At the same time Indian companies are increasingly focussing on the Cloud primarily due to a need for faster innovation, business agility, reduced goto-market time and scalability for their offerings. Purswani also emphasized italicizing on

public cloud, saying, the India Public Cloud services revenue is projected to grow 37.5 percent in 2018 to total US$2.5 billion, up from US$1.8 billion in 2017, according to Gartner, Inc. The highest growth will be driven by infrastructure as a service (IaaS) which was projected to grow at 49.2% in 2017, followed by 33% in software as a service (SaaS) and 32.1% in platform as a service (PaaS). On the other hand, to get further inputs on the technology-front, we asked Amod Phadke, Direct - Sales & Marketing, GCR on his thoughts. Where he promptly says, Wearables, Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Everything IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communication are the technologies we can expect to swell in the coming time. Is rapid development of standards and pressure on power consumption and minimizing area remains a bottleneck for modern SoC designs? The emergence of battery-operated System-on-Chip (SoC) in recent years increased the efforts to reduce the power consumption. Early works identified the need of minimizing the power consumption at the initial hardware/ software codesign process. In today’s era, there is a crucial need for efficient power consumption simulation and estimation tools. The increased complexity of modern SoC applications limits the capabilities of such

simulation tools to predict the exact measured power consumption. We at Avnet focus on a modular approach to deliver innovation in developing modern SoC. Is verifying complete system in a SoC design still a major challenge? The electronic devices today are architected through a SoC design paradigm. The success of system-on--chip (SoC) hinges upon a well-concerted integrated approach from multiple disciplines, such as device, design, and application. There are several challenges that one may face while integrating components on the chip. Firstly, there is a huge gap between what can be theoretically designed and what can be practically implemented. New requirements on performance, power consumption, and rapid design cycles necessitate that one revisits the fundamental design principles. For instance, one of the persistent challenges is how to deploy in concert an ever increasing number of transistors with acceptable power consumption. Another challenge is that in order to meet the increasingly demanding requirements in multimedia applications, SoC must provide functional flexibility as well as processing capability. For new applications in Industrial IoT, rapid prototyping or in data crunching environments, verifying the complete system

What will mitigate the complex system design and timing closure problems of complex SoC designs? SoC design cycle requires detailed verification and it will be helpful if designers work on timing closures from very early in the design. For example, in any Xilinx SoC design- the customer has access to the world class EDA tool, Vivado – which is provided by Xilinx. The inbuilt simulation tool helps in sorting problems very early in the design cycle. Here the old adage ‘prevention is better than cure’ is of paramount importance. How complicated is SoC architecture in network design? As SoCs continue to evolve to have more and more programmable elements and processors on them, the opportunity to tune the processors, interconnect and other blocks to match the intended application and gain advantages of performance and energy consumption is one that many designers are still not aware of.The other challenge is around IP integration that has become pivotal in determining whether design teams of advanced system on chips (SoCs) meet their time to market and performance goals. The rapid growth in the number of available intellectual property (IP) blocks has both enabled and paralleled the increase in the size and complexity of SoCs. One of the most difficult challenges in SoC network design is determining how to make sure the hardware and software work together at the SoC level. Hardware verification has advanced to the point where the verification of individual functional blocks in a design can be achieved with reasonable confidence using constrained code coverage, assertion coverage, and functional coverage. Challenges remain in making sure the blocks work correctly when placed

in the context of the SoC. Whether in telecommunications or consumer electronics, network design using SoC requires lot of planning by designers. Engineers need to have modular design approach while doing network design, and always under time to market pressure. Design verification has always a highly expensive and timeconsuming component of electronic system development? How Systemon-Chip (SoC) architectures morphed verification? The main challenge for SoC design today is that increased functionality is packed in each of the new chip available. Shrinking die size and better power management is enabling designers to have more advanced SoC, however this comes with challenges of better techniques of verification. At every level - whether module, chip or system leveldesigners need to use tools to validate the design. Latest SoC architectures help in various ways by giving better tools and more predictive analysis for designers.

How difficult is matching Security protocol in modern SoC designs? SoCs or the systems developing them are prone to a wide range of security attacks. Security has become a critical consideration in the design cycle of every embedded SoC or system. The level of security in a SoC design is widely debated based on the critical nature of the applications and the

associated cost-benefit risks tradeoffs. Some of the modern SoC always comes with various security inbuilt. Designers now have options to add on security by using secure elements. Applications such as Internet of Things (IoT) have significantly expanded from consumer-based applications like healthcare, smart home and wearables, to industrial applications such as industrial automation and the smart city. And, all these applications use Microcontrollers (MCUs) widely. According to market research, the handheld device market is expected to further grow, with billions of devices connected to the internet in the near future. This market represents a huge opportunity for device manufacturers. Other than MCUs, most of these devices consist of PMIC, RFIC, sensors and small batteries, which sense motions from humans and other things and communicate with cloud.


