W ha t co uld I possib ly d o wit h m y life now! For the past 25 years I have been the person with the privilege and responsibility to grow one of the most successfully recognised and awarded community colleges in Australia. I also have the joy of sometimes reflecting on what makes it all worthwhile. Years ago, I was at a diverse gathering of local residents, some of whom had only recently come here to live. The Mayor at the time, responding to a question, gave her advice on how these new arrivals could get involved and connected in the community. She remarked that as well as appreciating the wonderful country that nurtures us, there were two immediate actions she strongly encouraged: one to be a volunteer (oh, so many options), and the other to enrol in an adult community education course (also so many options!). Then, much further back, I remember a time of confusion in my twenties where my place and view in the world seemed to slip from being meaningful. But I was fortunate not to stay in despair. The main turning point was finding enough of my own will and determination to change one aspect of my life. And with one action where I did have choice, a small spark went on to ignite new interests and relationships, that then gave deeper meaning and purpose to my onward journey. We live in a time where healing and a discerning vision are paramount…. maybe lifelong-learning is too. Learning from both the wisdom and the mistakes of the past, learning who we want to be and mix with, and learning how, amid all that is wrong with humanity, we can make light in our own authentic inner selves, enabling us to live, work and contribute with our best joyful intentions. So yes, enjoy a good flick through this delightful offering of learning. With my cast and crew, I’m proud to be overseeing my 100th program term and I’m still happily on the big learning curve of life! Looking here, you may satisfy the desire for something different, useful, creative, healthy or vocational (or all five!), you may enrich the business side and busy-ness of your life, and you may also end up engaging in an activity or two that connects you with other passionate, forwardthinking learners! We are blessed to be in the Byron Shire. We have some of the best tutors and offerings anywhere. Even people from other places tell us this. And then there’s a wonderful bunch of staff at the College, keeping it all flowing and to assist you if you want help and advice, or just to listen to your suggestions. All the best with your choices for this new year and may it be a good one. Warm regards Richard Vinycomb Director

Tutor for Certificate III in Permaculture

My journey in permaculture started as a child, at my grandfather’s farm that provided nearly everything he needed. Until I went to the city, I assumed everybody lived like that! His farm followed permaculture principles way before the term was coined. Permaculture and bamboo have been central to my life for over thirty years. I’ve established permaculture farms, taught workshops and started community gardens in far northern Queensland and Timor Leste, including with Indigenous and refugee communities. My great love is to work within these cultures. After returning to Mullumbimby to be with family in 2019, I was invited to teach at the College. Permaculture has changed over the past few years to being cool rather than a ‘dirty word’. It has shifted as more people are recognising climate change. Now, COVID has increased recognition of the importance of community. I love seeing students’ creativity and watching them reach their full potential. Through collecting warm eggs, gathering armfuls of produce to take home and turning cartwheels in the College courtyard, we come to celebrate the strengths of everybody in each group. My advice to anyone considering a permaculture course is to do some background homework before applying, including understanding that permaculture is not the same as gardening. We often have three times as many applications as there are places, including from people prepared to travel in order to do the course. Make use of the support of the College’s amazing administration staff and be prepared to commit. After all, who wouldn’t want to do permaculture?

GUITAR FOR BEGINNERS with Karl Farren

SONGWRITING with Tristan Alaba

If you’re one of the millions who bought a guitar, learned three chords (or less), got frustrated, and hasn’t picked up the guitar since, this class is for you! This is a fresh start, a chance to get over those ‘beginner’s blues’ and actually get to play stuff and enjoy it. So dust off your guitar, bring it along and join in. But be warned, you may well find you’ll acquire a lifelong addiction to playing your guitar. Additional materials $10. 6 Tue, 15 Feb - 22 Mar | 7 - 9 pm Mullum Concession: $166 Full Fee: $184

