like the month of September. It earmarks the beginning of a new year without actually being a new year. For those in education, September brings a confusing barrage of emotions: excitement for making it into the year above, and fear of imminent exams, while for those in work, the month of September basically marks the end of summer and the start of autumn. Despite the reminder that bad weather is looming, I do like this transeasonal month, mainly for fashion week (the parties, shows and new collections − particularly the return of light coats and clothing in classic autumnal hues). So, to help you put your well-heeled foot forward, we’ve produced an educational fall shoot highlighting the key pieces you need to have, turn to page 28. ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE but I think the only downside to the whole One Day experience was a certain selfconsciousness – how do you write something that appeals to some of the same readers without being the same book in disguise? None of the uncertainties occupied my mind when I wrote One Day. This time around the critical voices were a little louder and more insistent, but I was determined not to write a half-hearted or disappointing follow-up. The book was longlisted for this year’s Man Booker prize. How did that feel? Wonderful in a very uncomplicated and unambiguous way. I knew immediately that the book wouldn’t win, but a degree of critical recognition is always appreciated.

Ahead of west London’s literary festival, Write on Kew, we catch up with author David Nicholls I n t e r v i e w r o m y va n d e n b r o e k e

Did you expect your novel One Day to be such a big hit? I’m not sure any writer expects a book to be a success. The process is so unpredictable and, like most authors I suspect, I always finish writing a novel and think ‘does this make sense, and will anyone be interested anyway?’ Why do you think it was so successful? I think it was as much about friendship as love. I think a lot of readers saw themselves in the book – everyone knows a Dexter or an Emma – and I think those ideas of fate, nostalgia, what might have been, are quite compelling.

What inspired the theme of revisiting the main characters every St Swithin’s Day for 20 years? Partly it came from reaching 40 and looking back at that journey. I wanted to write about how small decisions on seemingly ordinary days can have unseen results. I was also inspired by a short passage in Tess of the D’Urbervilles that I’d read when I was seventeen. To say more would be to give too much away, but the passage had always stayed with me, and I remember thinking ‘there’s a story there’. Was it hard writing your follow up novel, Us? I’m not sure writing a book is ever easy,

You’re also a screenwriter, how does that lend itself to writing novels? I think screenwriters are obliged to do certain things; to think about story structure, to plan, to make sure that every thing earns its place and has a purpose. Screenwriters tend to put up the scaffolding before they do the fun stuff – the dialogue, the jokes – and there’s a requirement to keep things moving. Also, as a screenwriter I do think a lot about performance – how would this scene look if you acted it out? All of that finds its way into the prose. What does it mean to you to be involved in Write on Kew? I went to Kew when I was about seven and thought it was an extraordinary place. The pagoda seemed immense. I’ve been back many times since and always love it. And it’s a new festival too – anything that allows readers and writers to get together seems like a good thing to me. Is there anyone during the festival that you are particularly looking forward to meeting or seeing? Years ago I wrote the screenplay to Blake Morrison’s fine memoir And When Did You Last See Your Father? He’s a wonderful writer and a fine speaker. Also Clare Tomalin has written wonderful biographies of two of my favourite writers, Hardy and Dickens, so if I can make it to those events I certainly will. Who is your writing hero? I think I’d choose a screenwriter. Billy Wilder is an idol of mine – versatile, brilliant at comedy and drama, a great wit and satirist. A fascinating life too. He’s been known to drink his own urine, scoff scorpions and sleep in a carcass. But Bear Grylls is also a family man I n t e r v i e w C A M I L L A D AV I E S

ometimes a TV star’s tough guy image seeps into the public consciousness. But former SAS man Bear Grylls, the face of Mission Survive, The Island and Escape From Hell, can’t help but give off the niceguy vibe. According to Bear, it’s not about the brawn: anyone with their wits about them can become a survivor. “Knowledge is such an important tool for survival, but a real key to it is about heart, the determination to keep going despite the pain. And that’s in all of us, it’s how we’re made,” he says. Bear himself learnt his survival instincts from an early age, exploring at weekends with his dad before joining the Scouts – today his official title is Chief Scout – and then the military. A back injury forced him to leave the army but after an impressively fast recovery, by the age of 23 he had succeeded in his goal of climbing Mount Everest, making him the youngest Brit to do so. “Survival is in us all, it takes a bit of scratching beneath the surface to find. And also practice.

