FORWARD My mother, Ann Richards, was larger than life – passionate, funny, complicated, and determined to make her mark on the world. Her journey, from an only child born to hard-scrabble parents in Lakeview, Texas, to being the first woman elected in her own right as governor of Texas, had more than its share of ups and downs. Her personal story, along with her uncanny humor and plain-spoken truisms, captured the imagination of the public – those who knew her and many more who felt like they did. In ANN, Holland has mastered what many comedians, politicians, and writers have attempted for years – she found the voice of Ann Richards. Holland researched every word, speech, and interview that Ann Richards ever wrote or spoke. She became a living archive of Mom’s life. Holland’s writing and performance tells her story brilliantly – as Mother would say, warts and all. There’s not a single word out of place. Books have been written, documentaries made, but nothing truly captures the life of my mother like ANN. Mom loved sitting in a dark theater and being entertained and inspired. I’m grateful that Holland Taylor has done both with ANN. Through Holland’s work, Mom can continue to inspire young women and men, and as a result some may devote their lives to public service. She believed there was no higher calling, and nothing would have pleased her more.

Acknowledgements Five years ago, early in the play’s march across the country, we were playing the Empire Theatre in San Antonio. Dave Steakley was in the house. He told us that in all his years running theatres, he observed that intermission in men’s rooms was always quiet, guys coming in briskly take care of business and leave. But at ANN, there was loud yakking, the men going on and on about Ann Richards, the play, those times, what a ball they we re having. We were all encouraged by Dave’s astute observation, and indeed, it was a unique clincher. It also made me pay attention when he said I should bring ANN back to Austin one day, to his theatre. The invite stuck. I want to set that men’s room afire. I am grateful to Dave, to all his superb staff, and the many folks who helped get ANN home again. As always, I remember Bob Boyett whenever I give thanks, as he is the man who decided long ago, that this play, and its subject, belonged on Broadway and that he would take it all the way there.

Special Thanks This play would not be possible without the generous support of the following people who served as the principal source of information and research. Jane Hickie (Political Strategist and close friend), Mary Beth Rogers (Chief of Staff, Campaign Manager and friend), Claire Korioth (Gubernatorial Appointee and longtime friend), Cathy Bonner (Director of Department of Commerce and friend), Barbara Chapman (Executive Assistant, Austin), Sandra Castellanos (Executive Assistant, New York), Betty McKool (longtime friend and supporter) Ave Bonar (Ann’s Photographer), Bill Cryer (Press Secretary), Martha Smiley (UT Board of Regents), Suzanne Coleman (Speech Writer), David Talbot (General Counsel), Cecile Richards (Daughter and President of Planned Parenthood), Dan Richards (Son, Attorney), Clark Richards (Son, Attorney), Ellen Richards (Daughter), Lily Adams (Granddaughter), David Miller (Administration), Jaston Williams (Playwright, Actor and Supporter), Bud Shrake (Renowned Writer and longtime friend), Jennifer Treat (Head of Fundraising), Gail Huitt (life-long hair dresser), Wayne Slater (Journalist), Janet Allen (Administrative Aide), Chula Reynolds (Supporter and friend), Don Temples (Administrative Aide), Patrick Terry (Bluebonnet Club Administrator and whippersnapper in the day), Liz Smith (close personal friend in later years), Barry Bridges (DPS Security Officer), Maynon Laverne “M.L.” Routt (personal housekeeper), Karen Knippa (massage therapist in her last years), Billy Rhea (DPS Security Officer), Evan Smith (then Editor of Texas Monthly), Ali James (Texas State Capital Curator), Mark Strama (Texas House of Representatives). And finally - to those of my creative and producing team who have made this journey with me... Kevin Bailey (Executive Producer), Benjamin Endsley Klein (Director), Michael Fagin (Scenic Design), Matthew Richards (Lighting Design), Ken Huncovsky (Sound Design), Zachary Borovay (Projection Design), Julie Weiss (Costume Design), Paul Huntley (Wig Design), Robert Tolaro (Stage Manager), Amy S. ANN Director’s Notes Picture this: It’s July 12th, 2010. Sitting across from me at a busy cafe near Grand Central in New York is none other than the renowned actress Holland Taylor. Holland and I have met only once before, a few years prior in London. We are there to discuss a play she’s written about Governor Ann Richards. Holland is passionate, emphatic, and wildly determined. She has researched her subject for literally years, and the play has been produced once before in Galveston, Texas. Another production was on the docket for later that year in San Antonio. I am meeting Holland to possibly become the director of that production. My nerves are palpable. Holland is picking my brain, we’re getting to know one another, and little did I know that would be the day my life changed forever. I say this not because (as you may have already gleaned) I was able to secure the job directing ANN, but because that was the day Governor Ann Richards would enter my life.

