We all know that the Deepings are a great place to live but when a guest enthuses as Councillor Bob Adams, newly elected leader of SKDC, did at the recent Deeping St James Parish Council Annual Parish Meeting, then it makes us all doubly proud! In fact you didn’t have to be an Adams to be in pride of place at the event held in the Deepings School in May, but it certainly helped. This years Making a Difference Awards were presented by Kayleigh Adams of Deeping St James who is in the under 20’s GB Triathlon team and was the first across the finish line at the World Championships in Canada last September which has given her a pre-qualification place in Chicago later this year. Kayleigh not only shared the stage with Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams but also his birthday as well. Martin, three times world darts champion and great community supporter became the first Freeperson of Deeping St James. Making a difference to others is second nature to the people of the Deepings and this issue continues to pay tribute to those who have put and continue to put the heart into our community. 3

Members of the WI centenary organisation committee
Deeping Osteopaths celebrated their first anniversary at their premises in Church Street, Market Deeping this June. After nine years in the Community Centre, Osteopath, Michael Oldfield made the step to a high street position and says “We really haven’t looked back, the Community Centre was a great place for us to start but now we have room to host both a nutritionist and and an acupuncturist as well so we have a great offer here for the people of Deeping!”

Inspiring women for 100 years, the WI, although closely associated with jam making and the singing of Jerusalem, is clearly much more. A look at the impressive exhibition mounted by the DSJ WI along with the Lunchtime WI and the Deeping St Nicholas WI in celebration of the centenary was an impressive display of the far reaching talents of the group. As Sue Sheppard, current president said,. “The exhibition was a lovely opportunity for the three Deeping WI’s to come together to celebrate the centenary of the movement in England and Wales as well as showcasing our individual WI’s.
The 4th Annual Tractor Run, staged by Newborough Young Farmers Club to raise money for the Club and for East Anglian Air Ambulance, took place on Sunday 17th May. Some local residents were fortunate enough to witness the magnificent site of these tractors driving through the centre of Market Deeping. 7

Nicola pays tribute to First World War hero Market Deeping Tang Soo Do club took 25 students to the National Championships in Coventry and had great success brining back more than 40 trophies. Congratulations to all who competed. Visit www.marketdeepingtsd.co.uk for more details of the club.
Travelling from her home in Melbourne Australia, Nicola Allen (pictured left) was able to visit the Deepings for the launch of the Book that recorded the commemoration of the centenary of the First World War in the Deepings. Her forebear, William Newborn Plowright having emigrated from his home in Church Street, Market Deeping to Canada, traveled back through his homeland to France where he became a stretcher bearer. Along with many Canadians he was killed at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Completely unscripted, Nicola met up with two other descendants at the launch, Sally Clipson and Emma Parnell (pictured centre and right). Life in WW2 Deeping Edited by Keith Simpson for Deepings Heritage, the four notebooks kept by Sgt. Gordon Crowson of the Special Constabulary during World War Two, form the basis of a new book giving a unique insight into life in the Deepings at this time. Lavender blue, dilly dilly, Rosemary green, When I am King, dilly dilly, you shall be Queen Swathes of blue flowers gently wafting in the breeze, delicious scent and squadrons of butterflies and bees… you could be standing in a field in Provence or you could be transported back in time to a field near where you are now in Market Deeping. Lavender was reported in the Stamford Mercury as being grown in this area as far back as 1750. Records show that it was first introduced into this country around 1568 and we can speculate that not long after that it was grown here. It was, of course, grown in the South of France before that and it was certainly known to the Romans. In Elizabethan times it was used for medical purposes, flavouring food and creating love potions; today it is used for perfuming cosmetics and soaps, making pot pourri, lavender water and flavouring food. Lavender production reached its zenith here in the nineteenth century, largely due to the business skills of William Holland, known locally as Squire Holland. He was the second child of Dr William and Sarah Holland and was born on 21st November 1818 in Church Street, Market Deeping at the family home, Holland House. Trained as a chemist by Dr Page of Market Deeping, he achieved his MPS (Member of the Pharmaceutical Society) status in 1840 and was then able to help his father make medicines at the distillery. William married into a wealthy Irish Protestant land-owning family in 1854, when he wed Amelia Roper in Brighton, and was able greatly to expand the business after his father’s death in 1851. Lavender was grown in the fields around the distillery, in what is now Still Close, and also on Mr Holland’s fields at Langtoft, Baston and Deeping St Nicholas, where remains of this industry can still be found. It was said that you could smell Deeping before you saw it! continued >