The more you get used to hardships and discomfort the better you become at coping with it. It’s definitely in everyone, it’s just about grit and heart.” Of course, some people are more prone to the adventure bug than others. It seems Bear can’t stay still for long, and even at home he isn’t quite on solid ground, choosing to live on a barge along the Thames. “The houseboat is a great way of being in London,” he says. “You don’t necessarily feel like you are stuck in the middle of a big city and yeah, I love it. It’s a really good community, great views…” The idea of Bear in a semi-detached redbrick doesn’t quite compute, anyway.

His waterside home is his rest spot to recover from his stays in the wild. “We originally bought it when I was leaving the army and I got married. We were pretty broke and it was a fun way of us being in London.” Even now, three children on, the couple show no signs of jumping ship. “Many years later, we still don’t feel any temptation to go and get a big house in London. We love it, it is a wonderful thing in our lives and we’ll always love it.” If the family want to get somewhere quickly, their mode of transport sure beats the tube. “We have a little speed boat tied to the side and it’s a great way to be in London.” Bear may be a London boy, but he also owns St Tudwal's, a Welsh island, just off the South Caernarvonshire coast – which many would consider an unusual holiday home. He also spends time in the heart of TV world, Los Angeles. “But when we’re in London, we love it,” he says firmly. “We try to film during term time when the boys are at school… I try to be pretty disciplined about taking days off when they are at home, saying no to all the other fluff.”

Bear may crave time at home, but he’s aware that his 9-5 is very different to most Londoners’ jobs. “It’s never felt like a job. I love it, I work with my best friends, I get to travel the world, so I feel super lucky,” Bear grins. “I’ll probably pick up a few more scars and a few more aches and pains along the way but I’ll try and keep on going for as long as I can.” Tenacity is an important skill in Bear’s line of work, but he admits there have been times where he’s worried about where an adventure will be leading him. He says that the goal of any show he presents is always getting home in one piece. “There has been a tonne [of accidents], from parachute failures to being caught in rapids, chased by sharks

and crocodiles... but again I try to focus on the good times, the times it worked out. I always say to the crew that you only get it wrong once. If there is doubt, then there is no doubt, stop and we’ll reassess, no ego, we’ll find another way round it. It’s actually about getting it right rather than wrong.” He knows better than to be reckless – whether it’s swimming too close to crocodiles or simply biting the head off a tick. “Because we film so much of it, we are pretty smart as a team about managing risk and we’ve all learned the thing about no egos and bravado when we film. We make quiet, smart good

decisions, but once we decide on something we really go for it and throw ourselves into it.” Of course, occupational hazards do come with the job - otherwise Joe Public would be harpooning his dinner and frying beetles for an afternoon snack. “There is a tinge of recklessness that the wild demands, but I think the skill is knowing how to use that and when to use it,” Bear says. “But essentially, if we were just reckless in the stupid sense we wouldn’t still be here. It’s reckless in the sense that it does demand a little bravery pill to do something, but that is a kind of recklessness that is healthy. But as the crew say, we used to be 100% reckless and now we’re 70% reckless, so that is good progress.”

ather than a whimsical pampering experience, the Chiswick Spa and Massage salon is an altogether more straightforward establishment; something I loved about my hour long experience in the hands of one of their expert and matter of fact therapists. Not being particularly whimsical myself, I appreciated the methodical approach to my chosen treatment, and was soothed through my self-inflicted heavy handed Sports Massage by someone who had clearly studied her art − as opposed to someone painfully massaging my shoulder blades which, surprisingly, had happened elsewhere not too long ago. All too often my day runs away with me through work and family commitments, but finding that Spa and Massage was open to a staggering 11pm was nothing short of celebratory − I could put the baby to bed, dine with my husband, polish off any unanswered emails from the day, and then fully unwind without an ounce of guilt. Nothing but attentive and professional, you’re not going to be pandered to by the therapists at Spa and Massage (thank goodness I say). But what you will get is a thoroughly professional experience by therapists trained to the highest level and a body that feels a darn sight better than it did before walking through their doors. ◆