Handheld devices are typically used without power lines. In many use cases, the battery is seldom re-charged or replaced. To minimize current consumption, MCUs, along with other system components, must typically maintain active mode for brief periods of time, mostly operating in a sleep mode. Sleep current greatly affects the standby power of the device. It is not negligible and impacts the overall power consumption particularly for handheld devices that stay in sleep mode frequently. The current profile in sleep mode enables the designer to validate whether the device is in an unexpected state and consuming more power due to bugs in the software or hardware. Current profile analysis provides the designer with the current value and timing of each transition or segment in detail, and helps the designer to validate if the entire system is operated and managed as expected. In addition, the total current in the active state is the operating current consumption, which impacts the power consumption. An accurate current profile enables designers to analyze each segment in detail and quantitatively determine the optimum balance between performance and current consumption, which has been difficult by measuring the averaged current. Inrush currents and spikes occur when the device changes mode, for example, from sleep to active mode. It can cause a voltage drop of supply voltage or a degradation of battery capacity. Concurrent analyses of current and voltage waveforms on supply voltage and subsystems can provide indications of problem causes for troubleshooting. It also helps designers optimize the timing control and component selections, and validate designer modifications perform as expected. Achieving an optimal balance between performance and power consumption to maximize battery life; reduce the circuit design cycles of complicated, multifunctional products to meet time-to-market goals; and maintain a competitive advantage is the need of the hour. Preventing product defects to avoid costly recalls is critical. Handheld devices are typically shipped in high volumes. It is therefore vital to prevent any defects from occurring in advance, because any quality issues that result in measures, such as a product recall, can be extremely costly.

Having said that, for handheld and mobile applications, measuring the power profile of low power devices, like Microcontrollers, is key. Visualizing the transient current waveform, quickly analyzing transient current response to applied voltage pulse and efficiently performing reliability tests are key tests among the number of tests performed by validation Engineers to test MCUs. Power profile analysis of MCUs (microcontrollers) is an important parameter that needs to be characterized efficiently, especially, when more MCUs are leveraged in a battery powered environment. Power hungry microcontrollers will eventually lose, paving the way for more energy efficient ones. And, with technologies like IoT being part of every other handheld system, energy consumption behavior of microcontrollers will play a big role in overall system performance. State-of-the-art power and current analyzers are a must have in engineering labs these days for the aforementioned reasons. Investment in these type of solutions can go a long way in getting the needed first mover advantage. In addition, signal integrity and power integrity issues are becoming more common due to the compact circuit design with closer components or traces, as well as lower DC supply voltages and tolerances. Potential issues for EMI or EMC should be detected at early stages of the design phase to avoid costly re-test and delayed time-tomarket. All these design and test challenges can be minimized with the right test solutions. Modern Device Current Waveform Analyzers can greatly accelerate the process of creating a current profile based on the precise dynamic current waveform, and dramatically improve debug efficiency. Simultaneous monitoring of voltage and current is possible in these current waveform analyzers. Also, these analyzers can help understand how the voltage changes with variations in current, and validate, debug and troubleshoot the circuit modifications quantitatively and efficiently thus speeding up validation and debug time. Electronic instrumentation vendors offer a wide range of test solutions to address many of these consumer electronics test challenges. Can you share an anecdote on your unique business model of Rent and Lease Testing Equipment which seems to me 'One of its Kind' for Indian market? The concept of rentals is not new. Rental options are available for high end automobiles, fashion and outfits, infrastructure machinery and tools. Traditionally in the technology industry, R&D engineers and organisations have owned the equipment that they needed for testing. The rate at which the technology was changing was much slower. However, in the last decade or so, the technological changes have been enormous and the life cycle of products has become shorter. On the other hand, the need to have a faster go to market has been ever increasing. This has led the organisations to rethink how they operate and adopt business models that can meet these requirements whilst protecting their investments. With the concept of the rental services in T&M equipment, we

have demonstrated a business model that not only helps customers acquire the right technology at the right time at the right place but also maximize the use of their available budget and be protected from obsolescence. What challenges does Microlease perceive to stand a potent ground in future via the Indian Market Scenario? Well, it is very subjective question. For India to become forerunner of the technologies, country and industry to improve the innovation culture right from the school & colleges/ university levels. It can somehow be achieved with culture of real meaning of the internships and off course to promote innovations. For T&M Industry, I see tough price competition, import of low quality products from China and high rate of GST rate` 18% are few challenges.

