2008–2009 Annual Report

“D&E is indeed a most remarkable place.” Some days – even now during midsummer – I find myself wishing you were sitting in the other green chair in The President's Room here in Halliehurst. Today was one of them. The day began with an early morning word from one of our Trustees who purchased for us on eBay a perfectlypreserved essay on Senator Elkins and Halliehurst (including photos and three sketches of the interior) from the March 1895 issue of Munsey's Magazine. (Munsey's was the world's first masscirculation magazine (700,000), designed as “a magazine of the people and for the people, with pictures and art and good cheer and human interest throughout.”) Writing contemporaneously, the author describes the Senator as “a conspicuous example of the self-made man in America. (Yet) he is more than a money-maker, more than a politician. He is a thinker, a worker. He has the mentality, the nervous force, the physical energy, before which obstacles, or what would be termed obstacles by the ordinary man, vanish as he approaches them.” These are the qualities that brought this marvelous little college into being 105 years ago next month. They are the qualities the Senator would be pleased to see are still at work even today. Of Halliehurst, the author writes simply: It “is one of the finest country houses in the South – perhaps the finest with the exception of George Vanderbilt's home (in Asheville).”

Halliehurst” had reached out and touched one that was breaking. While all this was going on in Liberal Arts Hall, my luncheon guest - the father of one of our students – arrived from Pittsburgh, and we left for Graceland. His follow-up email tonight reflects what we hope and expect is the experience of all our students: “We are certainly excited about our daughter's academic advisor. We have grown to love and respect her as a dedicated professional, and very kind, decent person. She has been such a strong influence in our daughter's academic and personal life at D&E.” We are each one of us threading our own way through this treacherous economy. I wonder how you might have responded to the first appointment of the morning: a single-parent Mom of two boys – one chronically ill – who couldn't register for classes this fall since her private loan company went bankrupt and she's left with an outstanding account with the College. Seeing that she was in a Catch-22 on the eve of her final year in college (the first ever in her family to attend), the D&E Team sprang into action. By the time she left campus an hour later, our Business, Financial Aid and Registrar folks had worked out a Promissory Note to cover her past-due amount; her Federal grant and loan applications for Fall had been filed electronically; she was registered for classes; and hired for a campus job beginning on Monday. The “Heart of

The afternoon and evening continued pretty much as the day began, and in the same spirit of appreciation and anticipation. That's a pretty winning combination. Little wonder that we expect to welcome the largest and most qualified entering class in at least a quarter century. D&E is indeed a most remarkable place. Many thanks for your own part in helping make it so.

National Media Feature D&E Davis & Elkins College has received national, even worldwide, attention this spring. In March, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette broke D&E's story on the Highlands Scholars, which was quickly picked up by newspapers across the country. Carol Schuler, Director of Communications and Marketing, commented that news interest for the unique scholarship program was very high. “We found that we were one of only three or four colleges or universities nationwide which were matching public school tuition at any level,” said Schuler. “The Highlands Scholar program attracted national press, including The New York Times, BusinessWeek.com, and Inside Higher Education.”

Additional national and worldwide attention focused on D&E's Theatre Program and its production of Coal Mountain Elementary. Written by visiting poet Mark Nowak, D&E's production is featured on the PBS Newshour Web site and on the Chicago-based Poetry Foundation Web site. The Foundation publishes Poetry magazine. The Web sites have audio and video clips of footage D&E provided, which was filmed on the D&E Campus by Gerry Milnes, Folk Arts Coordinator and Producer for The Augusta Heritage Center. Thacker Named Provost, Dean of Faculty Davis & Elkins College President G.T. “Buck” Smith has named Dr. Victor Thacker as Provost, Dean of Faculty, and Professor of English and Hospitality Management. Thacker began his new duties July 1. He has been Senior Counsel to President Smith since 2008 and, during the academic year, assumed duties of Executive Director of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Hospitality and Tourism and Director of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness. In his announcement to the campus community, President Smith said, “After exploring various possibilities, and conferring with members of the Faculty and Board of Trustees as well as Staff, it became abundantly clear that Dr. Thacker is the best person to fill this key position. He not only has the necessary academic credentials, but over a distinguished career has demonstrated unusual management and leadership skills as well. “Having overseen the restoration of Graceland and helped establish our Hospitality Management Program 15 years ago, and later serving as D&E Vice President, Dr. Thacker knows the College well. And as Chairman of the Randolph

County Community Arts Center, he is well-known and highly regarded within the campus and larger community.” Thacker, who holds doctoral and master's degrees in English from the University of North Carolina as well as a master's degree in Public Management from Carnegie Mellon University, has taught at several colleges and universities, including Carnegie Mellon, the United States Air Force Academy and West Virginia Wesleyan. He is a noted lecturer on the American Civil War and the editor of the published memoirs of Joseph French Harding, a Confederate soldier from Randolph County. In commenting on his appointment, Dr. Thacker said: “I am honored to be the Provost and Dean of Faculty of Davis & Elkins College. It will be exciting to work with such an outstanding faculty and staff as we help our students prepare for their futures.” Thacker's relationship with Davis & Elkins College began in 1994, when he was invited to oversee the restoration of the Graceland Inn and creation of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Hospitality and Tourism. Following the tremendous

success of that undertaking, Thacker was appointed Acting Vice President for Enrollment Management in 1997. He left D&E in 1998 and spent several years teaching and writing, later becoming Director and Chairman of the Randolph County Community Arts Center. His leadership at RCCAC has helped transform the startup into a vital community resource with a paid staff, a program of nearly 40 performances and exhibitions, classes that serve more than 700 people each year, and an annual operating budget of nearly $250,000. Prior to moving to Elkins in 1994, Dr. Thacker served as Director of International Education at Carnegie Mellon University. He retired with the rank of Colonel from the United States Air Force in 1989, having served for more than 25 years. During his military career, Dr. Thacker was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, three Air Medals, and other honors. In 1984, he was named a Fellow to the American Council on Education, one of 30 people chosen nation-wide to study academic administration.

received a grant from the Appalachian College Association to do that.”

