I wrote a short essay, the diary of an actor hired on Monday and fired on Friday. I thought it would be a perfect piece for The New Yorker. The New Yorker disagreed ..., A friend said, “You should write it as a one-man show.” I knew he was right. What is a pretend environment, after all, if not the setting for a play? But wait. I would be depicting a living person on stage. A public figure, true, but one with a litigious history. There’s even a Wikipedia entry for something called the “Streisand effect,” referring to lawsuits that publicize information they intend to suppress, named after you know who. Did I really want to take this on? I guess I did. The idea was too much fun to let go. The premise wasn’t just absurd; it had the potential to be poignant and meaningful. There was something touching and childlike about the pride and care with which Barbra shows off her possessions. And look around: Barbra isn’t the only one with a house that might be a tad grander than necessary these days. The play begins with a disclaimer. The actor explains what is true (the mall in Barbra’s basement) and what is fiction (everything that happens). He also says that he will not impersonate the diva. The play is about the Barbra we never see — in private, living with the blessings and burdens of her fame. By having the actor evoke her simply, switching between characters without costume or caricature, the play keeps Barbra a thing of magic — there but not there, always just out of reach. (It’s a daunting challenge...) So, O.K., if there’s nobody dressed up as Barbra and the show is such a loving tribute, why not just invite her to see it? Well, you can’t do full justice to the Streisand Myth without acknowledging the great lady’s quirks and foibles, some of which she jokes about herself. And there is some tough criticism... Still, to answer the question: No, I have not heard from Barbra. Nor from her lawyers. But I suppose now is a good time for her to hear from me. “Hi, Barbra. We met once 20 years ago, when you came to see a play I wrote. You almost bought the movie rights, but then you didn’t. Anyway, thank you for inspiring Buyer & Cellar and for your sense of humor. People love you in the play, and many of them go home and order copies of your book. I hear that friends of yours have seen the show and told you it’s not offensive. Trust them. But if you do plan to come, don’t tell me, because I’d plotz. (Did I mention I was born in Brooklyn, too?) Oh, and you have to admit, there’s something kind of funny about a mall in a basement.”

Buyer & Cellar Director’s Notes It is a huge honor to be a part of the mainstage season this year and work with the very talented Jimmy Moore on this challenging and hilarious piece.
As a director, I loved working on this play because it truly honors the art of theatre as storytelling. Jimmy is left on stage with a table, a stool, a bench, a book and it is his job to fill in the rest and take you on this wonderful ride. So sit back (make sure you have a drink in hand) and get ready for some summer fun as we all imagine together what it would be like to be in Barbra Streisand’s basement.
When I first started researching the play and learning all about the vibrant world of Barbra, I was instantly sucked into her book, My Passion for Design. If there was ever a coffee table book example of income inequity in this country, this is it. The playwright, Jonathan Tolins, has brilliantly taken this book as his source material and fictionalized a play about a struggling actor who works in Barbra’s basement. This play ponders the great divide that separates the idol from the idolized; the have’s from the have not’s. But what really draws me to this piece is that underneath the mannerisms and eccentricities of Barbra and her estate, the play also explores a deeply sympathetic examination of celebrity, loneliness, and the need for connection. From a distance the life of the rich and famous can be glamorous and desirable, but a closer examination reminds us that all of the material riches in the world don’t bring happiness or substitute the needs for human connection.

About the Artistic Staff NAT MILLER (Director) is honored and delighted to be directing his eighth show at ZACH Theatre. He also produces and directs the Theatre for Families Series with titles including Winnie the Pooh, A Year with Frog and Toad, Pinocchio, Cat in the Hat, Goodnight Moon, The Little Mermaid, and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Nat also oversees the Education programs which includes year round camps and classes as well as outreach in schools in Central Texas. Nat received his M.F.A. in Drama and Theatre for Youth at The University of Texas at Austin and a B.F.A. in theatre from Southern Methodist University. Before moving to Austin, his professional experience includes ten years of directing, teaching, and acting for First Stage Children’s Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Before working at ZACH, Nat was the Education and Outreach Director at Paramount and State Theatres.

