Koshino House

LIGHT & SHADOW

“The house, by Tadao Ando for the designer Koshin, is a veritable maze of lights and shadows. Like Barragan, the architect seeks to reconcile the tenets of international modernism with tradition and landscape, in this case, Japanese. So, The House Koshin is an example of contemporary architecture built in two parallel wings that barely interrupt the landscape.

CONCEPT : The Dance of Light Tadao Ando uses the understanding and manipulation of natural light , physical manifestation of the passage of time. Natural light signals the times of the day, providing different qualities of light as the sun penetrates the atmosphere at different angles. Natural light has a profound ability to convey built environment, a remarkable immediacy of 'place' and 'time'. Tadao Ando have conveyed this phenomenon so successfully have drawn from antiquity, designing simple forms with calculated approaches to capturing, manipulating, and displaying natural light.

Subtraction of Form [Light tunnel]

Tadao Ando’s design for the Koshino House features two parallel concrete rectangular confines. The forms are partially buried into the sloping ground of a national park and become a compositional addition to the landscape. Placed carefully as to not disrupt the pre-existing trees on the site, the structure responds to the adjacent ecosystem while the concrete forms address a more general nature through a playful manipulation of light.

Gallery- Contrasting the sheet of light along the curvilinear wall and rectilinear of the gallery allows a stream of a sunlight into a dark and cast shadow to form cave-like interior provides dramatic temporal experiences.

Living Room- Thin horizontal slit cut through at the ceiling allowing sunlight to penetrate causing a timeeffect to express fear of losing by creating the effect of light and shadow varies with the sun movement.

Living Room– Concrete slab with corrugated surfaces, illustrate dynamic and everchanging by creating wave-like structure that turns the material into a three-dimensional and change with the light's varying angles and intensities.

Natural faint light can be seen from far, conversely light loses its intensity as it moves further from light source creating visual depth and uncertain distance.

Contrasting of light and shadow express the total opposite of both enhance the experience of transformation over time by the dynamic and variable characteristics of sunlight.

House N

A tidy package with a porous wrapping, N House is a set of three nesting boxes that span the scales of city and domicile. The architecture is recognized as one of the symbolic landmark works as it sits at the center of Nishikimachi residential area dominated by two-storey pitched-roof timber detached homes in Oita City.

PLAN - SECTION

EXTERIOR Three progressive sized boxes nested inside one another, each of their proportion differs in accordance to the purpose of spaces.

CONCEPT : Disguise between Inside & Outside environment As Sou Fujimoto describes: “A distinct boundary is nowhere to be found, except for a gradual change in the domain. On e might say that an ideal architecture is an outdoor space that feels like the indoors and an indoor space that feels like the outdoors. In a nested structure, the inside is invariably the outside, and vice versa. My intention was to make an architecture that is not about space nor about form, but simply about expressing the riches of what are `between` houses and streets.”

VARIATING OPENINGS Differently scaled rectangular cuts are featured on the three nested boxes that delineate the space. These openings of varying sizes provide different amount of interaction for the users within the building with the pedestrians.

DESIGN : Box-in-Box-in-Box House N is comprised of three shells of progressive size nested inside one another, much like a hybrid of boxes. The outermost box covers the entire premises, creating a covered, semi-indoor garden. Second box encloses a limited space inside the covered outdoor space. Third box creates a smaller interior space where the users build their life inside this gradation of domain.

The number of openings per envelope varies, yet the ratio of enclosure to exposure looks the same on every roof or wall surface.

PRIVACY - Among the multiple nests, there are two, of which are the smallest and lays in the innermost part of this building. One of it is a bedroom which will provide the most privacy for the user as it is the smallest nest among the three layers.

SPACES - The building has various spaces nestled within it. Upon entering the first space of the building, you will be greeted with multiple nests of different sizes that lay within it, this is when you start your exploration of the interior spaces.

