided between them.” As Founding Co-Director and recent Dean of the ACA Institute for Teaching and Learning funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Dr. Mihalyo is known by many D&E faculty who have attended the Institute over the years. Their comments provide a glimpse into how highly he is regarded: ‘Michael is keenly aware of the plight of small liberal arts colleges in America… ‘From my conversations with Michael I thought he was solid, a good person to work with, good people skills… ‘He obviously is a sophisticated man with significant administrative experience... ‘While Michael is interested in the Arts, he has a more universal vision as well. He spoke to the group about Learning Outcomes, and the needs of students in the
realms of science, math and English. He seems, and this is backed up by his very impressive CV, to have a very cohesive grasp of the whole picture regarding a college like D&E… ‘I would be very comfortable with Michael Mihalyo as Provost, and frankly, since you and I spoke about it, I have been quite excited by the prospect. D&E needs a Provost with creativity and the ability to collaborate with the faculty, the staff, and the administration. We need a Provost who understands our Appalachian heritage, and will work with Augusta. We also need a Provost who will be able to work with the community, and will work to bridge gaps… ‘I am very pleased with Dr. Mihalyo's vision about our college and see him as a good fit as Provost.’ “As a person experienced in the larger higher education and funding communities, Dr. Mihalyo will bring a critically important dimension to the Provost position,” added Smith. “At the same time, as a gifted teacher and keyboard artist, he is deeply committed to reaching out to students and those in the wider college family. I believe those who work closely with him will find him to be a sterling friend as well.” Since his arrival on campus August 1, Dr. Mihalyo has impressed the campus community with his “management by walking around” style. His engaging and listening manner – combined with decisiveness – are already making their mark. Residing in the Gate House, he and his Dalmatian companion Sadie are a familiar presence throughout the campus.

New Study Abroad Program Opens New Doors
D
avis & Elkins College is partnering with one of the country’s leading study abroad programs to provide student centered options for international study in universities around the world.
Knowledge Exchange Institute (KEI) opened its first on-campus office in the United States at D&E in February, where it serves D&E students as well as coordinates international programs for more than 400 colleges and universities nationwide. Commenting on the arrangement, President ‘Buck’ Smith said: “This is an important new dimension to our long-standing commitment to providing international opportunities for D&E students. And by serving students at colleges and universities across the country, we are contributing to the larger academic community in still another significant way.” Julie Pollard, KEI’s Study Abroad Advisor located on the Davis & Elkins campus, helps students
select or design study abroad programs that meet their interests. She also works with faculty to identify professional experiences rooted in cultural exchange. KEI has programs already established at 14 leading universities in Bulgaria, China, Ecuador, England, France, Ireland, India, Kenya, Russia, Spain, Tanzania and Thailand. Students can opt for a semester or a summer abroad, with some choosing a “gap year” experience prior to their freshman year. According to Pollard, KEI strives to provide an authentic cultural and academic experience in the host country. She points out that one of the most important aspects of KEI’s approach is that students are fully immersed in host countries. “Our students don’t live in an American bubble,” Pollard says. “They have an authentic cultural experience, studying in foreign schools with foreign faculty. That provides a lifetime of memories and the most informed study abroad experience possible. My role is to counsel the students on their options and help them choose the right program based on what
By partnering with D&E, program details are simplified for students. All arrangements, including tuition and fees, are simply part of a student’s package with Davis & Elkins College. That convenience, plus Pollard’s presence on campus and KEI’s international reputation, make study abroad highly feasible and appealing for students. D&E students have already taken advantage of the program. Sophomore Megan Gyongyosi studied in Thailand during the spring semester. And two other students are registered for a semester in London this fall. Pollard, who moved to Elkins from New York, NY, in January, says she is enjoying the friendliness of the campus and the community. A native of Pennsylvania, she has a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and is also certified in American Sign Language. She has visited 36 foreign countries and 12 of KEI’s 14 program locations. Headquartered in New York, KEI has a long-standing relationship with West Virginia University and several other colleges within the Appalachian College Association. Through its new office at D&E, KEI will be a hub for international study for the region.

