Z’List 2016 winners Welcome to the 2016 issue of Z’List, the best in 89 categories as selected by Zionsville Times Sentinel readers. The list began with the nominations. The ballot was published in the Times Sentinel and the top three nominations advanced to the final round. Some categories had two nominations, but some categories had more than three finalists in the event of a tie. The finalists were then listed in alphabetical order. Online voting for the winners started Jan. 13 and continued through Jan. 25. This year, total votes were up by more than 25 percent to 3,670. Thank you for all of the votes and enjoy the 2016 Z’List.

Schools edge small-town community Staff report
When all the ballots were counted, just 15 votes separated the Best Reason to Live in Zionsville category, the last question in the Z’List people’s choice awards. In the end, the
schools edged out small town community for the win. “It is fitting that ZCS is a foremost reason people settle in Zionsville,” said Zionsville Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott
Robison. “Families that value learning and contributing to a community of safety and prosperity have demanded excellent schools across the decades. ZCS Board leaders have always been ZCS parents and com-
munity minded stewards. As a result, strong and positive programming for youth has grown here through a professional staff capable of helping students along the road of life – that begins here.” Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak said the difference in Zionsville compared to some other communities is that it’s been able to keep its small-town feel as it grows. “I’ve lived here since 1977, and Zionsville still feels the same as it did 39 years ago,” Haak said. “Whether we have 2,500 or 25,000 people, it still feels like a small town tight knit community.” He said town residents look out for each other,

they’re friendly and they volunteer to help make the community better. Haak added that you can go anywhere in town, walk in, and know someone. “Lions Park is one of the most popular places in town, and you’ll always find friends and neighbors there,” he said. He added that the core Village area and Main Street and Zionsville’s long history of working on its parks and pathway system have also
made the town attractive. “I’m not surprised that the schools and small town community were listed as the best reasons to live in Zionsville,” said Julie JohnsCole, executive director of the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce. “It all comes down to people — our residents, business owners, community organizations, educators and faith leaders who all play a role in making Zionsville a great small town.”

The Big Ugly arrived on Zionsville’s Main Street two years ago, and now it has helped Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream capture four top spots on the Zionsville Times Sentinel’s Z’List people’s choice awards, more than any other nominee. We really focus on having a great environment and your experience.” Bub’s, 620 S. Main St., finished first for Best Place for a Hamburger, Best French Fries, Best Place for
a Kid’s Meal and Best family Dining. “There’s not a lot of family places in Zionsville,” Frey said in January 2014. “I saw there was an opportunity, and when (developer) Bob (Harris) approached me with it, I jumped at the chance. Our goal was to be on (Eagle Creek) and have a destination point.” All of Bub’s hamburgers are made from fresh, handpattied ground chuck and the buns are custom made to fit their burgers and baked fresh daily at a local bakery, according to the Bub’s website. The restaurant originated in Carmel, but also has a Bloomington location.
