Gerrit Rietveld was born on the 24 June 1888 in Utrecht, Netherlands. He lef t school at the age of 11 and became an apprentice, working with his father. He worked as a draughtsman from 19061911 In 1917 he opened his own furniture workshop. He was considered a principal member of the De Stijl movement. He died at the age of 76 on the 25 th June, 1964
IMPACT ON MODERN FURNITURE DESIGN Rietvelds “red and blue chair” and the Rietveld Schroder House were often seen as core elements in modernism, abstraction, materiality and planarity. His generative idea however, Emphasizing the sensorial experience through the perception of clear forms, has remained obscured along with his wider works outside of the Netherlands. He became a virtual contribution that purely focussed on a chair and a building as opposed to an actual 3 dimensional designer. NAi Publishers, 253

INFLUENCE ON CONTEMPORARY DESIGN The form of the design is functional while it does not contain and displace space but allows it to be perceived as a continuum 8
Zaha Hadid Architects have developed the original design and made it appear more organic and ergonomic, therefore designing a more effective chair. 9
The change in materials also gives the design a new dimension and gives a more modern approach on a similar design. 10