It’s highly commendable that, Microlease has been in the T&M business for over 30 years catering to all the major names in the industry. Has there been any competition pressure on Microlease? How does Microlease stand out from its competition in the market? Yes! of course, there has been competition and it continues to be there. Competition for us comes in all shapes and forms. The biggest competition that we face is the buying mindset of the companies which they have developed over the last few decades. In the business of

technology, the R&D cycles have been reasonably long and hence customers traditionally have been owning test equipment for long periods. However, this is changing now due to faster technological developments and higher obsolescence rates and of course rising cost pressures. Apart from this, we have and continue to face competition from both local as well as International companies engaged in the same business. Competition, I personally feel, is healthy and promotes innovation. After all, it can sometimes get really boring also being the only player in the market place and can lead to complacency, which is the last thing we would want. Our ability to cater to a large segment of customers through its Global presence and a huge inventory is one of the key differentiators for us. Also, this business has been evolving and growing over the last 3 decades and that shows how agile and dynamic we are in adopting to the customer and market needs and that continues to be our strength as we move along.

Current scenario of T&M market in India and how is Microlease collaring to tap the major chunk? India is emerging as the forerunner in the next era of tech innovations. The Indian ESDM sectors have witnessed the growth in recent years along with shift in focus from pure play systems or product designs to include area such as product development, original design manufacturing and so on. The high product quality, safety and environmental standards for manufacturing, maintenance and use of equipment. The government initiatives Make in India, Smart Cities, Defense Manufacturing are pushing new requirements for TM business. We have witnessed requirements coming from Semiconductor Hardware Testing (digital interconnects like HDMI, MIPI, USB, Ethernet), Automotive Electronics, Electronics (Automotive Sensors Integration, Vehicle Networking and Communications) Manufacturing and General-Purpose Electronics. We have also observed regional Test Houses for EMI/EMC coming up

in south and north and it is really a positive sign for local manufacturing. Telecom industry has been going through a phase of consolidation and tariff wars but continues to remain an attractive segment with a lot of potential especially in the wake of upcoming technologies like 5g-IOT.

Over the last 2 years we have gone through two major Acquisitions and that has made is bigger and better in terms of our ability to cater to the evergrowing needs of our customers. Last year we were acquired by Electrorent which has made us number 1 T&M Rental company globally with an inventory strength of over 108000 test equipment over 8000 product lines and the financial strength and capability to invest further into upcoming technologies.

Spirent uses NI software defined radio products to develop a solution that can help accelerate commercialization of 5G New Radio. Spirent Communications and National Instruments (NI) have collaborated to develop test systems for 5G New Radio (NR) devices. The partnership between the two, Spirent and NI, will allow 5G chipset and device manufacturers to validate the performance of 5G NR smartphones and IoT devices in

the lab without requiring access to expensive and complex 5G base stations (gNodeBs). The announcement comes inclining with the recent 5G standards body, 3GPP, officially approving the first round of 5G specifications in June 2018. This important step to be followed by the specification of new architectural options and additional capabilities as the standard is expanded over the coming months and years. Consequently, device

Rohde & Schwarz and MediaTek Collaborate on mmWave OTA Measurement Technologies Rohde & Schwarz, teamed up with MediaTek for a strategic collaboration MediaTek to accelerate the development of mmWave OTA measurement technologies. MediaTek, as one of the leading mobile platform provider, has placed major investments in 5G and is among the key global brands readying solutions for the launch for the upcoming 5G commercial rollout. To successfully launch 5G, several key technology developments need to be accelerated, some of which are massive MIMO antenna arrays, algorithm design, and Over-the-Air (OTA) testing. Alexander Pabst, Vice President Systems & Projects at Rohde & Schwarz, commented, “We are pleased to cooperate with MediaTek for OTA development to ensure 5G product testing requirements. Rohde & Schwarz is committed to accompany the evolution path from 4G to 5G with innovative test and measurement solutions.” In 5G mmWave communication systems, there are some challenges to be solved to ensure seamless user experiences. For example, high path loss and shadowing effects could significantly decrease signal strength. To improve signals, MediaTek is working on chipset development that includes beamforming antenna array design technology. To ensure quality and the characteristics of each beam, it is important to have a testing environment to measure multiple beam streams precisely and a reliable

and speedy chamber is required. In this joint cooperation, MediaTek leverages Rohde & Schwarz OTA solution to improve measurement technology. Rohde & Schwarz provides a complete 5G mmWave OTA turnkey solution based on the R&S ATS series to perform the testing. The R&S ATS Series includes • a rack-sized shielded RF test chamber on castors, • suitable mounts for test objects and sensors, • wideband measurement antenna, which covers the whole frequency range. Using the associated test and measurement equipment and the antenna measurement software, radiation patterns of 5G antenna arrays can be measured extremely precisely in just a few minutes.

