Our readers have told us that they are keen on learning about how New York style trend-setters go about their lives—professionally, aesthetically and personally. In a new series of featured articles, we are taking you to the homes of the designers and asking them to open their inner quarters. Architectural Digest-ranked top interior designer Geoffrey Bradfield, a newly minted honoree of the American Cancer Society’s Man of Achievement Award, takes us for a grand tour of his famed white townhouse. In the New York social circle, Geoffrey is known as the consummate host who throws the most amazing themed parties attended by a cross-section of society. Being a foreigner has been a defining experience in my life. After I finished college, rather than sitting back on multiple literary awards and a roster of publications, I came to the United States to pursue graduate studies and career opportunities. I had to try to achieve a native level in all aspects of English language (including writing), which was like starting my life all over again. O Man! That was a lot of work! But I think learning a foreign language is fundamentally a humbling and enriching experience. This grace of humility in front of a different culture has profoundly shaped my worldview. Thus last summer I was deeply intrigued by the report of the Chinese bass opera singer Hao Jiang Tian taking 20 Western performers to China where they sang opera in Mandarin. We are honored to feature Tian as our cover story: a fi xture of the Metropolitan Opera with regular appearances in prominent theaters worldwide, he has spent decades singing in Italian, German and French to a world accustomed to thinking of opera only as a Western art form. Just as Tian has learned to sing opera in foreign languages, through Tian’s I SING BEIJING project his Western counterparts have learned the challenges of singing arias in Mandarin. They also learned that Chinese has had its own operatic tradition and new linguistic possibilities that could open a new frontier of musical experience and understanding. And this precious experience of encountering the “foreign” will inevitably resonate with our reader—whether you are a traveler from China, a Chinese American, or a luxury advertiser who is trying to attract China’s luxury shoppers—as you experience YUE and our New World.

You don’t have to imagine summer any more: it’s HERE—in New York. I always believe that a very important aspect of fashion is about fantasy—donning a garment that transports you to an imaginary terrain of time and space. Seersucker, cotton candies, pastel-colored balloons—all go well with a cone of ice cream on a lazy summer day at the beach or at poolside. Summer is also the time to pack for travels. Travels, particularly foreign travels, are the best “continuing education” for adults and the best “finishing school” for youth. Our pages are packed with light outfits and stylish timepieces that will adorn your energetic summer bodies while you sip cappuccino at an international airport. We also spoil ladies with a splendid parade of cocktail rings, which remind us that jewelry is about joie de vivre and about the virtue of sometimes not taking oneself too seriously. Then there are shoes. In many cultures, feet are the terrains of fantasy, and shoe fetishes seem universal. At least in New York, Sex and the City legitimized shoes as the ultimate fetishes of the millennium. YUE takes you to the raging shoe salons in our town. On May 9, 2012, six months after the publication of the inaugural issue of YUE Magazine, we held our much-anticipated launch party with Lang Lang and Donald Trump in attendance. More than 375 guests (sorry that additional 200 RSVPs could not be honored due to safety concerns) that included luxury travelers from China and prominent Chinese Americans and New York elite were a testament to YUE’s founding philosophy of embodying the international

非常喜欢《约》杂志,美图很多,信息量 非常大,想必杂志编辑一定非常用心在 做刊物吧。我最喜欢的部分应该是《纽 约人的购物秘密:漫步麦迪逊大道》, 配上图片和详细的地址,我想下次去曼 哈顿,我一定会拿着这本杂志去寻找中 意的一枚戒指。 《约》不仅仅只是在展 示奢品,更是在向读者阐述着一种不同 的生活态度,毕竟积极的人生态度不 应该被认为是奢侈的。 I love YUE Magazine—it is a wealth of beautiful images and content. The editors of the magazine must have put a lot of heart into the creation of this publication. My favorite section is probably “New Yorkers’ Shopping Secrets: A Walk Down Madison Avenue,” with its images and detailed addresses. I think that when I next visit NYC, I will defi nitely take YUE along with me while I look for a ring that suits my tastes. YUE is not only showcasing luxury goods; more importantly, it is demonstrating to its readers a different approach to life. The exciting evening kicked off with guests toasting to the official launch of the new issue of YUE Magazine.