If so, you might wish you were at D&E today. Thanks to a very creative teaching approach, D&E students are finding that learning math and computer science concepts can be fun as well as extremely useful in the real world.

The ACA mini-grant was awarded in May of 2008 and funded through the Mellon Foundation. It was designed to allow colleges to develop their own ideas about quantitative literacy and to share the result with their ACA colleagues. D&E was the only private college in West Virginia to be selected. According to Moudry, the grant provided an opportunity to remedy problems with conventional approaches to teaching math and science.

“We wanted math to be more exciting,” says Dr. Brian Moudry, D&E Professor of Mathematics and Physics. “so we brainstormed on how to make robots the instrument to teach.” Moudry has been team-teaching with Steve Mattingly, assistant professor of computer science, to effectively merge Math 101, “Introduction to Mathematics,” and Computer Science 100-02, “Personal Computing” into a combined course that uses Lego Mind Storm robots to teach concepts for both courses. In short, students use the robots to apply math and computer science concepts. They solve math problems. They program robots. And the robots show them how well they are doing. “Our goal is to promote quantitative literacy to underclassmen enrolled in Math 101 and Personal Computing – two classes that are largely taken by non-math majors,” says Moudry. “We weren't just trying to promote math and computer science. We wanted to develop a means for teaching across the curriculum and we 6 | Davis & Elkins College Forward

“We wanted to create a hands-on learning community,” says Moudry. “We wanted these courses to be more exciting. What we have seen is that the students are engaged. It's one big collective problemsolving experience.” Moudry explains: “Students worked as partners to solve specific problems that we gave them. But they had to use the robot to find the answer. So, we had to determine what we could measure with the robot. For example, slope is related to speed. And speed is related to time and power. Students could program the robots to measure all of these things and convert them through mathematical formulas to arrive at their answers. “At first, the frustration level was through the roof,” Moudry continues. “But then the students realized that good

quantitative literacy is breaking a problem down into smaller pieces and experiencing success. They had to take what they were given – the robot – and make something that solved a problem. We provided guidance but never the answers.” Mattingly called the class an exercise in managing complexity. “The robot has a motion sensor, a light sensor and a sound sensor. All of these can be used to attain measurements. The programming environment for the robots is based on software called Lab View, which allows students to develop unique programs for each operation they want the robot to do.” As students work through the problems, they report back to classmates on how they approached a solution. And reports about the class have been positive. “We presented to the ACA in May,” says Moudry. “I think the other schools were intrigued. We certainly have found this to be a fun approach for our students. Creating the class has been a lot of work, but I'm jazzed up about it. As the need for quantitative literacy increases, everyone can learn from putting creative ideas like this to work.”

D&E Writing Center Helps Writers “Across the Curriculum” by Erin Young, '10, Communications Assistant and Writing Center Tutor

Good written communication skills are essential in every field. From simple memoranda to emails and Web communication, it is increasingly important for all college graduates to know how to write with concision and clarity, prompting Davis & Elkins College to explore an academic approach called Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC). WAC has been employed by many colleges and universities since the 1980s. It stresses writing as an educational tool and written literacy as a fundamental skill necessary to all people from all educational backgrounds. By including writing assignments in all academic disciplines, including math and science, D&E hopes to help students gain the skills they need for later success. One way D&E is implementing WAC is through the newly-reworked College Writing Center. Staffed with student tutors from all academic disciplines, the Writing Center is open five days a week and aims to help students better understand what makes 'good writing,' and how to improve their proficiency. D&E student tutors, whose majors range from English to Theatre, Sociology to Mathematics, team up with academic faculty, who have agreed to include writing in their courses. Dr. Peter Okun, director of the D&E Writing Center, says that the idea for a college writing center came from

within the institution. “We see students arriving with weak writing skills, and they're anxious about it. They know how important writing is to their future. These days, every career demands strong writing skills. We have a rigorous composition program, but research shows that one-onone tutoring is an essential supplement to classroom teaching. Studies show that college students respond well to peer tutors — students just like they are, who happen to be experienced writers who also are trained in advanced composition skills.” Okun says that writing centers are an effective tool for training quality writers simply because they work. “Very few colleges our size are able to make that commitment,” says Okun, “but at D&E we have the kind of personal relationships with students, and among faculty, that an effective Writing Center requires.” According to Okun, some of the most innovative and dynamic writing assignments come from math classes taught by Mathematics, Computer Science, & Physics Department Chair Dr. Sharmistha Roy, whose students are asked to apply qualitative skills to the quantitative principles of Mathematics.

clarity. The goal is to explain mathematics in a logical, step-by-step manner so that it can be understood and followed by the reader.” Tutors in the writing center are trained to know what styles of writing are appropriate to specific disciplines. They are then equipped with a “tool box” to help students coming to the Writing Center with a variety of difficult assignments. Okun says the student tutors “contribute mightily” to the success of the D&E Writing Center, not only by tutoring but also by promoting WAC principles to D&E faculty. Okun conceived the idea to use his tutors as an intermediary between students and their professors. “We've started training peer tutors as faculty liaisons. Our tutors link up with faculty members who have agreed to add a writing component to one of their courses. They help them design and evaluate assignments, and they work with their students in the Writing Center.” The writing center is housed in Jennings Randolph Hall. To learn more, contact Dr. Peter Okun at okunp@davisandelkins.edu.

