Diamonds are classified by their cut, clarity, color, and carat. The four C’s are so important because they will determine the price of your diamond. Cut describes how well the

LESLIE AND JASON FIRST MET AT THE VELVET ROOM in downtown Dallas. Neither Leslie nor Jason were really looking for a relationship when Jason first made a move to get to know Leslie a little better. After finally getting her attention after repeatedly “bumping in to her”, Jason asked Leslie if he could buy her a drink. She declined, but he was determined to get her to join him at his table. After taking his number, she contacted him a few weeks later and that’s where their story really began. Their road to forever took a detour when Jason moved to North Carolina to play professional football for the Panthers and Leslie relocated to Washington D.C. After about a year of being apart, Jason invited Leslie to attend a wedding with him and for the next 2 years the two were inseparable. In 2014, they moved together to Tampa and as Jason played for the Buccaneers, their love blossomed. On April 23rd, 2016 Jason asked Leslie to be his wife in front of hundreds of his Western Illinois alumni during a golfing event. Leslie, of course, said “Yes!”

The ceremony and reception were held in the Royal Sonesta Ballroom in a setting truly designed for royalty. The bride wanted a wedding with lots of sparkle and the candle infused ceremony, personalized aisle runner, purple back lighting and candelabras were a true fantasy come true. It was important to the couple to include the tradition of jumping the broom in the ceremony, and they hope that their daughter will continue this tradition when she weds. The newlyweds danced for the first time to Chrisette Michelle’s “A Couple of Forevers”. Personal touches such as a personalized wedding logo, paisley print on the wedding cake as a representation of the couple’s daughter Paisley and elements of roses and pearls on the cake, added to the magic of the day. After the bouquet and garter toss, the bride changed into her second gown of the evening and the Kinfolk Brass Band led the guests in a second line. Nothing can stop love and Leslie and Jason are a couple of forevers that are sure to last a lifetime.

No other wine is associated with momentous occasions in the way that champagne is. When you have gone to great lengths to make sure every single detail of your wedding and reception is perfect and expresses your own personal style, you also want to make sure that the champagne you serve is chosen thoughtfully - they aren’t all the same! Beyond that, you don’t just have to stop at the toast - champagne is a great wine that can be used throughout the reception, from the cocktail hour, through dinner, and even dessert.

WHAT IS CHAMPAGNE? Though often misunderstood as a generic term for any sparkling wine, the name champagne is only applied to wines from a specific region in France. Because of the unique soil and climate of the Champagne region, as well as the generations of expertise in the region that perfected the methods of making champagne, no other sparkling wine can provide the unique style and genuine quality. Prosecco, cava, and domestic sparkling

wine all have great producers, and their own special qualities. However, if you want to provide the very best to your friends and family, offer them a true champagne from talented French winemakers.

HOW IS CHAMPAGNE MADE? Though most champagne is a white wine, it is typically a blend of both white and red grapes;


Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. They are all pressed in a manner to prevent coloration from the red grapes, and then made into wine the same as a still wine would be. After that, two important and unique things occur. The winemakers first blend these wines from different grapes together, including reserve wines from previous vintages to add complexity. Next, this blend is bottled with an extra bit of yeast and sugar, the addition of which causes a second fermentation in the bottle. Because of this second fermentation in a closed bottle, the carbon dioxide that is a product of fermentation is trapped in the wine - and we have bubbles!

J LASSALLE “SPECIAL CLUB” BRUT 2007 - AGED PARMESAN REGGIANO, GRUYERE, MELBA TOAST, AND A PLUMPASTE The extended aging of this vintage champagne develops a complexity and maturity that goes perfectly with an aged cheese. Though delicious on its own, it can also pair with richer entrees or pastry-based desserts.

WHAT STYLES OF CHAMPAGNE ARE THERE? The vast majority of champagne produced is termed non-vintage or “assemblage” (blend). As described above, these wines are blends of multiple grapes and wines from multiple years. Two other styles are made with only one type of grape, referred to as Blanc de Blancs if made from purely Chardonnay and Blanc de Noirs if made from purely the red grapes (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier). These wines provide flavors that we find in still wines made purely with white or red grapes, rather than the full blend of flavors we get in an assemblage style. Rose champagne is most commonly made by adding a small amount of still red wine, made from the Pinot, into the blend of white wines in order to give it the pink color and additional flavors. Vintage champagnes are very special - they may be a blend of the different grapes, but they only contain wine from one single year, and are only produced in the finest years and often in much smaller quantity. Each of these styles can also be made with varying levels of sweetness. Most champagne is of the Brut style, which is dry. Others can range from bone dry (Extra Brut or Brut Nature) to overtly sweet (Demi-Sec). Depending on the specific blends of grapes and years, the wines look and taste very different. The flavors of the seared scallop and buttery maque choux are tied together by the elegant acidity of the wine. There is no better style of champagne to have with oysters on the half shell.

