hen a film on a controversial subject is made, its first look or trailer is bound to grab eyeballs. The trailer of 31st October, which was launched on Wednesday, is based on the story of the aftermath of (former PM of India) Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

The storyline, actors Soha Ali Khan and Vir Das as the cast, and the bold attempt at dealing with an incident like this have managed to intrigue the audiences. After two years of research and dealing with trouble from the Censor Board, producers Harry Sachdeva (above, right)

and Anand Prakash say, “With a lot of courage, we have attempted this subject and the kind of response we have received on the trailer has given us tremendous encouragement”. Soha says, “The trailer is absolutely a peep of the film and I’m assured that we

India. “Under the guise of stopping exploitation of poor women, the anti-surrogacy bill is retrograde in its definition of family. What’s worse is it impacts on the rights of the LGBT community and single parents,” says Azmi, who played a lesbian in Fire, 20 years ago, and will play a lesbian’s

We lose as many women in a year due to pregnancy complications as having 400 airplane crashes a year! But since it’s poor, rural women who are dying, no attention is being paid to maternal mortality,” rues Azmi.

MEANWHILE... HOLLYWOOD CALLING FOR SONAM Sonam Kapoor has been signed on by a Hollywood talent agency, United Talent Agency (UTA),

which is based out of Los Angeles, USA. The agency represents international celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and Benedict Cumberbatch, among others. Excited about her foray into Hollywood, Sonam tweeted on Thursday, “Super chuffed to be signed on by UTA! #unitedtalentagency (sic).” HTC

ctor Sonam Kapoor’s impeccable fashion sense and love for books often overshadow her humanitarian side in news. This aspect came to the fore when the 31-year-old recently visited a Mumbai hospital to interact with children suffering from malnutrition. “If you’re born into privilege, it’s your duty to give back (to society). That’s why I’ve been dedicating a lot of my time towards the causes I believe in,” says Sonam. Another non-profit organisation she’s associated with collaborates with hospitals to provide treatment for kids who have cancer. “When you’re hungry and fighting for food, every other cause you’re fighting for becomes irrelevant. You first need to survive. Then only can you do other things. A lot of hospitals offer cancer treatment to underprivileged children. But the treatment, though free of cost, doesn’t work on them because they are so poor and malnourished. What is the point of the free treatment when they don’t have the energy to fight it?” Sonam questions. As a celeb, the actor feels it’s important to use the platform to give publicity to certain causes. “I believe I should pay forward. I am a concerned Indian citizen, and I believe in humanity,” says Sonam, who’s actively involved with the cancer hospital’s treatment plans. “The cause becomes more effective when you’re actually involved and know what’s going on,” she asserts. Sonam adds she will also “work towards education and literacy”. Ask her if she’d promote the causes through her films, and she says she isn’t running “a campaign”. “I am not a politician; I’m an artist. But I use my celebrity status to affect change. As an artist, I hope to paint a true picture of what is going on,” says Sonam. n

‘Don’t say I’m famous because Honey bhai wasn’t on the scene’

omposer-rapper Badshah is thrilled about his latest chart-topping song, Kaala Chashma. But dare you credit his escalating success in the last one year to popular rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh’s absence. “I can get away by saying that I don’t get affected by all this, but honestly, farak padta hai (it does affect me). When someone says I became famous only because Honey bhai wasn’t on the scene, I feel bad. It feels like my work has no credibility,” says Badshah, who has also belted out hit tracks such as Chul and Wakhra Swag. Honey Singh suddenly disappeared from the music scene, only to return earlier this year after 18 months, and reveal that he suffered from bipolar disorder. “I must confess I was bipolar and an alcoholic, which aggravated the condition,” he had said. Badshah (real name: Aditya Prateek Singh

Sisodia) says he is where he is today only because of his hard work. “Yes, I’ve been lucky to work with some of the biggest stars in the film industry, but I’ve worked hard and fans have loved my music... And it’s not like I came in after he (Yo Yo) left. I was there when he was in the industry and delivering hits even then... (But) I have no grudges against anyone. I just want to focus on creating more music,” he says. As for his hit song — a remastered version of Amar Arshi’s Bhangra pop hit Tenu Kala Chashma Jajta Ve — in the upcoming Sidharth Malhotra-Katrina Kaif starrer, the Delhi born rapper says: “I didn’t expect it to become so big. There was a lot of pressure and I didn’t want to ruin the classic so I had to be careful with it.” n samarth.goyal@hindustantimes.com