The elegant atmosphere in the chic lounge area showcased Ligne Roset’s uniquely designed and stunning furniture and mesmerized the over 375 fashionably clad guests. The arrival of Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner drew everyone’s attention and caused much excitement. The trio posed for the enthusiastic guests’ pictures with genuine smiles. The guests’ excitement further increased when concert pianist Lang Lang descended down the escalator to join the launch party. Guests instantly became starry-eyed fans, shyly asking for their photos to be taken with the famed pianist. Treated to live music performed by musicians from the Julliard School, guests mixed and mingled with friends such as Lu Hailin (spouse of the Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations), Xia Zhishun (spouse of the Deputy Chinese Consul General in New York), Liz Peek, Yaz Hernandez and Eleanora Kennedy (Trustees of Directors of Couture Council), Lady Liliana Cavendish, Dame Jillian Sackler, René Balcer (Emmy-winning director and philanthropist),and Geoffrey Bradfield, one of Architecture Digest’s top 100 interior designers. Throughout the evening, guests from different cultures made casual conversations while sipping Medea Vodka’s exclusively designed YUE signature cocktails and Sant Arturo’s luxurious wine. Senior executives from top luxury brands also joined the festivities. The party brought together many Chinese and New York fashionistas, socialites and leaders in one room, all sharing the same joy in seeing a new issue of YUE. Enjoying the delicious Asian-styled appetizers created by Top Chef’s American celebrity chef Angelo Sosa, guests experienced the balanced fusion of Chinese and American cultures at the tip of their tongues. To top the night off, Ms. Jansen cut a red cake topped with a dragon figure and the Chinese word “YUE” alongside Jared Kushner, Lu Hailin and Lang Lang. In Chinese culture, the color red signifies auspiciousness and happiness, whereas the dragon delivers good luck and symbolizes originality and innovation. The combination of the two not only celebrates another issue published in the Year of the Dragon, but also honors YUE’s continuing success.

Each tier of the cake was a different flavor, from rich and moist German chocolate cake with coconut pecan filling to the classic crowd-pleaser red velvet with cream cheese filling.

China Institute Gala ON MAY 11, 2012, YUE attended China Institute’s gala to honor the recipients of the organization’s Blue Cloud Award, bestowed upon individuals who have “soar[ed] amid blue clouds” due to their achievements in promoting awareness of the Chinese language and culture. This year’s recipients were Chen Feng, the Chairman of the HNA Group, and David Henry Hwang, a Tony Award-winning playwright and librettist. Innovative rock musician and instrumentalist Wu Tong was also honored as Musician of the Year. This year marks the Award’s 28th anniversary; past honorees include Zhang Xin, the CEO and cofounder of SOHO China; Cai Guo-Qiang, a modern Chinese artist; and Henry Kissinger, former United States Secretary of State. The gala serves a dual purpose: it honors the nominees while raising funds to assist China Institute’s educational and cultural programs. This year’s gala raised over $1.2 million. The dinner gala was held at Cipriani 42nd, where over 300 VIP guests mingled over Cipriani’s signature peach Bellinis while posing in elegant black-tie attire for the press, including the Times’ own Bill Cunningham. Notable guests included many trustees and long-time supporters of the Institute: Chien Chung Pei and Beatrice Pei, Miranda Wong Tang and Hamburg Tang, Carolyn Hsu Balcer and René Balcer, Chen Guoqing and Liu Ming, Oscar L. Tang, Dong Xiaojun (acting Consul-General), Mitzi Perdue and Jay and Susan Goffman. Honorees Chen Feng and David Henry Hwang both charmed the guests with their acceptance speeches; afterward, guests were treated to a lively performance on the sheng (Chinese mouth organ) by honoree Wu Tong. The China Institute, founded by Hu Shi and John Dewey in 1926, is a cultural organization devoted to promoting awareness and understanding of China and Chinese culture through cross-cultural programs in fields such as education and business. YUE Magazine was the official media sponsor of the gala and is a strategic partner of China Institute.

Jiang Tian has reached an incredible milestone on his exceptional journey from factory worker to internationally-renowned performer. In the summer of 2011, the Beijing-born opera singer returned to his home city with twenty young Western-trained opera singers from eight different countries. In a symbolic gesture, the Westerners sang modern Chinese opera at Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts in the inaugural season of I SING BEIJING, a Mandarin-language opera workshop and performance project that made history and garnered worldwide media attention. A second season of I SING BEIJING will begin in July 2012. For Tian, who once had to sneak away from his factory job to practice his vocal skills, I SING BEIJING is an emotional opportunity to join together his beloved native culture and the Western art form he has come to master and enjoy. Tian’s career took off after he landed a contract with the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1991; he has been performing there for each consecutive season ever since. He has achieved critical acclaim throughout his career, which spans over 1,300 performances in 40 operatic roles. The most notable aspect of his career has been his tenure at the Met, where he has sung in 26 operas over a span of nearly twenty years. There, he has played General Wang in Tan Dun’s The First Emperor opposite Plácido Domingo and is the go-to opera singer to play Timur in Turandot. He is recognized as one of the first Chinese opera singers to play major roles in Western operas, including Oroveso in Norma, Count Walter in Luisa Miller, Philip II in Don Carlos, Le Comte in Manon, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Ramphis in Aida, Procida in I Vespri Siciliani and Mephistopheles in Faust. Additionally, he has played prominent roles in many Chinese operatic performances, including the title roles in The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci in Hong Kong and Poet Li Bai at the Central City Opera in Colorado. He has also starred in productions at major opera houses, including Berlin State Opera, Teatro Colon, Teatro Comunale di Firenze, Arena di Verona, and Chicago Lyric Opera.

