Unieke bezienswaardigheden zijn de enorme koepel, de eeuwenoude schuilplek van de bewoners van Sint Pieter, de donkere gotische gang en de Kluis (rijksbewaarplaats van o.a. Rembrandts ‘Nachtwacht’). Caves > Do you dare go underground? Not afraid of the dark? Go explore the caves below the St. Pietersberg hill. No light, no sound, no smell, no radiation, no pollution, no mobile phone signal, no sense of time… Through a labyrinth that once comprised more than 20,000 corridors, a professional guide takes you underground. Céramique (4e etage) staat de zogenoemde ’Parijse maquette’, een model van de stad uit 1748. Maastricht heeft deze te danken aan de Franse bezetting in de 18de eeuw. Het was maar een korte bezetting: de stad was amper veroverd toen er in Aken een vredesverdrag ondertekend werd. Toch vond Lodewijk XV het de moeite waard om nog een maquette van ‘zijn’ veroverde Maastricht te laten bouwen. Emile Ramakers, historicus, geeft een toelichting aan deze maquette. Daarna neemt hij je mee wandelen langs sporen in Wyck die nog herinneren aan deze en andere bezettingen. // The fourth floor of the Centre Ceramique library is home to the 'Paris maquette', a model of Maastricht dating from 1748. Maastricht was occupied by the French in the 18th century and despite the short duration of this occupation (a peace treaty was signed shortly after the city was conquered) Louis XV thought it worthy enough to have a model of 'his' conquered city made. Emile Ramakers, historian, clarifies this model after which he takes you on a walk through Wyck to show remaining traces of this and other occupations.