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT PAIRING THESE VARIOUS STYLES OF CHAMPAGNE? Champagne, as a class, is one of the most versatile, food-friendly wines. While it can be said that there’s a champagne for every food, it does not follow that all styles of champagne will be equally well-paired with all foods. Furthermore, while some champagnes are great on their own as an aperitif, some styles are considered “gastronomic” and need food to be best appreciated. The bubbles themselves play into this, with younger wines being more effervescent and perhaps best reserved for less delicate dishes. Champagne’s relatively high acidity makes it both refreshing on it’s own and accentuates the flavors and textures of fried or otherwise rich foods. And, as with still wines, there is a consideration of how the wine was made (the blend of grapes, stainless steel vs oak barrels, level of sweetness, age of the wine, etc) that also factor into which wine works best with which food. There are, however, some basic ideas that can help guide you to a wine you will find enjoyable no matter what part of the celebration you choose. n “Classic” assemblage - the most versatile, can be used with aperitifs, main dishes, and certain desserts. n Blanc de Blancs - younger and more mineral/acidic, perfect with seafood (oysters, ceviche); older or richer styles, great with poultry, cream sauces, mushrooms. n Blanc de Noirs - anything you’d typically pair Pinot with, including charcuterie and game meats. n Rose - extremely versatile given the different production methods, -lighter styles that are fruit-forward pair with aperitifs and fruit-based desserts -fuller-bodied wines are superb with duck and bbq, drinking sometimes like a lighter-bodied red wine n Vintage - back to richer dishes as the flavors advance and become more oxidized. Older champagnes can pair very well with aged cheeses and even some desserts (pastry) n Demi-Sec/Sec - very broad ranges of sweetness, some which could work with spicy food similar to a riesling and others that demand desserts to match up to the prominent sweetness.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SERVE CHAMPAGNE? While the champagne flute is a traditional and beautiful way to enjoy the wine during your festivities, you should be open to other styles of glasses too. This is especially important if you’ll be serving champagne with food. In that case, opt for a white wine glass to let the champagne really open up and show all of the complex aromas and flavors it has to offer at the table.

HOW DO I GO ABOUT CHOOSING? New Orleans is an exciting place right now in terms of champagne selection. Though the most well-known champagnes are from very large producers, there has lately been a resurgence of champagnes made by smaller winemakers, the “growerproducers”. While the larger brands can be found at any grocery store, you will find an excellent selection of high quality wines from these smaller producers at wine shops across the city. Many new producers are in the market now, and oftentimes you can get high quality, smaller-production wines for less than you spend on a big-name brand at a grocery store. And for your special occasion, you want to remember it with a wine that isn’t a generic everyday find. If you have a preferred style, go to your favorite local wine shop and ask the staff there to make some recommendations for you. Once they know what you like, how you’ll be incorporating it into your celebration, and what your budget is, they can help you narrow in on just the right wine.

AS WITH MANY MODERN ROMANCES, Holly and Steven’s love story began online. Holly had never imagined that she would meet her best friend and husband through online dating, but sometimes love comes through where you least expect it. When Steven proposed it was perfect- Holly had mentioned that she wanted their engagement to be private, for just the two of them, and Steven made her dream come true. With champagne provided by his mother, flowers from her mother and the surprise display created by Steven’s sister and brother-in-law, Steven pulled off the perfect engagement at home. The evening continued with dinner at Omni Royal Orleans- the hotel where the couple would eventually marry, and a celebratory brunch the next day with friends and family. From beginning to end, the proposal was a dream. With a proposal like that, the wedding had a lot to live up to and it certainly

did! Because Steven isn’t from New Orleans, and half of the wedding guests would be coming into town for the wedding, the couple wanted to add some special New Orleans touches to the affair. Some memorable additions included snowballs and a second line parade that led guests out into the streets of the French Quarter. The couple decided to buck tradition and instead of a typical bouquet toss, Holly gave her bouquet to the couple in attendance that was married the longest. They thought it would be special to honor a beautiful and successful marriage at the beginning of their own union. Other traditions that made the day special were the groom’s attire which was chosen to mimic what his grandfather wore at his own wedding and the ring bearer’s pillow made from the mother of the bride’s wedding dress. It was the intimate details, from start to finish, that made Holly and Steven’s wedding a personal and wonderful first step on their path to forever.

THEY SAY THAT SOME LOVE STORIES ARE meant to be, and that is certainly the case in Rayne and Brunson’s romance. The couple met in high school but, as the old story goes, they lost touch. Thanks to a little bit of luck and magic (and Facebook!) they reconnected years later and their love bloomed. After 6 years of dating, Brunson popped the question in front of his entire family at a crawfish boil at his family’s camp. Of course, Rayne couldn’t wait to say “Yes!” The engagement was a complete surprise, and as Rayne describes it, “Absolutely perfect!” Like the couple themselves, the wedding was unique and memorable. The bride says that her favorite part of her wedding day was the first dances that they chose. Rayne and Brunson danced to Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” and in true fashion, they sang the song at the top of their lungs and

really “rocked out”. The father/daughter dance was especially sentimental as Rayne and her father danced to the Disney classic “When You Wish Upon a Star”, a perfect choice, because Rayne had spent much of her childhood at Disney World. This was a moment of the reception that her family would cherish forever. When it came time for the mother/son dance, Brunson’s mother had no idea what to expect, as she had been kept in the dark about their song so that it could be a surprise. When Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild” came on, Brunson and his mom just went for it and rocked it! Rayne says that the dance was so perfect that it almost looked choreographed. From a chance meeting in high school to an enchanted evening shared with family and friends, Rayne and Brunson began their forever with a mix of music, dancing, laughter and love.