曾经,作为著名歌剧歌唱家的田先生厌恶西方的音乐。七岁 时的田先生因为身患头皮疾病而不得不以拔掉每一根头发的方 式治疗。作为音乐家的父母是这个治疗过程的执行者,方式是治 疗开始时播放西方音乐唱片转移他的注意力,尝试着向他解释 这些音乐有多么的美妙,但是受尽头皮拉扯痛苦的他无论如何 都无法感受这份音乐带来的美好所以西方音乐的声音对他来说 就是痛苦的记忆。 孩童时期的田先生曾经渴望成为一名画家,但是这童年的 梦想遭到作为音乐家的父母的反对。相反地,他们要求他走上与 他梦想截然相反地道路——学习钢琴: “每次弹钢琴的时候我 总是以泪洗面”。田浩江这样回忆到。 1969年,田先生14岁的时候,他的父母被政府调往农村。至 今他还记得当时帮助父母打点行装时,清理那个独立式留声机 的场景。当时政府要求取消一切与西方文化有关的东西,但是 在留声机中他意外发现了残存的唯一唱片——贝多芬第六交响 曲。

Surprisingly, before he became a famous opera singer, Tian hated Western music. Chopin and Beethoven were part of his painful treatment regimen for a scalp disease he had when he was seven years old. His parents—themselves musicians—tried to explain how beautiful the music was, but it was difficult for him to hear the magic as his hair was being pulled out of his head. As a child, Tian had artistic dreams of becoming a painter, but his parents forced him to study the piano instead. “I always practiced in tears,” he recalls. In 1969, when he was 14 years old, the government ordered his parents to leave Beijing and relocate to the countryside. While he helped his parents pack, he recalls, they found a freestanding gramophone. The government had ordered the destruction of all things Western, but he found one record that had survived: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6. SUMMER 2012 | 33

“That night was the first [time] I started to pay attention to Western music,” he says. That night, he “fell in love with the movement.” He was moved by the sparkle the music brought to his father’s eyes and the way it changed his voice. His father was usually a very serious man, but that glumness disappeared when the music came on. “This must be a powerful thing,” he thought. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 was the last piece that Tian’s father conducted before the ban on all things Western would keep the music of Beethoven and his contemporaries underground in China for decades. Tian spent the next six and a half years of his life working in an electrical boiler factory outside of Beijing. He says that he “became a bit wild,” returning to the piano and creating experimental compositions—tapping the keys with his forehead, chopsticks, anything—at all hours of the day and night. “[I was] the first avant-garde composer,” he chuckles. One day, he returned to find his piano without a voice. A neighbor had come by in his absence and removed all the hammers. “My music could be very loud,” he says. The muted piano incident was only a temporary interruption. Soon afterward, he was banging away on another set of keys, this time on an accordion. He thought he would become a professional accordion player, but a coincidental run-in with a friend’s neighbor planted the seed of his future career as a powerful operatic bass. The stranger told him that he had a natural gift and encouraged him to take voice lessons. “I don’t remember his name or face, [but] he was a sign!” he says.

“我花了一年时间练习声乐”,田先生回忆着, “那是非常艰 难的一段日子,尤其是我每天还要去工厂工作。去工厂有两个小 时的车程,接着还要工作8个小时”。当时在家练习唱歌是非常 困难的,所以最能锻炼他这个新天赋的场地便是每天工作的地 方。 “每次我都得编个故事,比如说‘我要上厕所’来找借口偷溜 去工厂外的空地练习,然后再跑回来继续工作。为了可以练习我 不断地找借口,有的时候甚至谎称自己病了”。 所有的偷偷摸摸和辛勤努力最终都有所回报。1977年他成 为北京中央音乐学院的学生,首位由中国文化部邀请的美国声乐 老师的出现将他进一步带到了音乐的世界。从老师那里学的音 乐中,他最喜欢的便是舒伯特,巴赫还有一首来自俄克拉何马歌 剧中的名为《噢!多么美丽的早晨》的歌曲。 当声乐大师班结业音乐会即将举行时,田浩江对于他第一 次成为演唱会的独唱演员极为紧张,演出前几天他的臂膀骨折, 他对这位美国老师解释不能演唱时感到如释重负。老师告诉 他“你摔断的是手臂,不是喉咙。”并告诉他世界著名小提琴演 奏家伊扎克.帕尔曼因先天性疾病无法行走却成为著名演奏家的 故事。田先生最终克服了自己的弱点,他说: “当你表演的时候, 你必须坚强得像个战士。”