Just before harvest time, gypsy caravans would arrive in Godsey Lane, then known as Tinker’s Lane. Both young and old would help with picking the flowers, cut just as they were beginning to fade. The lavender was tied into sheaves and taken to the distillery as soon as possible. At the distillery the cut plants were put into a retort, a large vessel partly full of water. This was closed with a lid or door and then heated. As the water reached boiling point a mixture of steam and oil rose from it, which ran through a pipe to a condenser. The steam and oil turned back into liquid and was fed into another pipe to a separator or large tank, where the oil floated to the top and the water drained away. This lavender water was not wasted though, as the ladies of Deeping would be waiting at the distillery door with their bottles to be filled, when it was cool, for a few pence. Lavender water was used for personal washing but also for washing clothes, helping to keep moths away with its disinfecting properties. Mr Holland sold his lavender oil for medicinal purposes and was also a supplier to Yardley’s soap works in London. Lavender was also used to tend battlefield wounds, as it has anti-bacterial and antifungal properties.
On his death in 1899, Squire Holland left a fortune of £34,000 and the business was taken over by Richardson’s of Leicester. This company were medical suppliers and pill manufacturers and had been one of Holland’s major suppliers. It was managed by Richard Stroud until 1909 and was then taken over by Auguste Payen (pictured left), a carpenter by trade who used the company as a paying hobby. In March 1916 it ceased to be known as Holland’s Distillery and was sold to Mr Joennson of Market Buildings, Missing Lane, East London; it was known simply as the herb farm in Kelly’s 1919 Directory.

While in 1916, ‘The Perfumery and Essential Oil Record’ reported that there were a few lavender fields in Market Deeping, they were ploughed up and turned over to potatoes during the First World War, due to food shortages. Wholesale production may have ended but it hasn’t meant the end of a love affair with lavender!

Is there a doctor in the house? Dr Heywood looks back In 1964, when Dr and Mrs Heywood first came to the imposing house on the corner of the Market Place and Stamford Road, the Doctor’s House for over 150 years, it was not only leaky and cold but Dr Heywood found amputation and post mortem equipment in the loft! Taking over the surgery from Dr Fraser, an Aberdonian Scot, after 30 years, the waiting room was the little cottage next door at number three and the surgery was in the house. With no staff (although ably assisted by wife Kathleen, previously a Ward Sister at Stamford Hospital) records were found as each patient came in and, after diagnosis, the Doctor counted out the pills. Dr Fraser, loathe to employ a member of staff to do so, had rolled the pills himself as had been the custom; for example, he used dried foxglove leaves (providing unpredictable dosages) for the preparation of Digoxin, a treatment for heart conditions. Three Doctors covered an area about the size of the Isle of Wight (containing about 10,000-11,000 patients) which included Littleworth, Wilsthorpe, Baston, Tallington, Maxey, Bainton, Glinton and Peakirk. Dr Douglas practised from Fairfax House in Deeping Gate, and Dr Barling covered Peakirk from a surgery in Glinton. Trained at St Thomas’s in London and serving his first two years as a GP in the mining town of Ilkeston, Dr Heywood’s modern techniques were not what the locals were used to. 14
This was still a largely farming community with many living in tied cottages and deferring to their farming employers. Providing a 24-hour service, seven days a week, the relationship between the GP and the community was more personal than it is today. On one hard Monday Dr Heywood saw 99 patients in his surgery and went on 34 home visits, essential for the villages, whose residents had sparse access to transport. Days would start at 8.00 a.m. and often not did not finish until 9.00 p.m. Dr Heywood, the father of three young sons, was acutely aware of the lack of recreational facilities in the area and, wanting to promote healthy living, helped to set up the Market Deeping Sports and Social Club when the Cricket Club, of which he was Secretary, was unceremoniously removed from a field at White House Farm. As a Market Deeping (then) Parish Councillor, of which he was Chairman for four years, Dr Heywood, with Town Clerk Effrys Jones, helped to set up the Scouts in Market Deeping in one of the Nissan huts previously used by RAF Langtoft. He also lent his strong support to District Councillor Betty Opperman, who fought for the Leisure Centre to be built in the Deepings, and for green space to be part of planning consents. As Chair of the Governors of the Deepings School he was instrumental in appointing Dr Bryers as Head and ultimately ensuring that the School had its own Sixth Form. With the growth of the community, it became apparent that the Doctor’s surgery was too small and with Jim Curly, a Market Deeping Parish

Councillor, Dr Heywood oversaw the building of the Fire and Police Station and Health Centre in 1972 in the grounds of Wade House, which had been sold to Lincolnshire County Council for £55,000. Almost too small even when it was first built, it housed seven doctors and, taking advantage of becoming a fund-holding practice, was able to provide a counsellor, Health Visitor for the elderly and the equipment to undertake minor operations. With more doctors on the patch, night visits and weekends on-call were shared on a rota basis, though Dr Heywood advocated that each doctor kept their own personal list so that invaluable patient knowledge was retained.

