MEET THE TEAM

Clockwise from top left: Stephen Soo teaching beginner Tai Chi at the ARC; Sigrid Kuxdorf with her Fitpac class at WING 404

MEET TEAM #ACTIVEWATERLOO Get to know our instructors – their energy, friendly smiles and quality instruction are the reasons people love our classes. SIGRID KUXDORF FITPAC/LOW IMPACT I have been teaching fitness to older active adults for 20 years. Helping older adults with their fitness so they can enjoy a better quality of life is my passion. It’s a great idea to try out several different activities in a group setting. You’ll see people having fun working out to rhythmic music and you’ll discover the importance of the social aspect of fitness. My students will learn better balance techniques; they’ll improve flexibility and attain core and muscle strength with weight bearing exercises. The cardio part of the class increases the heart rate and improves blood circulation. It really is a fun, full body workout.

When I’m not teaching I enjoy my time at the cottage. I love classical music, singing, going to concerts and dance performances, movies and sports activities. I also enjoy spending time with my grandchildren. 8

STEPHEN SOO TAI CHI I strongly believe Tai Chi is beneficial for our body if we practice it on a regular basis. I have been teaching Tai Chi for 40 years and I know that it’s even better if we incorporate its theory into our daily life activities. It’s important to try different things to challenge yourself. Your body will tell you what suits you best. Tai Chi is a great way for participants to learn and respect the rules of Yin and Yang, the two opposites, and nature. The goal is to make them balance. Visitors to the class will see our routine practice and are welcome to try it out anytime. I have a famous quote by the Tai Chi Grand Master that I like to share, “While the way to Tai Chi begins with the teachings of a mentor, the mastery of the art comes from enduring self-practice.”

My favourite things to do include spending time with family, meditation, trail/road running, hiking and any kind of outdoor activity that brings me closer to nature.

SWIM

GENERAL INFORMATION

SWIM LESSONS

Let’s get started! The most important step is to make sure your child is placed in the right swim level. Staff reserves the right to ask a child be moved to a different level if the class is too challenging, so it’s best to get it right.

If you’re uncertain what level your child should be in, and/or the child has been out of lessons for more than a year, call the Swimplex at 519-886-1177 to arrange a free swim level evaluation. Or follow the recommendations from the child’s last progress report card, and review the detailed standards of performance for each level (online at waterloo.ca/swim/swimlevels). Requests for specific instructors are considered, but we are unable to guarantee that all requests can be granted. Registrations are accepted up to the start of the fifth lesson.

Making the most of your swim experience Leave your valuables at home and bring a lock to secure your belongings. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Shower with soap and water before your swim lesson. Footwear is not permitted on the pool deck. Be prepared to go barefoot, or purchase reusable shoe covers at the customer service desk for 75¢. Children who are not fully toilet trained must wear watertight elastic pants or specially designed

disposable swimming diapers, available at the customer service desk for $2.00. Do not send a child to lessons if they are not feeling well. Pool fouling affects all lessons. If a pool fouling happens, lessons are conducted on the pool deck instead of in the water. Refunds/credits are not given for pool foulings. If your child requires one-on-one support in our group lessons, please call the inclusion coordinator up to 3 weeks in advance, at 519-741-2200 ext. 7228. Volunteers are subject to availability.

What to expect Swimmers should go to the pool deck at the lesson start time and not earlier. Parents can escort their child on the first day to meet the instructor. Afterwards, spectators can watch swimmers from the second floor observation gallery.

Photography or videotaping is only permitted on the last day of lessons, subject to advance staff approval. The use of cell phones and PDAs is strictly prohibited in City of Waterloo recreation facility change rooms, washrooms, pool decks and gallery.

One parent is asked to meet the instructor on deck during the last 10 minutes of the sixth lesson to receive a verbal progress report.

In the event of bad weather, listen to local radio stations in case the program has been cancelled unexpectedly. We are unable to make up lessons cancelled due to emergency closures, but will credit the value of the missed class.

A written progress report is provided at the last lesson and will identify the next recommended swim level. Badges may be purchased at the customer service desk for all Waterloo Splash and Preschool levels.

TYKES 2 (4 -6Y)

Is your child 4 to 6 years old and not quite ready to attend lessons on his/her own? In this transitional program, the parent accompanies the child in the water for the first 5 lessons for advanced Aqua Tot instruction. For the last 4-6 lessons, depending on the session, the child attends without the parent. The instructor and parent carefully monitor the transition to ensure a positive swim experience for everyone. Both parents are welcome to participate. The difference between Tykes 1 and Tykes 2 is age only. (Max. 4

HELP REDUCE POOL CLOSURES A pool fouling will cause a closure of our pools anywhere from 1-24 hours. Here are some healthy habits you can take to stop the spread of germs and reduce the number of closures in our pools: •

Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear “I have to go” may be too late.

The use of a swim diaper is mandatory to enter the pool if a child is not yet fully toilet trained.

Do not swim if you are feeling sick or have been sick in the past 24 hours. This is especially important for children in diapers.

Wash your body thoroughly with soap and water before swimming.

Thank you for your assistance in keeping our pool clean for all to enjoy. 41

Salt impacts our water.

CURB THE

SALT We all have a role to play.

The Region of Waterloo is committed to protecting our water. We are working to reduce salt use on roads and on properties through innovative solutions and partnerships.

Here’s what YOU can do... Shovel sooner than later. Clear the white stuff as soon as you can so a snowy sidewalk doesn’t become an icy one. Instead of salt, let the sun do the melting for you.

Use salt wisely. Only use salt on icy areas and give it time to work. A little goes a long way and salt works best between 0°C and -10°C.

Use salt alternatives. Use alternatives like sand or non-clumping kitty litter to create traction instead of salt.

Wear winter boots. Wear a pair of winter boots with good tread to keep you safe and warm. We can’t always expect bare pavement.