Temporal A BEAUTIFUL VIEW IS FLEETING 好景不常

Temporal From the day of our birth, we are guided by our parents under good circumstance. Soon after, we are capable to pursuit our own dreams and lives. Without realising, we are being ingulf into a fast-paced world, where we tend to neglect small details or moments that matters. Frankly, we have taken things for granted and not pause for a moment to look back and appreciate. “Temporal” uses interaction between light and architecture where the temporal experience is realized, a remarkable immediacy of 'place' and 'time. The beginning phase of life started off well lit up by a good amount of light, smooth texture and the guidance by light and shadow representing the moment when we assume life goes the way we have always known. Gradually, lights begun to fade into darkness and pathway begun to narrow down into a smaller passage leading us down to a sunken space of isolation filled with doubt and challenges, where footsteps echo. A rather thin stream of light changes direction according to the rotation of sun creating a sense of temporal. Also, reflecting the rough texture stained on the wall and uneven slope emerge from the ground expressing the hardship we are yet to overcome, as we go deeper the absence of light blind our vision, while our senses only rely on rough texture crafted on surfaces to move on another phrase, taught us to embrace the flaws and hardships, this space reflects the process of self-exploration without the guidance of “light”. A dramatic drop of stairs presents a light well that captures the most intensive light when sun is located right above give a feeling of temporal as shadow cast in after, therefore we learn to appreciate the temporal existence of light. A raised platform where we begin to contemplate under the small stream of light that lit up the stairway with horizontal slits beside. Thus, allows viewing of the journey we have gone through. In the last space, transition of light from individual holes merely last for a moment while light penetrate through opening at different angles varying the sun’s movement, creating Dramatic temporal experience that remind us of the eternal intangibles.

Circulation Scale and Proportion PROPORTION OF TRIANGLES The three main triangular forms are interlocked with each other to create different spaces. The volume of interlocking varies with every space too.

Space 1 - A smooth journey for users to enjoy and reminisce their childhood. Space 2 - Stairs leading down to the sunken second space of the building. This is a space of isolation and selfexploration. Space 3 - A floor down to third space. In this space, user will be greeted by intense sunlight coming from light well. Space 4 - Right under the stairs, a raised platform encourage user to contemplate what they have gone through. Going up the stairs, the building orientation allow user to view the passed journey through small opening along the stairs. WALL OPENINGS Situated in the fourth space of the building, these wall openings come in a variety of sizes and orientation. They allow a certain amount of light to shine in and gives the space a special atmosphere by creating different silhouttes of shadows. : :

It is a kind of fine finishing for concrete which remains the natural textured look of the material while giving the users a smooth sailing journey.

This concrete finishing is the roughest among many and is used as oart of the sensorial journey to provide guidance as part of the experience.

Broom Finishing :

W oo d gives off a warm feeling towards users and is used often used to give off a sense of comfort. It also echoes the footsteps of users well.

This finishing has the effect of fine lines and can be used to give a certain atmosphere under light and shadow effect.

Anthropometry Uneven Ground A study was also done o n h o w uneven ground level gives you a feeling of uneasiness while you travel through a space. An ordinary smooth surface on the other hand creates no surprise and excitement for the users.

Raised Platform A research on raised platforms was done as well as we have a seating area w ithin the buidling for users to rest on.

Narrow Entrance A narrow entrance was studied in our case as w e have a narrow entrance for our building which will then lead to a larger hallway, creating a contrast of scale and proportion between the entrance and the hallway.

Light and Shadow

Sun Path Building orientation is tilt according to the expose of sunlight. Therefore, designated opening will receive adequate sunlight to display light and shadow effect.

Space 4 Cut-outs of different sizes with various angles receive light at different phases varying the movement of sun, causing the light to fade from one and appear vividly from the other. >Emphasizing on temporal experience to reminds user of the eternal tangibles.