Immunisation was one of the changes that had the most impact over the years and Doctor Heywood was proud that his practice was the first in the country to undertake mass immunisation against meningococcal meningitis, following an outbreak of four cases in one day. Thackers Way was being built at the time and building stopped to allow buses of schoolchildren to be brought to the health centre, where volunteers were pressed into action, and there was widespread media coverage. ‘Overall,’ he recalls, ‘it would have been difficult to run a bad practice in the Deepings. We had a strong team and with only small pockets of deprivation, people on the whole embraced exercise, and good food, and are articulate and interested.’ Leaving the Centre in good shape, the farewell party held at the House, which had seen many family parties, was for fifty staff and their partners: quite a change from the lone practice of the 1960s. 15

This allows someone to act if there’s a problem in your home and reduces your inconvenience if you lose your keys while away.

Secure your special stuff!
Carry out a review and maintenance of your external lights, burglar alarm, doors, windows and locks including your garage and shed. Use a reputable locksmith if you are considering a change or upgrade of locks. Don’t leave anything outside which can be used to gain access to your property such as ladders and tools. A tidy, well-kept garden is more difficult for undesirables to hide in and gives the illusion that there’s someone at home.
Consider leaving small sized valuables; jewellery, laptops, important personal documents etc. with family or friends during your absence. A reputable home safe is a must although the standard size whilst reasonable to buy is relatively small in capacity.
Alarm bells? Clean up your burglar alarm box/cover. If it looks uncared for it’s a sign to a burglar that your alarm is possibly outdated, not working or that it’s a dummy box. Bourne Outdoor Pool Pack up the kids and a picnic and head up to the Bourne Outdoor Pool for a relaxing afternoon. The 50yd pool is perfect if you want to swim a few lengths, or just splash around. Otter Playground at Ferry Meadows This is water fun, but on a smaller scale than the others; however, it’s plenty big enough for preschoolers (and lots of fun). Water comes out of a small water pump and flows into a rock pool and down a series of rills into the sand at the bottom. Kids love damming the rills and creating little pools for the water in the sand. The Otter Playground is right by the visitor’s centre and café, which has a wide choice of food and drinks. 19

Beach at Rutland Water The ‘beach’ at Rutland Water was new last year and was a big hit with families. It is a man-made sandy area at the Sykes Lane car park. The beach is open seven days a week over the school holidays and there are lifeguards on duty whenever the beach is open. The lifeguards will monitor wind speed, direction and water temperature throughout the day to ensure it is safe and enjoyable for people to be in the water.
Stanwick Lakes Stanwick Lakes is a bit of a trek from Deeping, but it is well worth the trip. There is so much to do for kids of all ages. The big adventure playground incorporates water, so be sure to take swim suits, as the kids are bound to get wet. For older children (and adults) there is an assault course. Didn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to …. Skegness! Throughout the year Miss Crowson and her helpers organised whist drives and socials to raise money to pay for the transport and tea. The outing took a great deal of hard work and planning and it was a highlight of the year for children, as most people in those days could not afford a holiday of any description. The Church Sunday School outing of August 1927 in three modern buses owned by Mr Haines was made possible after Mr Haines applied for licences to travel to local towns and drew up a timetable. Until then, his first bus had been a twenty seater with an entrance at the rear. On Saturdays they went to Hop Pole and took passengers to Spalding for the evening. It was so popular, as so many people wanted to come home late, that they were standing down the centre of the
aisle and there was no room for Mr Haines’ daughter, Lizzie, who had to sit on the outside step with the door open. There were no designated bus stops; Mr Haines and his drivers stopped wherever his passengers wanted. Only those who can remember the 1920s can appreciate the excitement of preparing for the day, which caused almost an exodus from the village. The row of buses looked impressive lined up along Church Gate – they were small thirty seaters with a maximum speed of thirty miles an hour. People converged on them from all directions: Mothers loaded with bags while guiding their toddlers, older children with buckets and spades, fearing the buses might go without them. Friends greeted friends and all greeted Miss Crowson to find out which bus to board. When everyone was settled the Vicar, continued >

