Please join me in celebrating the 12th Annual San Francisco Small Business Week. This year, our theme is “Tap into Opportunity.” Twelve years ago when we began celebrating small business week, we were eager to highlight and celebrate the small businesses that make San Francisco diverse and unique. Since then, we have seen an increase in entrepreneurs and small businesses that start, stay and grow in San Francisco, and the City has provided more opportunities. Located in the heart of City Hall is our Small Business Assistance Center providing hands on assistance to small businesses in multiple languages. To help entrepreneurs develop their businesses, we expanded the San Francisco Business Portal, with comprehensive information and tailored tools, the portal helps you navigate the process. Since the inception of my Invest in Neighborhoods Initiative in 2012, I have provided over $22 million dollars for small business programs and services that augment the character and vibrancy of our neighborhood commercial districts. This past year, we launched SF Biz Connect which challenges businesses to buy local when making purchasing decisions. We asked larger San Francisco businesses to shift 5% of their spending to small, local businesses. A year later, the platform has over 40 pledged businesses and 200 small business listings. www.sfbizconnect.com/

Continuing with our focus on small businesses, we relaunched Shop and Dine in the 49, a citywide campaign to increase visibility on the importance of buying local. This initiative focuses on bringing spending back into our diverse neighborhoods. By shopping, eating, drinking, playing, and utilizing local services within our neighborhoods, we ensure unique corridors and local businesses remain thriving, successful, and vibrant. Join me in honoring the thousands of small businesses that drive our economy, create local jobs, and innovate and inspire our communities. These small businesses anchor our diverse neighborhoods and shape the character of our world-class city. Their vibrant success defines the heart and soul of San Francisco. Our Small Business Committee has lined up an exciting week of events and activities from May 21-28. It is my hope you will take advantage of the organized events, webinars, workshops, and networking opportunities that are available. Join me in celebrating San Francisco Small Business Week 2016. Let’s celebrate small businesses this week and every week!

Edwin M. Lee Mayor, City and County of San Francisco

Greetings from Mark Quinn, SBA District Director Greetings Present and Future Business Owners, In a world where more and more city centers are looking interchangeable, we support the small businesses that keep San Francisco unique. Many Bay Area small businesses have become the nation and the world’s biggest businesses, but many also choose to remain local and sustain what we love about our neighborhoods.

I hope to see you at many of the events this San Francisco Small Business Week, tapping into the opportunities for classes and networking provided by all our resource partners. Supporting local commerce is our mission year round, but during this week in particular we want to celebrate you! Kind regards,

More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business. The SBA would like to take this opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs. Every day, you’re working to grow your businesses, create jobs and drive innovation.

Mark Quinn District Director San Francisco District Office U.S. Small Business Administration

Greetings from Bank of America’s Regional Executive Bank of America is honored to be the presenting sponsor for the 12th annual San Francisco Small Business Week for the third straight year. This is an exciting time to be a small business owner in San Francisco, and we are honored to participate in this celebration for the community of entrepreneurs that keeps San Francisco a thriving marketplace.

Bank of America understands the power of local connections and is dedicated to partnering with neighborhoods and communities across the country. In 2015, we extended more than $235 million to Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) to support affordable housing, small business growth and neighborhood stabilization.

Bay Area small businesses thrive because they embrace collaboration and technology without hesitation. According to the most recent Bank of America Small Business Owner Report, more than half of San Francisco small business owners say that in recent years their workplace has become more focused on teamwork and 91% say that changing technology has helped their business evolve. We’ll also have new data with the launch of our spring report that we’ll be sharing with you throughout the week.

We are thrilled to expand our commitment to provide local expertise and guidance for small business owners across California. Right now there are more than 350 Bank of America small business bankers throughout the state. Having a dedicated team means customers have convenient access to local specialists who can provide guidance and insights to help them understand the marketplace and make better decisions for their businesses.

Bank of America has more than 100 years of history in California. A.P. Giannini opened the doors of the Bank of Italy in San Francisco in 1904 before changing its name to Bank of America in 1930. In the past, we’ve funded major projects like the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. More recently, we helped build AT&T Park and financed the renovation of the Ferry Building. We continue to offer a variety of new and responsible ways to provide more capital to small businesses across the state through flexible funding with a new streamlined Unsecured Line of Credit (ULOC), which includes amounts from $10,000 to $100,000 with no interest until the funds are used to help small business owners manage larger expenses. In 2015, Bank of America provided more than $2.5 billion in new credit to small businesses in California, a 10% increase over 2014. Total small business lending in California was nearly $5.3 billion.

We are proud to serve as a sponsor and look forward to another great San Francisco Small Business Week. Throughout the week, we hope you take full advantage of the many opportunities to connect with and be inspired by other successful small business owners. Celebrate the culture of this vibrant city at the Flavors of San Francisco or the Citywide Sidewalk Sales and congratulate your fellow small business owners at the Small Business Awards. Thanks for continuing to help the Bay Area succeed!