A positioning laser supports precise orientation of test objects. All this makes the R&S ATS series antenna test system the ideal test environment for fast and accurate repeatable measurements. applications spanning automobiles, fitness watches, drones, phones, laptops, and much more. Meanwhile, IR LEDs are also featuring in a couple of trials of Li-Fi systems by Germany’s Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, in which infrared waves transmit data in two-way, Wi-Fi-like transmissions, using light rather than Wi-Fi’s radio spectrum. Fraunhofer has experimented with infrared Li-Fi at a BMW plant, and is hopeful that its infrared Li-Fi will catch on for outdoor communications in partnership with Japanese telecommunications company Sangikyo. Li-Fi in other instances also embeds data in visible light. The non-illumination use of LED chips is part of a broader trend among lighting companies in which they are treating the lighting infrastructure as an information technology network aimed at gathering, analyzing, and monetizing data. Further stating on the lacuna of the internet, Phadke said, although India has seen newer telecom players providing low-cost internet services. However, the availability of Internet across the regions at a similar pace or speed is still an issue. IoT security also adds up as one of the major glitches that India faces in cloud adoption, the issue with security and IoT is that it drastically increases the attack surface, which means that exist a huge number of devices, operating systems, protocols and endpoints. Therefore, there are a lot more pathways present in the network because of which they face the inbuilt security challenges. Ganeshan added, in India many the sectors have adopted cloud for their organisational growth, however Software Deployment, Implementation & rollout to multiple offices have come up as the challenges in cloud adoption by Indian organisations. Reliability is one of the largest challenges of AI, ML or cloud telephony as keeping in mind the fact that we cannot completely bank on the internet and telephony infrastructure of our country.

The policy is aimed to minimize dependence on imports and infuse self-sufficiency in Defence manufacturing. Single-engine fighter aircraft, light armored helicopters, submarines, main battle tanks and armored fighting vehicles are the categories initially opened for bidding by such strategic partnerships. Defense Electronics Market – The New Lingo Within the defense sector, Defence electronics have emerged as a key market. As per estimates from India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) president M. N. Vidyashankar today, of the $42.2 billion Defence budget, Defence electronics was allocated about $6.25 billion. The Powerful Agni-V Gets Induction Clearance, Bolsters India’s Military Prowess India is all set to induce the first batch of its intercontinental ballistic missile system, Agni-V. Agni-V is known to aim targets across China within its range fostering India’s military prowess. According to recent official sources, the missile system, with a strike range of 5,000 km and capable of carrying nuclear warhead, is being inducted into the elite Strategic Forces Command (SFC). A series of user trials is being conducted before the country's most sophisticated weapon is handed over to the SFC, sources said.Defence experts said the missile is capable of bringing targets across China, including its prominent cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, under its range. Last month, Agni-V was successfully test-fired off the Odisha coast and the sources said a number of other preinduction tests are being planned in the next few weeks. "It is a strategic asset which will act as a deterrent. We are at the fag end of the strategic project," said an official, who is part of the Agni-V programme. He said it is the most advanced weapon

in its series as it has latest technologies for navigation and its capability of carrying nuclear warhead is much superior. The first batch of Agni-V will be handed over to the SFC "soon", the sources said, while declining to elaborate further on the closely-guarded defence project. The missile is being inducted at a time when India's neighbourhood is witnessing evolving security threats. Very few countries, including the US, China, Russia, France and North Korea,

have intercontinental ballistic missiles. In its armoury, India currently has Agni1 with a 700-km range, Agni-2 with a 2,000-km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with a 2,500-km to more than 3,500-km range. The government is also working on several key projects including integrating the BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile on 40 Sukhoi combat aircraft. The defence ministry is now expediting the process to integrate the BRAHMOS missile on 40 Sukhoi combat aircraft.

Aerospace major Airbus lately on-boarded Ashish Saraf as Head of the helicopter division of Airbus India. Saraf incumbency was effective from July 1, 2018 and will takeover from Xavier Hay, who leaves India after six years to take over new responsibilities. "Saraf joins Airbus Helicopters at a time when the company is competing on several military helicopter projects that would reinforce and enhance the local aerospace and defence industrial ecosystem," Airbus said in a statement. "Airbus Helicopters is a market leader in the Indian civil and parapublic market with close to 100 helicopters in operation today, and it is helping to develop new market segments such as Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) and helitourism in the country." As per the statement, since 2015, Saraf had been serving as Vice President - Industry Development, Strategic Partnerships and Offsets at Airbus India, focusing on 'Make in India' initiatives aimed at enhancing the company's industrial footprint.

Before joining Airbus, Saraf was the India Head of the Tata Sikorsky joint venture and led Sikorsky's industrialisation and strategic partnerships.

M&A in Global A&D Reached $24.2Bn in First Half of 2018 The global value of merger and acquisition deals in the global aerospace and defense industry reached $24.2 billion during the first half of 2018, a figure that reflects a 30 percent rise over the same period last year. PwC said the number of M&A transactions in the A&D sector dropped by 17 percent to 187 deals in the first half of this year, which remains 4 percent higher than the 10-year deal volume average per year. The report noted that the sector’s average M&A deal size was $315 million in the first two quarters of 2018, representing a 50 percent increase over the first half of 2017. PwC said that figure can be attributed to General Dynamics’ $9.7 billion acquisition of CSRA and the and the

agreement Boeing unveiled in May to buy aviation parts and services provider KLX for approximately $4.2 billion, including $1 billion in net debt. “We believe the factors impacting

commercial aerospace and defense, as well as the industry’s liquidity position, bode well for continued strength in deal making,” said Bob Long, U.S. aerospace and defense deals leader at PwC.