“I worked on my voice for one year,” Tian recalls. “Pretty difficult—I still had to go to the factory—long days. Two-hour ride to the factory, eight hours work.” He found it difficult to sing at home. Often, the best opportunities to hone his newfound craft were at work. “I had to make up a story to get excused—‘I have to go to the bathroom’—I’d sneak out to the open field to practice, then I would run back to my work,” he says. “I kept finding excuses to practice my voice. Sometimes I would lie and say I was sick.” All of that sneaking around and hard work paid off. In 1977, he finally became a vocal student at the Central Conservatory in Beijing. Soon after, the first American voice teacher was invited by the Ministry of Culture to teach a master class for three months. She taught Tian about Western music; among his favorites were Schubert, Bach and the song “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” from the musical Oklahoma! After the master class, a concert was planned, and Tian would make his debut as a soloist singing his favorite Western songs. Frightened to perform a solo, he was relieved when he broke his arm days before the concert and tried to convince his teacher that he should not sing.The teacher told him, “You just broke your arm, not your throat” and shared the story of the renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, who could not walk but played the violin. Tian overcame his setback. “You have to be a fighter when you perform,” he says. SUMMER 2012 | 35

1983年,带着口袋里仅有的35美金,田浩江终于踏上了通往 美国的道路。经济的困窘不曾阻止他买了一张站票去大都会剧 院看了他生平第一场西方歌剧《埃尔南尼》,主演的是著名男高 音帕瓦罗蒂。十年以后的同一天,他与帕瓦罗蒂一同站在这个舞 台上第一次合作。 田浩江在丹佛大学进入了声乐的研究生科目,奖学金只提 供学习,于是他在上学的同时开始在学校的食堂洗碗。在一个中 餐馆端盘子的工作没有维持多久,因为他的动作缓慢,站在那里 像一个经理而非端盘子的工人。田浩江1987年在丹佛大学的拉 蒙特音乐学院完成了他的声乐硕士学位。 1990年,田浩江终于实现了他的目标:成为一名专业的音乐 家。同时获得两场重要的试唱机会——一次于周三在纽约市歌 剧院,一场于周五在大都会歌剧院,那是他人生中最重要的一 个星期。他没有被市歌剧院录取,在大都会的那次试唱中,他的 伴奏竟然没出现。当他临上场时抓住另一个在场的钢琴伴奏的 衣领,焦急地恳求问他是否可以为自己伴奏,钢琴家胆怯地同意 了,同他一起走上舞台。 现在,田浩江为中国年轻的歌唱艺术家们提供了一个自己从 未有过的机会,帮助他们磨练声乐技能。除了各项表演以外,那 些参与《我唱北京》的西方音乐家们也将开展一些中西方的现 代歌剧曲目的辅导课和演讲课来着重培养角色的塑造,声音和 表演的传达。学习中文这个新的戏剧语言是个创举,由中国国家 汉语国际推广领导小组办公室和美国亚裔表演艺术中心联合举 办,继承了通过表演艺术来促进中西方外交和互相了解的传统。 为了促进美国人在华学习的美国国务院“十万强”计划将《我唱 北京》作为其在表演艺术领域的唯一认可项目。

He finally came to the U.S. in 1983 with only $35 in his pocket. That didn’t stop him from buying a standing pass at the Metropolitan Opera to see his very first opera, Ernani, starring Luciano Pavarotti—with whom Tian would perform exactly 10 years later on the same stage. From New York, Tian headed to Denver, Colorado to pursue his Master’s Degree in Voice at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music. His scholarship did not cover living expenses, so he found work as a dishwasher in a student union . He also worked as a bus boy in a Chinese restaurant, but was fired shortly after because he was too slow and stood around like a manager, not a bus boy. He completed his Master’s program in 1987. By 1990, Tian had returned to New York and realized his goal: he was a professional musician. Soon came the biggest week of his life thus far, with two big auditions on his plate—one at City Opera on a Wednesday and another at the Met on a Friday. City Opera passed on him, and when he showed up at the Met, his accompaniment was late. In desperation, he grabbed the collar of the first available pianist and pleaded with him to play for his audition. The pianist, although alarmed, agreed, and together they went on the stage. Now, Tian is helping young Chinese vocal artists hone their talent by providing them with an opportunity he never had. In addition to the performance series, the visiting artists of I SING BEIJING are studying Mandarin as a lyric language through coaching sessions in both Western and modern Chinese operatic repertoire, performance classes that emphasis character building and vocal and dramatic delivery. The initiative, launched jointly by the Chinese Language Council International and the Asian Performing Arts Council, follows the tradition of strengthening diplomacy and mutual understanding between China and the West through the performing arts. I SING BEIJING is the first performing arts program embraced by the U.S. State Department’s 100K Strong Initiative, an effort aimed at dramatically increasing and diversifying the number of Americans studying in China.

Tian recently created and performed a one-man show titled From Mao to the Met, which is based on his autobiography Along the Roaring River and which was televised nationwide by PBS. He currently lives with his wife Martha in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, one block from Lincoln Center. In the summertime, Mr. and Mrs. Tian like to fish on Lake Megunticook in Camden, Maine. As he reflects on his career, Tian acknowledges his tough and wild ride. Highlights of his career include playing Mephistopheles in Gounod’s Faust and Philip II in Verdi’s Don Carlos. He hopes to play the title role in Modest Mussorgsky’s Boris Goudunov.

