WHAT’S

NEW

Camping has moved on a lot from the days of heavy canvas tents, lumpy ex-army sleeping bags and smoky paraffin stoves. Modern high-tech materials together with sophisticated design and precision engineering have recently delivered amazing new camping equipment that sets new levels of comfort and performance. 2021 sees some game-changing technologies, a move into eco-conscious fabrics and some fun new designs and gadgets that make us smile. Here’s a little snapshot of some of the new stuff that we think you’ll love.

SEA TO SUMMIT TENTS Sea to Summit has always been synonymous with innovation, and its equipment and accessories ranges have long been amongst Ellis Brigham’s favourites. So, as the brand celebrates its 30th anniversary, we are super-excited to see Sea to Summit launch their brand new range of tents. Focusing on lightweight and ultralight backpacking, Sea to Summit’s two new tent designs stand out, offering something new and fresh in a category dominated by a common design vernacular. Their re-imagining of tent design and architecture gives an exciting solution to the often less-than-comfortable experience of spending any significant time in a small tent. The Sea to Summit Tension Ridge System is the game-changer, angling tent poles upwards to create higher ceilings, wider doorways, and achieve superior climate control. Early feedback from our testers has been great, so be sure not to miss these if you are looking for a new tent this summer.

HELINOX BLUE PAISLEY CHAIRS Design aficionados, this one is for you. Helinox is upping the style stakes by introducing a bold new Blue Paisley print to their best-selling camping chairs. The iconic Paisley pattern has origins in Persia and India and its popularity soared when it reached our shores. Its modern name originates in Paisley, a Scottish town famous for its textiles, and where these designs were commonly produced. Bought bang up to date, Blue Paisley is Helinox’s tilt on a beautiful, timeless family of patterns that have transcended cultures; from clothing to artwork...and now chairs!

WHAT’S NEW IN CAMPING

BIKEPACKING We’re always up for new adventures. This is what attracted us to bikepacking, an exciting category which combines cycling with camping. Having been on our radar for a while now, we are pleased to introduce a range of bikepacking tents this season that caters for adventures on two wheels. Leading the way is Big Agnes, whose bikepacking models take the DNA of their bestselling backpacking tents and add cycle-friendly features. We particularly like the nifty compression stuff sacks with daisy-chain webbing which make attaching the tent to your bike frame really easy! Although not a requisite, bikepacking lets you cover far longer distances in a day than on foot... or it extends a dayout on your bike into a multi-day adventure. So, if unlocking new adventures further afield is your thing, we highly recommend giving bikepacking a go this summer.

ECO FABRICS BIG AGNES SOLUTION-DYED FABRIC We introduced Big Agnes to our brand roster last year and their innovative, lightweight tents, born from an endless stoke for life on the trail, quickly became bestsellers. Ever at the forefront of product development, 2021 is another exciting season for Big Agnes as they become the first brand to introduce solution-dyed fabrics to the camping equipment category. In solution or dope-dyeing, colour pigment is added to colourless polyester or nylon in its molten state, and when the fibre is extruded, colour runs through to the core. When the fibres are spun into thread and fabric is woven, it already has the required colour and no traditional dyeing process is needed. Compared to traditional piece-dyeing, solution-dyeing reduces energy consumption by 80% and water use by 50% - a massive plus for the environment. Additionally, solution-dyed fabrics have increased UV resistance and better colour stability.

VANGO EARTH COLLECTION Vango has a proud 50-year history of supporting the environment through its on-going upcycling and recycling of camping equipment. For 2021, Vango continues these environmental efforts with the launch of its new Earth collection, made using 100% recycled fabrics. Featuring Vango’s new Sentinel Eco fabric made from recycled single-use plastics, the material retains all the technical performance we have come to expect from Vango. We really applaud this brilliant initiative, particularly as these tents are all about getting the next generation to enjoy the great outdoors.