Chinese major chipmaker Tsinghua Unigroup has known to have inked an acquisition deal to acquire French smart chip components maker Linxens for about 2.2 billion euros (US$2.6 Bn). The deal was in process for over a month which has now taken the public limelight. Tsinghua’s acquisition of Linxens from private-equity group CVC is still pending regulatory clearance, three of the sources told Reuters, adding regulators in France, Germany and the company’s union need to approve the deal. According to three sources, Tsinghua has already locked in a deal with four banks for a 1.5 billion euro (US$1.75 billion) bridge loan to fund the

transaction. Credit Suisse, a main lender in the loan, also advised the seller, the people said. So far this year, China has spent $45.5 billion on European assets, more than double year-ago levels, while its investments in the United States has dropped 75 per cent to $1.9 billion, according to Thomson Reuters data. The authorities are not expected to object, the sources said on condition of anonymity as the information is confidential. Failure to get local regulatory approval has previously scuttled Tsinghua’s offshore investment plans, such as share purchases totalling $2.6 billion from three

Microchip Technology has introduced new two- and three-channel power monitoring devices that measure from 0V to 32V on a single chip, offering designers solutions that are easy to adopt and improve power measurement accuracy. Microchip’s PAC1932/33 devices include precisely what is needed to measure power on a single Integrated Circuit (IC), integrating multiple channels in a single package for applications such as Point of Sale (POS) systems, ATMs and building automation. This reduces costs for system designers while also consolidating their Bill of Materials (BOMs), as the measurement of sub 1V to 20V voltage rails normally require separate components to measure each rail efficiently. The devices’ ability to

measure voltage rails under 1V to as high as 32V also relieves developers from having to reconfigure measurement resolution between low and high current load events. As the industry’s only two-channel device with 16-bit power measurement, the PAC1932 can measure without host intervention for 17 minutes, relieving developers from adjusting voltage or current range to measure power and energy. The devices include two 16-bit Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) that can measure voltage and current simultaneously, enabling developers to extract a true power measurement. As a result, developers can better design systems to efficiently save power.

With these new series of power-management ICs (PMICs) from Maxim Integrated Products, designers can optimize power for automotive advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) functions to achieve high performance, small size, efficiency, and electrical protection. ADAS functions, many of which are now mandatory or will be soon, increase vehicle safety and enhance the driving experience. Renesas Electronics has announced two new PMBus compliant, fully digital DC/DC controllers that provide single output point-of-load (POL) conversions for FPGAs, DSPs, ASICs, network processors and general purpose system rails. The ISL68300 with integrated MOSFET drivers and ISL68301 with PWM output simplify designing power supplies for data center, wired and wireless

communications, and factory automation equipment. The ISL68300 can drive discrete external MOSFETs directly, while the ISL68301 pairs with Renesas’ smart power stages or DrMOS power stages to create a complete voltage regulator solution. The ISL68300 and ISL68301 digital controllers feature a high-speed current share bus that parallels up to eight controllers in an 8-phase 240A+ current share configuration. Both

controllers implement Renesas’ digital ChargeMode control modulation, which responds to load transients in a single switching cycle, and provides an inherently stable control loop without requiring external compensation. This modulation architecture significantly reduces output capacitor requirements and minimizes Vout undershoot and overshoot.

Vicor New Extended DCM in ChiP Package for Enhanced Output Voltage Regulation Models Vicor has massively extended its family of DC-DC converter modules (DCMs) with tighter output voltage regulation of ±1%. Vicor has introduced 25 new products sporting unrivaled power densities of 1,032W/in3. The new series from Vicor is said to allow engineers to drive loads requiring tighter regulation with minimal additional circuitry or downstream components. The DCM ChiP (Converter housed in Package) is a DC-DC converter module that operates from an unregulated, wide range input to generate an isolated, regulated DC output. With its high frequency zero-voltage switching (ZVS) topology, the DCM converter consistently delivers high efficiency across its entire input voltage range. Vishay Intertechnology Unveils New Series of Automotive Grade Power LEDs The AEC-Q101 qualified devices by Vishay Intertechnology feature luminous intensity to 1400, are offered in PLCC-2 and ultra-compact MiniLED Packages. Vishay Intertechnology has unveiled two new series of surface-mount Automotive Grade power LEDs in PLCC-2 and ultracompact MiniLED packages. Utilizing the latest advanced AllnGaP technology in the smallest chip size available, the Vishay Semiconductors VLMx335xx and VLMx235xx series deliver high brightness and maximum drive current up to 50 mA for automotive, industrial, and consumer applications. The AEC-Q101 qualified LEDs introduced by Vishay combine low thermal resistance down to 400 K/W with power dissipation of 130 mW, which in

turn enables their high drive current. The small 2.3 mm by 1.3 mm by 1.4 mm size of the VLMx235xx's MiniLED package and VLMx335xx's high luminous intensity to 1400 mcd make them ideal for automotive interior and exterior lighting; traffic signals and signs; and indicators and backlighting for audio and video equipment, LCD switches, and symbols for general use.