IT IS OFTEN SAID, “ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD.” Unless it is the wedding day of Mark Favre and Jason Picus, who decked out the Riverview Ballroom of the New Orleans Marriott in copious amounts of gold — black and gold, to be precise, for their New Orleans Saints–themed wedding. There was a hint of pink, too; their favorite color. This was a dream wedding come true for Favre and Picus, the ecstatic winners of a contest that netted them a free wedding in the hotel’s opulent 41st-floor ballroom with a ridiculous view of the French Quarter and beyond. A hotel ballroom bash wasn’t originally in the cards. Mark and Jason, who met on OkCupid and swore it was “love at first blind date,” were determined to marry in the Big Easy, where Jason is a proud fifth-generation New Orleanian. Their only obstacle crumbled when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. Not long after, while in their pajamas and walking the dogs late one night, Jason spontaneously dropped to one knee under their favorite neighborhood tree and proposed. “It wasn’t planned. I didn’t have a ring; I had a moment of clarity. I looked at Mark, and I knew I couldn’t live without him,” explains Jason. “It was a perfect moment,” he adds. They planned to make their union official with a backyard celebration — family, good friends, homemade gumbo and a couple of kegs. But then they decided to share their love story on Instagram as part of the New Orleans Marriott’s #MarryMeNOLA Contest, dreaming of a wedding prize

valued at $42,000 — a glitzy affair that would offer killer views from the hotel’s gorgeously renovated ballroom. “I’m almost sad this contest is coming to an end,” wrote Jason in his last Instagram post. “The love and support we have received from our friends and family, nominating us and trying to help us win this wedding, will be something I carry with me for the rest of my life.” It may have been that last post that sealed the deal, as Jason and Mark’s story ultimately captured the hearts of the judging team that selected them from among 312 entries as the winners. And if New Orleans is all about sharing the love, what better way to complete Mark and Jason’s love story than with a true NOLA wedding? “Mark and Jason were a pleasure to work with,” says Lisa Pickett, the hotel’s event planner who helped them bring their wedding dreams to life. “It was so meaningful to them that they could get married in New Orleans since they love this city so much.” With the help of Lisa and the New Orleans Marriott catering team, the couple’s 200 guests were treated to deliciously authentic cuisine, a tearinducing first dance to Louis Armstrong’s La Vie en Rose, a love-themed flash mob planned by Jason’s sister, and a night of dancing to the couple’s favorite tunes by Louis Prima, Billy Holiday, Aretha Franklin and Beyoncé, culminating in a classic New Orleans–style second line. And just when it couldn’t get more magical, an unplanned but magnificently well-timed fireworks display erupted over the Mississippi River, thanks to a pyrotechnic conference that happened to be in town that weekend.

“A wedding invitation sets the tone for the big day, providing guests with a hint of what’s to come.” That’s what designer Alexa Pulitzer tells potential clients, noting that all wedding invitations – even the traditional – portray personal touches. Part of her job is interpreting those and creating a one-of-a-kind and personal design.

“Give me something of you … Let’s dig a little deeper,” Pulitzer tells clients. “I’m very direct. I’ll say, ‘Are you unique? Let’s make this unique.’” Pulitzer is an internationally-known designer, a classically-trained artist who draws inspiration from music, architecture, art and her native New Orleans. Her detailed drawings, often featuring local flora and fauna, are iconic. Words like whimsical, classic and elegant are often used to describe her work. Pulitzer’s best-known work may be “King Gator,” which shows the state’s reptile wearing an majestic crown. The king has graced magnificent wedding invitations, sometimes even with a queen, since Pulitzer launched her eponymous company in 1995. After Hurricane Katrina, Pulitzer donated her time and talent to create a new logo for the Office of Recovery & Development. More recently, Pulitzer was chosen to create a logo for New Orleans’ 300th anniversary celebration in 2018. Pulitzer has created wedding invitations for people all over the world. Most consultations are by phone, she says, although some brides-to-be meet with her in person in her atelier, sometimes with their mothers in tow. (Future husbands rarely participate in these consultations, Pulitzer says.) “One of the best things about running my own company is I do not have to ask anyone else’s opinion. I trust my gut,” Pulitzer says. The artist recommends that couples commence the invitation creation process at least four to six months before their big day. does printing and calligraphy. The goal is to have a memorable invitation and to be a gracious host who allows guests a full six weeks to clear their calendars. Pulitzer tells her clients to avoid letting social media platforms be their design guide and to trust her to guide them. She doesn’t follow or respond to trends. In fact, she says “I create trends.” “I don’t look at what anybody else creates,” she says. “I’m a leader. I trust my intuition and have an elevated taste level.” As 2017 draws to a close, Pulitzer notes that brides-to-be seeking inspiration from big brand wedding magazines or social media were leaning towards foil printing in metallic inks. While foil printing has a youthful pop, it’s a printing process that Pulitzer strays from. “My art is incredibly detailed, so I prefer to engrave (an old-world printing technique),” she says. When engraved, “metallic ink such as rose-gold or gold are opulent, majestic and exude elegance.” One of the first things Pulitzer asks couples to keep in mind is their budgets. After hearing a couple’s ideas, she will offer 64 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

