Wherever I’m planning to go, I plan my knitting first. The idea is to take along a very portable knitting project that doesn’t take much carry-on space. See what Cynthia MacDougall has to say about her knitting and how it played a large part in discovering knitting cruises. Craft cruises are very common today, making these trips the best of both worlds, crafting and vacationing!

Although I've travelled to other destinations around the world, recently my favourite spot seems to be anywhere in the tropics. I can always look forward to lounging on the beach listening to the ocean, making it my favourite destination for the time being.
And then there’s always visiting fabric and yarn stores while on vacation. How much fun is that?! I remember the excitement of visiting Purl Soho and String in New York City on two separate trips. It’s a sense of excitement amplified to a level difficult to explain in words (or maybe you do understand me?). The day will start as an adventure, the subway trip there and walking a few blocks to get there is part of the anticipation. Question. Are we going there before or after lunch?

I miss the place and its majestic Alps, and well, family too.

I've been fortunate to have travelled a lot in my lifetime, travelling since the young age of three. I was born in Uruguay and before my parents settled in Montreal, we travelled by ship back to their home town of Aosta in the Aosta Valley, Italy, to visit family. I summered in Aosta every other year and got to bond with relatives. That is where my fascination for beautiful fabric started. I was introduced to pure wool, cotton, linen, and all forms of embroideries. A cousin had a suit and garment boutique to die for. All textiles and yarn were from Biella and surrouding areas. Yarn mills there are still opened today.
In this issue, projects were inspired by favourite places, roads travelled, and journeys remembered. For some participants, home is the destination, and days of relaxation is paramount. What is your favourite destination?

Several years ago, we purchased a property in Muskoka which quickly became the destination we retreat to on weekends, for summer vacation and even for winter getaways. Muskoka is known for its rugged landscape and natural beauty with windswept pines, rocky shores and freshwater lakes. It’s a sought-after destination for tourists from around the world resulting in a growth in Canadiana themed memorabilia. The theme quickly became the motif for the cottage décor. The first time we saw the True North fabric line by Kate & Bird for Moda, we knew this had to find a place in our lives. The design of the quilt was inspired by the simplicity of the fabric line with the dense whole cloth quilting, giving the appearance of a quilt with a bed runner all in one. – Clodagh

Bargello Wave Bag with optional zipper pocket
I was born in West Pubnico, Nova Scotia, a small French Acadian fishing village. A mother of three grown sons, I now live in Woods Harbour, NS with my husband. Having lived by the Atlantic Ocean all my life, I appreciate the constant change of the ocean waves and the daily rise and fall of the tide. A short 20km away is Cape Sable Island, it has lovely white sand beaches and waves that constantly pound the shoreline. South West Nova Scotia is perfect ocean destination with lots of fishing boats, wharfs and exquisite scenery.
I was asked by a local sewing group if I could design a project introducing the Bargello technique. The Bargello Wave Bag is the perfect project to learn to make a bag, learn to sew in a zipper and to try out the bargello pattern. After making the bag and enjoying the Bargello technique, a full size quilt might be your next project. – Christina

Picture a large hall with rows of spinning wheels up and down the center, each with a spinner wearing a handknit. Now imagine around the outside of the room to see vendors’ tables filled with handdyed yarn, carded fleece, bags of raw fleece and even a cage of angora rabbits. What you’re imagining is The Gathering – an event held every year right here in Port Hope, my town. I chose this event as my destination to celebrate because for me it has become a glorious, extravagant day of shopping and visiting with other fibre enthusiasts. My High Fibre Socks were knit with purchases made at The Gathering. The variegated yarn is Rambouillet wool and mohair created by Alison Brown. The purple is wool and silk hand-dyed at Yvie Knits in Ottawa. The mauve and green are my handspun wool and alpaca fibre from a farm near Lindsay. Georgian Bay cardigan We spend a few weeks each summer at the family cottage in the Thirty Thousand Islands area of Georgian Bay. It’s a beautiful place with wind swept trees, gorgeous views, great channels to canoe or kayak, and excellent sailing. However, it can get a little chilly, particularly at the beginning and end of the summer. This cardigan gives just enough warmth to keep me cosy in the evenings, with a large shawl collar that can be turned up against a windy day. The sleeves are generously sized to allow for layering. This design is knitted circularly whenever possible, using steeks (bridge stitches) to form a cylinder that is cut open for the cardigan front opening. Steeks are also used for the sleeve openings and even the neckline, all to keep you knitting with the right side facing you. The only purl stitches are in the ribbing, top section of the sleeves, bands, and collar. – Denise

I love walking in the warm sand by the ocean, listening to the waves, looking for shells. I find it so soothing, feeling the water on my feet. My face and skin kissed by the sunshine, wind blowing through my hair, watching the sandpipers running up and down the beach. Experiencing the evening sunsets is so breathtaking. Whitecaps on Georgian Bay skill level Intermediate
I live in a small town on the southern shore of Georgian Bay, so my hometown IS a destination! Returning home after some time away is wondrous. You come over a hill on the escarpment, and suddenly there’s the bay in front of you, stretching out to the horizon. Georgian Bay’s moods are mercurial: calm and placid one day with barely a ripple on its glassy, blue surface; rough and angry the next with waves pounding the shoreline. In winter, it can be packed with ice, cold and implacable, but beautiful when it reflects an ethereal turquoise colour.

Inspired by the travel and destination theme for this issue, I used Red Heart Colorscape yarn in the colourway called Rome. The yarn conjured thoughts of Roman columns and archways for me. A note from Jo When the model was framed, she decided the darkest red used in the hammock was too dark, and the lightest tan used in the hat was too light. Gros Morne Dory I was lucky enough to live in Woody Point, Bonne Bay in the middle of Gros Morne National Park for six years as a child. My love for the area has never declined. This design is from a vivid memory from my childhood: a dory with the evergreen mountains in the background accentuated by the flat, red Tablelands Mountains even further back. This spectacular rock is an ancient sea bed, forced by tectonic pressure to meet the sky. - Patty

TIPS Professional Framing When visiting your local framing shop to have a cross stitch framed, enquire about how the cross stitch fabric will be stretched. Pins and/or lacing with thread are the preferred options. Needle Minder Magnetic needle minders are useful tools to ensure you don’t lose your needle or scissors in the couch cushions! However, it’s important the magnets used on the needle minder are in good condition, free from dirt and without chips on the magnet edges. Chips on a magnet can cut your fabric and dirt can mar it permanently.

The Lure of Birchwood From afar, details disappear and only silhouettes remain. Sharp corners of my memory have softened over time. The greater picture of things past remain and become more valuable. From afar, everything is seen differently. Although, I remember everything. The birches and the beauty of the birchwood are one of the natural symbols of Belarusian culture besides the cornflower, the stork and the zubr (European bison). The Belarusians love their forests, especially birchwood, the same way as the British love the ocean, the Arabians love their desert, or the Tibetans love their mountains. My design is a tribute to my memories and love for the splendor of Belarusian nature, which I remember with all my heart. – Iryna

Beaded Designer Flip Flops While vacationing in my home country of Brazil a few years ago, I kept seeing these beautiful beaded flip flops I just ‘needed’ to have. I asked a local craftswoman if she could make some for me, but unfortunately, she was unable to. I was so disappointed, I really wanted some! I decided that if I wanted them that much, and couldn’t get them in Brazil, I had no choice but to learn how to make them myself. When I came back to Canada, I made my first pair, and then another and another and yet some more. I became obsessed. I was so excited when I was asked to share how to make a simple beaded pair of flip flops.