Austin (at the Paramount), Chicago, Washington D.C. (at The Kennedy Center), and eventually on Broadway at Lincoln Center. There are many memorable moments from our journey, but one in particular has always stuck with me: after one of our early performances in New York, I overheard an audience member exclaim, “I feel like I can do anything!” That statment, I knew was Ann Richards at work, or as I like to call it “The Ann Effect.” And now here we are, back in the place where essentially it all began. There is no way to express how great it is to be welcomed to ZACH. My many thanks to Dave Steakley and to the wonderful staff here, who have brought us together to visit with ANN again, a voice that is so desperately missed in today’s society. Finally, I have to take this opportunity to thank Holland. To paraphrase your play, thankfully, you “placed your bets on me.”

As I began the journey of working on ANN I knew this was going to be a special experience, but there was no way for me to imagine what lay ahead. To date I’ve had the extreme pleasure of watching ANN delight and inspire audiences in (the aforementioned) San Antonio, Galveston,

And to our audience, thanks for being here and enjoy “The Ann Effect!”

A Note from Holland Taylor

Photo: Platon

There is no way to convey my love and appreciation for the hundred or so friends, associates, and members of Ann Richards’ family who helped me understand her in a way that would have been utterly impossible without them. I was compelled to write this play... the notion to do it at all, the idea for how to write it—its shape and style—came all in a rush, leaving me wide eyed with surprise. And in I plunged. During the darkest hours of trying to shape a tumultuous mountain of material– in a daydream I would see Ann in the fifth row, beaming happily and elbowing our mutual old friend, Liz Smith. Six years of work later, I made a journey I could never have imagined. But I went in whole hog, and stayed in— working hard and doing the best I could — which gave me a hint of how I’ll bet Ann Richards felt every single day. I hope Ann would like this. People loved to please her...one of her children said to please her was to get hit with a million suns. So, of course, now I want to please her, too. Texans have welcomed me in my endeavor, which I find incredibly generous (Yankee that I am), and I will always be grateful for their affection and fun and open hearts. As this is a piece of writing based on research, I should say something about the text itself. I had intended by now to annotate it, to say who told the story something was based on, what chunk was cobbled from this, what sliver was taken from that, and what large sections were stitched up out of whole cloth, though based on sure and certain knowledge of my subject. But, of course, the tide sweeps me along, and I haven’t done that yet. (I never did master footnotes in school.) Most of the play is based on years of overlapping stories told me in significant detail, including fragments of fabulous dialogue, by the players themselves. The office scenes in the play have been created based on many, many anecdotes and, in some areas, profound and lengthy study—though the play’s ending, for obvious reasons, is purely a dream — about someone I do think of now as a friend I know pretty well, and love. – Holland Taylor 41

ANN Cast HOLLAND TAYLOR (Ann Richards and playwright) The New Yorker has called Holland Taylor “the first vaudeville Gentile we ever saw.” Her New York stage performances include Bess in Breakfast with Les and Bess, the original productions of Butley, opposite Alan Bates, and A.R. Gurney’s The Cocktail Hour. In Los Angeles she has performed in Kindertransport, and played opposite Christopher Lloyd in Yasmina Reza’s The Unexpected Man at the Geffen. She has worked extensively in film and television, appearing in Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, To Die For, Next Stop Wonderland, One Fine Day, George of the Jungle, The Truman Show, Happy Accidents, Spy Kids (2 & 3), Keeping the Faith, Legally Blonde, and Baby Mama, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