Fearless Digital Marketing: Driving Leads to Small Businesses

Building the Perfect Elevator Pitch

Room: 502, 5th Floor · Topic: Marketing

Room: 504, 5th Floor · Topic: Marketing

Fear. It can be a crippling thing. And not taking advantage of digital marketing for your business because of fear? Catastrophic. In today’s technology-driven world, a business needs an online presence & foundation, simple as that. But you can’t stop there. What good is that website that’s never found, or those online reviews that are never read? Unfortunately, advertising isn’t like “Field of Dreams- Build it & they will come”. It takes knowing which tools & resources are available to actually get you those clients.

The ability to concisely and meaningfully articulate what your organization stands for and what the value is to a prospect is one of the most important elements of a brand’s development. For over 30 years, Gumas has been helping Challenger Brands build clear, focused Elevator Pitches that serve as the base customer-facing language for companies in all industries. This hands-on, interactive workshop will provide you with the simple tools you need to message your business. Presented by: Craig Alexander, SVP, Client Services, Gumas Sponsored by: Recology

Commercial Real Estate: Buying a home for your Business Room: 603, 6th Floor · Topic: Finance Join a panel of SBA commercial real estate financing experts, a commercial real estate broker and a small business owner who has successfully taken advantage of the SBA 504 loan program to grow his business. This free workshop is for small business owners, potential borrowers, real estate agents, commercial real estate brokers, financial planners, accountants, attorneys, architects, and anyone who wants to know more about commercial real estate ownership.

How many times have you “tried” advertising & felt like you didn’t get a return on your investment? How much time did you spend on it? Did you do it yourself? What did you do? Did it work? How do you know for sure? At first glance, driving leads to your business seams easy, right? It’s actually a very complex task. First you have to have a solid digital presence to actually send “leads” to. But let’s stop there- what is a lead? Is it a bunch of clicks or impressions to a website? Or, the “intent” of a search online? No. A lead, is a desired, actionable effort, like a phone call or an email, directly from your target market. But in order for that phone call or email to “convert” into a paying customer, you have to be able to quickly capture & keep their attention, & give them a reason to partner with you. In this workshop, you will learn about digital marketing & leaddriving advertising that will not only help you increase your business revenue month-over-month, but when done properly, give you a return on your business investment. More importantly, your business needs to be found by the kind of people you want to do business with, in the areas you want the business from, & through avenues where your target market is looking, to try & find you. The clock is ticking, get your phone ringing today! Presented by: Kristin Challandes, Digital Sales Manager, YP Marketing Solutions

Managing Your Most Important Asset: Online Reputation & Digital Presence Room: 502, 5th Floor · Topic: Marketing

What Do Lenders Look For

As a business owner, you have a million things to think about every single day. But, ask yourself these two questions: Does my business receive referrals? Do I rely on “word-of-mouth” for business growth?

Room: 603, 6th Floor · Topic: Finance

If the answer is yes, then pay attention! At some point, you might have asked yourself the following: Is online reputation really that important? Does my digital presence really matter? Do I really need advertising? Simply, the answer is YES. Reputation management is the practice of attempting to shape public perception of your business by influencing online information. This is important because your potential new customers are going online to validate what they might already know about you and your business as a whole. If they refer their friend to your business, but that friend can’t find you, or, can’t find anything consistent about you, they’ll likely turn to someone else.

Lenders obviously look at credit scores, but what else do they look for in a small business owner? Every lender defines the 5 C’s of credit a little differently. Come hear from three different lenders about what they’re looking for. Also on the panel is SBDC, a resource to entrepreneurs offering free one-on-one counseling on gaining access to capital. Co-Presented by: Mark Quinn (Moderator), District Director, US Small Business Administration, San Francisco District Office; Lynn Fernandez, Vice President of Lending, VEDC; Mark Raffield, Sr. Business Development Officer Wells Fargo SBA Lending, Wells Fargo; Angel Cardoz, SBDC; Carly Perera, Associate Director of Lending, Pacific Community Ventures Sponsored by: VEDC

Knowing that most of your target audience is looking online, whether it be desktop or mobile, it’s imperative that you’re not only found, but in the best light possible. Part of having an “online reputation” consists of having a solid digital presence, which includes a website. Consider it this way: Would you do business with someone who didn’t have a website or a good online reputation in 2016? Probably not. Because technology has evolved over the last 5-7 years, consumers are turning to things such as social media, review sites, local directories and search engines to try & find your website & business information. Only, they don’t know your name yet. Do something today that your future business self will thank you for: Get Online & Get Found! The time is now!