RUMPL Rumpl’s mission is simple and compelling: to introduce the world to better blankets! Applying modern, technical materials to the humble blanket, they have turned the category on its head, producing something you will quickly wonder how you lived without. Rumpl blankets will keep you warm and cosy wherever you find yourself this summer, from your sofa to your garden and beyond.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR TENT

With the right tent, finding your perfect pitch is easy. Whether you’re planning a multi-day backpacking trip, a wild camping adventure on Dartmoor, a minimalist bivi on an alpine peak or a weekend away with friends and family, choosing the correct tent will make all the difference.

That’s why we have selected our range from brands whose innovations lead the industry. The highest quality materials, advanced construction techniques and functional designs ensure our range of tents represent the very best in their category. TENT SPECIFICATIONS Capacity. The number of people the tent has been designed for. If you don’t mind the extra weight, moving up to the next size (e.g. choosing a three-person tent for two of you) will give you more space to move about and increase your storage options. Weight. Wherever possible, we quote two weights – the maximum and minimum you can expect to carry. Max weight refers to the packed weight of the tent and includes all items that come with the tent. Minimum weight refers to the flysheet, inner tent and poles only.

Pack size. The size of the tent stuff sack. If you need to carry the tent in your pack, the smaller the numbers the better! If you’re tight on space, a good tip is to use compression straps to reduce the volume further. Floorplan. Floorplans are the best way to gauge how much space you’ll have when you’re in your tent. We include measurements for both sleeping areas and vestibules, so you can see the sleeping to storage ratios of each model. It’s worth noting the headroom as in many of the smaller models you’ll only be able to sit or crouch, whereas campsite tents let you stand and move more freely. NB: floorplans are a representation only, actual measurements may vary slightly.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR TENT

Photo: willcopestakemedia.com

TENT CATEGORIES

Knowing which tent to choose can be tricky. To help you narrow down your choices, we split our range into four activity-based tiers. From there, you can hone-in on the stats that are important to you. For each model, we include key features alongside the specifications; these give a more detailed view on what each tent has to offer. Mountain Tents. Designed to cope with the harshest conditions imaginable, these tents will let you sit out the fiercest of storms. Constructed from incredibly strong but lightweight materials, their designs will shrug off snow and strong winds that would destroy lesser tents. Ideal for mountaineering trips, enduring high altitude expedition life or travelling in the most challenging conditions; tents in this category will provide you with the reliability you need.

Backpacking Tents. These tents will provide you with reliable, comfortable shelters when venturing off the beaten track. Using lightweight fabrics and innovative features, they combine low pack weights with useable space. They range from roomy tents with good internal space, dual doors, and generous vestibules; to lighter designs that cut back on features to keep weight to an absolute minimum. Bivi bags and tarps are the ultimate ultralight backpacking shelter.

Photo: TNF

Bikepacking Tents. Bikepacking combines cycling with camping. Bikepacking tents have several specialist features, most noticeable is the short pole sections, which help create a small pack size. This means you can fit the tent into a pannier or strap it to your bike frame. To aid kit organisation, you will also find cycle-specific gear storage including helmet stash points and hanging loops for drying wet gear.

Photo: Toby Roney

Campsite Tents. With a focus on providing space and comfort for practical outdoor living, our range of campsite tents are perfectly suited to groups and family use. Easy to pitch designs with functional floor plans help maximise space, while durable materials can be relied upon to fend off bad weather. So, whether it’s a short adventure with friends or summer camping with family, we’ve got the tent for you.

Originally designed for emergency use, bivi bags are minimalist shelters that divide the outdoor community. For some, they are things of necessity, insurance against unplanned nights, never to be used out of choice due to their lack of comfort and protection. For others, they offer the ultimate free-camping experience; fully immersing you in your environment with a front-row view like no other. So, who are these intrepid individuals who disregard comfort for the thrill of the experience? Traditionally, bivi bags were the domain of alpine and big wall climbers. Used for a degree of protection as they settled down on rocky ledges, where there was scant space for a tent, and the need to shed every gram possible was paramount to success. These days gram-counting is no longer the reserve of alpinists. Many adventurers are driven by the desire to lighten the load in their packs so they can go faster and further. The ultralight mindset has spread, with backpackers, bikepackers, and solo adventurers all looking to master the art of the bivouac. As with other ultralight equipment, bivi bags are specialist pieces of gear. They require consideration and knowledge to make sure they are right for your adventure. Selecting the correct location for a bivi, along with a sound understanding of factors such as wind direction is critical. So too is an appreciation of whether a bivi bag is right for your trip with the weather forecast, trip duration, and the presence of biting insects all key considerations. One way to expand your camping options is to use a tarp alongside your bivi bag. The combined weight and pack size is usually lighter and smaller than a one-person tent and gives you more flexibility. Highly versatile, a tarp can increase weather protection, extend your living area, provide a shelter for cooking and more. page 18

