[→]WELCOME TO PRAGUE!

Welcome to Prague! Whether you‘ve just landed with plane, arrived by train, bus or car, we have very important information about how to get to the city centre using all possible types of transport, without wasting more money than it’s necessary.

↓1. PRAGUE BY PLANE

↓...BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

6

The airport is located on the northwest edge of Prague, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the centre of the metropolis. Your money can be changed in the currency exchange offices or kiosks situated in the airport. Important phone numbers include +420 220 111 888 (General info line - nonstop operation) and +420 220 115 005 (Lost and Found service).

↓ HOW TO GET TO THE CITY CENTER

If you‘ve just arrived at the airport, getting to the centre will take about twenty to thirty minutes depending on traffic (if you use a taxi or shuttle service you will find necessary information below). If you choose cheaper but less convenient public transport you have to expect fifty minutes on the road.

The bus is the cheapest way to get to the city centre. The disadvantage may be that you need to buy a bus ticket paid in Czech crowns or with credit card. To get the cash, you can use ATMs in the arrival halls of the airport. Or you can buy the actual ticket directly in a kiosk or at the information counter in both arrival halls (open from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.). Furthermore, in the vending machines, located next to the bus stop, or directly from the bus driver (it will cost you a few crowns more). The ticket price is 32 CZK for a transfer ticket, with which you can freely switch among bus, tram and subway for 90 minutes. On the shorter distance and duration of 30 minutes you can use the ticket for 24 CZK (with this ticket, however, it is not allowed to switch among the types of transport). If you have more luggages, you will pay 16 Czech crowns extra.

For over 1000 years, Prague has served as the political, cultural and economic centre of the Czech state. Having been the seat of two Holy Roman Emperors during the gothic and renaissance periods, it also had the status of the Holy Roman Empire capital. Prague’s history commenced in the year 870, although evidence shows the area had been inhabited since the Stone Age. The city flourished during the 14th century, under the reign of King Charles IV, who, among other deeds, ordered the building of the famous Charles Bridge or Saint Vitus Cathedral, the oldest gothic cathedral in central Europe, and Charles University, the oldest university in central Europe. Prague was then the third-largest city in Europe. Now home to some 1.2 million inhabitants, Prague became the capital of the newly set up Czechoslovakia in 1918, with the end of WW I and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1992, Prague’s historic center became a UNESCO world heritage site, and is currently one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations.

PRAŠNÁ BRÁNA PRAGUE 1, NÁMĚSTÍ REPUBLIKY 5

The Powder Gate (Prašná brána) is a late-Gothic structure and one of the most important monuments of medieval Prague. It was here that the Royal Route began and where one of the main roads from Kutná Hora, where silver was mined into the royal treasury, led. The Powder Gate was built in place of the older Gate tower, related to the fortification of the Old Town of Prague from the time of Václav II‘s reign. The older tower was known as the Mountain Gate. The Powder Gate was designed largely as a representative symbol as well as a customs collection point. Its construction began in 1475. From about 1715 it served as a firepowder warehouse, hence the name ‚‘Powder‘‘. During the Prussia siege of Prague in 1757, the tower was considerably destroyed. Today‘s appearance was not acquired by the tower until 18781886 for a fresh look treatment, led by architect Josef Mocker. The draft was the Old Town Bridge Tower.

STAROMĚSTSKÝ ORLOJ PRAGUE 1, STAROMĚTSKÉ NÁMĚSTÍ

The Old Town Square of the Old Town Orloj (Staroměstský orloj) are medieval astronomical clocks located on the south side of the Old Town Hall tower in Prague.

The first written reference to Orloj dates back to 1410.The clock is made up of several parts - apart froman astronomical and calendar plate, it is fitted with the mechanism of twelve apostles, who appear in two small windows every entire hour (9.00 - 11p.m.). In a parade of apostles, another mannequin on the sides of the clock comes alive in mechanical motion - the reaper ringing, turning the hourglass, indicating to thestanding Turk that his time is up.

He‘s shaking his head away. Vanity and Lakomec behave similarly. The sought-after Orloj is part of the historic centre of Prague, belonging to the UNESCO list of cultural monuments.