JONATHAN TOLINS (Playwright) was recently represented on Broadway by additional material he contributed with his husband, Robert Cary, for the revival of On the Town. He is best known as the author of Buyer & Cellar, which won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show Off-Broadway and was recently named one of the top ten most produced plays in America. Other plays include The Twilight of the Golds, If Memory Serves, The Last Sunday in June, and Secrets of the Trade. Film/TV work includes The Twilight of the Golds, Martian Child, Queer as Folk, The Academy Awards, The Tony Awards, Partners, and the upcoming BrainDead. He and Robert Cary have
written the adaptation of the classic musical Grease, telecast live this past January on Fox TV. He has written articles for Opera News, Opera Monthly, TheaterWeek, Time Magazine, and The Huffington Post, and is a regular panelist on the Metropolitan Opera Radio Quiz. He lives in Fair Field, Connecticut, with his husband and their children, Selina and Henry.

About Barbra Streisand EARLY LIFE
Born Barbara Joan Streisand on April 24, 1942, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to Diana Rosen and Emanuel Streisand. Streisand's father was a high school English teacher who died from complications of an epileptic seizure when Barbra was only 15 months old. Her mother raised Barbra and her older brother, Sheldon, by working as a secretary in the New York City public school system, but the family barely survived on the brink of poverty. They moved in with Barbra's grandparents to help make ends meet. Her mother Diana remarried in 1949 Â to Louis Kind, a used-car salesman, while Streisand was away at a Jewish camp. While she was away at camp, Streisand didn't know about her mother's second marriage to Kind or that her mother was pregnant. Streisand's halfsister, Rosalind, was born in 1951. Streisand has described her childhood as painful. She was shy as a child, and often felt rejected by other children because her looks were unusual. Additionally, she saw her stepfather as emotionally abusive. She also found no support from her mother, who thought her too unattractive to pursue her dreams of show business. As a child, Streisand attended Bais Yakov School, where she sang in the school choir. Following elementary school, Streisand was a student at Erasmus Hall High School where she met future collaborator, Neil Diamond. Even before Barbra graduated from high school, she was traveling to New York City to study acting. At the age of 15, she met Anita and Alan Miller at the Cherry Lane Theater in Greenwich Village. Streisand negotiated a deal with the couple; she would babysit for their children in exchange for a scholarship to Alan's acting school. It was one of two she simultaneously attended. She graduated from Erasmus High in 1959 at the age of 16. She was fourth in her class.
ON STAGE
Streisand never attended college. She moved to Manhattan in 1960 instead, months after graduating from high school. There, she shared several apartments with friends, including one with actor Elliot Gould, who she wed in 1963. They were married for eight years. Together the couple had one child, Jason. While working office jobs and attending acting lessons, Streisand was encouraged to enter a talent night at a local club. She had never taken a singing lesson before. The evening was a resounding success, and she soon embarked on a career as a cabaret singer, dropping the middle "a" from her name so that it would stand out. Her vibrant soprano soon won Streisand a loyal audience at local clubs, such as the Bon Soir and the Blue Angel. She claims that she learned how to cover her insecurity on stage by studying the flamboyance of the drag queens she met during this time. Still, Streisand is infamous for having avoided live performances for nearly three decades due to a debilitating bout of stage fright. She attributes the phobia to a concert in New York's Central Park in 1967, during which she forgot the lyrics to one of her songs. Streisand made her major debut in the Broadway show, I Can Get it For You Wholesale in 1962. She won the New York Drama Critics Award and received a Tony nomination for her performance; the cast album for that show was her first studio recording. Streisand signed with Columbia Records that same year and released her first album, The Barbra Streisand Album in 1963. It became a Top 10 gold record and received two Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. At the time, she was the youngest artist to receive the honor. Despite three successful albums by early 1964, Streisand chose Broadway performances over live concerts. She appeared in the show Funny Girl for more than two years, which earned her a Tony Award nomination. The song People from that show became Streisand's first Top 10 single.