Jennie Finafrock, a Math major, D&E softball player, and Writing Center Peer Tutor, says many students need help with math writing. “Writing in mathematics is not focused on creativity, but more on Summer 2009 | 7

New Programs

The Naylor Learning Center Davis & Elkins College has a long and distinguished history of helping students with diagnosed learning disabilities to succeed in college and in the careers of their choice. A recent grant from the Naylor Family Trust will provide the resources necessary to greatly expand these services as well as the number of students served. “With this significant gift,” said President Smith, “we are now in a position to greatly enhance the Supported Learning services to our students, to increase access to the Program through scholarships, and to fully integrate the services offered by our Supported Learning and Academic Support Programs. We are immensely grateful to the Naylor Family Trust for this important help. As an expression of our appreciation, these programs as well as the major physical space in Albert Hall dedicated to them will be named The Naylor Learning Center.” Program expansion and enhancement will take place over a three-year period. The initial grant for 2009–2010 is especially timely since enrollment in the Supported Learning Program is expected to increase from the 38 students served last year to 55 this fall. The Academic Support Program will now be able to serve even more students who need help with study skills and time management, and will be expanded to fully serve all students who seek tutoring or other types of academic support.

8 | Davis & Elkins College Forward

Mary Ellen Schubert, Director of The Naylor Learning Center, is enthusiastic about the transformation the gift makes possible. “This grant will open many new doors for our students,” she said. “Expanding the professional staff and increasing the number of student tutors will enable us to better serve our students as enrollment increases. We’ve been able to equip a new learning lab with computers and software that address specific learning disabilities and provide remediation in subject areas where students may be challenged.” President Smith added: “Establishment of The Naylor Learning Center is a powerful affirmation of our mission: to prepare and inspire students for success and meaningful engagement in the world. Our small class sizes, low student to faculty ratio, and rigorous academic program create an ideal learning environment for all students. The Naylor Learning Center will ensure that students have the resources and support to succeed academically, regardless of the special learning challenges they may face.

The Naylor Family Trust The Naylor Family Trust was established by Howard & Audrey Naylor to support charitable organizations whose primary mission is education in the Appalachian region. Howard Naylor, a native of Oakland, Maryland, was a science teacher and businessman. Audrey Naylor, a native of Pleasantville, New York, was a teacher who spent most of her career working with children with special needs. After raising five children in Garrett County, Maryland, the Naylors moved to Boise, Idaho, in 1961, where both pursued their teaching careers, their love of the outdoors, and their lifelong passion for learning.

New Programs Instructor of Environmental Science Russ McClain (shown here with a Galapagos tortoise) has been appointed Director of the Center for Sustainability Studies.

Sustainability Studies Davis & Elkins College will launch a new program in Sustainability Studies, thanks to a grant from the Naylor Family Trust. The three-year grant will fund development of an academic major and minor in Sustainability Studies and a center for community and regional education, research, and outreach. Russ McClain, instructor of environmental science, has been appointed Director of the Center for Sustainability Studies. With widely-respected existing programs in Biology and Environmental Science and an interdisciplinary Green Studies minor, a strong partnership with Sustainable Living West Virginia, and many faculty, staff, and students already engaged in sustainable practices, many of the key components of a Sustainability Studies program are already in place. “Sustainability Studies is a natural extension of the good things we are already doing,” stated President Smith. “This grant will provide the resources needed to transform these key ingredients into a fully integrated program. We are grateful to the Naylor Family Trust for having the vision and the commitment to make this possible."

The major in Sustainability Studies will prepare students to address the needs of the present while ensuring a viable world for future generations, particularly as these challenges affect Appalachia. McClain emphasizes the problem-solving, multidisciplinary approach of the program. “The program will prepare students for positions of leadership in business, government, and non-profit organizations. They may tackle issues of sustainable economic development, like ecotourism and energy independence; maintenance of healthy communities, such as water quality and green space design; and environmental conservation, such as habitat connectivity.” The Center for Sustainability Studies will serve as a resource for students, community leaders, and private citizens to learn about and apply sustainable practices in their everyday lives. The Center will include demonstration projects related to alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, fuel cells, and bio-diesel; green building and retrofitting; and sustainable agriculture. Legendary Coach to Repay Debt Myers, '71, led Davis & Elkins to two NAIA national championships in 1968 and 1970, and national runner up in 1969. He later coached the Miami Toros of the now-defunct North American Soccer League (NASL) before taking the reins of the United States Naval Academy Men's Soccer Program for 28 seasons. coaching, mentoring and teaching young men how to succeed on and off the soccer field. He views his return to Davis & Elkins as an opportunity to repay an old debt. “Davis & Elkins College took a bet on me as a young coach,” said Myers. “They gave me the encouragement and necessary support to win two national titles in four years. It's pay-back time, and I'm thrilled at the chance to return to the college and community to which I owe so much.” Hank Steinbrecher, who played for Myers on the national title team and now serves on the Davis & Elkins Board of Trustees, commented from his office in Chicago: “I have known Greg Myers for more than 40 years. He has served as an inspiration and mentor for countless men, men who have taken their places in National leadership. We at Davis & Elkins College are indeed fortunate to have Dr. Myers return to campus and lead the effort to rejuvenate our Athletic Program. He is a man of the highest integrity.” While at the Naval Academy, Dr. Myers was for 13 years colleague and confidant of Athletic Director Jack Lengyel, former Head Football Coach at Marshall University and inspiration for the Warner Bros. film, “We Are Marshall.” In a telephone interview from his home in Phoenix, Lengyel said of Myers: “Greg is an excellent choice for AD at Davis & Elkins. He has a strong academic background to match that of the school,

is a person with high integrity and great work ethic, and brings a wealth of experience as a teacher, coach and leader. I look forward to following his career as the Athletic Director at Davis & Elkins College.”