CHARLES BRIDGE

The Czech Republic’s capital is full of amazing sights of great value. But Charles Bridge definitely belongs among the TOP 5 most amazing ones. Not only is this medieval building one of the most famous bridges in the world, but it is also inseparably connected to the most glamorous era of Prague and – last but not least – it just might be the most beautiful bridge in Europe. And we are not exaggerating at all. Charles Bridge is 516 meters long, 9.5 meters wide, 13 meters high, and stands on 15 pillars. It’s also the part of the so-called Royal Route.

The Prague´s Jewish Museum was founded in 1906. It was founded by Dr. Salomon Hugo Lieben, historian, and Dr. August Stein, a representative of the Czech-Jewish movement and later chairman of the Prague Jewish Community. It was supposed to collect documents on the history, traditions and habits of the Jewish population in Bohemia and Moravia. The Jewish Museum owns rich collections of silver, textiles and has one of the most extensive Jewish artefacts in the world. It contains 40 000 artefacts and 100 000 books. It is unique not only for the number of the artefacts, but above all for the fact that they were collected in a single integral territory, i.e. Bohemia and Moravia.

It is one of the most dominant landmarks of the modern city of Prague and a national cultural monument situated just above steep slopes of the Žižkov hill. An integral part of the Memorial is the largest equestrian sculpture in Central Europe, of Jan Žižka of Trocnov, created by the sculptor Bohumil Kafka. The Memorial was built in 1929-1938 to honour those who participated in the struggle for the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic (the National Liberation Memorial). During the Nazi of occupation in 1939-1945, it served as a military material warehouse. It was modified and extended once more after 1945. After 1948, it was misused for the Communist regime propaganda.

PETŘÍN HILL

Petřínský vrch, Prague 1

Many people do not have any idea hat almost in the centre of Prague there is a small town with its own poetry and identity. The Nový Svět area is a kind of a small district in the immediate vicinity of the Prague Castle, full of picturesque corners and harmony. Actually, it was a suburb of the Castle Area (Hradčany) that was founded in the mid-14th century along an old road heading the village of Střešovice. In 1360, it became a part of Hradčany by decision of the emperor Charles IV. It was integrated to the designed city fortification system. The origin of this part of Hradčany is not exactly known, but it was probably a forecourt of the Prague Castle positioned on a gradually filled ravine and the Brusnice stream valley.

Petřín is a 327metre high hill in the centre of Prague. It features a distinctive landmark of the city of Prague, in particular when viewed from the right- hand bank of the Vltava River. The hills is built primarily of sandstone rocks. Therefore, sandstone quarries used to be since ancient times. The name of Petřín (Peter´s Hill) is believed to refer to numerous rocks. Nearby the St. Lawrence church, there used to be the execution place. After the completion of the erection of the Hunger Wall, the execution place was moved to the opposite Vítkov hill. The most popular way to get to the Petřín Hill is to take the cable car. This the oldest ground cable way in the country. Its length is 510 m.

CRISIS AVERTED

hen the covid pandemic caused the movie world to move to streaming services in a big way, the question was whether it would destroy cinemas as we know them and whether we would eventually be doomed to just watching movies at home.

Now we can safely say that despite the catastrophic predictions, no revolution has yet unfolded. At the end of the year, many cinemas reported a return to prerelease numbers, and then the halls were bursting at the seams and attendance records were broken. In addition, it seems that the general price increase is not deterring us from going to the cinemas.

Anyway, let’s be glad that the cinemas are doing well, because it motivates the studios to make more movies in general, not just blockbusters. Just as the Lion King taught us - the circle of life!

FEEL LIKE IN HOLLYWOOD!

Although you won’t find any Hollywood movie stars in the Czech streets, many of them were filming here. So you can make a picture of Czech sites that adorn a lot of famous Hollywood movies.