Shoes, once seen as a means of protection from the elements and support for the body, have evolved since the Renaissance and Baroque periods into symbols of status and style. Platforms were originally created to keep the wearer out of the muck of medieval streets; now, heels, wedges and platforms are credited with elongating a figure and empowering the wearer. The right shoe can communicate power, sex appeal and glamour, and there are a myriad of designers from which to select, from storied cordonniers like Roger Vivier and Salvatore Ferragamo to contemporary icons like Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik.

AST SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER, leading fashion houses presented commendable options for luxury shoppers to debate over and splurge on. Highlights were heavy in Paris, as usual, and leading the pack was Phoebe Philo, who had another hit collection with sensibly structured daywear that played with boxy proportions. Marc Jacobs’ Candy Land fun house at Louis Vuitton consisted of pastel couture and epitomized Parisian craftsmanship with a slew of delicate, flower-cutout dresses. Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough for Proenza Schouler kept things fitted, girly and floral, as did Dolce & Gabbana and Prada; the latter saw Miuccia Prada clash 50s-era drive-in cinema style with a feminine edge. Valentino’s Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri took the label to a near haute couture level with intricate lace and floral gowns that were elegant and fuss-free. Christopher Bailey of Burberry continued to stress the modern woman’s wardrobe staple, the summer coat, with a variety of belted trenches that are perfect for unpredictable weather. Of course, the usual legends Karl Lagerfeld and Oscar de la Renta had success with themes ranging from sea elegance to masterful brocade and tulle magic.

A few labels did it best: Peter Dundas of Emilio Pucci took fashionistas on a gypsy journey with vagabond lavishness in the form of two-piece dresses, tulle/lace combos, and bold billowy organza skirts. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana envisioned a Sophia Loren al mare for their collection. Flowery bathing suits, corsets and two-pieces came down the runway in bold colors. Prada too played peek-a-boo with midriff outfits that had a jukebox/ rock ‘n’ roll attitude.

UNDER THE SEA Karl Lagerfeld may be getting all the credit for his Chanel pearl and water spectacle at Le Grand Palais in Paris, but numerous other designers have embraced the opal, translucent and seaside trend. Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen painstakingly crafted gowns that had a coral/sea creature element. Some looks resembled seaweed, while other had a glossy, metallic fish-scale fi nish. Riccardo Tisci referenced sea life with exotic skins such as stingray, eel and polished leathers. The sequins and folds on his pieces gave the appearance of kelp and crustaceans, while gigantic shark tooth necklaces added some attitude. Keep your outfit tame with pearl and pastel sea shades for daytime and stick with flashy numbers for night. For those who brave the ocean waters, the one-piece bathing suit is le look du jour. Michael Kors, Norma Kamali and Chanel all offered fantastic options.

From tiny checks to full-sized tartan patters, this traditional look will remain king through winter. For summer, incorporate gingham, cotton plaids and lightweight check materials. Etro, Umit Benan and Canali had subtle plaids that were elegant in summer cashmere and silk, whereas Frida Giannini of Gucci gave her checks rockstar appeal. Raf Simons played with a variety of pattern configurations on his plaid-fi lled collection shown in Paris. Walter Van Beirendonck and Jean Paul Gaultier also kept Parisian plaids alive and well with their collections. Ermenegildo Zegna incorporated plaids and stripes on the most subtle of scales on a few of its fine-tailored suits and jackets.

Michael Kors’ cargo-wearing man was on safari. The designer presented olive and tan shorts and pants made of airy fabrics that worked well. Dress your cargos up with a button-up and tie or keep things easy and casual by pairing them with a casual tee-shirt and blazer. While all those pockets can be overwhelming, select a pair that fits slimly to the body to avoid looking bulky. Stefano Pilati of Yves Saint Laurent provided a prime example of cargo-military styles that maintained a sleek line. Shorts as a whole were front and center on the runway, with some of the world’s most esteemed labels sending out dozens of looks. In Milan, Marni led the pack, and in Paris, Lanvin Homme’s Lucas Ossendrijver and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons included short-shorts. SUMMER 2012 | 75

HE MENTION OF GEOFFREY BRADFIELD TO ANY NEW YORK interior design insider sparks depictions of opulent and fanciful spaces. In a career spanning some thirty-odd years, he has carved out his own niche in the world of luxury interior design. It is perhaps inconceivable that Mr. Bradfield, who grew up on a farm in rural South Africa, wound up dining with European royalty, renovating King Hussein’s massive estate in Maryland and sitting on the panel of judges for the China’s Most Successful Designs Awards Competition. Mr. Bradfield tells YUE over coffee at his iconic townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side that he believes a key to his success “is enjoying the challenge of bringing individual meaning to a room.” His skill at blending elegance and modernity while valuing local resources and influences is rare, and he carefully avoids conforming to a cookie-cutter style. Geoffrey Bradfield began his young-adult life touring Asia, Oceania, Europe and America while serving for South Africa’s regimental army. After he fulfi lled his requirements, he began working in interior design, and his fascination with design and art grew. For his fi rst signifi cant project, he updated the Johannesburg apartment of South African theatre legend Pieter Toerien. That was at the youthful age of 23. “It garnered me a lot of attention. Of course, everything is relative and I was swimming in a very small pond,” explained the designer. “It gave me enormous confidence.”