prices and then create two to three options within their price range. (She admits being partial to certain design elements, like printing in a unique blue/gray/green hue called Anthracite.) “Brides put so much pressure on themselves to create a memorable day that they lose track of what they’re spending on their wedding. I pride myself on explaining the nuances and price points of various printing techniques that I offer and confirm that my art will look wonderful no matter how we print. I’ll make sure of that,” Pulitzer says. “I want people to take pride in what I’ve created for them. I want them to know they’re in trusting, capable hands.” And while invitations do set the tone for the wedding, not every high-end event needs to be heralded with the thickest card stock with beveled edges and custom envelope liners. “Invitations that don’t have all those elegant and costly bells and whistles can also have soul and uniqueness that are just as thrilling for the guest,” Pulitzer adds. Many clients want Pulitzer to create a cypher (a two letter monogram) - usually using the first initial of each of the couple’s


first names. No two are alike. “I start with a fresh white page every time I start a project” she says. Once Pulitzer has created a couple’s custom design, she will make unique alterations for every object on which her art will appear. By adding adornment such as wreathes, decorative frames, flowers, and even antlers, the couple's cypher will appear different on their wedding invitation than the one featured on their programs and that same design will be slightly different from the cypher on their napkins, place cards and thank you notes; all due to the individual attention Alexa gives to each project she creates. “I actually create every piece,” she says. “It’s very satisfying to finish creative projects on a daily basis.” In many ways, New Orleans is critical to her work and all of Pulitzer’s branded products are printed locally. She takes great pride in producing her products in New Orleans whereas her competition manufactures in China. While she’s lived and worked for textile companies in Italy and France, she chose to return to her native New Orleans to build her business. When asked to name her favorite thing about the city, she immediately ticked off a list: Preservation Hall, The Music Box, marching bands in Mardi Gras parades. “My favorite thing about New Orleans is the music and its creative populous,” she eventually decided. “New Orleanians are gregarious, outgoing, spirited and they say hello to everyone – no matter their background. I surround myself with passionate creative types who encourage and nourish my creativity - I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.”

AS WITH MANY LOVE STORIES, Meghan and David started off as friends. The couple met in high school and were friends throughout college. It got to a point where Meghan realized she wanted to spend all of her time with David and they fell in love. The proposal was like a modern day fairytale. On a last minute trip to Disney World, David kept trying to get Meghan to join him at the light parade at Magic Kingdom. Meghan thought this was out of character for David, but she decided to go along with him, mainly because she was eager to see her boyfriend of 6 years get excited about a Disney parade. It had been a long day of walking around Disney and Meghan was tired, so she was caught completely off guard when David presented her with a ring just as the fireworks illuminated the sky over Magic Kingdom. Of course, she said “yes!” and thus began their own happily ever after. Meghan loves to read and spent much of her childhood in libraries reading books about faraway lands, so the couple wanted to incorporate a library and book theme into their special day. Their engagement photos were taken at The Latter Branch Public Library and save the dates were sent out

on library card postcards. Meghan and David spent the months leading up to the wedding collecting items that would fit into their “literary” theme and some special touches included a typewriter, library card drawers, hardback books and framed literary quotes. Wedding guests were asked to fill out a library card with marriage advice for the couple. The ceremony took place at The Camelia Garden at New Orleans City Park and a flower theme was also incorporated into the wedding in the form of flower crowns for the bridesmaids, floral pillars for the ceremony and a “flower ceremony” where the bridal party and family each placed a single bloom in a vase to create a new, full arrangement that symbolized the interrelationship of the couple’s family and friends. Meghan’s godfather and uncle, Michael Merrell, officiated the ceremony and did “everything in his power to make our day special” says Meghan. He even turned their wedding script into a book as a keepsake for the couple! From a friendship that blossomed into true love, Meghan and David’s romance is a beautifully written love story for the ages.

JESSE AND KENDAL’S LOVE BEGAN IN ATLANTA where they were attending college. Although they were at separate colleges, their paths crossed and after discovering that they were both from Louisiana, shared mutual friends and were members of the same organizations, they began spending more time together. After a few weeks studying, watching sports, and attending church together, they decided to make it “official” and began dating. Kendal was working in North Carolina at the time, but that didn’t stop him from planning the perfect proposal. With a ring from Ken and Dana Designs in New York City and a little help from Dickie Brennan himself, Kendal knew that proposing at Palace Café, a place that was special to Jesse, was the only possible choice. The magic moment took place at the private wine cellar upstairs where Jesse had been told by her parents that they were attending a private function. To her complete surprise, Kendal walked in as Jesse’s favorite music played on acoustic guitar, dropped to one knee and asked Jesse to marry him. Kendal’s proposal was made complete with a touching

speech about the years they had shared together and the years yet to come. Jesse was so delighted and happy that all she could do was shout “I’m getting married!” as she and Kendal embraced. The couple wed at Holy Name of Jesus Church and their reception was at Audubon Tea Room. One of the crowd favorites was when Jesse and her father did a choreographed dance to Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic”. The dance showed off the fun relationship that she and her father, a two-time kidney transplant recipient, share. The couple says the most special part of their wedding was when they exchanged their own written vows in front of their 400 guests and the last 30 minutes of the reception when Keantay Brass Band and Mardi Gras Indians lead the guests in a second line in celebration of the newlyweds. The couple is grateful for the health of Jesse’s father and that he was such an important part of their special day. Jesse and Kendal are a perfect match and sharing their wedding day with those who love them most is a memory they will cherish forever.