ndy Needham might not be Italian, but he understands ‘la cucina della mamma’ well, and has successfully brought Italian comfort food to Chiswick with the opening of his restaurant L’Amorosa. The carefully prepared menu brings back memories of holidays spent with Italian friends and their families, where they would eat authentic Italian meals using fresh local ingredients, such as bufala, bresaola and rucola. The relaxed atmosphere and attentive staff at L’Amorosa makes you feel

comfortable immediately, while the modest design and simple decor, complete with romantic touches such as shimmering candle, transforming it into an ideal date spot. The vast menu left us stumped, so we asked the chef to serve us his specials. To start, we were presented with a board of mini Italian classics to share: carasau bread, focaccia with cherry tomatoes and ricotta salata, ham and melon, bruschetta with girolle mushrooms sprinkled with summer truffles, and chunks of parmesan, all accompanied by a refreshing glass of Gavi di Gavi from Piemonte.

Then came burrata cheese with datterini tomatoes – the sweetest tomatoes I have ever tasted – served with a basil garnish and a side of grilled ciabatta bread. My dinner date and I also sampled the beef carpaccio with porcini, rocket and truffle mayonnaise. For the first course, I was presented with a plate of homemade tagliolini with porcini butter sauce and a grating of summer truffles. Just beautiful. And for main, the sirloin beef tagliata with grilled summer onions, roast new potatoes and salsa verde. I would usually steer clear of beef for fear of being served something too chewy or rare, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it delicate and tender. The finale however was chosen by us: chocolate ganache served with scrumptious, expertly creamy raspberry sorbet. The fig and almond crostata with vanilla ice cream was the perfect combination of crunch and fruitiness. If you go the whole hog and order four courses, like us, then beware, dessert may be hard to swallow. That said, I think I would happily eat the chocolate ganache all day, every day. Bellissimo. u

We selected the breathtaking regions of The Dordogne & The Lot in South West France, flying from London to Bergerac. Exploring the rich medieval history of the Midi Pyrenees is ideal for a holiday involving driving. Every corner driven ’round presents breathtaking views of rivers, towns and villages that could easily be mistaken for medieval film sets. Castles sit high on clifftops overlooking rivers, shrouded in early morning fog that dissipates as the sun rises to expose their majesty. Ancient towns and villages with their unmistakable tiled roof tops and warn yellow stone walls line the route each day. This region of France, famous for its walnut production, foie gras, asparagus, strawberries in summer and of course, the black truffle season in winter, is a must for any foodie. The wineries and

vineyards of the area beg to be explored and it is said that Malbec originated from the region. Picking up a BMW 4 series convertible from the airport (partners of Routes Du Bonheur) we drove with the roof down and the sun shining through lush green countryside and rolling forests to the small village of Tremolat, located between the valleys of Vezere and Dordogne an hour from the airport. Le Vieux Logis is a small, 4 star hotel (23 rooms, all overlooking the park and gardens) in the heart of the village. Built as a tabacco farm and converted in 1952 the hotel has a wonderfully relaxed charm to it, informal yet with perfect presentation, reception, hospitality and of course food. TRAVEL / FRANCE chairs allowing for views of the wonderful gardens. Each room is individually designed, period furniture sitting next to modern luxury throughout the hotel. The gardens are formal French, a stream runs through the middle of the lawns with a beautiful terrace for meals in the warmer months and a swimming pool looks inviting after a day of exploring with its cool, clear water. The hotel boasts two dining rooms, one the original tobacco-drying barn of the farm where dinner is served and the other a small bistro opposite the hotel. Food is seasonal and of course locally sourced by Arnould, traditional ingredients with modern concepts and presentation, every course was bursting with flavour. We started with asparagus and crab, as beautifully presented as it was delicious, followed by scallops with broad beans and truffle jus, followed by local lamb medallion with delicately spiced cous cous and herbed butter. A strawberry desert followed cheese, a delightful sorbet on a bed of meringue, strawberry compote and mint. We retired to The Fumoir (the feel of a hunting lodge, leather and dark woods) for brandy and coffee. Knowing where our next hotel was located, Chateau de Marcues, a route was planned for us by Le Vieux Logis ensuring to we saw the best of the region. We stopped atBeynac to visit the cliff top 14th century castle and for a delicious lunch before moving on to La Roque offering breath-taking views of the valley and finally to Dommea town where the Knights Templar were held prisoners in 1307. Set high above The Lot river and beautiful countryside sits the majestic 4 star Chateaux de Mercues, standing on