In 2014, after her ANN run, Holland appeared in a movie titled Kepler’s Dream, an inspiring film for a young audience, and this season in New York, she played another character who never leaves the stage and talks a LOT, in Pulitzer prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire’s dark comedy, Ripcord, at the Manhattan Theatre Club. Holland was a dedicated student of Stella Adler, and has given talks about the work and cultural contribution of this great teacher. Adler’s papers reside now in Texas, at the HCR Center Archives at UT. Proud to be a Philadelphia native, Holland went to Westtown Friends School in that area, and took a B.A. at Bennington College. In 2005 she became a student again, earning an M.A. from the University of Santa Monica, and in ’07, began work on this play. She will always be grateful to the Galveston Grand Opera’s Maureen Patton, who took an enormous ‘Ann Richards’ sized risk in launching its first run; to Kevin Bailey, our shepherd from the start; to Benjamin Endsley Klein for his promise to ‘make the vision flesh;’ and to Bob Boyett, who read the play as a friend, and looked up from the page as its producer.

On television, Holland has been nominated for the Emmy seven times, winning Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for the sexually popular Judge Roberta Kittleson on The Practice. Among her numerous series starring roles: The Powers that Be, Norman Lear’s shortlived but highly acclaimed political satire, Bosom Buddies, with Tom Hanks, and, of course the juggernaut Two and a Half Men, with her dear boys, Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer and number 3 son, Ashton Kutcher. She has performed narrations for the Los Angeles Philharmonic with Essa-Pekka Salonen and John Adams, and narrated the Harry Potter Suite for John Williams at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

And now I bring ANN back to Austin. My proudest achievement, my most heartfelt work-- it is with only joy that I present it here, in the bosom of the people who loved her and knew her best.

ZACH Leadership DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 25th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin – a place where our entire community gathers to share an intimate and extraordinary theatre experience. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Anna Deavere Smith says, “Dave is the future. The YES in his theater’s walls is as palpable as the walls themselves. That YES, I believe, will lead to something brand new, to connect with a broader, more global audience.” With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times and about which Todd Gershwin says, “It was Dave’s creative production of Porgy and Bess that really opened my eyes to the need to finally allow a creative team to interpret the opera in a fresh manner, which led to the recent Broadway production.” Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: Mothers and Sons, All the Way, A Christmas Carol: A Rockin’ New Musical, The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Harvey; 33 Variations; Ragtime; Next to Normal; Hairspray; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Our Town; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; I Am My Own Wife; Urinetown; Crowns; Omnium-Gatherum; Hedwig; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels In America and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. ZACH Leadership

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) joined ZACH Theatre as Managing Director in June of 2007, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread aclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign! Other accomplishments during her eight years at ZACH include creating a new multi-year strategic plan that will move the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 79 percent and increasing revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to $8 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure. Elisbeth has led her team in developing innovative new offerings on ZACH’s expanded campus including full-service bars and nightly pre-show entertainment; an exclusive skyline lounge in the Topfer Theatre for donors; and making the theatre available as a red-carpet venue for SXSW, The Daily Show, as well as other major community events. Last year, ZACH proudly launched The Dave Steakley Dream Fund designed to enhance the artistic vision of ZACH’s Producing Artistic Director and to maintain production quality and the facility needs of ZACH’s Topfer Theatre and campus. Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, community-based organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed artists’ residency program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. Elisbeth currently serves on the Board of Directors and is Development Committee Chair of the National Alliance of Musical Theatre in New York, and has served on NAMT’s Festival of New Musicals Committee and Executive Committee. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance of Musical Theatre, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 55