TOP TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL BIVI Don’t go to bed cold. Wherever you are camping, it is crucial to start your night warm. Jogging on the spot, swinging your arms, and star jumps are all simple ways to help raise your temperature. Your sleeping bag traps the heat you release and creates a layer of warm air around your body. If you start cold, it is far harder to warm up; even with the best insulation around you. Protect your gear. Once your sleeping bag is inside your bivi bag, there is not much room left over. Make sure you have a way to keep the rest of your kit dry. Put your clothing and essentials into waterproof dry bags. If you are carrying a pack, protect it with a waterproof cover. Take time to find the perfect pitch. Find a flat, sheltered spot that offers wind protection. A rock wall, trees, a hollow; these will all help to provide cover. And definitely make sure that you are not setting up in a water run-off channel.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SLEEPING BAG

From family campers seeking comfort and seasoned backpackers looking to save every gram to high altitude mountaineers demanding the magic balance of warmth and weight, our comprehensive sleeping bag range covers all outdoor needs.

To ensure your nights under the stars are memorable for all the right reasons, it is vital to choose a sleeping bag capable of keeping you warm in the conditions that you’ll be experiencing. To help you make this decision, we provide both the EN Temperature Ratings and our own Season Rating. Used in conjunction, they help highlight the conditions for which the bag was designed. If in doubt about what to choose, we suggest that you select the bag that provides more warmth than you may consider necessary. Check our Sleeping Bag Comparison Chart on page 35. TEMPERATURE RATINGS For each sleeping bag, we include the comfort, limit and extreme temperature rating. These are results gained from testing under the EN 13537 ‘Requirements for Sleeping Bags’ European Standard. The standard enables reliable comparison between the different brands and bags. The test produces three temperature results, which relate to different user experiences:

Comfort Temperature. Based on a ‘standard’ adult woman having a comfortable night’s sleep. Limit Temperature. Based on the lowest temperature at which a ‘standard’ adult male is deemed to be able to have a comfortable night’s sleep. Extreme Temperature. A survival only rating for a ‘standard’ adult woman. At this temperature, there is a serious risk of hypothermia and other temperature related ailments.

The two ratings that you should focus on are the Comfort Temperature and the Limit Temperature. Based on the assumption that women sleep colder, we would suggest that women (and anyone who feels the cold more) should focus on the Comfort temperature and men should focus on the Limit temperature. You want to make sure that this represents the lowest temperature that you expect to experience. Comfort Limit Extreme

-1°C

-7°C

-25°C

NB: The EN 13537 standard is not accurate for sleeping bags at the extreme ends of the weight and temperature spectrums. For these bags, the ratings supplied are based on the manufacturer’s recommended sleep limit.

SEASON RATINGS 1 Season These lightweight bags are suitable for use on the warm nights experienced during the summer. 2 Season Perfect for late spring to early autumn temperatures, these bags are aimed at those who like to camp during the warmer months of the year. 3 Season Designed for use from spring through to autumn, these versatile bags offer the comfort and warmth needed for cooler temperatures down to and just below freezing.

page 26

3+ Season With the increased insulation necessary to cope with the potentially bitter temperatures of early spring and late autumn, these bags will also provide some users with enough warmth for year-round use. 4 Season Designed for use during the coldest months of the year, these winter bags will keep you comfortable in low temperatures and harsh conditions. 4+ Season Specialist bags for high altitude mountaineering and use in the world’s harshest environments.