CASCADE A cascade bouquet, also called a “shower” bouquet, is very formal and the most traditional bridal bouquet. Like a waterfall, this bouquet flows and is designed to gently cascade downward. This bouquet is often designed with larger flowers at the top, using smaller blooms as it begins to taper down and land gracefully over the bride’s hands. COMPOSITE If you’re looking for a truly unique look in your wedding flowers, and you can’t find a particular variety of flower that appeals to you, a composite bouquet might be the perfect choice. This intricate creation is composed by taking individual petals from flowers (such as amaryllis, roses, or lilies), wiring them together on a single stem and creating the look of one giant bloom. HAND-TIED For this more relaxed style of bouquet, a variety of blooms that tie in with the wedding theme are wired or loosely gathered together and tied with a satin ribbon or a combination of ribbon and lace.

NOSEGAY A combination of simple style and elegance, the nosegay is a densely packed mound of flowers and greenery. When choosing flowers for a nosegay, compact blooms such as roses, tulips, peonies, hydrangeas, calla lilies, and ranunculus work best. PAGEANT The pageant bouquet, also known as a “presentation” bouquet (think of the flowers presented to Miss America when she is crowned), is a bunch of long-stemmed flowers that the bride carries cradled in her arms. POMANDER A less-traditional bouquet, the pomander is a small, compact bloom-covered ball that is usually four to six inches in diameter, and then suspended from a ribbon. POSY Similar to the nosegay but smaller in size, the posy bouquet is perfect for a petite bride with delicate hands, or for a bridesmaid’s bouquet. ROUND The classic round bridal bouquet is usually compiled of large flowers that are loosely arranged.

CLAIRE AND ANDREW’S LOVE STORY BEGAN with a chance meeting at a Halloween party in college. As soon as Andrew saw Claire, he knew that his life was about to change forever. They began talking and spent the evening getting to know each other, almost forgetting that there were other people at the party. At the end of the evening, Andrew walked Claire home and they parted with the promise to see each other again. As they said good night, Claire smiled and Andrew knew that her smile was all that he would ever need. After pursuing Claire for a few months, the couple shared a New Year’s Eve kiss as the Fleur de Lis dropped in Jackson Square and both of them knew that this love was going to last for an eternity. Claire and Andrew are both designers and have a Master’s in Landscape Architecture and a professional degree in Architecture respectively, so it made sense that they were eager to add personal design flair to every detail of their special day. The invitations, thank you cards, programs and stationery were all hand-drawn by the groom. Claire then added her own flourishes and text digitally. From the start, this couple worked as a team to make their day

as special and unique as they are. The couple exchanged vows in Jackson Square at the site of where their love began- the history and the architecture of the Square reflects the couple’s love for design and each other. The wedding was officiated by Dr. John Brannon, the same pastor who married Claire’s parents and the reception took place at the Elms Mansion where Andrew’s parents met 30 years prior. Tying the past with the present was a sentimental detail that made the couple’s wedding special and intimate. The highlight of the wedding for Claire and Andrew was their second line from Jackson Square to Canal Street. The newly married couple danced, kissed and laughed all the way to privately chartered streetcars that whisked the couple and their guests to their reception at The Elms Mansion. From beginning to end, Claire and Andrew’s romance and wedding was perfectly designed and is undoubtedly built to last a lifetime.

DESHAWNNA AND ERICK HITCHENS SR. have actually been married for 10 years. They got married young and wanted to celebrate sharing a decade of love and commitment to each other with a vow renewal. Deshawnna says that Erick and her best friends Shamelle and Ashley planned a surprise reproposal at Deshawnna’s “Garden of Bliss” bridal shower. The bride thought that she was only going to be enjoying a special shower with family and friends and then the day took a turn. It had been a lovely brunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard in Baton Rouge when the time came for Deshawnna to take pictures with her guests. When it came time for her to take the last picture with her best friend, her favorite song began to play. Surprised, she turned around to see her love, Erick, down on one knee with an upgraded diamond ring, asking her to be his bride for a second time.

The wedding was held at the Lyceum Ballroom, a venue that the couple picked for its elegance and charm. It was important to include Erick’s late mother in the ceremony so the couple made the decision to acknowledge her with a photo placed on the first seat on the groom’s side so that she would be a part of their day. They were also excited to share the day with their children. During the ceremony, Deshawnna and Erick exchanged their own written vows to each other, expressing their love as they had 10 years prior. At the reception, the bride and groom danced to New Edition’s “Can You Stand the Rain”, the groom’s favorite song. Deshawnna and Erick prove that when you have true love, you can get through anything because you have each other. Here’s to 10 years and a lifetime to go!