its pedestal since the 13th century. The hotel is a wonderful mix of modernity and antiquity. The courtyard at the heart of the hotel remains untouched by time, despite sipping the Chateau’s soft warm Malbec in comfort, it’s easy to imagine the great draw bridge in use in earlier centuries. Under the chateaux is an unexpected treasure; a staggering winery was built by the owner to produce the wine yielded from the grapes of his near by vineyard, The Chateaux De Malbec, 2009 is exceptional. Tours are available of the vineyard, well worth visiting, with meals offered in the perfectly converted barn and all wine tasted over the stay is on sale to ship or take home. Terraces and formal gardens lead to a beautiful outdoor pool – we explored the grounds listening to the river below before a tour of the cellars, sampling the range of wine made there. The Chateaux was home to the Bishops of Cahors for centuries and a chapel remains hidden in one of the turrets, the formal dining room is in the centre of the chateaux and was the

dining room of the Bishops. The food was exquisite, fresh, and beautifully presented while the setting offered views over The Lot river. Our rooms were large and welcoming with the need of every guest preempted and catered for. The hotel has 24 rooms, all decorated individually to reflect the different centuries the Chateau has seen as well as six apartments. The whole Chateaux is available for private hire and would make the most wonderful venue for a wedding or celebration. The final hotel on our route was the truly exceptional Chateau de la Treyne. Overhanging the Dordoyne as though it floats on the edge of the river and set in 300 acres of private parkland the position and the hotel itself are both breathtaking. With only 14 rooms you feel like you are a guest of a home rather than a hotel, that said a perfectly presented home with a truly exceptional hostess, Stephanie Gombert. The hotel is clearly loved by both its staff and all guests, comfortable and relaxed yet incredibly luxurious and lavish. We were taken to our rooms, the Dordoyne suite, a beautiful set of rooms with a terrace offering spectacular views over the river. The peace and tranquillity of the terrace was incredible, a warm light bathed everything it touched and the scent of lilac rose up from the walls below. I have rarely been happier than sitting with a drink soaking up the sun and listening to the sounds of nature. A welcome of black cherry compote and luxurious homemade pastries were laid out in the dressing room and the suite itself was spacious and welcoming. Hermes toiletries sat next to a bath that was almost big enough to swim in. We drank aperitifs on a beautiful terrace where all meals are served in the summer months, watching the sun set. Dinner was served in the Louis XIII salon, restored to it original glory. The food was delicious, Stephane Andrieux presides over the kitchen. The love that goes in to each dish is obvious, as is the award of a Michelin Star. ‘I like dishes that stimulate the taste buds and play on acidity and bitterness.’ His foie gras, uncooked and marinated between two spicy crusts was a delight, as were the lamb chops. Wine was served to suit each dish and the cheese board ensured we stayed at our table for far longer than we had planned to. I ordered breakfast for the room, delicious tiny omelets, fresh fruit, pastries and coffee eating on the terrace and wishing I could make this my home. The route to happiness? Absolutely. u

