UMS employees become accredited Playground Inspectors 2 UMS Directors were delighted to celebrate our 15th year in business in 2010 which we are extremely proud of. From humble beginnings, UMS has remained true to its core values of delivering on its promises, building enduring relationships with our clients and creating a positive and professional environment within our business. Along our way there have been challenges and there is no doubt there will be more, however it has been, and will continue to be, the tremendous commitment by our staff that enable us to rise to the challenge again and again. On Friday September 21st, UMS stopped work at all site locations for 30 minutes to recognise this occasion, cut some specifically baked UMS “Happy Fifteen” cakes and sing Happy Birthday.

The directors, one in Melbourne the other in Sydney, were immensely proud and look forward to many more years of serving our customers and community.

www.ums.com.au UMS EMPLOYEES BECOME ACCREDITED PLAYGROUND INSPECTORS In late August 2010, a number of UMS employees participated in the three day Playground Inspectors Course (Operational Inspection – Level 2). The course was conducted by the University of Technology Sydney and was held at the UMS training facility at our Notting Hill Head Office, Melbourne. The course was held after the success of a similar program conducted for our NSW staff in 2009. The ten UMS participants are all employees currently involved in playground management, auditing and maintenance for a number of our Melbourne Local Government clients. The UTS three day course is an intense combination of class room learning covering an extensive syllabus (very much based around Australian Acts of Parliament and Australian Standards for playground management), plus a broad level of practical, onsite playground exposure and learning. Local playgrounds were used for the virtual training required on each day of the program. The trainer for the program was Dr David Eager, an internationally recognised expert on the safety aspects of playgrounds, play surfaces and related facilities. David is an Associate Professor within the Faculty of Engineering at UTS, a Fellow of Engineers Australia, and has a focus on childrens’ playgrounds and leisure facilities. Under David’s tutorage and guidance, he was able to provide some excellent learnings to develop and strengthen participants knowledge for playground inspections, auditing, repairs, sustainability innovations and general maintenance techniques. For each participant to gain their accreditation they had to pass both written and verbal practical assessments. UMS’ involvement with this playground inspectors course is viewed as an investment in further value add to our clients in ensuring our staff can offer greater professionalism in their general playground auditing, maintenance and safety management knowledge and importantly, the regulatory and compliance requirements.

V8 Super Car Driver Sponsorship This years Gold Coast 600 format involved 17 internationals, many joining the Australian V8 regulars from Formula One. Apart from high profile drivers such as Jac Villeneuve, another ex F1 driver, Tiago Monteiro from Portugal teamed up with local Tony D’Alberto in a Holden. It is no secret that one of our Directors, Campbell Walker, is a mad keen motor racing fan and through his connections UMS was able to get our company name and logo displayed on Tiago’s visor and suit. Tiago’s currently racing in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) for Seat. He hopes to be back next year, and perhaps even including the famous Bathurst 1000.

17th National Works & Engineering Conference, Bendigo - 23-24 September UMS has a long association with the Municipal Works Officers Association (MWOA) and we were pleased to be involved with the 17th National Works & Engineering Conference held in September at the Bendigo Showgrounds. The conference attracted a variety of delegates from around Australia and was very informative, with an interesting program and high quality speakers. The conference provided us with a great opportunity to demonstrate our support for the local government industry and to promote UMS’ service capabilities. Thanks goes to the UMS staff who volunteered to assist either managing the corporate display stand or attending the official dinner.

www.ums.com.au UMS (QLD) Exhibits at LOGOV Expo, Logan City, 6 & 7 October

SYDNEY POLO CLUB TREE WORKS

UMS recently exhibited at the LOGOV Expo, the premier event of the construction industry in Queensland. UMS has recently experienced significant growth in Queensland with depots now located at Narangba and Ormeau. LOGOV provided an opportunity for the team in Queensland to discuss UMS’ in-house capability to provide infrastructure and facilities management services.

During late September and early October 2010 Urban Maintenance Systems was contracted by the Sydney Polo Club to undertake the removal of 75 diseased mature Willow trees from this landmark property on the outskirts of Sydney.

UMS is committed to providing the full scope of its services throughout Queensland including open space services, roadside infrastructure maintenance, graffiti removal and building trade services.

Over six days approximately 50 tonnes of timber was felled producing 360 cubic metres of mulch. The trees ranged in height from 15-20 metres. The operation involved tree climbers, a 15 metre crane lift and a 25 inch wood chipper.

Despite the heavy rain and muddy conditions, the UMS team met a range of people from both the Government and the private sector. It was a great opportunity for the UMS team to chat with existing and potential customers and demonstrate its commitment to the industry. The team were also pleased to have the opportunity to chat with some important members of our supply chain present at the Expo.

The tree line was planted approximately 60 to 70 years ago in a water course. The property lays on an existing flood plan adjacent to the Hawkesbury River.

The work emphasised the arboriculture capabilities of UMS, and our NSW team’s ability to manage complex projects on time and budget.

Being part of the LOGOV Expo was particularly important to UMS and highlights our ongoing commitment to Queensland and the development of our operations in Queensland.

Weed Management Services In response to an identified need for weed management services from some of our clients, UMS has designed and developed a dedicated weed spraying division in NSW. The key focus for the weed spraying division is twofold; ensuring full safety and regulatory compliance in regard to the spraying of herbicides, and strong communication with clients and the public. Proper signage and site access control ensures that the public has minimal exposure to the work whilst the use of leading edge chemicals that have little or no toxicity ensures that there are no adverse impacts. The current successful spraying program on the northern beaches of Sydney has been highly praised by clients for both the professionalism of the UMS team and quality result achieved. This has generated a lot of interest that should see the further development of this division and its capability. We look forward to the growth of this unit as a complementary service, that not only adds value to our existing contracts but also provides another premium quality service as part of our core capabilities.

