But a road has been scratched into the mountain, and you can stuff your rental car full of supplies and beat the hell out of the undercarriage, and grind your way up here, to the refugio, right at the snowline, and cook your sausages and get drunk off your ass and watch the most amazing sunsets. The Rila Lakes were frozen over, but we weren’t here to see them anyway. We had something else in minda zone accented and accentuated by a 700 people/hour Poma drag lift servicing a 950-metre ski run. The drag was built for the beginner pitch on its immediate right, however to its immediate left were some heavily exposed lines, chutes, and ridges with 50-degree entrances, couloirs, and lots of rock. For a long time the best compliment I thought I’d ever heard was, “Wow! You don’t ski like a girl at all.” In retrospect I think how incredibly demeaning that was. I have spent the last few years training, traveling, competing, and getting after it with some of the strongest athletes I’ve encountered in my many years of skiing and almost all of them are girls. There are some incredible role-models in the ski industry for women right now and I’ve never been prouder to be a part of a group of women that ski hard, support each other even in the fiercest competitive environments, and have fun doing it. So the next time someone tries to tell me I don’t ski like a girl I’ll smile and reply that yes, yes I do and I wouldn’t change that for the world. -Jaqueline Knutson
