METHOD

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is the largest pediatric medical center in Southern California. The new 494,283 SF, 317-bed building, named in honor of philanthropists Marion and John E. Anderson, provides acute-care pediatric facilities, diagnostic and ancillary services, and a Level I emergency department / trauma center, further expanding services and capabilities at the hospital’s main campus on Sunset Boulevard, as well as increasing the ability to provide family-centered care.

The site slopes from north to south, making the emergency and ambulance entry accessible at the ground level at the back of the site, and the hospital’s primary entrance, lobby, conference center, food service, and other public areas accessible at the first floor, off Sunset Boulevard at the front of the site. The second floor is dedicated entirely to comprehensive cardiac care, and includes outpatient cardiology, as well as a cardiac surgery clinic. This floor connects directly to the adjacent CVOR’s in the existing surgery unit. The ICU is located on the third floor. The fourth, fifth, and sixth floors accommodate acute care services. An emergency heliport for patient and organ transfers is located on top of the tower.

The massing of the building introduces a more varied, stepping form, both as a response to the recently completed neighborhood guidelines and to clearly express the functions of the building. Cladding systems are also richer and more varied in order to add a human scale and warmth to the character of the complex.

The new hospital was designed to address the unique environment of a pediatric facility while accommodating the needs of inpatients and caregivers from the diverse community.

The team worked with staff, parent focus groups, and patients to guide the development of a vision that would integrate the hospital’s missions of clinical excellence and family-centered care. Critical design issues that emerged focused on such topics as sleeping areas, living rooms inside and outside the care units, age-appropriate diversions within patient rooms and playrooms, access to familiar foods, adequate privacy, and outdoor spaces.

Patient rooms are designed to promote healing and reduce stress. There is optimal daylighting and access to views.

To foster and encourage family participation in the care of patients, dedicated space or “family zones” are included within every patient room, where the family has its own daybed, television, storage, wardrobe, and window. Outside the care units, there are other spaces in the building that cater to families, such as comfortable lounges, playrooms, and gardens.

Training and education facilities are also available for families.

MASTER PLAN AND IMPLEMENTATION In order to meet new state seismic standards, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles undertook a master planning effort in the late 1990s for their urban campus on Sunset Boulevard. The client’s need to build a replacement hospital created an opportunity to re-envision their entire 13-acre site, and its relationship to Sunset Boulevard and the broader community.

At the same time, architectural solutions needed to balance programmatic and security requirements faced by a regional healthcare facility that sees 287,000 patient visits each year.

The planning and design effort was structured to provide a strategic vision for the institution from the broadest issues in medical care, patient care, administration, operations, and development. It also included a study of specific program requirements to better serve clients, in addition to an economic model which looked at national trends, market demographics, and alternatives. This also involved land-use planning, the entitlement process, and a land acquisition strategy, as well as the analysis of environmental issues and future community plans. A series of precisely phased improvements was identified to make room for a new hospital building, a new research tower,

parking (both above- and below-ground), gardens, and various infrastructure improvements. Each had to be accomplished without impacting the day-to-day operations of the hospital.

With the completion of the new Saban Research Institute, existing research space on the campus could be relocated. A new patient arrival experience was also developed to provide a better link to the urban setting. The front of the existing hospital building was removed and replaced with a new lobby and entry pavilion. Patient drop-off through a new central driveway off of Sunset Boulevard (with a 453-space underground parking garage), along with a central pedestrian walk with wayfinding and public art elements, now leads patients from the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, and the bustling Metro portal, directly to the front door of the hospital. Two outdoor gardens flank the entry. The Healing Garden to the west features an educational garden, along with outdoor IV connections that accommodate gurneys to serve the most critically ill children needing to experience nature in a controlled environment. The Healing Garden to the east of the entry, offers a wheelchair accessible play structure.

ARCHITECTURE The variegated architecture of the Pavilion harmonizes with the Saban Research Institute and sets a new standard for contemporary architecture on the campus. The new building is clad in a rich palette of red sandstone, granite, glass, and painted aluminum panels to enliven the institutional surroundings.

Each function is clearly expressed through the different materials, as well as by segmented bays and wings.

This variation reduces the scale of the large building so it appears like an ensemble of buildings rather than a monolithic block. Rhythmic, glass-fronted bays supply daylight and access to views to humanize the patient rooms. From the outside, the main façade of faceted glass acts as a graphic billboard to announce the presence of the hospital on Sunset Boulevard.

The design takes advantage of the sloped site by maintaining the hospital’s primary entrance off Sunset Boulevard, yet accommodating separate, street-level Emergency Department access off of De Longpre Avenue, off the main spine. By locating parking below-grade, outdoor gardens could be placed at the street level, creating a new and more welcoming “front door” to the hospital.

As illustrated by the following plans, each floor of the hospital is organized to support two “neighborhoods” of 32-bed patient units. Patient rooms are grouped around a central core of nurses’ stations and staff spaces, and extend around the building perimeter so that every room has a window. Corridors also terminate in windows to provide daylight and views, and orient patients and visitors within the floor. These hallways are quieter than in most hospitals because staff routes for transferring patients and equipment are separated from public circulation.

Signage and graphics for the hospital have been tied to an overarching theme of Southern California’s geography, plants, animals, and landscape. Each geographically themed floor also features a primary color to help people orient themselves from floor to floor, and to add interest throughout the building.