WHEN BRANDON GAYNOR DROPPED TO ONE KNEE during an early morning walk in the Hamptons, his girlfriend, Alex May-Sealey, wasn’t surprised or particularly excited. It wasn’t the first time her boyfriend of three years had tried to trick her into thinking he was asking her to marry him. And earlier in their stroll, Brandon had seemingly ignored Alex when she’d commented that this beach would be the perfect place to propose. So she asked him to stand up. Instead, he offered her a diamond ring. “It was real!” Alex says. The couple’s romance had begun the Hamptons years earlier, when this self-proclaimed Southern Belle and this Yankee from New York were part of a group sharing a summer rental in East Hampton. (One of Alex’s friends and Brandon’s roommate were dating after meeting on a chance plane ride, another love story that deserves to be told some day.) Alex and Brandon immediately hit it off — “We became best friends,” Alex says. Soon she was making the six-hour train ride from her home in Washington DC to the Long Island resort town to see Brandon “and, of course, to hang out at the beach.” By summer’s end, they were more than friends. With Alex still in the nation’s capital and Brandon in New York, they began a long-distance relationship.

“For two years, we alternated weekend traveling to each other, taking 2 a.m. trains on Mondays to make it back in time for work,” she says. Almost a year after their engagement, in June 2017, Alex, Brandon and more than 220 of their nearest and dearest gathered in New Orleans. The couple was eager to show off Alex’s home state to the many out-of-town guests who had never visited before. They created a wedding hashtag — #geauxinggaynor — which undoubtedly confused some guests at first sight. They encouraged visitors to take a Southern cooking class, explore the bayou and visit a plantation. On the night before the wedding, Alex and Brandon gave a lesson in Carnival, renting a Bourbon Street balcony where guests enjoyed a Haydel’s Bakery king cake while throwing more than 350 pounds of beads to the ever-changing crowd below. The next day, after the wedding reception at Marché, the bride and groom handed out masks and led a second-line to Pat O’Brien’s for an after-party. “We wanted to provide a true experience all the way from the views to the music to the food,” Alex says. “It was great to see that come together with the ones we love.”

SO YOUR BIG DAY IS SIX MONTHS AWAY, MOST OF THE REALLY BIG ITEMS ON THE LIST ARE done and now its time to think about YOU! (You are a bride, isn’t it all about you anyway?) Your wedding day is your time to shine and you want to be at your very best. Wedding dress, hair, and makeup must be flawless but the skin under the flawless makeup has to be perfect as well. Here is your countdown for getting your skin in picture perfect shape before the big day: WATER: You either love it or you hate it but it’s hard to dispute

its benefits. I have a friend who drank a gallon every day during his modeling career and he never had a single blemish, EVER. A gallon of water a day might be a bit hard to swallow especially when you add in all those trips to the ladies room, however, if you can drink 6-8 glasses a day, the difference will be clear. Water flushes out impurities in your entire body and it is one of your best defenses against skin imperfections that always pop up at the wrong time. Add a lemon slice to your water and you’ve got a natural diuretic, add an orange slice for taste, or add 102 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

a cucumber slice for a spa experience. Dressed up or dressed down, water is a lifesaver. If you are the type who retains water, drink more to bust through that (trust me you’ll know when it happens). Six months out, step up your water intake and find the amount that is right for you. SKIN CARE: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, find a skin

care routine that works for you and stick to it. Six months out is a good time to look into that. Make sure it is appropriate for your skin type and use it as instructed. Check your skin weekly


WASH YOUR FACE BEFORE BED: We’ve all

skipped it, some more than others, but six months out make the commitment to do this every night before your wedding no matter how hard it is. Nighttime is the time that your skin renews and repairs itself. Give your skin the tools to do that by starting with a clean face. They say that every night you fall asleep with your makeup on ages you by 13 days. I don’t know if that’s true, but who wants to take the chance? TAKE CARE OF THE SKIN ON YOUR BODY: Five

months out is a good time to step up your skin care for the rest of your body. Many brides are wearing strapless and backless gowns these days so it is important to make sure that the skin on your neck, chest, and back is looking awesome. Unfortunately, with our hot climate, heat rashes are common and sometimes breakouts on the back can be inconvenient and even painful. There are great body washes on the market that can help with that but you may need to seek the care of a dermatologist. Five months out gives you plenty of time to do that. Another great tip for body care is to exfoliate at least twice a week. Get a scrub with some grit to it and exfoliate your whole body. We all have dead skin cells that need to be removed and a good scrub or a loofah will do that. Isn’t it glamorous to talk about dead skin? Not really, it’s got to go!

microdermabrasion done or get a kit and do it yourself. I recommend two months out just in case your skin is slow to recover. Microdermabrasion is a heavy exfoliant that really gets into the pores to clean out any impurities. Another reason to do this 60 days out is just in case there is any kind of reaction; if there is, you’d have plenty of time to clear it up. STICK TO THE ROUTINE: 30 days before the

wedding is a busy time and a critical time for your skin. Stick to whatever routine you have developed that is working for you. This is not the time to try new things. If your skin doesn’t like something you try, you might not have time to really get it cleared up before the wedding. Also, the idea that chocolate makes you break out is a myth that was busted years ago, however, if you know of a food or even a beverage that makes you breakout, steer clear 30 days before the wedding. Why take chances if you don’t have to? ALCOHOL: We do love to let the good times

roll here in New Orleans but alcohol can really do a number on the skin. Alcohol is very dehydrating to the skin and that is not what you want just before your wedding. Have a glass of water between drinks or have your drinks watered down. THE BIG DAY IS FINALLY HERE: Get a good night’s sleep the

night before your wedding. Try to relax as much as you can. Don’t forget to drink your water the day before and even while you are getting ready. Make sure to follow your skin care routine before your makeup goes on and don’t forget about moisturizing your neck and chest.