We have to Start with the blockbuster Mission: Impossible from 1996 with Tom Cruise in the lead role. It was the first major Hollywood production that visited Prague and the filmmakers had used a number of gorgeous Prague scenes. The party at the embassy was filmed at the National Museum, the escape from modern glass restaurant (cover photo) on the Old Town Square. In this case, however, keep in mind that the restaurant itself doesn’t exist – it was made just for the purpose of filming the movie.

After 15 years the production of Mission: Impossible returned to Prague, this with the fourth chapter – Ghost Protocol. They used the Main Railway Station (the opening scene with killed agent) or the corner house in the street Pštrossova 17, where Ethan Hunt ran from the police. In 2002 Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock visited Prague together to shoot an action thriller Bad Company. Rock was chased

by bad guys in Thun Street in Lesser Town (Malá Strana), Hopkins’ agent went to helim him through Castle stairs (Zámecké schody). Together they went to the Castle Square. They also used the Shooter’s Island (Střelecký ostrov) in the Old Town (the scene with atomic bomb dealer).

Even the legendary vampire slayer Blade used the streets of Prague in his second adventure movie. From the entrance next to the pizzeria in the Sokolovská Street, the filmmakers made a vampire blood bank. And for the seat of vampire family Damaskinos they used secluded place of Vaníčkova Street.

Prague had a key role in the action movie of Vin Diesel xXx filmed in 2002. Beginning of the movie was shot on the Old Town Square (the producers managed to depopulate it, which was almost an im

special 22

possible task), then the camera wande red the Týnská Street, the Powder Gate, the Republic Square and the seat of the Czech philharmonic – Rudolfinum.

In 2004 our country was visited by Wol verine – Hugh Jackman, in those times without his comic book claws, but with his long coat and hat as Van Helsing. The battle in the village with three brides of Dracula (probably the best part of the mo vie) was filmed at the Kunratice Castle in Prague 4. Then the hero walks the street Na Kampě under the Charles Bridge, where one of the brides offers him a trade. The magnificent ball of vampires was filmed in the Saint Nicholas Church.

And then of course there‘s the recently filmed The Gray Man with the Chris Evans/Ryan Gosling duo, when the fil-

included Prague to its scenes, natu rally doesn’t end. Furthermore, there were shot movies like The Bourne Identity (street Kampa, street of Political prisoners, the Senovážná square) or A Knight’s Tale (Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge). Before the walk in our metropolis we recommend to watch all of these mentioned movies. th.

Seven out of ten European online customers buy goods in e-shops outside their home country, 57 percent even outside Europe. The reason is mainly better prices, wider offer or cheaper transport. Of course, this does not mean that customers give up on domestic production. After all, with that, all the shops could clos e. But the foundation is clear - you need to be assertive and be able to offer something unique to your customers that they can‘t buy elsewhere.

And we have prepared such tips for you on the following pages. We chose carefully and promise that in each of the presented establishments you can get something that they would not offer anywhere else. We wish you good hunting! ml.

6. THINGS YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT PRAGUERS IN ADVANCE!

1) PRAGUERS ARE ALWAYS IN A BAD MOOD

When there is someone with a grumpy expression that points out that he would like to kill you, don‘t take it personally. Prague residents are always in a hurry and still seem to be in a bad mood. In short, it works like that here. But otherwise they are fine!

2) THEY DON‘T WAIT FOR THE GREEN LIGHT

You can also recognize true Praguers by ignoring the traffic lights. In short, he is looking for every possible space that will be offered to him on the road, and when he sees the opportunity, he immediately crosses the street. Red, green, it doesn‘t matter.

3) THEY DRINK BEER, A LOT OF BEER

The Czech Republic is well known for its excellent beer, and the Czechs have certainly never concealed themselves by being able to „send a few pieces“ to themselves. But if you with such a Praguer for a beer, don‘t be fooled. “Going out for one beer” is really just a phrase. Every Czech drinks an average of 142 liters of beer per year, while during an average session, the trained Pragueer handles some 8 pieces and is not even out of his breath.

4. THEY MUST ALWAYS PLAN SOMETHING

You will probably feel like lazy, because the Praguers have - it seems - planned perhaps every minute of the day. And this also applies to weekends. It can only be Monday morning and the right Praguer already knows what he will do on the weekend.

