LEARN THE RUDIMENTS OF PHOTOGRAPHIC MAGIC WITH MARK TERRENCE SY Freezing a moment in time has never really been a problem since the invention of the camera. Everyone can preserve a memory with just a click, and the produced snapshot is something people could keep and look back to when plain reminiscing isn’t enough. The real challenge is how you can keep the shots alive after you managed to capture them within the frames of the photograph. Concert/gig photographer Mark Terrence Sy is a master of this technique. “The photos I take are just as important as the stories behind them,” Sy says on his Facebook profile. “The first song of the setlist that gets the crowed [sic]
pumped up; that favorite line in a song that seems to amazingly make its way into the heart of every single person in the audience; the bass that makes you bob your head to every flick of the guitar. These are the stories I capture. It’s as if I wish the deaf could hear the music through my photos.” His shots from the latest Lady Gaga concert here in the Philippines are a proof that he, indeed, is capable of this magic. The photographs may have not literally translated sound waves into visible images, but one look at them and you’ll know they are alive; the movements are there, the songs suspended in the air as the singer opens her mouth, the smokes and lights frozen in the middle of merging but still seemingly fleeting. The same thing can be said with his shots in various other concerts he attended. This August 4-5 and August 18-19, find out what it takes to be a good concert photographer in a workshop with Sy himself! It does not matter whether you are toting a proud DSLR camera or just a point-andshoot—once you learn the advanced methods of shooting and post-processing as well as the proper techniques when taking photographs with unpredictable lighting.