ou probably know the last XC90: it was certainly around for long enough. Car companies usually stick fairly rigidly to a product lifecycle of around seven years for their models but, for various reasons, the large SUV was around for 13. It remained popular, though, being one of Volvo’s best-selling cars in the UK. This second-generation XC90 will no doubt be even more sought-after, thanks to its mix of minimalist Scandi design, high-quality materials and practicality. This is a school-run family taxi and weekend getaway car with a large side helping of luxury. Let’s start with its most obvious feature: its exterior design. Volvo tested the waters with a number of concept cars at international motor shows, cars that were met with critical acclaim and a host of awards. On the XC90, the smooth, unfussy surfaces, large glazed areas and features such as distinctively stylish LED

lights all combine to create what is an undoubtedly elegant car – not easy for a large SUV. The cabin follows suit, the soft leathers, Scandinavian wood and stainless steel accents combining with a real sense of craftsmanship to create a relaxed ambiance. Plus there’s all the latest tech, including a large iPad-like screen in the centre console for the navigation, and controlling the infotainment functions. Relaxation is also the watchword for the XC90’s performance on the road. Supremely comfortable – it will take speed humps and potholes in its stride – and endowed with excellent handling, plus a choice of efficient petrol or diesel engines (with a plug-in hybrid due in 2016), it is a real pleasure to drive. And it wouldn’t be a Volvo without arguably the most comprehensive array of safety features in any car currently on the road. All of which surely makes the XC90 a car for all seasons.

Through a mixture of forthright opinions, battle-hardened negotiation tactics and no little glamour, Allsopp has played her part in Location, Location, Location becoming one of Channel 4’s most watched shows of a generation. And he plays his cards very close to his chest so I don’t know what he’s got planned at the moment, but there’s always something up his sleeve.” Andersen is a property developer, so Allsopp’s trust is hardly misplaced. since 2006 will surmise that the 43-yearold hasn’t always surrendered influence when it comes to decor. Formerly two flats knocked through to create a spacious dream family home, the interior of this 1950s building has all the idiosyncratic hallmarks that regular viewers of Location and Kirstie’s Homemade Home will recognise as Allsopp traits. From the kitchen table tops that used to belong to a school science laboratory to the large vintage wooden wardrobe situated next to a fridge, her homespun vintage chic is everywhere. Though Allsopp has in the past, perhaps somewhat disingenuously, called her home “the ugliest house on the street”, there is no doubt that it has helped Allsopp and family - Andersen, their two sons Bay and Oscar and Andersen’s two sons from a previous relationship - settle in Notting Hill. Allsopp happily refers to herself as a “west London girl”, and says that it is the area, not the house, that keeps her local. Just as on the television, Allsopp talks enthusiastically and passionately about the things she believes in, and when the subject of conversation turns to local amenities, it’s no different to hearing her discuss with Phil a living room space she is particularly fond of. So whether it’s her mother-in-law’s shop - “she has the most beautiful antiques shop called The Lacquer Chest on Kensington Church Street” - or her favourite restaurant “I’m a huge fan of Bill Granger, I go to his restaurant quite a lot and I have his recipe book” - Allsopp is at her jovial best. She reserves special praise for Portobello Road and Golborne Road Market.

ALLSOPP’S OUTBURSTS ARE INFAMOUS “I’m a big, big supporter of them. For me, that is absolutely the heart of Notting Hill and I love my time there and I go there on a lot. I go to the markets on Friday morning and it’s a huge thing for me – those are my real local issues, protecting Portobello Road and the Golborne Road from development and people trying to change what goes on there. I think it’s very special and so I’m very keen to protect that.” It’s no revelation to hear Allsopp talk up Notting Hill’s market places - the vintage and the homemade have always been huge passions. Her love of craft has permeated her work - she presented spinoff series such as Kirstie’s Handmade Britain and Kirstie’s Handmade Treasures - and in September she will