J.B. Bialek Memorial Press Box Dedication Bialek Family Opens Season and New Facility for Senator Baseball
T
he J.B. Bialek Memorial Press Box was dedicated Saturday, March 26, in a public ceremony at the D&E Baseball Field with members of the Bialek family, the D&E Baseball Team and Baseball Alumni and families. Senator Baseball Coach Ron Palmer presented D&E alumnus and Trustee Jim Bialek and his wife, Karen, with a plaque in memory of their son, J.B., who was honored in the creation of the new facility. The plaque was later permanently installed on the Press Box. Visitors to the dedication were able to spend time with the Bialeks, and also enjoyed tours of the press box as well as refreshments from the new concession area it provides. Held during the College’s Spring Baseball reunion, many friends and other alumni were present for the event as well as the families of current Senator baseball players. Blessed with sunshine and success against Bluefield State, the Senator family enjoyed a special day of fellowship and community. A 1974 alumnus, a former player and assistant coach for the Senator baseball team as well as a College Trustee since 2006, Jim Bialek was actively involved in construction of the new facility, which began last fall. From design to material selection to working

with contractors and seeding new turf around the site, Jim worked tirelessly to ensure the new 14’ x 28’ facility would enhance the game experience for players and fans. Discussions related to the project began more than a year ago, when Jim approached Coach Palmer about it. He noted: “D&E has been the only team in the conference without a press box. So after discussing the needs with Coach Palmer, we decided this was a project we wanted to go ahead with.” Jim, Coach Palmer and Executive Director of D&E’s Physical Plant Ron Selders picked out the site, which is behind the home plate stands. Although originally planned as a 10’ x 20’ structure, the Bialeks opted to expand the upstairs for seating, adding wings to each side, and viewing windows. There are two rows of seats – enough for 15-18 people plus a third row of stools with a counter area as well as a separate area for the scorekeeper and announcer. Jim designed the facility himself and called on friends to help make it a reality. Contractor Bruce Howell, Rob Herron and Richie Smith provided construction; and the large viewing windows were donated in honor of Sue Russetti Talbott, Class of ’73.

Stiles Completes First D&E Season
Baseball Wins 30+ Games
The D&E Baseball team had a very successful season as it finished 31-16 overall and 1811 in WVIAC competition. It is only the second team in D&E history to win 30-plus games. The team also received the WVIAC Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row. Pitcher Zach McElroy (First Team), catcher Eric Doyle (First Team), outfielder Evan Gazza (Second Team), shortstop Matt Barr (Second Team), outfielder Anthony Ragos (Second Team), pitcher Jared Winder (Honorable Mention) and outfielder Marcus Weese (Honorable Mention) received All-WVIAC honors, while McElroy, Doyle, Gazza, and Ragos were named to All-Region teams. Coach Ronnie Palmer summed up the season, noting: “I thought

Men’s Tennis Receives ITA Recognition
Coach Otis Cutshaw continues to lay the foundation for a strong program as the men’s tennis team completed its second season. The Senators finished 3-7 overall and 2-6 in WVIAC play, but Agustin Ochoa was named to the allconference team for the second consecutive season. Ochoa, Linn Baxa, and Joshua Hays were recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as Scholar-Athletes for earning a 3.5+ grade point average. “I am very proud of the improvements we have made in the last two years and I expect us to continue to improve in the WVIAC,” stated Coach Cutshaw.
Barbeque & Concert to Support Senator Athletics Enjoy “Pig on the Porch” September 24 By Kimberly Stiles, Head Coach,Softball Davis & Elkins College Athletics will be hosting a Pig on the Porch barbeque and concert featuring the Davisson Brothers Band on Saturday, September 24 on the porch at Graceland. The all-youcan-eat barbeque will begin at 5 p.m. and conclude before the concert starts at 9 p.m. Guests may purchase a ticket for both the concert and the Pig on the Porch barbeque which includes: barbeque, sausage with peppers and onions, beef brisket, side dishes, dessert and beverages for $40. A concert only ticket may be purchased for $10. The event will benefit Senator Athletics.