West Virginia Star, Martin, Returns Home Joining Myers as Assistant Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball Coach, Bruce Martin, 37, comes to D&E most recently from the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Texas, where he was an assistant coach for the NCAA Division I team since 2007. A graduate of Clemson University with a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Martin has coached for Radford University, Ockelbo Basketball Club, a professional team in Sweden, Clemson, the University of Wyoming and Francis Marion University. In addition to his duties as Head Coach of the Ockelbo team, Martin has also served as an assistant under Byron Samuels, Tom Schuberth and Larry Shyatt. Davis & Elkins Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Wilson noted that Martin will be a good fit for D&E. “He's from West Virginia and was an All-State player during high school,” said Wilson. “He knows the coaching programs in this state and he has a strong background as a player, coach and recruiter for Division I schools. All of his former head coaches recommended him highly.” As Assistant Coach for the University of Texas-Pan American, Martin helped his team achieve the NCAA Division I Independent basketball's best season record. He was actively involved in recruiting, individual player development, video analysis, budgeting, academics, admissions and financial aid.

athletics his senior year. A shooting guard, he was a three-time National Invitational Tournament player and was third in the ACC for three-point field goal percentage (44.4%) and fifth for three-point field goals per game (2.3). A graduate of West Virginia's Shady Spring High School, Martin is the school's all-time leading scorer and was the state scoring champion in 1989. He was twice named to the West Virginia All-State First Team. While serving as Assistant Athletic Director for Clemson basketball operations with Head Coach Shyatt from 2000 to 2003, Clemson defeated then #1-ranked North Carolina, ending UNC's 18-game winning streak in 2001. Martin played for Clemson as a student from 1990-95 and was Team Captain

Myers replaces Stollsteimer as men's soccer coach By Jason Asbell, Head Women's Basketball Coach and Sports Information Director Dr. Greg Myers has agreed to serve also as head men's soccer coach replacing Mark Stollsteimer who recently resigned to assume the same role at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. When asked about taking charge of the Senator soccer program again Dr. Myers stated, “It will be fun to get back into the game and you never really lose the fire for coaching.”

Stollsteimer leaves D&E after being involved with the program for 14 years. In 2007 he led the Senators to a 17-5 record and the WVIAC regular season championship, and he was named the WVIAC Coach of the Year. In 2008, the Senators spent five weeks nationally ranked in the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Top 25 poll reaching # 10 in week five of the season. Under Stollsteimer's leadership, D&E produced one All-American, 11 AllRegion selections and 23 All-Conference performers. He also had 21 players earn Academic All-Conference Honors. “I would like to thank all those who have supported me and the men's soccer team through my tenure,” said Stollsteimer. “I'm proud to be leaving the program in such a strong state and in the hands of such a great coach with Dr. Myers. My family and I are saddened to be leaving the Elkins community, but are looking forward to our new venture at Millikin University.” The 2009 Senators open the season August 28 against Holy Family University.

Former D&E pitcher Tobi Stoner was recently called up to the Buffalo (NY) Bisons, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, meaning he is just one step away from being a part of Major League Baseball. Stoner started the season with Class A Advanced St. Lucie and pitched at least six innings in each of his last seven Florida State League starts. Last summer he was promoted to Double-A Binghamton where he won four straight starts from July 21-August 5. Stoner also went 2-0 with a 3.66 ERA in 11 relief appearances with the Peoria Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League. Stoner was selected during his final year at D&E by the New York Mets in the 16th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft and is considered the 19th best prospect in the organization by Baseball America.

Athletic Program Award winners included, left to right: Daniel Kwafo, Zach McElroy, Bre Tognoli, Jennie Finafrock, Teonna Jewell, Cole Dant, and Josh Lopez.

alumni news New Scholarship Available for Students

Help further a D&E Student's Career

With literally hundreds of colleges and universities to choose from in a given region, why would a student choose Davis & Elkins College? No one is better equipped to answer that question than an alumnus or alumna who experienced a D&E education first-hand. A beautiful campus in one of the country's most scenic areas, small class sizes and close relationships with faculty members, quality liberal arts curriculum with distinctive professional and pre-professional programs, abundant opportunities to lead and to be of service to others, and many other characteristics make Davis & Elkins College a place where students find inspiration and solid preparation for their futures.

It's a scary time to be looking for a job — and to be planning for a future career. Now imagine being a member of the D&E Class of 2009, or one of the D&E students currently considering future career directions. Fortunately these Senators, like all D&E alumni, have an advantage that many others don't: access to the active and diverse D&E network.