TAN LINES: Tanning isn’t good for the skin on the face or the body. Period. However, I am aware that many women are still tanning in the tanning bed or in the sun. Please be aware of your tan lines for your wedding. That bachelorette weekend was great but your tanned (or even burned) skin with a clear outline of your bikini straps will not do you any favors in your strapless or off-the-shoulder dress. Be careful out there.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR NECK AND CHEST: Sunscreen on the neck and chest is a must. You can lie about your age all day long but your neck and chest will tell the truth. A gorgeous dress loses a lot with a dry, wrinkled décolleté. Keep that area moisturized day and night (you’ll thank me later). Start being vigilant about

DREW AND JOSEPHINA’S LOVE STORY BEGAN over the phone as a long distance romance. He was in New Orleans and she was in Houston and every day they would talk for hours getting to know each other. One day, Drew bought Josephina a plane ticket to New Orleans so that she could come and visit him, and the rest is history. The couple’s first date was at Nottoway Plantation and, although they never said it out loud at the time, they both felt a connection to the place and they knew that this was the spot where they would eventually marry. As the weekend continued, the couple attended a wedding and it was here that Drew first told Josephina that he loved her. After dating for a while, Drew surprised Josephina with a weekend getaway to Nottoway Plantation- the site of their first date. It was here that Drew got down on one knee and asked Josephina if she would marry him. It wasn’t until they were sipping mimosas the next morning on the porch that they both revealed that they knew that Nottoway Plantation would be the place where they would be married.

The wedding promised to be as special as the couple themselves. The bride’s mother designed the wedding’s centerpiece and the bride danced with her father to the Bee Gee’s song “Staying Alive”, a song that holds special significance to them, as it was the song that they had danced to at elementary school father-daughter dances. Dancing to this song at the wedding was a full circle moment for Josephina and her father. The highlight of the evening came at the end when Josephina and her mother danced to Dido’s “Thank You”. As a child, her mother told her the song was a “perfect depiction of how she feels towards me”, shares Josephina. Being able to share this moment with her mother was the perfect end to an already memorable day. Josephina says that with all the stress leading up to the wedding day, the best part was looking at Drew and all of those who had come out to celebrate with them and realizing that they were loved and that their future together was just beginning.

NOW: For those who have never heard of this before, what exactly *is* a First Look? TM: A First Look is a nontraditional approach to seeing each other before the actual wedding ceremony, but is quickly becoming a tradition that photographers are praising…and for good reason! NOW: What are the benefits of doing a First Look? TM: Where do I start?! The benefits are huge! First and foremost, you both get to see each other before the ceremony and share your feelings together in private. You also get to put all of the nerves at bay…and quickly. You won’t have to wait hours to see each other and then when you do, not be able to say anything. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard how relaxed my couples feel after seeing each other. If you think about it this way… 116 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

if you opt out of a First Look, when do you have a moment together quietly during the remainder of the day? Second, you have more time for photos. When I say photos, I mean your actual wedding portraits as husband and wife that you will cover your walls with. If you don’t take any photos together until after the ceremony, the schedule is much more strict, as most churches allow only 15 minutes on average for photos. I know it may seem like you have a lot of time for photographs after the ceremony, but once you start organizing the different family and wedding party shots there is barely any time left to get photos of the two of you. How ironic is that? It is your wedding but you have the least amount of time for your photos. First Looks can solve that problem! Third, you get to enjoy yourself… yes…you read that right. After the ceremony is finished, it is time to party! I always suggest taking a few photos of the two of you at your ceremony location but that’s it! Everything else is already done so you can get to the reception. How sweet is that?! Fourth, you will have the best light possible. Not only will you be able to enjoy every second of your reception because photos are completed before, but you will also have a better chance of getting those dreamy portraits during the ideal time of day: the “golden hour”. A lot of church weddings take place in the evening, so once you are married it is typically dark outside. Having a First Look will get you those gorgeous portraits you always see in your Instagram feed. NOW: Since we've covered the pros, what are the cons? TM: The biggest concern with deciding to participate in a First Look is timing. A first look will mean your entire timeline the day of the wedding will be earlier. This includes hair, makeup, florist arrival,


and even needing to extend your limo company for a longer period of time to take you to an extra location (if you are not doing your portraits at the prep or ceremony location). Not every couple has an overly emotional reaction during a First Look. You have to know yourselves and choose based on that. It is a seriously intimate moment (along with two photographers and possibly two videographers looming in the background) so make sure both of you are okay with that. NOW: How much time do you suggest devoting to the First Look? TM: The average time I suggest for a First Look is 1.5 hours. NOW: Where do you suggest doing the First Look? TM: I do think it is best to have your

First Look at your prep location, especially if you are planning to go to a separate location for your formal portraits. It gives your photographer bonus time to capture the two of you together on the ride to your portrait location. Score! NOW: What can you do to get the best possible images of the First Look? TM: The best thing to do is to stay in communication with your photographer in regards to your prep location. They will know what venues would be ideal for a First Look. Getting ready in the same location is also very helpful so your transportation company doesn’t need to make two trips from two different places. NOW: What was the most amazing First Look you've ever photographed? What made it so special? TM: My favorite memory from a First

Look was a few years ago. The wedding was at the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge and their staircase made quite the setting for a First Look. The staircase was so grand with a huge American flag hung in the background. The groom was an army ranger and I seriously did not think he was going to cry. He was always so poised and calm. Well, he literally broke down when he turned around and saw his bride. It was the sweetest thing I've ever seen! She brushed the tears from his face and gave him a big kiss and I lost it...the tears came! However, I can honestly say that every First Look I have photographed has been amazing. I get goose bumps every time and I love seeing my couples grinning from ear to ear when they see each other. It is beautiful.