Offered in super red, red, amber, soft orange, and yellow, the LEDs feature a lead-frame embedded in a white thermoplast, with an inside reflector filled with a clear epoxy. The devices offer a ± 60° angle of half-intensity, forward voltage down to 1.8 V, and a luminous intensity ratio per packing unit of ≤ 1.6, and they are categorized, per packing unit, for luminous intensity and color. RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green, the LEDs are available in 8 mm tape, offer an ESD-withstand voltage up to 2 kV in accordance with JESD22-A114-B, and are compatible with preconditioning according to JEDEC Level 2a.

ROHM Rolls-Out New CMOS Op-Amp, Delivers LeadingClass Low Noise The latest addition of ROHM, LMR1802G-LB is ideal for industrial applications that demand high-accuracy sensing, including sonar and optical sensors

Key Features 1. Easy to use despite low noise results in the industry’s best performing CMOS op-amps This latest product combines ROHM’s superior analog technology covering circuit design (new circuit at the differential input stage), layout (analog design cultivated over many years), and processes (optimized for low noise) to achieve ultra-low-noise. The input equivalent noise voltage density of 2.0nV/√Hz at 1kHz and 7.8nV/√Hz at 10Hz are approximately half that of products on the market, ensuring superior low-noise performance. In addition, in the past when pursuing lower noise in opamps there were problems such as poor phase margin and capacitive load characteristics, as well as oscillation that

made circuit design difficult, but introducing a new circuit at the differential input stage allowed ROHM to achieve industrylow noise along with a class-leading phase margin of 68° and capacitive load tolerance of 500pF. This doubles the detection capability of sensor signals over conventional solutions, enabling accurate amplification of voltages on the order of µV, improving performance with sensors that demand higher precision. 2. Minimizes input offset voltage and input bias current In terms of op-amp configuration, the output voltage should be 0V when the input is 0V, but an offset voltage is often generated as an error. Also, if the sensor’s output impedance is high the sensor output voltage will be affected if the input bias current of the op-amp is large. Consequently, these two error factors must be made as small as possible to ensure optimal performance. ROHM has recently announced the availability of a CMOS op-amp featuring the lowest noise in the industry optimized for industrial applications requiring high-accuracy sensing, such as accelerometers used in sonar systems and optical sensors that handle ultra-small signals. In recent years, in addition to IoT devices, sensors are being adopted in a variety of applications from portables and vehicle systems to industrial equipment, to improve functionality and provide advanced control. Used to detect and convert various environmental and physical changes into signals, sensors demand high accuracy, but at the same time peripheral sensor circuitry is trending towards lower voltages to achieve greater power savings. • D ata Portability: The right to retrieve and reuse personal data, for own purposes, across different services. GDPR also introduces a new obligation on organizations to notify relevant authorities of any personal data breach likely to result in a risk to “the rights and freedoms of individuals”. Where that risk is deemed ‘high’, notification must also be extended to the affected data subjects. Notifications must be made ‘without undue delay’ and where feasible, within 72 hours of the event discovery. Note, one way to ensure that a breach would not likely result in a risk to EU resident data owners is to encrypt all collected personal data. If this strategy is pursued, organizations need to consider their ability to support large amounts of encrypted traffic in transit and at rest. The GDPR acts as a means of protecting personal data for EU residents across the globe. This means that any business or organization that processes or stores the data of EU residents are subject to GDPR rules and regulations—regardless of whether the healthcare facility physically operates in European Union countries.

A Closer Look at the General Data Protection Regulation The GDPR is a fundamental shift in the protection of an individual’s data and privacy. Prior to this legislation, personal data was widely viewed as the property of the businesses who collected and stored the information. In May, however, any personal data of European Union residents will be seen as the individual’s property, and the GDPR provides rights regarding the access and usage of their data by organizations. At its core, the GDPR defines the rights of the individual as they relate to data protection. These rights can be broadly summarized as follows: • Informed Consent: The right to be clearly informed why the data is needed and how it will be used. Consent must be explicitly granted and can be withdrawn at any time. • Access: The right to access, free of charge, all data collected, and to obtain confirmation of how it is being processed. • C orrection: The right to correct data if inaccurate. • E rasure and the Right To Be Forgotten (RTBF): The right to request erasure of one’s data.

How Can Healthcare Organizations Comply with the GDPR?

