I realize I say this about every new issue I release, but for many reasons I'm so very excited about this issue! Within it are fascinating ways of making quilted portraits. Quilting may be a ton of fun, but even the simplicity of patchwork has its learning curve. Outside of the quilt block is a whole new set of design and quilting skills just waiting to be explored. I encourage you to join our designers in their captivating quilting portrait adventures and give making a quilted portrait a whirl! Some skills to explore here involve a study in colour and shading, curve piecing, and photo editing capabilities. A good attitude will be most useful too.

So, if this issue is about faces, then what's up with the dog coats? Simply explained, what's one of your favourite faces that greets you at home? Nuff said. Here too, a dog coat looks super simple, but it does have its challenges in the fitting. In Cynthia MacDougall's detailed feature, Knitting Fit for a Dog, you'll find all you need to know about measuring and knitting an adorable coat to fit your pooch perfectly. Charles Voth does the same for a crocheted version and if this wasn't enough, check out Cindy O'Malley's knitted plaid version offering a remarkably simple yet effective detail!

And then there’s the Spectrum QAL 2020! Our first ever quilt-a-long on QUILTsocial! This really isn’t your typical QAL at all. Succinctly, 12 quilt block patterns, 3 QAL quilters using 3 fabric collections. This exciting QAL started in September 2020 and will finish end of April 2021 at which time all 3 quilts will be showcased. Pop Art Pet Banner I have a cat named Mitz that I adore. I’m pretty sure she adores me too, though she’s a cat, so you can never really tell. I took this funny photo of Mitz one day – she stuck her face in mine, yet she seemed to be saying, “What YOU lookin’ at?” I thought it would make for a great art quilt project, but I didn’t want a typical fibre art pet portrait, with heavy thread painting. Rather, I wanted something edgy, amusing, and easy to do. My creative mind immediately wanted to create a version of the pop art style. What makes this pop art, well, ‘pop’, is the use of complementary colours – colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel. Pink is a tint of red, and red is opposite green on the colour wheel. The two colours create a dynamic contrast. Just be sure to create balance in your work by using one colour as the dominant colour. You will note in the sample for instance, there is more of the pink than the green. – Heather Photos by Heather McArthur

A love of beautiful clothing and a desire to create unique, one-of-a-kind designs led to a lifelong love affair with fashion, fabric and fiber arts. A sense of whimsical imagination is found in many of Diane's creations. Her mother taught her to sew and ripped out her early sewing mistakes until she eventually developed a passion for sewing. Ten years of 4-H sewing followed by a Bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska with an emphasis in Textiles, Clothing & Design gave her a strong foundation in the area of textile arts. Diane has been privileged to study under renowned fiber artists including Dr. Robert Hillestad, Vince Quevedo and Tim Harding. She has served as a board member for Friends of the Hillestad Gallery, a fiber arts gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Diane's professional background includes managing clothing stores, owning her own fashion accessories business known

ships speaking on the art of being a welldressed woman. Her current position as a National Educator representing Sulky of America is the fulfillment of a dream which offers her the extraordinary opportunity to inspire students with a myriad of sewing techniques, surface design and embellishment ideas. She travels extensively, teaching at the Original Sewing & Quilting Expos as well as presenting Sew Exciting seminars in quilting and fabric stores across the country where her high energy presentations, incredible array of inspiring samples and infectious enthusiasm are met with rave reviews. Diane is a featured artist with her quilted Fiber Bubbles jacket in Sulky's newest book, "Quick & Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky". She lives in Lincoln, Nebraska with her husband, Larry. Both of my daughters have figure skated since they were very young. We have lots of pictures of them skating, but as parents we rarely get to see what goes on behind the scenes at competitions. We were blessed in recent years to have an incredibly talented photographer as one of the girls’ team mates father. At competitions Stephen Bell would place himself behind the scenes and was able to document some magnificent moments on film. He was able to capture the emotions of competition, whether it was of laughter, anxiety, tears, joy and in this case intense focus on what needed to be done to compete.