1955 In January, Ralph Kortyna and his wife, Bonnie, Turtle Creek, PA, enjoyed island hopping off the coast of Croatia and on to Prague and Eastern France. They enjoyed biking, skiing, and making wine; however, watching the Super Bowl in Europe was a challenge. The Rev. Dr. Syngman Rhee, Richmond, VA, has been a professor at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond for the past 12 years. He recently spoke at the Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, VA, as the first speaker in the “Guest Speaking Missions” series. Syngman served the Presbyterian Church (USA) as associate director of its Worldwide Ministries Division, was moderator of the Presbyterian Church (USA) General Assembly from 2000 to 2001, served as a delegate to the World Council of Churches in Canberra, Australia, in 1991, and was the first Asian-American to serve as president of the National Council of Churches in the

1960 David H. and Della Mae Pope Semendinger, ’60, Fairfax, VA, recently enjoyed a river cruise on the Seine from Paris to Normandy. During their cruise they were reminded of how small the world is when they met D&E alumnus Gerald Slifer, ’51, Lakewood, NJ, who had attended D&E from 1948-51. Gerald was on the same cruise!

50th Reunion at Homecoming October 14–16
Patricia “Trish” Bethany, Grenada, West Indies, is doing well and stays very busy with her photography and painting. For the past two years she has been restoring paintings by American artist Colleen Browning and in July will be showing her own work in a photography exhibit. Trish was delighted in January 2010 with a visit from Ruth Herbert Gnagy, ’59, and her husband, Bill, Normal, IL. Ruth and Bill were on a cruise which stopped on Grenada and Trish was able to meet them and
Elizabeth “Liz” Reed Branch and her husband, Bill, Little Rock, AR, have enjoyed serving on three continents within the last year or so. In March and April 2010, they served through the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship of the PCUSA as accompaniers in Colombia, South America. They lived in Edinburgh, Scotland, from October to December 2010 while Bill was interim associate pastor at St. Giles Cathedral. In the U.S., Liz and Bill are members of the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance National Response Team (NRT). Since 2009, Bill and Liz have been deployed at various times, most recently after the tornadoes in Joplin, MO, and Glade Spring, VA. Liz writes, “these opportunities have provided much meaning and joy to our lives,” and although some of their experiences may be one-time events, they plan to continue their volunteer work with NRT. Recently Robert “Bob” Livingston, ’61, New Bern, NC, was hosted by James Nast, ’62, Rutherford, NJ, at a Members-Guest Tournament at Jim’s golf club in Duck, NC. Earlier in the week, Jim met a new member and introduced himself. Following a brief conversation, it turns out the new member was Dr. Norman Sheets, Southern Shores, NC, former Dean of Students, Chair of the Department of Physical Education and Director of Athletics, when Bob and Jim were at D&E more than 50 years ago. Jim made arrangements for Norman to join Bob and him for a beer at the conclusion of the tournament. Bob told Dr. Sheets the beer they were drinking was very symbolic and recalled an incident when he was president of his fraternity. The fraternity had violated the college alcoholic beverage policy in place at that time. As a consequence both Bob