DOWN OR SYNTHETIC? Down Insulation. Ounce for ounce nothing insulates as effectively as down. Down-filled bags are very light, warm and compressible, and when cared for correctly will last for many years. Down is measured in fill power which represents how much loft the down has. The higher the fill power, the better the warmth to weight ratio will be. However, without a hydrophobic treatment, down is susceptible to moisture - when wet its insulating capabilities will significantly drop. Synthetic Insulation. Offering good performance at a lower price, synthetic insulation is light, durable and retains a much higher percentage of its insulating properties when wet. Modern materials and constructions enable synthetic sleeping bags to still achieve good warmth ratings, and with better water resistance than their down counterparts, they make excellent choices for adventures in damp conditions. Easier to care for, if you’re camping with kids, they’re the sensible choice! ... AND DON’T FORGET YOUR MAT Sleeping bags should always be used with a sleeping mat. Protecting you from ground heat loss, and providing cushioning and support, they’re the essential addition to your sleep system. For highlights of our range, see pages 36-38. Photo: The North Face

BIKEPACKING TENTS. A growing category, bikepacking combines cycling with camping. Tents made for this activity have several specialist features. Most noticeable is the short pole sections, which help create a small pack size. This means you can fit the tent into a pannier or strap it to your bike frame. To aid kit organisation, you will also find cycle-specific gear storage. This includes helmet stash points and hanging loops for drying wet gear.

Pack Size. The size of the complete tent in its stuff sack. It’s worth noting that the actual pack size can often be reduced by compression.

SLEEPING BAG COMPARISON CHART SEASON RATINGS 1 Season. These lightweight bags are suitable for use on the warm nights experienced during the summer. 2 Season. Perfect for late spring to early autumn temperatures, these bags are aimed at those who like to camp during the warmer months of the year. 3 Season. Designed for use from spring through to autumn, these versatile bags offer the comfort and warmth needed for cooler temperatures down to and just below freezing.

3+ Season. With the increased insulation necessary to cope with the potentially bitter temperatures of early spring and late autumn, these bags will also provide some users with enough warmth for year-round use. 4 Season. Designed for use during the coldest months of the year, these winter bags will keep you comfortable in low temperatures and harsh conditions. 4+ Season. Specialist bags for mountaineering at high altitude and use in the world’s harshest environments.

DOWN FILLING. Ounce for ounce nothing insulates as effectively as down. Down-filled bags are very light, warm and compressible, and when cared for correctly will last for many years. Down is measured in fill power; which represents how much loft the down has. The higher the fill power, the better the warmth to weight ratio will be. However, without a hydrophobic treatment, down is susceptible to moisture - when wet its insulating capabilities will significantly drop.

SYNTHETIC FILLING.

TEMPERATURE RATINGS For each sleeping bag, we include the Comfort, Limit and Extreme temperature rating: results gained from testing under the EN 13537 ‘Requirements for Sleeping Bags’ European Standard. The standard enables reliable comparison between the different brands and bags. The test produces three temperature results. Comfort Temperature. Based on a ‘standard’ adult woman having a comfortable night’s sleep. Limit Temperature. Based on the lowest temperature at which a ‘standard’ adult male is deemed to be able to have a comfortable night’s sleep. Extreme Temperature. A survival only rating. At this temperature, there is a serious risk of hypothermia.

The two ratings that you should focus on are the Comfort and the Limit temperatures. Based on the assumption that women sleep colder, we would suggest that women (and anyone who feels the cold more) should focus on the Comfort temperature and men should focus on the Limit temperature. NB: The EN 13537 standard is not accurate for sleeping bags at the extreme ends of the weight and temperature spectrums. For these bags, we use the manufacturer’s recommended sleep limit.

WHAT IS R-VALUE? R-value is a measure of thermal resistance; the higher the R-value, the more thermally resistant the material or structure is. In layman’s terms, when it comes to choosing a camping mat, the higher the R-value, the warmer you’ll be.