once again host The Handmade Fair at Hampton Court, which brings together designers, artisans and hobbyists for talks, workshops and stalls selling handmade wares. “We encourage people to come and experiment with different crafts. So if you’ve never done anything or you like the idea of it or you buy things but not necessarily try them out, it’s got something for everyone. So you can come and just go to the talks and the demos and meet and greet with likeminded crafters, or if you want to see the best of what’s out there, that’s an option too. It’s a day out, an experience not just a shopping trip.” That is at the start of autumn, but before that Allsopp will spend the summer between her Devon holiday home and Notting Hill, where she is keen to pick back up her summer hobby. It isn’t what you might expect. “Our big thing with the kids whenever we’re not busy and have some time off and not in Devon, is we all have scooters.” As unlikely as it may seem, that actually is the royal “we”. “I have an adult scooter called the Speedy Scooter, it’s a British made adult scooter and we scoot about lots, going down to the market, down to Hyde Park, it’s a great way to get around. I really recommend it to everybody. My children scoot, I think it’s fantastic.” So if you think you’ve seen Kirstie Allsopp literally scooting along the Portobello Road, it seems like your eyes were not deceiving you. ◆

There is a great choice of outdoor furniture, which would sit quite happily in the most elegant of interiors. Choose furniture with cushions that can be left out all summer and stored in winter. Store them in a weatherproof bench or ottoman so they are available when needed. Today’s weatherproof fabrics feel luxurious and come in a great range of classic colours. Use them as a simple backdrop for cushions and throws, which are perfect to cuddle-up underneath. Think of your outdoor space as having four walls and a ceiling to form the perfect, exclusive area in which to relax, entertain, and dine. Create the illusion of walls with simple horizontal trellises, evergreen planting in pots or planters, or rows of pleached trees. The ceiling could be a garden shade, sail or wooden pergola from which lighting can be hung. Raising or lowering the seating area can have the same effect. Think about how you wish to utilise the space. This will help you to select appropriate furniture. Different styles and heights of seating produce an informal party atmosphere, while a large table and Panton style chairs lends to stylish dining. Consider a colour palette and style that reflects the inside of your home. You want the garden to be an extension of your personal taste. Include sculptures or large pots to add interest.

Lighting is vital in transitioning a daytime lunch into evening drinks. It also helps to generate the perfect ambience. Select from solar lights, external chandeliers, standard lamps, fairy lights, LED candles and lanterns. All of them give a different feel, so choose your lighting to suit your entertaining habits. Fire pits and braziers are also readily available and create warmth as well as a focal point. Look at the sleek stainless steel Brasero Fire Pit from Italian company Gandia Blasco. Shade is essential. An umbrella or sail plays a key role in comfort and should be large enough to shade the seating and, ideally, be able to tilt to give added flexibility. For a very large area, you may need more than one.

t’s time to stop complaining that your outside space is too small to do anything with. Start thinking outdoor room – it’s no longer a 90’s cliché but a London reality with limitless possibilities when it comes to purpose and style. Treating walls and boundaries as the main event is crucial in all of our urban garden designs. Boundaries either disappear or we make them so much of a feature that no one would ever think ‘fence’ again. There are now a huge range of products and well developed garden design features available to transform your space from simple DIY projects to schemes that involve the professionals. The first consideration is what to grow. Our most popular schemes are for full or part shade because even the sunniest south facing gardens can get blocked by a loft conversion or neighbouring extension. Transform a shady wall by planting a range of evergreen ferns, heuchera and liriope in small pots or upcycled containers attached to the wall with wire and hooks. Water these as often as you can and they will reward you with a stunning effect that leaves the ground free for furniture and entertaining. For sunnier spots try growing the ever fashionable echiveria, sedum or creeping thyme in similar containers.

For the more culinary creative amongst us, utilise outdoor walls and boundaries using hanging pouches and grow bags. If you are a fair-weather gardener then the simplest herbs and leaves for yummy quick salads are cut and come again lettuce, basil and peas for fresh pea shoot salads and garnishes. These can all be grown from seed on a windowsill or bought as young plants from the garden centre. For the ultimate urban escape full of evergreen colour and texture then opt for a permanent living wall. Covering a whole wall particularly when looking out of a large expanse of glass will give the ultimate wow factor and is equally as stunning at night with the addition of a well designed lighting scheme. 