and fraternity brother Sheldon “Shelly” Elias, ’60, Cranbury, NJ, were suspended from campus for a week and were told to go home. As Jim and Norman drank their beer Bob told the story and everyone had a good laugh. When Bob returned home after the tournament, he found the letter Dr. Sheets had written to his parents explaining the suspension. A copy was forwarded to Jim to share with Dr. Sheets. Bob said it was a real treat to catch up with Dr. Sheets and to recapture a phase of their youth. P.S. Everyone enjoyed the beer. Norman is also an alumnus of Davis & Elkins College, class of 1958. In January, Judy Lynn Beckhan Brewster, Owings Mills, MD, Ed Pencek, ’60, Fairfax Station, VA, and David and Paula Ingram Ferreby, Fairfax, VA, enjoyed their first “annual” trip on a private yacht in the British Virgin Islands. Charles H. “Chuck” Butt and his wife, Jean Ann, Bonita Springs, FL, are proud grandparents of their second grandson, Luke James Savage, born February 7, 2011, in Clearwater, FL. Chuck is a retired Major in the USAF and keeps busy as an active realtor and part-time in the golf department at Bass Pro Shops. He was a pilot for six years in the USAF and is a Vietnam veteran. Chuck was a member of the 1962-63 D&E golf team and is very thankful to D&E for exposing him to the AFROTC when he was enrolled. He pledged the TKE fraternity and recently attended his wife’s national sorority convention. 1970 Susan Skiff Allen and her husband, David, Carpinteria, CA, have been married since 1975. They have one son, 28, and twin daughters, 25. During the school year, Susan is a resource specialist at Canalino Elementary School. In 2009, Susan was named “Educator of the Year” by Learning Ally. Using her own unique system for making reading fun, Susan has been credited with helping her students get past their fear of learning difficulties. In their spare time, Susan and David volunteer with Sealwatch, monitoring harbor seals during birthing season. They spend their summers at their cottage in British Columbia, Canada. Larry Hunt, ’67, and his wife, Jayne Ellen, threw a coin in the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy, to ensure their return to Rome. See 1967.

Purdum Goddin, ’50, Professor Emerita of English, Elkins, WV. Gregory W. Judge, Kent, WA, is a widower and semi-retired. He continues to teach for City University of Seattle where he has taught for 30 years. Greg has three daughters who now have families of their own, including his six grandchildren, whom he loves traveling to visit in Thailand and New Jersey. Last year, Greg’s travels included two new countries, bringing his count to 45. During 2011, Greg will be visiting Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland and Northern Ireland – “so many places, so little time.” Dr. Vicki J. Schell, Pensacola, FL, and Rose Mary Isner Johnston, ’69, San Diego, CA, were in Elkins recently to help Dr. Jerry Wagener, former Professor and Chair of Physics, 1964-1969, and his wife, Jean, former instructor of Mathematics, 1964-1969, Northfield, MA, celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. 1973 Donald L. Teter, Monterville, WV, recently held a book signing of the second edition of his 1977 book Goin Up Gandy: A History of the Dry Fork Region of Randolph and Tucker Counties, West Virginia. Goin’ Up Gandy details the history of the settlement of the Dry Fork region, the Civil War era, and the boom times of the logging and railroad industries. Don is also currently on the roster of the “History Alive!” program through the WV Humanities Council portraying writer, artist and Civil War topographer Porte Crayon (David Hunter Strother) in 1877. James D. Wells and his wife, Jill, live in Nitro, WV. In September 2010, Jim was recognized by the International Public Management Association for Human Resources (IPMA-HR), Eastern Region, at the Training & Development Conference in College Park, MD, and received the Charles H. Cushman Award for his outstanding and lasting contribution to the field of public human resource administration. For numerous years, Jim has maintained professional certification credentials of SPHR and IPMA-CP. After retiring in February 2008, with more than 33 years of active service with the State of West Virginia, Jim established his own human resource consulting firm, Human Resource Respond, LLC.

Their son, Micah, is a junior at the University of Georgia, majoring in math, and daughter, Addie, graduated from UGA in May with a B.S. in Middle School Education specializing in math and science. She served as a clinical instructor with junior and senior dental hygiene students at WVU. Randy accepted a position as a dispatcher with Coach America in San Francisco. Robert Maradei is a Psychiatric Nurse Case Manager at Landstuhl Regional Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany. It is the largest American military hospital outside of the U.S. He writes: “It is an honor and privilege to take care of the women, men and families who ensure that we remain safe,” and adds he is humbled by the experience.