Songwriting combines music and poetry to be our most popular art form. The basic elements can be learnt and practiced, with lessons, examples and exercises presented in an accessible, interesting and inspiring way. This course will suit you if you are a reasonably confident beginner rather than a novice; can already play through some songs; or have already completed Karl’s Beginners course. What happens for a lot of us is we get to the stage of being able to play a few songs, but then get a bit stuck, and don’t know where to go next. What can easily happen then is that we get bored playing the same old things and not progressing. Karl has a bunch of cool things to show you that will enable you to break through that. Additional materials $10. 6 Wed, 16 Feb - 23 Mar 7 - 9 pm Mullum Concession: $166 Full Fee: $184

SOURDOUGH BUSINESS PATHWAYS

SBW Mentoring Program – What’s the value? In a changing world, this business woman found that mentoring can change your world for the better. When Janene Rees’ world was turned upside down, she signed up for a Sourdough webinar. She couldn’t have known how pivotal it would be for her business. Why did you decide to start Rees International? My husband Martin and I started Rees International in 2015, helping regional tourism businesses engage with international markets. We developed a coaching, mentoring, and consulting business, delivering training programs to get businesses international product ready. We grew quickly and won the NSW Tourism award for Best New Tourism Business in NSW in 2016. What was your biggest challenge before mentoring? I was in China just prior to Christmas 2019, hearing reports of people cancelling flights. Then our borders closed. That brought my business to a halt overnight. I was reeling. What do we do now? There is no Rees “International”. That same week my husband, Martin had a secondary cancer diagnosis. His prognosis was two months to live. Everything I was worried about – the business, covid, borders closing – it just became irrelevant. Martin is still with us 18 months later – surfing, working and his last two scans were completely clear. It’s a miracle.

Can you describe your mentor and what expertise they offered? Kate has given me hope. She opened my mind that it is okay not to be okay. And, that it is okay to change your mind and find the thing that is going to work for me. She was instrumental in developing a new initiative that combines my experience in tourism and my personal journey. ‘Project You’ is a carers’ retreat focusing on nature therapy, yoga and nutrition to be held in the hinterland. This was born 100 percent out of my mentoring with Kate. Any other insights you want to share about your mentoring experience? You need to be willing to have a really hard look at your business. Having an outsider look at your business is a very special thing as it is easy to get bogged down in the day to day. Nothing stays the same forever. You can’t know everything yourself. I highly recommend Sourdough’s mentorship program. For further information on becoming an SBP Mentor or Mentee go to: https://sbp.org.au/mentoring/

SOURDOUGH BUSINESS PATHWAYS

What inspired you to contact Sourdough and request a mentor? In 2020, my business was in hibernation and everyone was talking about ‘pivoting’. I signed up for a Sourdough webinar about goal setting. The facilitator, Kate Ramsay, mentioned her book. I got hold of a copy, and to my surprise, it was about her journey of moving to this region with her husband who was diagnosed with a terminal illness. I went straight back to her and told her my story. Kate suggested the Sourdough mentoring program. I jumped at the opportunity to participate.

Samuel Witham

Student in Certificate IV Community Services 2021

In the year prior to the Covid mayhem I was working as a volunteer in Thailand at a community wellness retreat. Then the pandemic hit and I had to come home. I had previously completed two and a half years of a Bachelor of Education at university. I did well but found it very challenging, and decided to postpone my studies. Before I went to Thailand I suffered from pretty severe depression. During my time there I thought I could start a new career and have a new beginning. Now that I was back in Australia, I wanted to continue my journey and give back to the community. My partner saw an ad for this course. I thought “What have I got to lose?” I didn’t know much about it, but I committed to it. The thing that surprised me about the Byron Community College is that you aren’t in a race to beat anyone but yourself. If you don’t achieve a pass, you can try again later. It’s an incredibly rewarding way of learning. Going to class was a highlight. It was a cycle: every week I was so excited, then the studies and role plays would start and then the overwhelm! But, by the next week I couldn’t wait to go to class again. I really enjoyed it. The course was really informative. It related to everyday life and to relationships with your family and friends. Each person in the course was different but the common thing we all shared was that we had some degree of life experience. People in the course could connect to some form of suffering. They want to help others because of personal things that have helped them. I see things in a different way now. Interactions and communication. Struggles. Things we all go through. The course, in essence, teaches you how to help people and that includes yourself. You are learning life skills.