Head Space Psychometric profiling is increasingly being used in the education arena Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

“Y

ou’ve taken my soul and put it into a book.” So said a Year 10 girl on reading the results of her psychometric profile. Having read the 38 pages (yes, that’s 38) of computer-generated self-analysis produced when I completed my own profile – the Insights Discovery Personal Profile, no less – I find it hard to disagree with the sentiment. I dashed off 25 multiple choice questions in 10 minutes – what I got back was page after page of my inner workings laid bare. Not always 100% accurate but mostly on the nail and eerily prescient. In schools, psychometric profiling is on the up – it’s long been used in the corporate sector –but it is now being increasingly used in the education sector. At the HMC annual conference earlier this year (the Headmaster’s and Headmistress’s Conference is the association of leading independent schools), headmaster Jon Reid from Larbert High School described the extraordinary successes his school achieved after using a psychometric evaluator to improve pupil performance. Colfe’s School in south-east London uses psychometric profiling for its Year 11s to help make career and university choices and there are a number of educational consultancies on the web offering profiling to enhance your child’s learning. Ian Wigston, the co-founder of Bright Field Consulting, uses the Insights Discovery Profile, a psychometric evaluator built around the personality models originally developed by Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung. The Insights model is based around a colour wheel of four personality types: the extroverts Fiery Red and Sunshine Yellow; and the introverts Cool Blue and Earth Green.

PSYCHOMETRIC PROFILING to help Year 11s make CAREER & university CHOICES Each personality has many variations, strengths and weaknesses. For example, on a good day a Fiery Red personality can be strong-minded and purposeful, on a bad day they might be controlling and aggressive. As Wigston puts it, “the Insights Discovery Profile is a questionnaire which uses 25 bits of data to come up with a picture of the individual”. The “craft of it” is that, despite being entirely created by clever algorithms and tech wizardry, its ‘voice’ is very human. You feel like you have sat down with an eminent psychologist. Bright Field Consulting works with school leadership teams, particularly if there are new team members. As Wigston says, the profile “gives us a picture of

the DNA of the team”. This can help greatly with improving efficiencies and performance. It is important work: there is more burnout in the teaching profession these days than in any other, apart from foreign exchange brokers. Wigston should know, he used to be a banker. The Insights profile can also help school children. Using the Insights Young Adult Profile for 15-year-olds plus, can, for example give “us a picture of why they might struggle with certain subjects” says Wigston. They have worked successfully with a variety of schools, including Thornhill Community Academy, the school featured in Educating Yorkshire and the Woodard Corporation, which numbers Lancing College and Ardingly College amongst its independent schools. Where it gets really interesting is the work Bright Field has done with both the teachers and the students in the same school. By gaining a psychological understanding of both, they have come up with some interesting ideas, not least that, in some cases, so-called bad behaviour in class or lack of academic attainment are sometimes because of a mismatch between teaching styles and students. Certain personalities learn in certain ways. As Wigston says: “If we work only with the leadership team or only with students –we can deliver that part of the equation – but if we work on both then we can say, this is how the pedagogy could be, in order to effect better results.” But before every pushy parent runs out to get their child profiled, take note. Wigston says that using a psychometric profile “is only one way of enabling a conversation to take place”. It should only be used in conjunction with coaching or guidance for that individual. Trust me, if you go down this route, you want somebody holding your hand. u

am so excited about expanding the Savills network into Ealing with our new office opening at 3 The Green – it could not be a better location for us. As head of the West London region, I started my career in agency over two decades ago, joining Savills in 1996. It feels like a long time since I left school to embark on a career as a chef at Claridges in Central London, unfortunately my culinary skills have since evaporated. Despite growing up in the country, my heart now belongs to West London. I have lived in the area for over 10 years with my family, so you might have spotted me cycling between the West London offices during the week. The area has so much to offer, particularly the incredible parks, which I have thoroughly explored on early morning walks with Fennel, our ‘sprocker’ spaniel. Otherwise, I might be caught grabbing a coffee to satisfy my enduring caffeine addiction. From Hammersmith to Shepherd’s Bush, across to Chiswick and up to Ealing, I have enjoyed selling a vast range of