MANY COUPLES HAVE “IT WAS MEANT TO BE” STORIES, detailing their smooth course to happiness. They meet in grade school, find love in high school and then move into adulthood together as one, an inseparable unit, with nary a hitch. This is not one of those stories. April Eiswirth and Norman Vallette attended schools together from grades K through 12 but they barely spoke. Almost a decade after their high school graduation, both were again living in New Orleans but a miscommunication kept them from getting together. And when they did, finally, meet up as two single adults, they “picked up right where they left off: hardly talking to each other,” as their wedding website noted. Despite that less than stellar start, and Norman’s later refusal to go out for a night of “Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls” karaoke, and April’s initial hesitation to go on an actual “date” with Norman, who spent 10 minutes begging and pleading with her before she changed her mind, a love story began. Three years later, the avid sailors were in the final stretch of a race that saw Norman knock April into the water and their boat flip over. Driving the boat and trimming the mainsail, Norman pulled out a ring box and casually said, “Hey babe, I have a question.” April, focused on winning the race, replied,

“Are you serious?” before saying “YES!” The couple became co-captains for life on May 20, 2017. They said “I do” in the front yard of April’s childhood home, so she could dress in her childhood bedroom while overseeing ceremony preparations from the window. Like their romance, April and Norman’s wedding day didn’t follow a typical formula: Both ring bearers were under a year old (and stole the show in their tiny tuxedos!). One of the bridesmaids fainted during the ceremony, making April the third of her siblings to have a member of their wedding party go down during the nuptials. Later, the couple’s 200 guests joined them for a celebration at Marché in the French Quarter. Norman and his mother shunned a tear-jerker song for their first dance and got down to “Twistin’ the Night Away.” Norman’s love of Pillsbury’s Funfetti was honored with a groom’s cake that looked like his family sailboat and included mini-sculptures of the couple’s cat, Dawn, and Pomeranian, Ferrah. April and a bridesmaid were able to “live out our college fantasy of belting out ‘Friends in Low Places.’” April and Norman’s wedding day may have been untraditional, but it was filled with love: “The pictures always have Norman and I smiling ear to ear or tearing up with emotions,” April says.

One year later, they found themselves celebrating Carnival together again and they had a “strange but fun conversation about nerd movies,” Courtney says. That talk sparked a long-distance romance, with Nate in New Orleans and Courtney in Birmingham, AL. Bonded by a love of travel and good food and eager to spend more time together, the couple took vacations together. The most memorable of those adventures: A trip to Disney World that allowed Courtney to introduce Nate to one of her favorite places. As the clock approached midnight while the pair were standing in front of Cinderella’s castle, Nate asked a stranger to take a photo. He dropped to one knee as the hour struck. “It was a wonderful and amazing proposal that I didn’t expect and made the trip even more magical,” Courtney says. The couple married in March 2017 during a ceremony rich with personal details: Courtney’s bouquet included her grandmothers’ wedding rings, a way to honor the loved ones who passed away before the big day. The non-denominational ceremony included a reading from the couple’s favorite

movie, “The Princess Bride,” and Nate’s favorite musical, “Les Miserables.” Family members and close friends were drafted as readers and into the bridal party. Nate’s nephew Coleston was the very eager and enthusiastic ring bearer. He dressed with the groom and groomsmen, shunning his mother to “hang with the guys” before the ceremony. With grave concentration, he carried the rings down the aisle. He only cried when told he had to leave the wedding reception. The reception at The New Orleans Lakefront Terminal Atrium included a live wedding painter. “I think it was the best money we spent for our wedding,” Courtney says. “Our guests loved watching him paint and we got an amazing piece of art to take home.” While Courtney remembers the entire day as amazing, her favorite moment came after the ceremony, when she and Nate were alone in a side room having something to eat. “We could just bask in how happy we were,” she says. “It was a calming moment after all the planning and getting ready and before the excitement of the reception. It was a great way for us to have this little intimate moment.”

LEGAL DETAILS Every wedding needs a license. The requirements are different in every state and parish and are subject to change. Contact officials before your big day to make sure your wedding goes off without any hitches!

REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING A MARRIAGE LICENSE oth parties must go to the Parish Clerk’s Office to obtain the license. If both parties are unable to appear, the application B may be signed by one or both before a notary. Military exception: Individual appearing may present a copy of the other applicant’s military ID. Must bring proper identification: a current driver’s license, current state ID or passport.

Both parties must provide Social Security numbers. Both parties must provide certified copies of a birth certificate or a certified birth card. If either party has been divorced, a certified copy of the final divorce decree is required. If widowed, a certified copy of the former spouse’s death certificate is required. There is a 72 hour waiting period between issuing of the license and the ceremony. The license is valid for 30 days after issued.
