The City of Union City feels that it is important for all of the youth in our community to have the opportunity to experience the various recreational programs that are offered by the Leisure Services Department. The S.O.K. Scholarship Fund offers a limited number of special scholarships for Union City youth 18 years and under who wish to experience a Leisure Services program but are unable to, due to financial hardship. Scholarships provide 50-75 % of the registration fee, up to a maximum of $200. Scholarships are limited to one program per youth, per year as long as funds are available and families meet the financial qualifications. For more information and a scholarship application, please call the Holly Community Center at 675-5488 or the Kennedy Community Center at 675-5357. We also would like to encourage the members of our community to help support the S.O.K. Scholarship program by making contributions with their Leisure Services registrations. Donations can be added on the Leisure Services registration form. Every dollar counts and is appreciated.

All food scraps can be composted • Fruits, vegetables, breads, cereal • Meat, fish, and bones • Table scraps, dairy products • Coffee grounds, filters and tea bags • Food-soiled paper such as paper towels/plates/ napkins/pizza boxes, wooden chopsticks

Congratulations to this summer’s Leaders in Training (L.I.T.). This program is designed to train youths to be successful recreation leaders. The L.I.T.s were assigned to a Union City Leisure Services Camp or Park and Playground site. They went through a one week intensive training and then worked closely with leaders to put their training to use in the supervision and leading of activities with campers. Their hard work and dedication made a huge impact in the lives of the campers, leaders and with each other. The growth they showed this summer has far exceeded all expectations by leaps and bounds. Congratulations and thank you to this summer’s Leaders in Training.

What Happens When You Call 911? When a 911 call comes into the Union City Police Department (UCPD), the dispatcher answering the phone will ask questions that include who, what, where, when, location last seen, injuries, descriptions, and directions of flight. The dispatchers are also interested if there is alcohol, drugs, and weapons involved in the emergency. While the initial dispatcher is asking these questions, there is another dispatcher who is sending police officers to the emergency. These questions help UCPD render assistance and apprehend criminals. The responding police officers receive updates, based on your answers, as they drive to the location.

October 27, 2012 marks “Make a Difference Day,” a national event dedicated to volunteer service. Created in 1992, it has become the single largest community service effort in the United States, rallying about three million Americans last year. The City of Union City has participated in Make a Difference Day since 1995, bringing City staff and the community together to make improvements such as planting trees, removing graffiti, and installing playground equipment. Last year, Union City held four events: a clean water environmental project, landscape improvements, a painting project and garden care. In an age where information is available to citizens at all hours of the day, cities have worked hard to provide technology to allow people to access data about their own communities. Union City is at the forefront of such efforts, having in 2010 adopted Digital Map Products (DMP)’s CityGISTM and CommunityViewTM software products to enable the efficient transfer of geographic information to anyone. For the public, Community View, an interactive mapping website, was launched to provide details on properties, City services, and local features. Additionally, it provides a hands-on view of the entire

CityGISTM is a cost-effective solution for the City to share information across internal departments, a notably difficult task, since it typically requires the hiring of additional technical staff and a considerable financial investment. With the help of DMP’s software-as-aservice solution, the City of Union City avoided these issues, and the results are promising — an increased awareness of the community and easier access and sharing of useful information. Teen, Men & Women Self-Defense Program Ages 14-Up

It doesn’t matter if you’re older or younger, in shape or out of shape, have old injuries or limitations or think you can or you can’t, this program is for everyone! Come in and learn the first, original mixed martial art! Our philosophy: everyone has limitations, so find out what they are and work around them! You will start off by focusing on increasing your health, physically and internally, while doing it at your own pace. You will learn how to bring your mind and body together as one for inner peace and to help deal with the stress of everyday life whether it’s work, home or school life. You will learn how to defend yourself verbally, mentally and physically in a non-combative environment. Most of all, you will start to feel good about yourself and good about everything around you. Because this mixed martial art is a combination of several arts, you can tailor it to fit your abilities, limitations, wants and needs. If you ever wanted to try martial arts, learn self-defense or increase your physical fitness, this program is for you! At the end of the program, students will be certified and earn their first belt rank pending attendance. Code Day 50838 M/W 50839 M/W

New Smoking and Tobacco Regulations !!!

Did you know that new smoking regulations have been adopted by the City of Union City? Union City promotes a healthy living environment & protects non-smokers from exposure to secondhand smoke where they live, work, & play. In November, 2010, the City Council restricted smoking in rental complex units, unenclosed common areas, & outdoor dining spaces. Tobacco retailers also need to obtain a local Tobacco Retailer License.

No alcohol is allowed at any of our parks!

There is no exclusive use of any Union City park. Park permits only reserve picnic areas and BBQ units. There may be other events going on at the parks simultaneously.

Key Requirements:

• Smoking is prohibited in all rental complex (2+ units) common areas (enclosed & unenclosed). • As of Feb 23, 2012 smoking in any rental complex, including balconies & patios, is prohibited. • Smoking is prohibited in all outdoor dining areas of restaurants & surrounding 25 feet. • Smoking is prohibited in parks, public events, and service areas (i.e., bus stops, ATMs). • Clear, conspicuous, and unambiguous “NO SMOKING” or “SMOKEFREE” signs are required in places where smoking is not permitted. For more information, please refer to Municipal Code Chapters 5.42 and 7.13 or contact Avalon Schultz, Associate Planner, at (510) 675-5321 or ASchultz@unioncity.org

Sports Fields!!

Union City has several sporting fields available for reservation. Fields can be used for a variety of sports. You need to have a permit in order to use the field for any type of organized game or practice. For more information, please contact the sports field staff at the Union City Sports Center at (510) 675-5805.