Bradfield left South Africa in 1977 to launch his career in Manhattan, a place in which he had longed to live since his teens and which be pivotal to his success. “Whilst doing my army training, on a weekend pass, I saw the fi lm Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It was Patricia Neal’s role of the rich socialite and her kept boy, George Peppard. There’s something so extravagant about the scene set in that exquisite love nest and how she played it out…it made me want to live in a city of that sophistication,” commented the designer. Making waves in New York with its stiff competition and social distractions wasn’t easy, but his career soon took off. In the 80s, Bradfield established his own fi rm. He soon attracted Fortune 500 clients and oversaw massive refurbishments at royal residences. Naturally, there were disasters along the way. Bradfield recalled a time when his client, the renowned entrepreneur and collector Frederick Weisman, insisted that a newly purchased Noguchi granite coffee table be hoisted by crane to a sixth-floor lounge. “I worked tirelessly all day to achieve this complicated maneuver and ready the place for cocktails, which would be followed by yet another night at Studio 54. Guests began to arrive, among them [Andy] Warhol, who by then was a ubiquitous habitué of the party circuit. When the feat was completed, I fi xed myself a well-deserved drink and sank into a sofa. To my horror, I looked down to witness a black line racing toward me at some speed, like a snake slithering across the marble surface. The staggering weight of the granite table had sent a serious crack through the floor! We had to vacate the building post haste.”

Mishaps notwithstanding, Bradfield can list dozens of exceptional experiences. He worked for the late Queen Mother of England and executed the overhaul of the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney estate in Old Westbury, Long Island. More recently, he upgraded the 200 room Equinox Resort in Vermont for the Starwood Luxury Collection. Bradfield’s fi rm recently completed a project in London’s Eaton Square for a Persian princess. “I consider designing one’s own home to be the ultimate privilege,” he said, describing the project as one of his most challenging to date. “What appears to be a single seamless apartment today is, actually, the lateral conversion of two floors of adjacent terrace houses. It was a Herculean task. We had to cope with weight-bearing beams that divided the two houses. But we were determined to achieve this vista with a gracious central aperture. So brick by brick, we moved the flues to center the passage. The British masons thought we were insane. It took fortitude and courage and was very costly, but well worth the effort.” Bradfield has worked extensively with Chinese clients and in China itself, as well as throughout Asia. He has conducted projects in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Malaysia, Tokyo and Hong Kong. “They’re so in advance of what we’re doing here…the technology is making selection [of products] so much more exciting and accessible,” he said earnestly about China.

It was fascinating to discover that Feng Shui is an exact science and can be measured. So much of the practice is simple common sense…balance and harmony. It was my fi rst visit to China and I was enthralled.” Bradfield was also recently the only American asked to serve on the panel of judges for the China’s Most Successful Designs Awards Competition. “I was flattered to participate and pleased to see China take its place on the international design stage.” He said he is often intrigued by burgeoning Chinese artists. “Their creative vision puts a new spin on the genus. Among the many, Liao Yibai, whose current collection ‘Real Fake’ is stunning. I am also enamored of the work of the Luo Brothers and Sui Jianguo, whose pieces I have showcased in famed movie director Oliver Stone’s New York residence.” At present, Bradfield has dozens of projects and new ventures on his plate—his fi fth book, A 21st-Century Palace, hit shelves in mid-May. This follows the success of tomes Millennium Modern and Ex Arte. He continues his popular textile lines with Stark and Old World Weavers and is collaborating with Kyle Bunting for a new furniture collection. Bradfield said these “have received enthusiastic reviews and awards. They are sold through retail avenues, at auction as art pieces, and [are] included in international museum exhibitions.” 80 | SUMMER 2012

My clients’ profi les are very high… But the projects I do believe I can really discuss: We’re doing an amazing 200,000 square-foot house outside of Shanghai. We’re also on the short list for an extraordinary project in Guangzhou, outside of Hong Kong.” Bradfield’s grueling schedule may see him jet to London for a site visit before he zips off to Dubai or New Delhi. “They say if you want to get something done, put it on a busy desk,” he said. He maintains an impressive social calendar, darting from gala to gala and hosting a slew of parties, all while balancing his high professional demand. Bradfield rarely has time to escape for a recharge. “My work is very much a part of my psyche, so even when I escape, my mind is constantly being turned on by ideas,” he said. A recent adventure to Burma provided such an opportunity for inspiration and discovery. Every year, he treats a small circle of established “chums” to a retreat somewhere around the world. Previous trips include Ireland, Egypt, France, Marrakech and Italy. For 2012, Bradfield will play host on a five-home estate in Bali for ten days. “My biggest fear is being bored, a sentiment I like to share with my clients,” Bradfield stated. This may explain why he is continually the interior designer of choice for billionaires and the global jet set. “I have never been afraid of challenging my audience and have always been willing to embrace our period in time. I like to think that my work represents 21st-century style. Glamour is a constant ingredient in all of my designs.” he concluded.