Light Well A vertical concrete "Light Well" channel up to the roof capture the most intensifying illumination at the particular moment and disappear. >offering a dramatic temporal experience that reflect appreciation and gratitude from user.

Stairway (to Space 4) A slit at eye level that runs through the walls of stairway provide user a vision to look back and reflect on the journey they have gone through. >Offer user to reminisce and indulge in the past.

Space 1 Opening on the wall arranged from dense; brighter to less dense; dimmer where light and shadow form the effect of rhythmic. > Giving user a guidance.

Concrete Roof Tiles {ROOFING} In a warmer climate, referring to Machap Baru, concrete roof tiles help relieving heat and ventilation. Meanwhile, matches the style of architecture in Machap Baru. SHEAR WALL {FOLLY} Due to the curvature of the structure, a shear wall is a structure panel that can resist lateral forces acting on it.

Truss Concrete Beams & Floor Joist

FINK TRUSS Scissor trusses are designed with a slope on the outside and inside. The bottom chords are angled to create vaulted ceilings.

REINFORCED CONCRETE {FOUNDATION COLUMN, BEAMS, FOOTING, FLOOR SLABS} Reinforced concrete will be the main material for this façade as it can absorbs the compressive stresses in a concrete structure.

Light Dome Filter and diffuse the daylight to provide even and glare-free daylight

Green Platform Provide shade, remove heat from the air, and reduce temperatures of the roof surface and surrounding air.

Project 2a Design Concept




Machap Walk – The smell of authentic cuisine, voices of crowd, sight of human activities and architecture, the tangibles evoke user’s sense and experience resonant as the intangible reminds.

Street of Machap – façades facing each other look as if they were greeting one another, give a sense of harmony.

Machap Lama – Hints of historical sunken village emerge when water recede, it reminds viewers of the meaning and experience of the past.

Abandoned House – Abandoned structure covered by wild plants shows the time that it was left untouched, quality and use that it once had.

Coffee Shops – the presence of “place and time” felt when a certain place brought the past to present, an insight into a moving process of life.

Masjid Tok Machap – Elements of fusion in culture difference infuse into an historical architecture facade reflects the state of past that yet for us to acquire in today’s society.

Tan Kung Shin Shrine – The combination of prominent hardscape surrounded by abundance of softscape come together as one, a peace and harmonious feel.


HEART OF MACHAP TIMELINE AND PLACE PAUSES, BUILDING STOOD STILL ; SOCIETY MOVES, NEVERENDINGLY. CONTRAST BETWEEN THE PERSISTENCE EXISTED ; TIMES AND GENERATIONS EVOLVING IN MACHAP BARU, THIS REFLECTS THE LACK OF APPRECIATION THE VALUES AND QUALITIES BY YOUNG GENERATIONS. THUS, THIS DESIGN INTENTION IS RE-CAPTURE THE ESSENCE AND BRING BACK THE FAMILIARITY IN MACHAP BARU, HARMONY, ALLOWING VISITORS TO “PAUSE FOR A MOMENT” TO REFLECT, EMBRACE, CONTEMPLATE AND APPRECIATE THROUGH THE TANGIBLE AND INTANGIBLE ELEMENTS. THEREFORE, THE DESIGN OF THIS BUILDING DERIVED FROM THE VERY ESSENCE EXTRACTED FROM MACHAP, HARMONY. THE CIRCLE IN THE MIDDLE WAS EMPHASISED, STANDING OUT FROM OTHER FORM IN THE ENTIRE BUILDING ILLUSTRATE THE BEATING HEART OF MACHAP BARU. MEANWHILE, OTHER BUILDING REVOLVES AROUND THE CENTRAL POINT, WHICH GIVES A STRONG SENSE OF HARMONIOUS.

MEMORIAL GALLERY – WHOLE OF MACHAP CAN BE EXPERIENCED THROUGHOUT GALLERY FILLED WITH HISTORY AND STORY. WHERE INTANGIBLES WILL FOREVER REMAINS IN ONE’S MIND TO REMIND THE TANGIBLES.