In 1965, Streisand turned to television with My Name is Barbra. The show received five Emmy Awards, and CBS Television awarded Streisand a 10-year contract to produce and star in more TV specials. Streisand was given complete artistic control of the next four network productions. 46
About Barbra Streisand Streisand reprised her role in Funny Girl in 1966 in London at the Prince of Wales Theater. Two years later she made her big-screen debut in the film version of the play. In addition to winning the 1968 Academy Award for her performance, she won a Golden Globe and was named "Star of the Year " by the National Association of Theater Owners. After appearing in the films Hello, Dolly! (1969) and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970), Streisand starred in the non-musical comedy, The Owl and the Pussycat (1970). The year 1972 brought another comedy, What's Up Doc? The same year Streisand founded her own production company, Barwood Films, and starred in the company's first project, Up the Sandbox. The film became one of the first American movies to deal with the growing women's movement. In the 1970s, Barbra Streisand successfully married her film and musical interests; first with the hit film The Way We Were, which featured her first No. 1 single and earned her a 1973 Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. In 1976 came A Star is Born, a film that Streisand produced. The project won six Golden Globes and offered Streisand her second No. 1 single, Evergreen.
DECADES OF SUCCESS
In the late 1970s, Streisand collaborated with former high school choir mate Neil Diamond on the song, You Don't Bring Me Flowers. The single went to No. 1, as did No More Tears (Enough is Enough), a dance record sung with Donna Summer. But Streisand had her biggest-selling album in 1980 with Guilty, which was written and produced by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees and contained the No. 1 hit, Woman in Love. Though she read Isaac Bashevis Singer's short story, Yentl, The Yeshiva Boy shortly after her first film in 1968, it was only after 15 years of perseverance that Streisand was able to bring the story to screen. In her 1983 directorial debut, the film received five Academy Award nominations, and Streisand received Golden Globe Awards as both Best Director and producer of the Best Picture (musical comedy). The film also produced a Top 10 soundtrack. In 1985, The Broadway Album returned Barbra Streisand to the top of the charts. Continuing to integrate all of her talents, in 1987, Streisand followed up Yentl with Nuts. She not only starred in the film, but also produced and wrote the music. For her second directorial outing in 1991, Streisand made the movie Prince of Tides, a story based on the Pat Conroy novel. The film garnered seven Academy Award nominations and a nomination from the Directors Guild of America for her direction, making her only the third woman ever so honored. In 1996, Streisand tried her hand at direction again, with the film The Mirror Has Two Faces.
PERSONAL LIFE AND LEGACY
Streisand married for a second time on July 1, 1998, to actor James Brolin. Following their marriage, Streisand recorded an album of love songs entitled A Love Like Ours (1999). The collection featured the hit duet, If You Ever Leave Me, with Vince Gill. The statistics of Barbra Streisand's achievements are staggering. She is credited for creating dozens of gold- and platinum-selling albums, and is regarded as the top-selling female artist of all time. Streisand has had No. 1 albums in each of the last four decades—the greatest longevity for any solo recording artist. She is second in the all-time charts, ahead of the Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and exceeded by only Elvis Presley.

Mario is a hard working auto mechanic in east LA who is left to raise his son, JJ, after the passing of his mother. In order to honor her memory and cope with his lack of connection with his father, JJ begins to build an arcade out of leftover cardboard from his dad’s garage. It is through JJ’s imagination and ingenuity that he is able to connect to himself and his family. Inspired by the YouTube sensation, Caine’s Arcade, this bilingual play celebrates culture, imagination, perseverance, and family. JJ’s Arcade will be co-produced with Teatro Vivo and presented at the Mexican American Cultural Center.

DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 25th
season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin – a place where our entire community gathers to share an intimate and extraordinary theatre experience. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Anna Deavere Smith says, “Dave is the future. The YES in his theater’s walls is as palpable as the walls themselves. That YES, I believe, will lead to something brand new, to connect with a broader, more global audience.” With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times and about which Todd Gershwin says, “It was Dave’s creative production of Porgy and Bess that really opened my eyes to the need to finally allow a creative team to interpret the opera in a fresh manner, which led to the recent Broadway production.” Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: Mothers and Sons, All the Way, A Christmas Carol: A Rockin’ New Musical, The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Harvey; 33 Variations; Ragtime; Next to Normal; Hairspray; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Our Town; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; I Am My Own Wife; Urinetown; Crowns; Omnium-Gatherum; Hedwig; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels In America and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave serves as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. City of Austin Mayors Kirk Watson and Lee Leffingwell declared, respectively, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’“Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, seven Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award, and multiple Austin Critics’ Table and B. Iden Payne Awards for “Outstanding Director/Choreographer.” In 2009, he was crowned Austin Dancing with the Stars Champion, and he has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s 2012 film Bernie with Jack Black.

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) joined ZACH Theatre as Managing Director in June of 2007, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread aclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign! Other accomplishments during her eight years at ZACH include creating a new multi-year strategic plan that will move the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 79 percent and increasing revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to $8 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure.
Elisbeth has led her team in developing innovative new offerings on ZACH’s expanded campus including full-service bars and nightly pre-show entertainment; an exclusive skyline lounge in the Topfer Theatre for donors; and making the theatre available as a red-carpet venue for SXSW, The Daily Show, as well as other major community events. Last year, ZACH proudly launched The Dave Steakley Dream Fund designed to enhance the artistic vision of ZACH’s Producing Artistic Director and to maintain production quality and the facility needs of ZACH’s Topfer Theatre and campus. Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, community-based organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed artists’ residency program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. Elisbeth currently serves on the Board of Directors and is Development Committee Chair of the National Alliance of Musical Theatre in New York, and has served on NAMT’s Festival of New Musicals Committee and Executive Committee. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance of Musical Theatre, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 55

Group Sales Groups of 8 or more receive discounts and may place advance ticket orders based on availability. We can assist you in everything from planning your pre-show cocktail hour to arranging caterers for a post-show gathering in one of our beautiful spaces. Latecomers and Seating At show time, all empty seats are released back to the house to seat those patrons on stand-by. If you are running late to your performance, phone the Box Office so that we are aware that you are on your way and can hold your seats. Any patron arriving after curtain will be seated at the discretion of House Management. Our ushers will show you to your seat, if it’s easily accessible. If the seat is not accessible, you will be shown to an available seat at a break. At intermission, you’re welcome to relocate to your ticketed seat location.
Special Needs A Box Office Associate will be pleased to assist you with any special seating needs when you purchase your tickets. We have wheelchair and limited mobility seating in all of our theatres, and provide accessible restrooms, entry doors, and walkways. To access the second-level Serra Skyline Lounge in the Topfer Theatre, you many use the elevator located in the lobby. Assisted listening devices are available at the Box Office free of charge. For more information about any of these services, please contact the Box Office at 512-476-0541 x1.
Drinks and Dining ZACH’s bars and lounges open 90 minutes prior to show time. The Topfer lounge remains open post-show for an opportunity to meet and mingle with the cast. Pre-order your drinks at the bar, and they will be waiting for you at intermission and post-show. Our bars accept all major credit cards, and you may run a tab during your visit. ZACH’s lounges and bars offer a selection of wines, cocktails, and craft beers. Our Kleberg and Topfer bars offer a wide range of liquor selections including our popular wells and single malt scotches. Gourmet appetizer plates and small bites are also available.
Transportation ZACH’s Box Office staff will happily assist you in arranging a taxi for post-show. ZACH also recommends Uber as an alternative transportation option. There is a dedicated Uber pick-up and drop-off location in the Topfer Theatre parking lot. 62