Reverend Pain, a scholarly aesthetic bachelor, came along to give a nod of approval and set off, much later, in his own car. At last the cavalcade set off. It was quite a sight, with children cheering and excitedly looking out of the windows and remarking about everything they passed: cows in fields, trains, the river in Spalding, windmills and most important the weather – please don’t let it rain! After about an hour and a half ’s travelling there was a stop at Boston and more exploring. Even the chain pulling at the toilet was a fascinating novelty! After another steady ride the excitement grew with each mile until the flat plain became the outskirts of Skegness, followed by the shops and cafes of Lumley Road and at last a sight of the clock tower. Finally there was the sea! Everything was different, the air, the smells, the space. Everyone was all set to enjoy this day of days.
There was still time to go to the amusements or for a final paddle before the buses were loaded and set off for home.

A tea at the Tower restaurant was part of the treat. Once again Miss Crowson presided over the proceedings, while the Reverend Pain looked in to say grace and smile benignly upon his happy sun-kissed flock, before returning home in his car. Everyone enjoyed the sweets and cherries Miss Crowson provided for the return journey. Children sang and talked about their adventures until, tired by sea and fresh air, they had to give in and fall asleep. People who had stayed at home congregated at the Cross awaiting the arrival of the travellers and eagerly greeted their own, gladly carrying their sleeping children and soggy bags and hearing the stories of all the day’s adventures.

Plant two fuschias in the container. They will also be in flower now and they will create a pretty display through the summer months. In September/October their fruits can then be eaten or whizzed up in a blender, frozen in ice cube containers and added to drinks. Alternatively, they can be added to salads or fruit salads where they will give a peppery taste.

Now you can pick your jewel-like blackcurrants and fresh juicy strawberries. Wash and whizz them up in a blender. The puree can be frozen in ice cube containers for use later or you can use it straight away for your delicious summer drink.

Take a large bowl, a punch bowl, usually glass with cups hanging round the sides, this will make a nice centre piece on a summer table; they can often be dusted off from the back of a cupboard or bought for a song at a car boot sale or charity shop.

Place your strawberry and blackcurrant puree in the bowl and add four parts ice cold fizzy water to one part lderflower cordial. The recipe for Elderflower Cordial was in the May/ June issue of I’d rather be in Deeping or it is possible to buy Elderflower Cordial from the Deeping Fudge Tea Rooms at Swines Meadow Farm Nursery, junction of Linchfield Rd and Towngate East.

While everything has changed in the world since those heady times when Brooke and his coterie including Virginia Woolf enjoyed taking afternoon tea at The Orchard, very little has changed here. It is possible to walk or cycle to The Orchard across the meadows from Cambridge or brace yourself and head down the A14 and you will be transported back in time taking tea on dark green deckchairs under the boughs of ancient apple trees or treat yourself to lunch at the Pavilion. St Guthlac’s Church Fete A high point in the summer calendar is St Guthlac’s Church Fete, this year to be held in the Rectory Garden on Saturday 11th July at 2.00 pm. Deepings Carnival
This year the Deepings Carnival will host it’s first bonnie baby competition. This will take place on the John Eve Field on Sunday 12th July from noon with the usual arena events including an agility display by First Class Dog Training, Harmony Majorettes and a karate display. There will be a static model aircraft display, an art and photographic exhibition and a Battle of Britain flypast. Cream teas and a barbeque will provide refreshments. There will be an array of stalls and, for children, rides including the very popular barrel train. Live music from ‘Cutting Hedge Promotions’ a selection of local talent. There will be an all day car boot sale on the site. The day will start with a parade with a floral theme from the Leisure Centre Car park at 11.30. Deeping Dog Show Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams will once again be taking to the hot seat this year when he presents the Awards at the third Deeping Dog Show on 19th July on Jubilee Park, twixt Crowson & Thackers Way. The event commences at 1.00pm and so if you believe that your pooch is the handsomest male, the prettiest bitch or even the most talented dog in Deeping then this is the Show for you! Classes £1.00 each. Craft and pet stands on the park, tombola and home baked cakes, hot food from Grasmere. Agility display from First Class Dog Training.
Raft Race This year Sunday 2nd August will be Raft Race day when the Deepings come alive with the fair, stalls, shops and pubs, bands and a whirlwind of activity all focused on the river and and of course the rafts! The theme for this years race will be cartoon characters and this year nominated charities are South Lincs Dementia Support and the Exotic Pet Refuge.