REALISATION VIEWING DECK – AN ELEVATED PLATFORM THAT OFFERS THE VIEW OF MACHAP BARU, A PLACE TO REMINENCE AND APPREACIATE THE VALUE WITHIN.

SERENITY PATHWAY – A QUIET PATH LEADING DOWN ALLOWS VISITORS TO COMTEMPLATE, INDULGE IN TO THE ATMOSPHERE WITH SOUND OF LEAVES RUSTLING, SOUND OF FLOWING WATER.

HEART OF MACHAP Machap Baru is a small village filled with rich culture and tradition. A place where harmony is found, no matter in architecture, food, religion or celebration. A village that embrace their own beauty of Harmony, also has retained their culture, beliefs and lifestyle. This somewhat shows a contrast between young and old generations having different visions of cultural values, values that are rarely appreciated in this younger generations. 'Heart of Machap' is a sacred place which resolve the gap between eras by offering experience that changes perspective of ones of Machap Baru, along the use of architecture to create harmony.


Spatial Organisation

Idea Derivation Ideas emerge from the essence found in the past and present of Machap, which I extracted were 'Harmony' that can be felt throughout and the 'Contrast' that grew through my knowing. The intentions is to create a space that encourage younger generations to understand and embrace, while for older generationsto indulge or reminisce the past. Meanwhile, tighten the bondand harmony within the village.

Heart

Harmony The middle of the whole mass is the so called 'beating heart of Machap" where entertainments are held and people gather makes it an evergreen space.

Harmony were represented by as if 'two hands' of the people of Machap embracing the heart of Machap in the middle, reflecting the values that are precious to them

Spatial Organisation Concept Development Decided on using linear form as it is single linear space that organizes along the length a series of space. This will guide user down a straight forward journey to memoryrepository.

Contrast

As heart of Machap represents the most prominent part of the whole facade. Therefore, emphasizingit in themiddle.

Due to the contour of the ground, slanted building will be a better option to blend-in with nature and harmonize with thesurroundingbuildings.

"CENTRALISED" Contrast were represented by the difference in height of facade, showing the vary perspective of generations as the lower represents old generation that stay closer to the 'past' while taller represents young generations living further away.

Parallel Block are used in order to create a loop effect surrounding theHeart of Machap

Curve the structure to add more interest and resemble the "Hands of Machap People"

Underground were implemented to give sufficient headspace and synchronize with thejourneytravellingfrom 'Present to Past'

Gathering space . It's an amphitheater for visitors to enjoy the performance and gather around to meet new people and bond.

Walkway. Leads you to Administrative office, washroom and cafe with the rhythmic design elements to create harmony.

Administrative Office. Visitors are gladly invited into the administrative office for any assistance prior starting their journey Washroom

Contemplation Space. A quiet space echoing the sound of flowing water Viewing Deck. Once visitors exit contemplation space, viewing deck falling from the walls of Gathering Space, as if submerge in the water allows them to appreciate the beautiful view of Machap and lake to reflectsthepast where Machap Lamawas appreciate and embrace.

Outdoor Reading Space.Arelaxing outdoor space design for users to read and enjoy theviewsinside and out.

Resting Space.Benchessurrounding a tree, along with the gushing soothing sound of waterfall provide acalming atmosphere for relaxing.

Exterior Stairs. A set of stairs split into two directions, (left) to Book Archive; (right) to Outdoor reading space.

Indoor Cafe. Cafe serving Authentic Machap cuisine for users to experience.

Gallery. Aplace where offers visitor to watch the process of famous Laicha and Roti Kok in the making. In a dark space photosand story of history of Machap were exhibited , tangibles reminds visitors of the intangibles .

BookArchive. Aplace that allow visitors to read the collections and book .

Rooftop Cafe. Visitor have the options to dine outdoor with the spectacular view of Machap and performance going on below.