2005 Michael A. DiPasquale and Danielle Cutright, ’08, Elkins, WV, were married on July 8, 2011, in Buckhannon, WV. Danielle is an R.N. at Grafton City Hospital. Mike taught math for four years and coached for five years at Pocahontas County High School in Dunmore, WV. He served as assistant coach for the Warriors boys basketball team and as the head coach for the baseball team, leading the baseball team to three straight sectional titles, two regional championships and the first-ever state tournament appearance in 2009. In 2010, Mike began teaching 8th grade math at Tygarts Valley High School, Mill Creek, WV, while continuing to coach the Pocahontas County High School baseball team. In June 2011, Mike was appointed head coach for the Tygarts Valley High School Lady Bulldogs basketball team and will also serve as the assistant football coach for the middle school.

Statement of
Condition
To the Devoted Friends of Davis & Elkins College: Last September – in one single act – the College’s 106-year financial paradigm shifted. The magnificent Ten Million Dollar gift from Jim McDonnell and the James S. McDonnell Family Foundation changed the present and future course of Davis & Elkins College. Not merely because of its magnitude. But by its selfless and enlightened purpose as well. Roughly half is designated to pay off the College’s external debt, accumulated over many years. The remainder will be added to the permanent endowment, thus helping secure the College’s future. Does this mean we’re now on easy street? No, not by a long shot. We’re still a small college in the heart of Appalachia, highly dependent on student tuition, and the goodwill and generosity of those who care deeply for the place. But in contrast to the cliff hanging of past generations, we’re now able to move forward with confidence and hopeful anticipation.
Ten Principles
The McDonnell gift of course had a context. On July 1 three years ago, we laid out a game plan for the years immediately ahead. Underlying those efforts would be certain basic principles we would follow. Expressed in terms of what “We believe,” they included: • Whatever we do, we must do well. • Our primary responsibility is to make a difference in the lives of those we serve, especially our students. • There is no limit to what can be accomplished if it makes no difference who gets the credit. • There is more good in the world than bad, and most people, most of the time, are trying to do the right thing. • It is not our resources that limit our decisions; but our decisions that limit our resources. • Our best answers often come from within, and from our own experience. • We must listen carefully, and care deeply for every other person. • It is better to act, albeit imperfectly, than to wait forever for the perfect move. • Gratitude is the highest form of human expression. • If we treat people as they are, they will stay as they are. But if we treat them for what they might be and might become, they will become those better selves.
Six Priorities
Also on that July morning three years ago, we made clear we would focus on six priorities, all beginning with the letter “R”: • Reduce Expenses. • Recruit Students. • Retain Students.
• Raise Funds. • Renew Programs. • Reach for New Opportunities.
I have tried to keep you apprised of progress on each of these initiatives through the weekly Monday Letter to the campus community (posted also on the D&E website Home Page), as well as through periodic editions of From the Heart of Halliehurst. Rather than cover that ground again here, let me give you a bit more detail on the financial picture. 26 | Davis & Elkins College Forward
Statement of
Condition The Earlier Scene
Prior to 2008, the College experienced several years of recurring deficits and negative cash flow, and accumulated significant debt to fund these shortfalls. Thanks to initiatives of former President Tom Mann and the Board of Trustees in 2007-08, expenses were reduced by roughly $1.2 million, representing about 10% of the annual budget. As a result, the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008 closed with a modest surplus of $20,261.
The Past Three Years
The first order of business three years ago was to reverse decades of stagnant and declining enrollment. Under the leadership of Executive Vice President Kevin Wilson, the 2009 entering class exceeded 300 full-time students – a 50.5% increase over the previous year – and representing the largest entering class since 1947. The quality too was higher with 63% of entering freshmen earning a high school GPA of 3.0 or better (compared to 42% in 2008). Fortunately, we have been able to sustain entering classes of 300 or more in each of the past two years, bringing the expected full-time enrollment this fall to 750, a nearly 50% increase in three years. The other major revenue source has been gifts. In October 2008 a miracle happened: Three anonymous friends – none of whom attended the College – offered to contribute up to $2.25 million if the College’s alumni and other friends would give $4.5 million during the three-year period ending June 30, 2011. With this 50% matching incentive – termed The New Dawn Challenge – folks again had hope, and began to believe in the possibilities of the future. And what happened? The Challenge was met on June 26, 2010, a full year ahead of schedule! This outpouring of gifts came from caring people all over the world, including a special new friend, Doris Buffett, who was drawn especially to our Highlands Scholars. As a result of these increases in enrollment and gifts – and by trying to watch every penny – we have been able to operate with surpluses ranging from $119,125 to $894,547 in each of the past three years. Short-term Accounts Payable are now current at 30 days. External debt has been reduced from $9.8 million to the present $3.7 million, the balance of which will be covered by the McDonnell gift. In addition, we have repaid $1,228,800 of what had earlier been borrowed from the endowment, and cash needs have been met without drawing on the line of credit. Capital improvements in excess of $5 million have been underwritten by private gifts, mostly from members of the Board of Trustees. It is my own belief that all this has been possible ultimately by the Grace of God, and the boundless dedication of our trustees, faculty and staff. As a result, we have transitioned from surviving major shortfalls of the past to sustaining the present operation of the College. Looking forward, we now need to secure the future. In that, we’re going to need your help through The D&E Fund and, for those in a position to do so, special gifts and bequests.
Planting Trees – Faith and Vision
Forty years ago just now, one of America’s leading philanthropists sent me a note with these words by Henry Van Dyke: “He that planteth a tree is a Servant of God. He provideth kindnesses for many generations, and faces that he hath not seen shall bless him.” A dear and generous friend, he then added: “So it is with a man or woman who provides essential endowments and builds necessary buildings. You know, it takes a rather special kind of person to make a generous gift or bequest. Ordinary persons, even when they are rich, can’t bring themselves to do it. What do they get for their money? What good can it possibly do them? Such financial backing is furnished by persons with faith and vision – persons unselfish enough to plant trees whose shade they themselves will never enjoy.” This little College has been immensely and richly blessed these past three years. Our even greater blessing is that as we move forward into the future, there still are such persons in the D&E family “unselfish enough to plant trees whose shade they themselves will never enjoy.”