In order for healthcare organizations to comply with the GDPR, there are a number of requirements, some healthcare specific, that must be adhered to. All “personal data,” defined as “any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person,” has to be gathered in accordance with Article 5 of the GDPR, meaning data must be: • Collected for specified, legitimate and explicit purposes and not processed in a way which is incompatible with them. • Processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner. • Processed to ensure appropriate security of data. • Adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which it is processed. • Accurate and kept up to date. • Kept in a form which permits identification of data subjects for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which it is processed. • Controlled by a controller who is responsible for the data and able to demonstrate compliance. As mentioned earlier, healthcare organizations have a unique set of higher standards to adhere to. Specifically, certain personal data—known as genetic data, data concerning health and biometric data—can’t be processed unless it falls into certain categories. Before we dive into what those categories are, we should define the three types of healthcare-related personal data subject to the specific regulation. Genetic data: personal data relating to the inherited or acquired genetic characteristics of a natural person that give unique information about the physiology or health of that natural person and that result, in particular, from an analysis of a biological sample from the natural person in question. Data that concerns health: personal data related to the physical or mental health of a natural person, including the provision of health care services, which reveal information about his or her health status.

Biometric data: personal data resulting from specific technical processing relating to the physical, physiological or behavioral characteristics of a natural person, which allow or confirm the unique identification of that natural person, such as facial images or dactyloscopic data. While the GDPR prohibits the unnecessary collection of personal data by healthcare organizations, there are several exceptions that allow for its collection. In order for healthcare organizations to collect specific personal data, the collection has to fall into one or more of the following categories: 1. Data has been given with explicit consent from the owner 2. Processing data is necessary to the “vital interests” of the patient/provider 3. Processing is needed for the purposes of preventative or occupational medicine 4. Data is necessary for the good of the public health What are the Penalties for NonCompliance? Failure to comply with the GDPR can mean serious fines for healthcare organizations. Fines are calculated based on a number of factors but can range up to the greater of €20 million ($24.8 million) or four percent of global annual turnover. The word “greater” here is important. If compliance failure or a data breach is discovered and penalized, the higher-generating sum at the time of the fine will be used. This means that if four percent of global income for the healthcare organization was higher than 20 million Euros, the fine would be the amount equal to four percent of global income. How Can Healthcare Facilities Brace for the GDPR? If your healthcare facility finds itself having to meet GDPR requirements, there are several actions you should be taking to help ensure that you’re compliant: First, you should audit your facility to determine the personal data that needs to be reorganized for compliance. Make sure you include

insight into what data is collected, how its collected and the purpose for collecting the data. Second, ascertain how the data is being processed, stored, transferred and shared inside/outside your facility. Organize and consolidate any possible information silos to ensure that the necessary information isn’t being lost in badly implemented processes or technologies. Once you’ve audited information protected under the GDPR, you should invest in educating and training staff on the revised data life cycle requirements; updating the procedures for gathering, using, storing and destroying personal information. In addition, data security and privacy teams need to be prepared should any information be audited or requested by an EU resident. Next, you should review your cybersecurity capabilities. Determine if your organization is capable of detecting and reporting data breaches within the required 72-hour window. Breach detection is very difficult, even for the largest enterprises. In fact, the majority of data breaches is detected by third parties – usually by customers or law enforcement. If it can’t, you should update your cybersecurity capabilities to help protect your organization against breaches across the attack space. Finally, you should commit your organization to rigorous risk-based cybersecurity program characterized by continuously assessing your GDPR relevant data life cycle and the organization’s overall security posture. While compliance does not necessarily mean secure, given the heavy fines associated with the GDPR, consistently checking for weaknesses within your organization ensures a strong foundation for response should an EU citizen request his or her information, submit a complaint or, worst-case scenario, if sensitive data has been breached. n

Karnataka Will Lag Behind Due to the Absence of Comprehensive Mobile Tower PolicySolutions

Draft of the Karnataka Government on installation of new “Telecommunication Infrastructure Towers Regulations, 2015” still pending for notification Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA) highlighted that draft policy of Karnataka named as “Telecommunication Infrastructure Towers Regulations, 2015” is pending for notification since 2016. The draft tower policy pending for notification for more than 2 years imposes issues such as restriction on the location of towers such as restriction on the location of mobile tower installation, requirements of multiple documents and NOCs, non-availability of Government land & buildings, exorbitant high fees ranging from 50,000 to 10,000 rupees, lacks provision for the deployment of in-building solutions and Cell on Wheels etc. This enormous delay will impede addressing the growing data demands and roll out of futuristic technologies such as 5G, Internet of Things, Virtual Reality and Artificial intelligence etc. While on the other hand, the Centre Government have been sedulous on the development of a robust telecom infrastructure which is evident by the notification of the Right of Way rules, 2016. The policy has to enable features such as no restriction on the location of telecom towers, single window clearance mechanism, defined time-period for approvals, an appointment of Nodal officers, nominal administrative fees and deemed approval etc. extensively supporting the Digital India mission. The draft Karnataka tower policy is not aligned with the Right of Way rules, 2016 issued by centre government. While highlighting the issue, Tilak Raj Dua, Director General, TAIPA said, “The state of Karnataka should align its draft policy with the Right of Way rules issued in November 2016 by the Department of Telecommunication to ensure deployment of critical telecom tower infrastructure. Issues such as call drops, network outage and connectivity gaps