Underground Service Locators UMS has recently made an investment in the purchase of a number of Underground Service Locators. It had been identified that underground services were a significant risk when undertaking excavation works, such as signage and bollard/fence installations. Along with “Dial Before You Dig” and visual site checks, the use of an Underground Service Locator was identified as an effective control measure for this risk. Several different styles and manufactured units were sourced and a demonstration by the preferred suppliers of each was presented to our Victorian Infrastructure workgroups. The preferred model selected was a Ridgid SR 20 unit. A number of units were purchased and distributed to our work sites.

Safety is as simple as ABC… Always Be Careful

www.ums.com.au What’s new in Facilities Services The last three months has been a busy time in the UMS Facilities Services Division but overall, a very positive period. As the Facilities Services Division continues to grow in scope and capability we would like to welcome National Gallery of Victoria and Mercedes-Benz Australia as our newest clients. UMS has been engaged to deliver general and project related carpentry services to the National Gallery of Victoria and we have already been involved in a number of interesting projects in this high visibility and high standard of quality space. In a similar environment, the provision of facilities maintenance services for Mercedes-Benz at their Australian head office is a great opportunity to UMS providing shop fitting demonstrate UMS’ core services to National commitments to safety, quality and Gallery’s Bunny Rabbit client response to this prestige manufacturer. During this period we were disappointed to see the closure of the Johnson Controls contract, servicing the facilities management needs of Mobil retail fuel outlets in Victoria and NSW, as a result of the sale of these sites to 7- Eleven. As such it is timely to acknowledge and thank JCI for their custom over recent years and in particular, their strong focus on the importance safety and training that has contributed positively and helped to support our shared commitment to these areas. As a result of this change though, we are pleased to have retained a significant part of the facilities maintenance servicing of these former Mobil sites, assisting 7-Eleven in the transition. We look forward to building on this new relationship going forward. The period has also seen a number of contract renewals, extensions and anniversaries. We are pleased to announce extensions to our maintenance services contracts for Village Cinemas for one year and finalising the Melbourne Airport contract for a further three years. Both are long standing clients and we welcome the continuation of our relationship with them. July also saw the successful completion of the first 12 months of our maintenance services contract for Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) at their Lucas Heights facility, working in close co-operation to supporting their multi year Asset Protection Project plan.

Melbourne Marathon The Melbourne Marathon is an exciting event for participants of all ages and fitness levels. There are running and walking opportunities ranging from 5km up to 42.195km.

Bayside Bathing Boxes A list of Melbourne’s top ten iconic buildings is sure to include the famous Brighton Beach Boxes. These landmark buildings have been a part of the Bayside foreshore for over 100 years. They attract local and international sightseers as well as professional and amateur photographers who, on most weekends, take photos of the boxes as a backdrop to an endless stream of bridal parties. The history of bathing boxes in Brighton is documented back to 1862, with most of them traced back to a period between 1908 and 1911. The existing eighty two Dendy St beach boxes were relocated from around Brighton as part of a government work program during the Great Depression. They are owned by Bayside City Council with Bayside residents and/or ratepayers holding licences for their use. Severe weather and the ravages of the harsh foreshore environment destroyed several boxes in the 1930s. Post World War II, licensee’s ensured boxes were maintained in good order but not replaced. More recently, Bayside City Council identified a number of locations along the stretch of Brighton’s Dendy Street Beach where bathing boxes once stood and over the last couple of years developed a program to replace them. T hree replacement boxes are scheduled to be built in 2010/11. UMS has successfully tendered for the construction of all three boxes. The colourful blue, red and yellow shed sold for a record price of $215,000. Bayside Council will use the proceeds from the sale of the box to rejuvenate the foreshore and improve open space.

Built to strict Planning Scheme Heritage Overlays, and with the involvement of various community groups, the construction of the first bathing box was completed in October 2010. The colour scheme was determined by Bayside City Council to ensure consistency with the rest of the boxes.

This annual event started in 1978 and this years marathon festival attracted over 27,000 participants.

Even before construction had been completed, the bathing box had been photographed and advertised on the Hodges Real Estate website. Council auctioned the license for the box in December.

Bret Butler, UMS’ General Manager Facilities Services participated in this years event running 42.195 kms in 3:23:39. It was Bret’s 17th marathon and 6th Melbourne event.

The UMS construction team, working under contract to Bayside City Council, is proud of the quality of the workmanship it contributed to the construction of the new bathing box and looks forward to commencing construction on the next two boxes over the coming months.

Bret is now in training for the Oxfam Trailwalker 100km 48 hour walk event. We wish Bret and his team, Knox Roadrunners, all the best for this gruelling challenge.

Remember - Safety is not a job; it is a way of life.

Congratulations to our five inaugural students, David Lock, Ric te Boekhorst, Laura Bowtell, Wayne Tunks and Paul Brophy. We wish them well in their studies.

UMS staff kick back at annual family Christmas Party UMS maintained its long tradition of celebrating with staff and their partners at our annual family Christmas parties. While the mostly young crowd in Sydney chose to party at night, Queensland families enjoyed an afternoon on a river cruise and Melbourne families celebrated at their traditional park party. In Melbourne’s 15 year history of family Christmas parties it has never rained, but we weren’t sure what to expect this year with unusual heavy rain in the days leading up to the party, but true to form Melbourne turned out a warm and sunny day in the end.

At work at play, let safety lead the way.