You can! Your gift to The D&E Fund helps do all this – and much more. You see, tuition provides only 59 percent of the College’s total revenue. The D&E Fund helps make up the rest. It is, in fact, the lifeblood of the College. And the simplest and most direct way you can help the College fulfill its mission: To prepare and inspire students for success and for thoughtful engagement in the world.
Quality – Access – Sustainability We have made great progress in the past few years strengthening our programs, increasing scholarships, and improving the campus. But keeping Davis & Elkins College running effectively, and providing the programs and services that comprise a quality education, is expensive. To continue this forward momentum, we need EVERYONE to “get on board” with a gift to The D&E Fund.
Here are just a few of the ways that The D&E Fund helps every student, every day. Student Scholarships – More than 90% of our students receive some form of scholarship assistance. 65% of our students could not attend college without the help of need-based aid. The D&E Fund provides student scholarships, including our nationally recognized Highlands Scholars Program. Academic Programs – The D&E Fund supports faculty salaries, helping the College recruit and retain great faculty. It also provides funding for academic department budgets and helps ensure D&E can continue to offer distinctive, high quality programs. Student Success – The D&E Fund supports a number of programs that help “prepare students for success and for thoughtful engagement in the world,” including the Naylor Center for Teaching and Learning, the Career Management Center, and the Writing Center. Campus Upkeep – All who visit D&E marvel at the beauty of the campus. The D&E Fund helps us maintain buildings, keep up with mowing in the summer and snow removal in the winter, plant flowers, and keep the lights on!
Equipment & Technology for the Classroom – Today’s students prepare for careers where technology evolves almost daily. The D&E Fund gives professors and students the laboratory equipment, online resources, computers and software to help ensure they are ready. Library Resources – Books still have an important place in learning, but the Booth Library also delivers information through online journals, internet resources, and a computer lab that is open to students 24 hours per day. The D&E Fund helps make all this possible. Student Life – The D&E Fund supports a safe, healthy residence life and provides many experiences outside the classroom that help students grow and learn, like clubs and organizations, outdoor recreation, service and leadership opportunities, counseling and health care. Athletics – Intercollegiate sports are more competitive and more cost-intensive than ever before. The D&E Fund helps provide athletic scholarships, maintain athletic facilities, pay officials, support team travel, and make possible professional enhancement for coaches.