5. THEY ARE OBSESSED WITH CARS

Although Prague has one of the best transport links in Europe, if we talk about public transport (train, metro, tram, bus), Prague citizens are still obsessed with driving everywhere. And even though they have to wait in the traffic jams for an hour.

6. THEY DON‘T SEEM, BUT THEY HELP

Praguers are vigilant because someone keeps putting them something on the street or wants money from them. And this is really annoying them. Therefore, when you stop them, they immediately go into defense mode and can look very dull. Don‘t let this scare you. As soon as he realizes that you just want some advice, they change completely and almost leads you to the place. They don‘t seem that, but they‘re sweeties!

PALLADIUM SHOPPING MALL - SHOPPING AS AN EXPERIENCE

shopping and beauty

You might think that shopping in shopping malls has nothing to surprise you. It‘s still the same impersonal style, lots of cold metal and glass and not much warmth. Palladium is different. Its history and distinctive character make it a remarkable landmark in the heart of Prague that is well worth a visit, as evidenced by the fact that more than 250 million satisfied visitors have passed through Palladium since its inception.

The Palladium building bears interesting testimonies of past centuries and is at the same time a pleasant stop for shopping, relaxation, fast food, or gourmet experiences in classic restaurants. The center is open 7 days a week and all year round, including holidays, and is one of the most popular stops for visitors, tourists and Prague residents heading downtown for work, study, or meetings.

Palladium is a modern shopping center with the widest range of almost 200 shops, restaurants and services in the very heart of Prague. It is located on Náměstí Republiky Square (at the metro or tram station of the same name), opposite the Municipal House, just a few minutes’ walk from Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square.

For visitors who prefer to drive their own vehicle, the underground garage with 600 parking spaces is the ideal solution. They can also wash their vehicle or charge their electric car. Current availability can be checked on the website www.palladiumpraha.cz.

A very popular offer for customers is also the purchase of Palladium gift vouchers, which are a great gift for Christmas or whenever. The vouchers are valid in 110 stores and visitors can buy them daily at the Info Kiosk on Level 0 of the shopping center or conveniently from home on the e-shop (https://eshop.palladiumpraha.cz).

A LITTLE HISTORY

The history of the site on which the complex now stands dates back to the 12th century, the Romanesque period, when the first stone buildings were built here. The remains of the stone Romanesque palaces have become part of the interior of the present building and can be admired, for example, in the Luxor bookshop. The complex and the spacious stables were used by the army from the 1880s onwards. Incidentally, this is also the building where Josef Kajetán Tyl wrote the Czech national anthem in 1834. The Palladium was created by the reconstruction and extension of the former Jiří z Poděbrad barracks on Náměstí Republiky Square, and this combination of historical elements with modern architecture creates a unique atmosphere that has made the building a distinctive landmark of the city center, an attractive destination for many visitors, and a real shopping experience.

ZAHRADA CHUTÍ (Tasty Garden)

The +2 floor is dedicated to gastronomy and is presented under the Tasty Garden brand after the reconstruction. From classic restaurants (Indian, Thai, Czech) to fast food restaurants and specialties such as freshly prepared waffles or fruit juices and ice creams, there is something for everyone.

„RELAX-ART-FASHION“ ZONE

If customers are tired and want to relax, they can use the „Relax-Art-Fashion“ Zone, which can be found on the +2 floor next to the fitness center. Here, visitors to Palladium can enjoy comfortable seating, charge their mobile phones, borrow and read a book from the library, browse the latest trends in fashion or enjoy the art on display. The zone is open daily from 11am to 6pm. Admission is free.

crossroads of the important medieval link between Prague Castle and the centre of the Old Town, also called the Royal Route, and the ancient road leading to Vyšehrad.