What we needed to find was a chef whose style of cuisine matches the values of YUE and all its unique aspects. The cuisine needed to bring together China and New York, itself a large melting pot of diverse cultures. The food also needed to satisfy the demanding palates of the social elite, including celebrities like Lang Lang and Donald Trump. The dishes served needed to showcase the creativity and energy essential to the birth of a new magazine. Lastly, a bit of star power and name recognition certainly would not hurt. One chef managed to check off all the boxes. The painstaking search lead us to the soft-spoken yet highly passionate Chef Angelo Sosa, widely known as the fan favorite on Bravo’s Top Chef and Top Chef All-Stars cooking competition shows. At first glance, Chef Sosa probably wasn’t the most obvious pick. He was born to Italian Dominican parents in Connecticut and was mentored in the kitchens of many esteemed French chefs. Halfway into his still very young career, he developed an obsession with Asian flavors, which is now the theme that defines him. For this, Chef Sosa credits another great chef and fusion innovator, Jean-Georges Vongerichten: “Growing up, I had the spices of Dominican cuisine in my blood, but my mentor Jean-Georges Vongerichten exposed me to Asian flavors.” Sosa also avoids being cast as a chef of any specific cuisine, instead stating that his style is “Defined not by cuisine, but by flavors.” That’s also why Chef Sosa’s most recent cookbook, Flavor Exposed, is categorized by flavor profi les rather than the traditional appetizer-mains-dessert model. It has become increasingly rare to see chefs unabashedly embrace the term fusion. 20 years ago, the concept of fusing the culinary techniques and flavors of different cultures was loved by critics and diners alike and helped launch the careers of chefs such as Nobu Matsuhisa, who masterfully blended Peruvian and Japanese flavors. As the years went by, less talented chefs flooded the market with their own fusion creations, and fusion started to become synonymous with unfocused, misguided flavors. Therefore, it is refreshing to see an accomplished chef wave the fusion flag proudly. “I’m a firm believer of fusion, and will not shy away from it,” said Sosa. “The foundation is based on extensive travel, research, and reading, so that I can preserve tradition, but put a new slant on it.”

This belief is abundantly showcased at Chef Sosa’s newest Midtown restaurant, Social Eatz, where the menu features items that at first glance are quite accessible to the average diner but that feature an added Asian twist of flavor. The finest example is the Bimbimbap Burger, which takes the all-American concept of a hamburger and infuses it with Korean ingredients found in a Bimbimbop. “My cooking is all about dancing through various parts of Asia, playing with flavors,” said Sosa. “Food should be seductive. Introduce new flavors while staying approachable. So that the experience is approachable but transporting.” When it came to actually planning the menu for the party, Chef Sosa’s ideas came across as bold and original, taking into consideration the flavor, availability of prime ingredients, and the way the food will be served. The first item he came up with was a “cha xiao bao” with watermelon and pork belly, finished with sweet sesame oil. The combination of the rich, heavy flavor of pork belly and contrasting seasonal watermelon makes for an interesting pair in texture and flavor, and the cha xiao bao format makes it great for an event. Other ideas included a fish taco, created Japanese-style with raw fish and sriracha, and sweetbreads with black pepper sauce. “I want to bring flavors from the Far East to Midtown East. Something that’s sweet, sour and seductive,” said Sosa, as he tries to interpret the palates of the guests at the event. “My cooking will bring back memories and create new memories. Seduce and entice them.” Judging from the reactions of the guests at the launch event, everyone was very much seduced and enticed by Chef Sosa’s creations. As the food continued to flow out of the kitchen, I managed to track him down halfway through the party to ask him a question that I was dying to know. What are the fantastic spices that he puts on the fries? I am completely infatuated with the flavor and simply had to know his secret. “Love.”