The market in West London is thriving following May’s election; much of the deferred demand from the pre-election period has now flowed back into the prime market. I expect this to continue for the remainder of 2015 well into 2016 since the removal of the mansion tax threat from the market. The local community is at the heart of what we do as estate agents and I like to be strongly involved; our Chiswick office is the main sponsor of the Bedford Park Festival and the Chiswick Book Festival. In Shepherd’s Bush we support the St. Stephen’s Church of England School, where we are helping them create a new school library. On a Sunday morning, you are likely to find me attempting to coach the under 6’s at Wasps training ground off of Twyford

Avenue, and my son and daughter are both at school locally, close to our home in Ealing. Focusing on our new office in Ealing, I expect this area of West London to witness significant growth over the next few years. Property values in West London become better the further west you go, and in Ealing there remains great value for money. The local landscape is changing rapidly with the much publicised arrival of Crossrail in early 2018. From cutting journey times to elevating property prices along the line, Ealing has much to benefit from Crossrail. Our high street is evolving particularly fast with fashionable restaurants and shops opening. As one of the most influential infrastructure upgrades to take place in the capital for many decades, Crossrail will introduce a whole new demographic of buyers and renters who may not have previously considered the area. CONSERVATION CRAZY Is London becoming one huge conservation area?

ou may not realise it but more and more areas of London are being hyperprotected from change. There are 1,014 conservation areas in London (out of 10,000 nationally) that are increasingly eating up streets in the capital – with new areas being proposed in Brockley, South London as well as Dalston and Stratford. Some boroughs are keener than others: Lambeth, Tower Hamlets, Richmond-upon-Thames and Westminster all have more than 50 conservation areas – the average is around 30 – while Barking and Dagenham have just four. Croydon gets the top gong though, with nine of its 20 conservation areas created during a flurry of activity during 2008. Yet London is unique: it’s the only city in which Historic England can designate conservation areas as well as local planning authorities. But what exactly is a conservation area? Officially, it’s an area of ‘special historic or architectural interest,’ but they vary enormously and include small passageways, parks, industrial and transport heritage sites, remnants of small villages, town centres and, sometimes, entire areas – West Putney being a good example. Some

are stranger, like Botwell in Hayes, which contains the site of Nestlé’s former coffee factory. So, what is it like to live in a conservation area? One thing is for sure: figures show that conservation is good for house prices. In 2012 the London School of Economics (LSE) completed an exhaustive study of house prices and the results were eye-popping: raw data showed that conservation areas had a price premium of 23.1%, while even those waiting to become one were 16.5% more expensive than surrounding areas. Even if you take out factors such as existing architectural beauty and location, the research showed that even at a most conservative estimate, the price boost is between 8.5% and 9.5%. Also, conservation areas tend to rise in value faster than others – by 0.2%. What’s also interesting is that the people who live in conservation areas don’t mind the sometimes draconian architectural and planning laws that come with residency. The LSE canvassed residents in ten different areas and most, regardless of the downsides, appreciated their green, residential environment, neighbourliness and community spirit. These qualities must be amazing as the rules of living in a conservation are tough. For example, Hounslow’s conservation area around Gunnersbury Gardens Estate and Bedford Park regulates a range of alterations that include extensions, minor works, extra porches, exterior painting, new fencing, vehicle access and hardstanding – many changes that outside a conservation area would be allowed.

Conservation areas are not always leafy suburbs, with 85% of Westminster and 70% of Kensington and Chelsea protected within a conservation area. Meanwhile the early Georgian streets in the Elder Street conservation area, Spitalfields were recently saved from the developers’ wrecking ball. But what do you do if you have a more modest development proposal? The overriding question you need to ask yourself is whether the changes will ‘enhance’ or ‘preserve’ the area’s character. For example, an innovative new-build might enhance the area while an ugly extension wouldn’t preserve it. You have to “carefully assess what’s there, and how your new design measures up against the existing,” says Housebuilding & Renovating magazine’s design expert, Pete Tonks. But whether such considerations stretch to the world of aspic preservation, is for you to decide. u