Estate gifts strengthen College, enable donors to make a difference in the lives that follow Providing for a future gift to Davis & Elkins College through one’s estate planning is one of the most profound ways that a person can express support for the College’s mission and help ensure that D&E continues to fulfill that mission with future generations of students. D&E was fortunate to receive a number of such gifts in 2010-2011.
William G. Carr, ’71
William G. Carr, ’71, a lifelong resident of Elkins, understood the vital contributions that Davis & Elkins College makes to the community of Elkins, and he cherished a close friendship with one of its most distinguished leaders—Dr. Thomas Richard Ross. Thus, when Carr died in 2009, he included in his will a generous unrestricted gift of $135,000 to Davis & Elkins College in honor of Dr. Ross.
Dr. Joseph Franklin Marsh, Jr.
A lifelong commitment to higher education and an honor received from D&E combined to inspire Dr. Joseph Franklin Marsh, Jr. to make annual contributions to Davis & Elkins College during his lifetime and to include the College as a beneficiary in his will. A distinguished leader in higher education, Marsh served as president of Waynesburg College (Waynesburg, PA) and Concord University (Athens, WV), and was awarded an honorary degree from Davis & Elkins College in 1968. His gift of nearly $200,000 to
Davis & Elkins College, made without restriction, is an expression of his support for higher education in West Virginia and his appreciation for the honorary degree bestowed upon him so many years ago.
William S. Robbins, ’56
William S. Robbins loved D&E with his whole heart, and he expressed that love with many generous gifts throughout his lifetime. Bill’s final gift to D&E was one he had arranged for many years earlier, when he named Davis & Elkins College as a beneficiary of his IRA fund. This gift was valued at more than $200,000 when it came to the College in December. Although Bill’s gift was unrestricted, the College decided to use a portion of it to help acquire the new Senators Bus, which will transport his beloved students to activities and competitions. Davis & Elkins College will also continue to receive income from a Charitable Lead Trust that Bill established in 2007.
Anna Dale Kek
Anna Dale Kek served as a professor of languages and English at Davis & Elkins College for many years, and her husband Evan R. Kek, who died in 1993, was a professor of history. Although the Keks moved to Venice, FL after their retirement in 1974, they never forgot their time at D&E. When Anna passed away last fall, an unrestricted bequest of $20,000 came to Davis & Elkins College.
Marie D. Martin
Marie D. Martin died in 2009, but students are still benefitting from her foresight in creating a bequest to support student scholarships at Davis & Elkins College. Marie and her husband Clay had established a trust for this purpose many years ago, and the trust provided three distributions totaling $75,000 for student scholarships.

family’s legacy with a gift through her will. A cash distribution combined with the proceeds from the sale of her book collection resulted in a gift of $50,000 which will be used to further strengthen the institution her husband’s family helped establish more than 100 years ago.