Madison, my eldest daughter, is a master of mental preparation and this photograph captures her beauty and pensive thought. When I was presented with the opportunity to do a quilting project on Faces, the series of images from competition preparation popped immediately into my mind. The choice was obvious…except that I had to choose which of my two daughter’s portraits to do first. One guess what project is next? – Clodagh

Quilting Faces the Easy Way

For the longest time I was more comfortable using squares and triangle shapes as part of my quilts. With time and the help of great teachers I discovered some techniques were not as difficult and mind blowing as I thought they would be. After each new workshop, I ventured out of my comfort zone to eventually find creative and uncomplicated solutions to quilting challenges. One such technique I never enjoyed working with is hand appliqués. Many of my friends know not to suggest I do hand appliqués. I envy the quilter who has the time and patience to not only hand appliqué a few small pieces, but to do full Baltimore Album quilts. Although time consuming, I love to hand quilt and I enjoy doing English Paper Piecing. So, how do you make a full appliqué quilt when you don’t like hand appliqué? Well in my case, I learned how to do machine appliqué and I liked it. I’ve now made a few quilts using my new skill set, some of which I explained how to do on QUILTsocial.

I love incorporating technology into my sewing. While embroidery software has been around for years, many people shy away because they think the software is complicated and it can be. However, some features make creating your designs so easy, anything is possible. I used the mySewnet™ Embroidery software (Platinum) to create the samples in this article. It's a subscriptionbased software available in different configurations. It's replacing the previous version of embroidery software called Premier+™ 2, which will be phased out but can still be purchased and is supported. I used the PFAFF creative icon™ to stitch the designs. While these embroidery designs look incredibly complicated, they're so easy to create using the PhotoStitch Wizard. You can easily convert a photo of a favourite location, person, or pet into an embroidery design. You have to make choices as you progress through the Wizard, but you don't have to do any hard work! There are five photo styles to choose from when turning a photograph into an embroidery design: Colour, Sepia, Monochrome, Colour Tile, and Linear. Here are some key factors to consider when creating an embroidery file using the PhotoStitch Wizard.

At the most prestigious quilt festivals today, you can see many different examples of portrait art. Why is this genre so popular today? In the recent past, the portrait could be used mainly by artists. It was necessary to be able to draw, know the anatomy of the human face and the basics of colour science. In the modern world of cutting-edge technologies, this is no longer necessary. The portrait genre has become available, and the internet is full of portrait images of different quality, techniques, and styles.

Knitting fit for a dog! Cynthia MacDougall

The original title for this piece was “Practical mathematics for knitting,” but before I’d finished typing it, I could hear you yawning! Actually, I’ve wanted to write an article about math and knitting for a long time. Who would have thought a global pandemic would have created the opportunity! While this piece does include some practical math, my aim here is to share my insights for the dog coat project in this issue. I’m not sure which you’ll find scarier: my ideas or the math! When I was asked to create a dog coat, it took a while to think of a model. I hear dogs barking in my neighborhood all the time, but should “crazy knitting lady” really go knocking on doors at a time like this? I decided to recruit the family two doors down, as they have both girl children and a dog. I approached the parents first, and asked them if, since they were home schooling, could I develop a math problem for the girls that would include measuring, and recording of results? I sweetened the deal with the potential of a photo shoot for this issue and got the green light. Involving children in knitting can be this simple.

Snuggles Sweater

My neighbors dog, Snuggles, is a fashionista when it comes to dog sweaters and coats. During the winter months, Snuggles can be seen sporting a variety of different apparel on her walks. Since I have a fascination with plaids and noticed that Snuggles didn’t own a plaid sweater, I decided to make one for her. My goal was to create a window pane plaid effect without carrying floats in behind. The vertical columns were done with a top stitching technique and crochet hook.

The sweater is knit in the round begining with the turtle neck collar and worked down. The lower chest is worked back and forth using a second set of needles, then rejoined in the round once the leg openings are complete. Snuggles is a small dog, weighing in at 14lbs and 15” in height to the top of her back, but this pattern can be easily tailored for a larger chest or bigger dog by doing more rows and increases before separating for the legs. The belly section can be tapered in by doing decreases after the legs, and the length can be tailored by knitting more rows before starting the short row shaping. – Cindy

The face I chose for my socks is the face of a clock. Time passes slowly when knitting the leg of a plain sock. I find myself looking forward to reaching the heel. Because the heel can be knit apart from the sock, I decided to make it interesting by fitting small designs into the flap. I call it Halftime Relief. For these socks I used embroidery but a textured pattern or a colour motif works even better. I encourage you to take some time and try your own idea. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Lorraine

However, it’s highly addictive. Felting is the process of condensing wool and making it dense so that it forms together and makes a fabric, or in this case so that it condenses into a sculpture. They purchased a vintage industrial felting machine and discovered a new way to use the needles and created a new type of art. A felting needle pushes the wool fibers into a sculpture or picture, and with a lot of stabbing and imagination, you can make anything.