The intersection of Charles and Hus Streets is reached by the southern part of the facade of the Clam-Gallas Palace, one of the most important Baroque palace buildings in Prague. It is a magnificent example of a monumental aristocratic residence situated in a small medieval-type urban development. The palace was built in the High Baroque style on the site of an older building in 1714-18 according to a design by J. B. Fischer of Erlach for Jan Václav Count Gallas. Among others, M. B. Braun and his workshop contributed to the decoration of the building (portals with atlants, statues of ancient gods in the roof part, cherubs inside and vases on the staircase), the painter C. Carlone, stonemason D. A. Rappa and the plasterers R. Bolla, S. Bussi and G. Fiumberti.

In one of the three courtyards there is a fountain with a statue of Triton by M. B. Braun, protected by a Baroque grille.

(1787) and L. van Beethoven (1796) performed here, theatre was performed here and exhibitions of paintings were held. In a niche of the Palace‘s enclosure wall on Mariánské Square there is a fountain with an allegorical sculpture of the Vltava River by V. Prachner. The northern wing of the palace was raised by one storey to accommodate the anticipated construction of a theatre hall. However, this certainly interesting plan was eventually abandoned and the resulting under-roof space was then used as a hayloft.

FOUR OF SMÍCHOV

restaurant

hen I visit any new city, I have to face the same challenge - if I want to perfectly enjoy the whole day, I have to intricately search for different places and then find the way how to get there. But if you take my tip and head to Smíchov, you can forget this complication.

My story will almost start as a joke. What do an old Czech beer hall, a modern restaurant, a beautiful garden with seating in the courtyard and a stylish bar in the basement have in common? Despite their differences, they all form a perfect harmonious whole, with all parts complementing each other perfectly.

This quartet of places is located a short walk from the Anděl metro station in Prague‘s Smichov district in the same building. We started our journey with friends in the old Czech beer hall U Bílého Lva to enjoy not only the best Czech tank beer (Staropramen), but also the classic Czech cuisine. This unique place, where the visitor can enjoy the atmosphere of the old Prague, has been here since 1889! Moreover, on Fridays, the space will be enlivened by big beat bands, so the great experiences are guaranteed. But since the nearby passageway attracts people to visit the White Lion’s little bro-

ther, the Fortel Restaurant, our curiosity made us to move there during the evening. And we couldn‘t believe our eyes.

Although the restaurants are adjacent, the atmosphere at Fortel couldn‘t be more different. The first thing that attracts your attention upon arrival is a pair of massive metal stairs. One is blue, the other red, and each leads to a different part of the restaurant. The unusually cascading space was, as the attendant explained to me, once a cinema, which explains the atypically high ceiling and the giant niche on one of the walls that makes one think of a movie screen. The space is open but has a complex structure. It has several levels, giving each seating position a unique perspective.

And then the details! Someone has really unleashed his/her invetiveness - the bar is adorned with a digital panel reading the name Fortel like in the Tetris game, only to be eaten by a Pac Man. Ceilings are decorated with beer barrels with light bulbs in them. There‘s a Scandinavian seating area with a fireplace in one section, and a more romantic seating area in another. A friend once told me that it‘s the toilets that say the most about the quality of a place. Here, Fortel scores, too. The walls of the toilets are adorned with seemingly broken tiles, with a cement substrate layer underneath. It‘s perhaps the most original design element I‘ve ever seen.

- A PLACE YOU WON‘T WANT TO LEAVE

den is closed for obvious reasons.

Since the day is far from being over with a visit to a restaurant, this unique Smíchov space has one more trump card up its sleeve. It is a basement cocktail bar called Back Doors. Here, the atmosphere changes a bit again. Dark interior, long bar, beverages are mixed by experienced bartenders, drinks to taste, a stage dedicated to unique performers. In short, the perfect stylish space to end the day in style, where you can enjoy a unique drink with friends. If anyone gets hungry, he/ she can have tapas brought in from Fortel

Fortel is decorated with a giant illuminated sign on the ceiling that reads „Smíchov always sticks together“. And the same goes for all the aforementioned establishments. Each is different and together they form a unique whole. The are not so many in the world.

A few advices at the end. Be sure to book your seat, the establishments are not inflatable. Fridays at Fortel are enlivened by the live saxophone and DJs. And it‘s worth popping in for the lunch menus too, the menu is varied and the prices very reasonable.