Nelson Parker Bard, Jr., died at home in Marietta, PA, Jan. 3, 2011, of renal failure after a valiant fight. Born Dec. 4, 1942, to Nelson P. Bard, Sr., and Mabel Grace Dickerson, he was married to Judy Kay White and had two sons: Daniel Oliver and Nathaniel Arthur, four grandchildren and a great-grandson. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Hiram College, Master of Arts from the University of Cincinnati and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He also held the MSLIS degree from Indiana University. Dr. Bard created and taught many courses in his 17 years at
Davis & Elkins College before moving to Elizabethtown College where he served 17 years as professor and head librarian. Throughout his career, Dr. Bard mentored college students, brilliant as well as insecure, often bringing them home for extended stays. The esteem of students joined the respectful camaraderie of fellow professors. His zest for life, creating fun and adventure, his savoring of stories as well as history, his gentle, appreciative acceptance of others, mark him vividly in memory. A memorial service was held Jan. 22 at Donegal Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Phillips Vaughn Brooks Dr. Phillips Vaughn Brooks, 81, of Elkins and Helsinki, Finland, passed away in Helsinki on April 15, 2011. Born at Lewiston, ME, on Aug. 30, 1929, he was the son of the late Phillips C. Brooks and Doris Annis Brooks. His wife of 38 years, Pauline Hillard, died in 1994. Dr. Brooks began his academic career after serving actively with the U.S. Army from 19471956, with final discharge in 1962. A veteran of the Korean conflict, he was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, with 52 jumps to his credit – two in combat. Studies at the University of Kentucky led to a teaching position at Eastern Kentucky University and graduate studies at George Peabody College for Teachers, now part of Vanderbilt University. In 1969, he became assistant professor of English at Davis & Elkins College. He went on to chair the
English department and direct the General Studies and Creative Thinking programs. Dr. Brooks retired from D&E in 1999 with Professor Emeritus status. A five-time Fulbright Scholar during his 30 years at D&E, he also spent five years teaching in Turkey, Syria, and Kazakhstan. In 1980, he taught in the University of Colorado's Semester at Sea program. Dr. Brooks will be remembered for his giftedness as a teacher, his passion for travel and his ability to help students better understand themselves and their place in the world. A resident of Elkins from 1969-2001, he held leadership positions at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and Mountain State Hospice and was a former president and board member of the Westminster Foundation of West Virginia. In 2001, Dr. Brooks moved to Helsinki, where he taught
part-time for the University of Helsinki and the Renvall Institute for North American Studies. A memorial service was held April 30 at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Professor Jesse Reed Professor Emeritus of the Arts Jesse Reed died July 29 in Davis Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was 91. The son of Herman M. and Desta Thomas Reed of Belington, WV, Professor Reed taught for Davis & Elkins College more than 49 years and earned acclaim as an artist
with exhibitions in galleries around the country. After graduating from Belington High School, Reed studied art in New York, NY, at the Grand Central School of Art and the Art Students’ League. He held the Bachelor’s degree from Davis & Elkins College, Master’s degree from West Virginia University, and the honorary Master of Humane Letters from D&E. He also was a veteran of World War II, having received the Bronze Star for Service in the North Apennines Campaign. Professor Reed’s work was exhibited in hundreds of museums, galleries, and libraries from coast to coast, beginning in 1947 - including the Boston Museum, the Library of Congress, Brooklyn Museum and the Seattle Museum. In West Virginia, he is represented in the permanent collections of the Huntington Museum and the Charleston Museum at Sunrise. He received numerous awards throughout his career and was a member of the Salmagudi
Club in New York, the Boston Printmakers, the Print Club of Albany, and a founding member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society. A Romantic Realist in style, his work captured the moods and character of the people and places he knew through travels to Nepal, Kashmire, the Amazon, the Nile, North Africa, the Andes, Australia, Iceland, Greenland, Finland, Norway, Southern Africa and the South Pacific Islands. Professor Reed is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, former D&E Registrar Elizabeth May Millar Reed, as well as their son, David, a brother and four nephews. Final rites were conducted at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church on August 2.