Referred by a D&E Alumnus

That is why the Admission Office is asking for your help, and has established a new scholarship to recognize the special role that you might play in encouraging a friend or family member to consider enrolling at Davis & Elkins College. Every student who is first referred by an alumnus, and chooses to enroll at D&E, will receive a $500 scholarship in the name of the alumnus/a who made the referral. Not only will you be encouraging a student to consider the college that meant so much to you, but you will be providing a significant financial benefit to the student as well. For further information or to refer a prospective student, contact Becky Pauls in the Admission Office at paulsr@davisandelkins.edu or (304) 614-3127. Be sure to provide your name and class year as well as the name and contact information for the student you are referring. If you prefer, give this information to your student, and encourage him or her to inform the College that you have provided this referral. The scholarship is awarded only to those students whose first contact with Davis & Elkins College is through the alumni referral. By sharing your experience of and appreciation for Davis & Elkins College, you can become a vital member of the Admission team. Your support will be appreciated!

President Buck Smith hosts D&E Event in Charlotte Nearly thirty alumni, parents, and friends gathered for a reception and tour of the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte, NC, in April. Participants, pictured on the stairs in the main lobby, were Bailey Barnett, Julie Beauchamp, John & Suzanne Carlson, Wendell and Judie Cramer, Drake Dowler, Betty & Richard Hechenbleichner, Helen Kaufman, Karin Infuso and Paul Ninesling, Tony Mumblow & Donne Fitzgerald, Doug & Claudia Oldenburg, Tracy & Cooper Roberts, and Paul & Karen Stirrup. 16 | Davis & Elkins College Forward

To help mobilize that network, the Office of Student Employment and Career Services has launched a new D&E career networking site on the popular LinkedIn professional networking platform. Students seeking internships, jobs, or advice about possible career direction, will be posting their profiles and their questions. Alumni and parents who have advice, opportunities, or networking referrals to offer, are invited to join. Your help is critical given the current economic environment and the challenges our students and young graduates face in their job searches. Do you know of opportunities for internships during summer or Winter Term? Do you have tips for a young graduate seeking work in your profession? We believe that when D&E students can connect with the broader D&E community, meaningful connections and opportunities will arise. Please help us launch this program by going to LinkedIn. com and joining the Senators Connection Group. If you are not already a LinkedIn member, you will need to set up your personal profile first. News from Your National Alumni Council

Tonight upon coming home from a business trip, I received an email from an alumnus of the College who had attended some 25 years ago and had received a letter from me on behalf of the Alumni Council. There had been virtually no contact with the Council over this period and this recent letter helped to prompt a heartfelt interest in reconnecting. I am constantly amazed at how far reaching and important our ties to our Alma Mater remain, whether we nurture that relationship over a lifetime, or whether we return years later after an extended period without contact. For one group of alumni, the focus on D&E is truly a year-round activity. This group is your National Alumni Council and our efforts center upon strengthening the relationships between the College and its alumni. Let me share what your Council has been undertaking since our update in the Forward last summer… »»

Met with President “Buck” Smith and the leadership of the Board of Trustees to explore ways that alumni can be a more vital force in supporting the College

This year has truly been a remarkable one from the vantage point of the Alumni Council and alumni who have been actively engaged in the life of the College because of the significant changes that have been taking place. Whether it be the appearance of the campus, the upgrading of the technology infrastructure, new fitness center, regular email communication from the President, a significantly larger entering student class, significant growth of financial gifts, or recognition in regional and national press, the direction has been one of strategic change to position D&E for renewed strength and enhanced commitment to its mission. These changes stand out as even more remarkable given the significant pressures felt by all institutions of higher education in the context of our stressed

regional and national economies. As alumni, we are part of D&E's history, and we have a vested interest in its present and its future. The key question is how is our support reflected? Often, alums expect the answer to be a request for financial support. Financial support is important but so are many other forms of support that only require your thoughts and a commitment to action. For example, today's college student benefits from a direct work experience or internship prior to graduation. Perhaps your company or organization can offer an internship to one of D&E's current students. Your company or organization may also need a full time employee; you can make these opportunities known by posting them on the Career Center's new LinkedIn Site. Perhaps you know a high school student or parents of one who is in the process of exploring college options. Davis & Elkins College may or may not be within their initial awareness of college options, but it could be if you suggested its consideration or just passed their name along to the College's admissions office. You certainly know alumni who may be outstanding candidates for one of the College's various alumni awards. Pick up the phone or send an email with their name. Nominate an alumnus or yourself for service on your National Alumni Council! Share the many positive stories and changes about D&E with other alums that you stay in touch with but who may not be in regular contact with the College. Attend a regional alumni event or reserve your place at Homecoming this October. These are but a few additional ways to support your Alma Mater at little or no cost — and to make a positive difference in the life of the College or one of its deserving students. It has been a busy year for your National Alumni Council. Scan the list of our members and you should recognize some names. Pick up the phone or send an email to any one of us with a suggestion for how we can better serve you and the College, offer a nomination for an alumni award, share your willingness to volunteer for service on the NAC or just say hello! We look forward to your contact and any chance to visit at Homecoming or throughout the year!

Michel P. and Lucylle Chambers Debaets, Hilton Head Island, SC, consider themselves blessed to have celebrated their mid-80 birthdays and their 61+ years of married life in 2008. They were married on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1947, at St. Brendans Catholic Church in Elkins. Lucylle majored in English and Business, and Michel graduated Magna Cum Laude with a major in Engineering, and they graduated as Mr. and Mrs. Debaets. Michel and Lucylle remember that Davis & Elkins College was really different in the post World War II days. Most male war veterans were in their mid-twenties and serious students who presented a challenge to the faculty. The faculty, Dr. Albert, Dean Talbot, B. Barnes, Dr. Miller, Dr. Gloria Marquette Payne, Prof. Audenour, Dr. Urhlicht, and many others, were great academics but also helped the veterans shape their lives for the future. The faculty was unanimous in stating that, in this period, the academic standards and expectations were elevated to the limit. The small town of Elkins and the warmth and friendliness of the people provided the perfect setting for an ideal college experience. The Debaets have been retired for 22 years. They are in “tolerable” health and still live in Hilton Head, South Carolina. They write, “D&E gave us the foundation for a blessed Christian and successful life together,” and go on further to say to present day students, “You could not have selected a better place of learning and total development than Davis & Elkins College.”