etc. are being faced by the users’ due to the absence of comprehensive mobile tower installation policy. We hope the new government will certainly address these issues and facilitate robust telecom infrastructure in the state.” The industry has also highlighted through a number of representations and submissions to respective authorities for notifying a comprehensive tower policy which addresses the provisioning of seamless telecom infrastructure rollout aligned with the RoW rules, 2016. The visionary programmes of the government such as Digital India and Smart cities are severely impacted due to the absence of uniform comprehensive tower policy aligned with RoW rules dated November 2016 issued by central government. It is worth highlighting that other Indian states such as Kerala, Jharkhand, Haryana, Odisha, Rajasthan and Assam have aligned their tower policies with the central government guidelines.

Further, Dua added “The development of robust telecom infrastructure is the bedrock for state to leapfrog towards Smart and Digital Karnataka. This is because all the transformational reforms such as Digital India, e-governance, Smart Cities and cashless economy etc. depends upon the connectivity provided by telecom infrastructure. Hence, we are sure that State authorities would align their state policy with RoW policy dated November 2016 which will eventually help to realise the dream of Digital India.” Today, Karnataka has more than 29000 mobile towers mounted with more than 1 lakh 22 thousand BTSs serving 64 million wireless telecommunication subscribers. In the near future, Karnataka state needs to double the number of towers and BTS count in order to connect the unconnected, to ensure seamless network connectivity and rollouts future technologies such as 5G, Internet of Things, Virtual Reality and Artificial intelligence etc.

Recently, Reliance Industries’ acquisition of US telecom software firm Radisys highlighted the necessity and revenue opportunities for carriers in nextgen services such as Internet of Things (IoT), a market which is sought to be worth well over $9 billion by 2020 in India. The telcos are keeping in mind that data tariffs have dropped 90% while voice tariff by about 60% in the past couple of years, resulting in gross revenue falling 8% on-year to Rs 2.6 lakh crore in 2017, and are thus shifting focus from core telecom services to emerging technologies and have begun tapping areas such as IoT and Machine-toMachine (M2M) more aggressively said a report by ET. Rohan Dhamija, Head, India and the Middle East for consultancy firm Analysys Mason, said “Telcos will need to go beyond their comfort zone of offering services beyond connectivity which only forms 20 to 25% of the IoT value chain in terms of revenue.” “There’s a need for an immediate focus to be able to participate in this IoT opportunity. From the experience on OTT (over-the-top, or app) wherein, telcos were late in participating, telcos realize that they have to be aggressive and need to invest now rather than wait for the ecosystem to mature,” he added. He further explained that the requirement for investment and the addressable revenue opportunity will increase as telcos move from connectivity to end-toend solution provider. As per consultancy firm Deloitte, the IoT units in India are expected to see a growth of 31 times to reach 1.9 billion in 2020 from its current base of 0.06 billion. In terms of revenue, this opportunity could represent $9 billion by 2020 from $1.3 billion in 2016 — a growth of 700%. Government of India though is aiming to create a $15 billion IoT industry in India by 2020. Counterpoint's senior analyst Hanish Bhatia commented that the key areas in the IoT industry for telcos could be vehicle tracking, smart appliances, smart metering and security & surveillance. "Besides smart cities, telcos also plan to target retail, manufacturing, healthcare

and automotive." RIL’s latest buy will accelerate Reliance Jio's push to build in-house development capabilities for fifth generation (5G) technology and IoT. Its rival and leading telco, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone, on the other hand — as part of their established enterprise businesses — are now offering IoT services. In a major push, Airtel is in advanced talks with US telecom major Verizon for a broad partnership around IoT. It has already initiated several IoT projects at its Manesar network centre, and is establishing a new centre in Bengaluru to work on these technologies. Vodafone, which is in the process of merging operations with Idea Cellular, has tipped IoT to be one of its fastest growing segments and will bring some

global IoT use cases to India, besides launching a narrowband IoT network, mirroring a similar one by Jio. Jio though appears to be the most aggressive of the telcos in India, having already set up a narrowband IoT network which is commercially active in a few cities, including Mumbai. It has now followed it up with the acquisition of Radisys. The company’s vice president, Aayush Bhatnagar, who is currently looking after the software development around domains such as 5G networks, IoT platforms, blockchain and SDN/NFV platforms, will be heading the Radisys team. Dhamija said that Indian telcos see a huge IoT opportunity even in the short to medium term, especially with the arrival of 5G due to low latency and higher capacity benefits. 5G technology, according to analysts, will support billions of connected devices, and digitisation of different sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and smart cities, thereby creating a huge demand for IoT and M2M devices which will be connected by the telco infrastructure.
