The theme of landscapes could very well be completely off the sphere of creative possibilities for some, not knowing how to begin such a quilting or stitching experience. Here’s where I hope we can help with moving you to explore the topic. The content in this issue explores landscapes in an exciting variety of interpretations, methods, skill levels, and needlework categories. Right off the bat, I’ll tell you that the freest form of all the categories in my opinion is rug hooking and punchneedle, they are like colouring a blank page. You create the landscape outline and then fill it in with colourful wool or yarn. The art in this case is getting to create movement in your ‘sky’ and texture in your landscape elements!

She’s right when she explains that the exploring never ends! In quilting, where fabric is manipulated to create landscape elements, we have several methods from which to learn, the question is, with which will you start? Start small and find out if these will be like potato chips for you. In this issue, you’ll find awesome teachers who created their own version of landscape fibre art to give you a good start, only you can imagine how far you’ll take it. Before you know it, you’ll be in the zone, running across the plentiful fields of creativity with fabric and

&

medallions where she used the same landscape outline, but changed the stitches and colours to depict different weather patterns, seasons, and light for each piece. Gosh!

When I imagine what landscape I were to interpret in some form of needlework, I would have a hard time choosing just one, the world is filled with ideas! And are landscape themes in needlework like potato chips, where I couldn’t stop at making just one? I’d have to try it to find out. One possibility is to make a wall quilt depicting three or more landscapes, as Annette Janca and Betty Biberdorf have done with their wall quilt, Canada the Majestic, sort of like getting the indecision out of your system.

thread in hand. As always, stay safe, and stay calm. Cheerfully,

Then there's embroidery where a myriad of stitches on a blank fabric can create the idyllic scene. Judith Marquis reproduced a painting she created decades ago into a smocked piece of landscape art! I’m also fascinated with Marie-Renée Otis’ take on creating landscapes on tiny

Highway 99, best known as the Sea to Sky Highway, begins just outside Vancouver, British Colombia and winds its way to the world-famous Whistler Blackcomb ski resort and beyond. It begins at sea level, and gradually twists and curves its way upwards through breathtaking scenery, as the ocean makes way to the spectacular mountain peaks that seem to reach endlessly to the sky. This quilt, an ode to this beautiful stretch of road, may look difficult to piece due to the on-point setting of the Quarter Log Cabin blocks, but is actually quite easy to make. The trick is in how you sew the rows together - rather than vertical or horizontal rows, you sew them together diagonally, making for a spectacular quilt that looks more complicated than it really is! – Heather

Canada the Majestic Wall Quilt

My inspiration for “Canada the Majestic” came from the

many inspirational landmarks to make a landscape quilt. The west coast has magnificent mountains and breathtaking scenery. The autumn season in Canada has exquisite and vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves on the trees. A very well-known landmark in Canada is Niagara Falls; people come from all over the world to view the spectacular falls. The east coast has the Bay of Fundy, known for its extremely high tides and the eroded “flowerpot”

couldn’t decide what technique I wanted to use to create it. So, I decided to create one with dimensional appliqué and I asked my friend Betty to help me create one using the Photostitch Wizard in the mySewnet™ embroidery software. Each technique interprets the photographs in a different way resulting in two very different wall quilts.

Canada the Majestic Wall Quilt

Fall Foliage Wall Quilt A LESSON IN LETTING GO AND IMPROVISING Fall is my favourite season of all! I realize how fortunate I am to be living in an area where fall allows for the trees to showcase the most beautiful fall foliage colours: from yellow and gold to red, orange, and brown while still having some green. I’m always surprised on how beautiful the country gets in the fall. When I noticed that I had a lot of batik scraps in the fall foliage colours, I thought it was time to make a quilt to remind me all year round the beauty of that season. I had already created many projects piecing strips of fabrics together at a 60-degree angle and wanted to create a new quilt with this design idea as the starting block. As I was creating the quilt, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and try some improv piecing. I was curious and ready to take my quilting experience up a notch. I am thrilled with the results achieved. Making this quilt was a steppingstone for me to begin trusting myself and allowing to let go and improvise more. And I was also happy that my quilt was a semi-finalist at the 2019 AQS QuiltWeek in Fall Paducah and Grand-Rapids. It’s a pleasure to share my quilt making experience in this issue of A Needle Pulling Thread. Keep in mind that the instructions are intended for you to understand my experience in improvising and is meant to inspire you in your very own landscape project experience. – Claire