Theresa Gainer Martin, Salem, OH, spent 40 years, after graduating from D&E, teaching in West Virginia and Ohio. Theresa and her husband, Lloyd, had four children. In 2001, she lost her husband and their son, Lloyd.

1954 Louisa Sager Yeuell, Richmond, VA, received the 28th Lifetime Achievement Award from The Ecumenical Resource Center for leadership in the ministry of Christian Education. On April 20, 2009, she was blessed with a greatgranddaughter, Sophie Paris-Lopez, who was born to Louisa's granddaughter, Lindsey Paris-Lopez, and her husband, Alex Lopez. Arthur S. “Art” Hirshey's recent visit to campus during Homecoming weekend was an eye-opener and all positive. His wife's initial comment, “What a beautiful place.” The Hirsheys reside in Merrick, NY.

1957 Joanne C. Dougherty Vaughan, Dallas, TX, is excited about D&E's new president and his plans for 2009.

their three daughters now have jobs in upstate New York and both live within 15 minutes drive of Mary and Ed in Oneonta, NY, much to their delight. They also travel frequently to New Jersey to see their 12-year-old grandson. Mary and Ed are both retired from counseling and teaching, respectively, but find plenty to do. Ed does research and writing, and Mary is finally finding time to audit courses in her college major (and her first love), Literature. Some time ago, Mary connected with her D&E College friend Ruth Herbert Gnagey, '59, who had become a Unitarian Universalist minister, and she officiated at the ceremony of Mary and Ed's daughter - a wonderful gift and reunion. Although Mary missed her 50th class reunion, she is sure they will find another time to revisit the wonderful hills and “mountain magic” with all the memories of D&E that they carry with them.

1958 Frank M. Mele and his wife, June, recently returned to the Township of Washington, NJ, from a wonderful threeweek trip to Africa. Their trip began in Cape Town, South Africa, and ended in Cairo, Egypt. They visited Kenya and the Sahara Desert, took a four-day trip down the Nile River, saw King Tut's Tomb and the Pyramids, and took a one-week safari where they saw “the big 5,” cheetahs, lions, water buffalo, elephants, and rhinoceros. Mary Willis Ambrose and her husband, Ed, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September 2008 at a gathering of family and friends. Two of

They also offer classic Mediterranean olive trees through their website, www.hrvn.net. See 1963.

1961 George P. Morgan Jr. and his wife, Sheri, are enjoying life in Coronado, CA. Recent visits to the campus have been great opportunities to bond with old friends and observe changes on campus.

1963 July 2008 marked Barbara Frank Warren's retirement from teaching and travelling overseas as a reading specialist with the Department of Defense. She and her husband, Roger, are discovering day-by-day their “new” life, and settling back into their Woodsville, NH, home. Being geographically closer to family and becoming involved with their most active and congenial Senior Center is at the top of their new gratitude list. Joe Harris's children, Jody Harris and Gingy Harris Gable, are the owners and operators of “Harris Ranch Napa Valley” in Napa Valley, CA. Their Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil was recently chosen as the winner of the Wine County Inn's Olive Oil Taste-Off. The event was judged by Jim Smith, the innkeeper of the Wine County Inn, Chef Lars Kronmark of the Culinary Institute of America, and Diane De Filipe, an expert on Italian cooking and olive oils, through her tour company “Let's Go Cook Italian.” Joe reports they now offer classic Mediterranean olive trees: Frantoio, Leccino and Coratina through their website, www.hrnv.net, and that Jody and Gingy, Harris Ranch Napa Valley, have recently partnered with Foodoro. com. Foodoro.com is a marketplace of independent food artisans and showcases an amazing array of handcrafted foods; from baked goods, to jams, to chocolates, all small batch and high quality, just like HRNV. Spring R. Jones, Flemington, NJ, works for the State of New Jersey as Trust Director for the Office of the Public Guardian.

1991 In July 2006, Kathleen N. “Kathy” Masterson, '91, was appointed Athletic Director of Westhampton Beach High School, NY, after teaching physical education at Westhampton Beach for seven years. While she was teaching, Kathy began a field hockey program

through the after school intramural program, always hoping to resurrect the field hockey program which had been discontinued in the mid 1990s. Since her appointment to Athletic Director, plans have been put in the works to start a field hockey program, beginning with middle school and junior varsity programs. As the programs progress, develop and become competitive, a varsity team will eventually be added.

1992 Melanie Butcher Crowder was the first family member in her generation to attend college and had two sisters follow in her footsteps in obtaining college degrees. She remembers her first day of Intro to English - the professor put a piece of driftwood on his desk and asked the class to take out paper and explain what it was. Melanie wrote, “a piece of driftwood” and turned it in. She passed the class with a “C”, but by the time she took Advanced Literature she could definitely write something about driftwood, thanks to that professor. Melanie reports one of the many wonderful things about D&E was the people. She states that never before and not since D&E has she ever encountered such a group of free thinking and intelligent individuals. Today, Melanie is in Valdosta, GA, raising her daughters: the oldest is an education major at VSU in GA and the youngest plans to major in design.

26 | Davis & Elkins College Annual Report

Every effort has been made to present a clear and accurate report of those who have given of themselves for the betterment of the College. Occasionally, however, mistakes and omission occur. If you have questions regarding this report, please feel free to contact us so that we may correct our records. The gifts contained in this report reflect contributions that were made to Davis & Elkins College between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. You may direct your question or concerns to Karen L. Wilmoth, Director of Advancement Operations and Stewardship, Davis & Elkins College, 100 Campus Dr., Elkins, West Virginia 26241, (304) 637-1374, wilmothk@davisandelkins.edu.

President’s Statement of Condition To the Stakeholders of Davis Elkins College: irst off, I thank you for being a “stakeholder” – defined as “a person with an interest or share in an enterprise.” This implies an investment, an abiding care, a concern for something of value. And a responsibility on me to be held accountable, to report progress regularly, and to present you, from time to time, with a Statement of Condition. So, here it is for the year July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009: This has been an extraordinary year in the life of our College. In some ways measurable. In some ways not. In many ways pivotal. In every way important. On July 1 a year ago, we laid out a game plan for the year ahead, focusing on six priorities, all beginning with the letter “R”: »» Reduce Expenses.

»» Raise Funds.

»» Recruit Students.

»» Renew Programs.

»» Retain Students.

»» Reach for New Opportunities.

Reduce Expenses Thanks to the earlier and courageous initiatives of President Tom Mann and the Board of Trustees, roughly $1.2 million – about 10% of the annual budget – had been cut from operations. As a result, the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, closed with a modest surplus of $20,261. Even so, we were facing a potential deficit for 2008-09 in excess of $2 million on an expense budget of $9,814,115.

e ended the year with a cash surplus; and we repaid the $500,000 to the endowment.

In the opening weeks of the new fiscal year, we were able to reduce expenses by another roughly $700,000. Closing the remaining projected shortfall fell to the Revenue side of the ledger. And that was dependent on increased student revenues and substantially increased gifts from you, our trustees, alumni and friends. Year-end, pre-audit figures indicate that, together, we managed to fulfill the three objectives laid out by Paul Stirrup, Chair of the Board of Trustees: 1. Operate with a balanced budget. 2. Manage cash so as to avoid having to borrow from the internal line of credit. 3. Repay up to $500,000 owed to the endowment from previous years. As it turns out, based on preliminary figures, we operated with a surplus in excess of $300,000; rather than having to draw on the line of credit, we ended the year with a cash surplus; and we repaid the full $500,000 to the endowment. All in all, it was a highly successful year financially. Recruit Students Fortunately, a revitalized and tightly focused Admission Team had been put in place prior to July by newly-appointed Vice President Kevin Wilson. When he reported for duty on March 24, 2008, only 27 new full-time students had deposited for the class entering in September. By the June Board of Trustees meeting, the number had increased to 131. Still, the best we could reasonably hope for was 180. As it turned out, the final count was 207, equal to the highest number of entering students in more than 10 years, and 15% higher than projected. There was at last a glimmer of hope that the decades-long enrollment decline might be broken.

he season for students to apply to college is nearly over, but already we have more than 1400 applications, compared to the 577 total last year.

As soon as the 2008 entering class was in place, “Kevin’s Team” moved into high gear for 2009. Meeting high school students and their families at 341 college fairs (compared to 78 the previous year), and responding personally to every inquiry within 24 hours, applications for admission began to outstrip any previous year. The season for students to apply to college is nearly over, but already we have more than 1400 applications, compared to the 577 total last year. As a result, we’ve been able to be more selective: 63% of this year’s entering freshmen earned a high school GPA of 3.0 or better (compared to 42% last year). The important number of course is the total who deposit, and eventually enroll. We’ll not have a final tally until early September. Even so, with deposits already exceeding 300, a 45% increase over last year’s final figure, we clearly will have the largest entering class in at least 25 years.

Retain Students It’s one thing to recruit well. What really matters is to fulfill expectations. This is where we must now outperform, even in an age when fewer than 10% of adults with bachelor’s degrees received them within four years to every student centers with of graduating from high school. The personal attention we give to every the faculty. student centers with the faculty. And in the classroom. But it hopefully continues throughout every dimension of a student’s experience – whether meeting special dietary needs by the Dining Service, responding to requests promptly and with reasonable accommodation, knowing each student by name, or simply always greeting one another with a smile or friendly hello. In these – and many other ways – D&E seems to earn its four-word descriptor: “It’s like a family.” he personal attention we give