Abstract Quilted Landscapes 46

A NEEDLE PULLING THREAD

issue 58

While I don’t consider myself an artist in creating a true-to-life landscape, I can create the illusion of a landscape in the form of abstract art. I’ve made several abstract landscapes, each different from the other. In Summer’s Over quilt featured here with the black border reminds me of an aerial view of grain fields on the prairies. The blue and yellow quilt is a typical view of the prairies with endless blue skies, golden wheat fields, and a grain elevator. The one in my step-out pictures is a snowy winter landscape but the process is the same. They are easy to create, no pattern required, and even better – there’s no right or wrong. Landscapes are fluid, and the abstract method makes them easy to assemble. Anything goes – I hope you enjoy my process of creating abstract landscapes. – Elaine

Simple Landscapes with Stitch and Paint A few years ago, I started to dye my own fabrics. Another adventure in surface design: so many colours, so may possibilities. Dyeing fabric using Procion dyes is a lengthy process: preparing the dyes in different colours and the soda ash solution, scour the fabric, the buckets. And then waiting for a few days before washing the fabric to discover the wonderful different colours that the low-water immersion process created. So once I decided that it’s dyeing day, I end up working with 15-20 yards of fabric at once. And that gives me lots of fabric to admire! But … what to do with them afterwards? I started making these simple pieced landscapes: no rulers, no pins. – Ana

Lazy Daisy Socks

SOCK 1 LAZY SOCK 2 DAYS

I may be stretching the idea of landscape, but I did have fun planning my socks for this issue. Landscaping is defined as improving a plot of ground. I decided to improve the landscape of my knitting by trying techniques new to me. My favourite landscape would always be floral and now that I do not have my own flower beds to tend, I take great pleasure in walking around my neighbourhood and viewing the work of others. My socks have rows of cables and flowers. The cables are to represent the pathways between the flowers. For the first time I cabled without a cable needle, embroidered symbols, and used duplicate stitch for the words. I worked outside my comfort zone and at a much slower pace, but I am pleased to say I like the result. – Lorraine 68

Turner’s Sunsets Blanket JMW Turner’s paintings of sunsets are beautiful, and their stunning colours might very well reflect the effects of volcanic activity, according to Smithsonian Magazine. While the background colours differ from one painting to another, as the sun sets over land or water, rosy apricots, yellows, and creamy whites feature in almost all his sunset landscapes.

In this design, simple slipped stitches create interesting texture and colourwork effects. The four-stitch, four-row repeat means that the size can be altered easily, and the design can be personalized with more–or fewer– colours. Here, it is knit with three shades of Universal Yarn Adore, a round, bouncy, easycare, wool and acrylic blend yarn with great stitch definition. – Nancy

This piece was a total experiment, stitched freehand as a challenge to break free of the normal boundaries of graphed smocking pieces/designs. - Judith

The cottage and the lake are where I get most of my inspiration. My husband and I have been coming up to the Kawartha Lakes area for 16 years. Our cottage is our escape from the everyday hustle of living in the suburbs of Toronto. It has also been a wonderful way to raise our daughter and be together as a family. I love to watch the big pine trees sway and the light dance across the water. Being immersed in nature, season after season is simply amazing. The lake has given me so much inspiration and my creative process has been greatly influenced by my time there. The lakes and the beautiful Kawartha landscape inspire many of my mini rugs. - Lynn

Our Last Hike Rug

I discovered punchneedle on a vacation. After years as a maker of quilts, folk art painting, constructing willow interior and exterior home decor pieces, it was the craft of punching that sparked a passion inside me. My desire to share this craft with others has grown. I have always felt that we are all creative beings and only limited by our imaginations. So much of our creative confidence seems to fade as we grow older. I like to draw that creative being out of the students I teach. The jump from beginner to advanced punch artist is only a few projects away! Our Last Hike Rug is a punchneedle rug inspired by one family hike. I wanted to change the background around the three subjects in the rug to represent more of what we saw during the hike. There is always interesting plant life to share with the kids when we go on our hikes. It was a beautiful sunny day and that needed to be represented in the rug, and what better place to display that then off in the distance of a never-ending trail ahead! The Trans Canada Trail has so many colours along the trail, so I needed to include that with different greens and specks of shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. I love to experiment with hand dying so I always have a stash of colours and various values and variegation of those colours. - Carol