In a telephone interview some weeks ago with an out-of-state reporter, the question was posed: “What’s the secret to the public perception of the College’s high-energy, “can do” spirit?” I responded, “Well, you know D&E is short for ‘Davis and Elkins.’ It also stands for ‘Discovering’ possibilities, and ‘Empowering’ people. That’s the secret.” When students are valued as individuals, when they are encouraged to explore unknown horizons, when they are free to pursue their dreams – they want to stick around. Little wonder that the attrition rate was nearly cut in half this past year. Raise Funds A total of $405,994 was received in operating gifts in Fiscal 2008. As noted above, a balanced budget in 2009 required that we raise at least four times that much in the year just ended. This was a daunting task. But we had no choice. Then a miracle happened. Three anonymous friends – none of whom had attended the College – offered to contribute up to $2.25 million over three years if the College’s alumni and other friends will give $4.5 million during the three-year period ending June 30, 2011. With this 50% matching incentive – termed The New Dawn Challenge - folks again had hope, and began to believe in the possibilities of the future. One of the first gifts following announcement of the Challenge was for $2,000 to The D&E Fund (formerly the Annual Fund) from a great-granddaughter of Senator Henry Gassaway Davis, one of the founders of the College. Others followed suit, with unrestricted gifts ranging from $25 to $25,000. Then at 2:35 New Year’s Eve afternoon, one of the most thoughtful and generous friends any college ever had called on my cell phone during a blinding snow storm while I was having a bowl of chili at Scotty’s, downtown. He wanted to help meet the Challenge, and needed instructions for transferring $225,000 in stock that afternoon. Before the call ended, he offered to send an additional $100,000 by check. I had never experienced such spontaneous generosity. But then, of course, when the cause is right, anything is possible. I knew at that moment God’s Grace was at work in ways we could never anticipate, and we had nothing to fear for the College’s future. We now have the final accounting for private gifts received through June 30: $3,746,100. Of this, $2,345,321 qualified for matching by our anonymous donors. In one year, we’re more than half-way to the three-year $4.5 million matching requirement. And most importantly, we met the operating budget need for unrestricted gifts with a total of $1,875,876 (4½ times the previous year!). Those of you who comprise the 1,467 donors who made all this possible are listed – with gratitude – on the pages that follow. Renew Programs Even as the economy and we as a people endured the darkest financial period in more than 70 years, and programs at institutions of higher learning everywhere atrophied, we focused on a strategic renewal in areas ranging from Athletics and Art to the Writing Center and Wellness program. Other areas of enhancement included Student Life, Maintenance and Housekeeping, Graceland, the Nursing and Hospitality Management programs, Religion and Philosophy. The list goes on, reflecting our commitment to build upon the College’s already existing strengths and people. Reach for New Opportunities Rather than waiting for the future to unfold, we moved aggressively to go meet it. Even before the new year began on July 1, we invested heavily in technology by increasing internet bandwidth seven-fold, making every indoor and outdoor space on campus wireless, annually replacing one-fourth of the computers on campus. Rather than settling for a traditional vertical or “silo” structure, we implemented a horizontal integration of various programs within the College. Folks who used to operate in isolation now work cooperatively in various “Centers,” most notably the Augusta

28 | Davis & Elkins College Annual Report

Heritage Center, the Center for Spirituality, Ethics and Global Awareness, The Robert C. Byrd Center for Hospitality and Tourism, The Naylor Learning Center, and the latest, the Center for Sustainability Studies. This “Reach for New Opportunities” is nowhere more evident than in our institution-wide emphasis on preparing students for global citizenship. From offering five new languages (Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi and Bengali, in addition to Spanish), to expanded study abroad opportunities, to alliances with universities in Poland, Denmark, Israel, Egypt and India, we’re preparing our students for a world that is indeed increasingly “flat.” Back home, our probably largest single new venture is a deliberate outreach to the citizens of Elkins, Randolph County and the surrounding region. As an investment in them and their future we launched the Highlands Scholar program whereby any qualified high school senior can attend D&E at a tuition charge no greater than West Virginia University. It is having a huge potential impact. For example, last year 16 students came to D&E from the 10 high schools in the seven surrounding counties. This year: 79, representing a discounted tuition value of $1,161,000. The other major local initiative is more immediate. Thanks to the vision and generosity of Trustee June Myles and the Myles Family Foundation, we were gifted the Elkins Tire Company property at the intersection of Randolph Avenue and Sycamore Street. Once all the buildings are removed and an attractively landscaped green space created, the campus will be contiguous with the City, with extensive frontage along the main thoroughfare in Elkins.

e’re preparing our students for a world that is indeed increasingly ‘flat’.

Probably the most pervasive “New Opportunity” was the year-long development of a revised Mission Statement to guide the future of the entire enterprise. Beginning initially as the foundational step of the re-accreditation process, it soon evolved into a thoughtful exploration of what we are about by the entire campus community. That the year concluded with the Faculty, Administration and Board of Trustees all unanimously adopting the succinct yet all-encompassing 14-word statement of purpose – “to prepare and inspire students for success and for thoughtful engagement in the world” - is reflective of the high promise of the College’s future. In Closing As I left Halliehurst earlier this evening, a quartet – violin, flute, banjo and troubadour harp – was playing Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major, creating a blend of sound and harmony unlike anything I had ever heard. Off to the west, the sun was setting over Historic Graceland with a brilliance and reflected beauty unlike anything I had ever seen. Then, following along on the curving flagstone walk leading to the Madden Center, I came upon the aging stone tablet placed there by the Class of 1946 with the lyrics of the Psalmist inscribed: “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.” I was reminded anew that this faithful acknowledgement – even after several millennia – continues even today as our own source of progress, and of life itself. At such times, and in the presence of such lifting of the soul, one discovers again what a treasured place this is – this little College birthed after many years of struggle, nurtured for 105 years by persons of unfettered faith and vision and now, on the threshold of unlimited possibility. How privileged each of us is to call her our own. Thank you for your own part in seeing her through to this fine day and the results of this year. And more than that, thank you for your sustaining and constant care as we move forward into what promises to be an even brighter day ahead. Warm regards,

G. T. “Buck” Smith President

Team of 20 During 2008-2009, Davis & Elkins College discontinued the Class Agent program as it had been in place for many years, with the goal of introducing a new, more flexible program that addresses the diverse needs, interests, and communication preferences of our alumni. The “Team of Twenty,” captained by Dr. Ronald A. Rollins, Sr., '57, has been organized to reach out to alumni from the Classes of 1969 and earlier. A program for younger classes has not yet been formalized, but a number of Class Representatives have already volunteered to serve.