Chinese Auction Houses Entering NYC DURING THE TUMULTUOUS YEARS of the early twentieth century, many of China’s most precious cultural artifacts were taken out of the country and brought to the West. One century later, China is beginning to reclaim the treasures of its cultural heritage. China’s wealthy are more eager than ever to own a piece of their nation’s history—and more willing than ever to pay record-breaking prices for it. With a surging domestic market for art in China, the country’s fast-growing auction houses are willing and able to provide buyers with access to those otherwise elusive treasures. Founded in 2005, Beijing Council International Auction Co. Ltd. is a prime example of this twenty-first century phenomenon. Its principle of “insistence upon integrity” has garnered it numerous awards, notably the 2011 “Auction House of the Year” award from the finance and style magazine L’OFFICIEL for its record-breaking sales (which totaled two billion renminbi) in the spring of 2011. Wendy Wu of Beijing Council’s North American Representative Office informs YUE that the auction house has established its own office in New York City and has organized events such as an art collectors’ conference at the Sheraton New York Hotel; she also indicates that it ranks first in the world in the sale of ancient Chinese paintings and manuscripts. Clearly, it is in an ideal position to link American supply with Chinese demand. Yet, as Company President Dong Guoqiang explains, there is an even deeper significance to its success: “I hope that Beijing Council will become a company with cultural ideals; winning an award is great encouragement. In the future, Beijing Council will…make every effort to reveal and unearth the deeper value of the goods at auction.” As demonstrated by the striking case of one particular artifact, repatriation is just such a “cultural ideal.” The artifact in question is a calligraphy scroll dating from the Yuan Dynasty, commissioned in 1297 A.D. by the Chengzong Emperor; part of its lengthy, poetic Chinese name translates to “Auspicious Crane Poem.” By the beginning of the twenty-first century, it had ended up in a private collection in San Francisco. Once Beijing Council acquired the scroll in 2011, it immediately realized that this object had potential.

Yet even Beijing Council could not have anticipated just how extraordinary—or how desired—it was. The scroll’s December 3, 2011 auction was unprecedented, with the price of the scroll skyrocketing from five million RMB to an astonishing one hundred million, the highest price in history for a Yuan Dynasty artifact. The scroll was finally returned to China through its Chinese buyer, having made its mark as a stunning example of the desire of Chinese art connoisseurs to reclaim their nation’s cultural inheritances. Dong reflects on the record-breaking sale: “I have encountered some other collectors and buyers abroad; their impression of China’s auction industry at the time was not very positive, and they lacked a kind of faith in Chinese enterprises…I hope that they can dispel this misgiving and establish trust in the domestic auction industry. I think, in the end, all of our hard work will accomplish this.” Beijing Council is not the only auction house making its mark in the world of art acquisition and repatriation. The major auction houses Beijing Poly International Auction Co., Ltd. and China Guardian Auctions—two of the largest auction houses in China—have successfully engaged with the American market. Both auction houses have established offices in New York City, and both have repatriated cultural artifacts back to China. Poly Auction has successfully recovered artifacts from the Summer Palace, while China Guardian has directed the purchase and repatriation of many valuable Chinese cultural artifacts that had previously been overseas, several of them dating from the Qing Dynasty and earlier. While co-op buildings have traditionally hesitated to accept individuals from overseas into their elite coteries, the influx of foreign buyers into the hyper-luxury market over the past few years has altered this established norm. “New York City is a dynamic place comprised of hardworking people. I feel our Chinese values matchup perfectly with those of New Yorkers.” says Grace Leung Levin of Town, a real estate fi rm. Buyers looking for tall, new high-rises should generally direct their attention elsewhere, but those in search of classical refinement and traditional American luxury will feel quite at home on the UES.

TRIBECA On the other side of town, and the other side of the spectrum, TriBeCa (which stands for “Triangle Below Canal”) has become one of Manhattan’s most fashionable and expensive residential areas. With good schools, fi ne dining and sprawling loft spaces, the neighborhood has boomed in the past decade, with seven- and eight-figure spaces regularly listed on the market. Raphael De Niro, a managing director at Prudential Douglas Elliman, suggested several reasons for TriBeCa’s immense popularity in recent years. “It kind of found that right balance between residential and commercial,” he said. Indeed, the neighborhood’s cobblestone streets and relative lack of retail traffic creates a quiet coherence not found in many other corners of the city. Mr. De Niro explained that TriBeCa’s “close proximity to other great neighborhoods like West Village and SoHo” is also a central draw. Like the Upper East Side, TriBeCa’s landmark status prevents developers from building high-rise apartment buildings. Most of the top residential buildings in TriBeCa, however, are converted industrial buildings, carefully renovated with luxury buyers in mind. New conversion projects like 250 West and Cobblestone Loft at 28 Laight Street offer uptown-style amenities, including roof decks, fitness rooms, parking garages and full-service attendants. As Ms. Levin says, “Many of my international buyers feel more comfortable with the amenities and community feel that a new building provides.” Aside from the long-settled celebrity residents, the neighborhood is becoming increasingly popular among foreign investors and homebuyers, Mr. De Niro explained.

WEST VILLAGE Like TriBeCa, the West Village offers elegant living outside of the traditional luxury real estate box. With townhouses lining the quiet streets, the neighborhood is particularly appealing to families. Robby Browne of the Corcoran Group, an established broker who has worked extensively in the area, described the neighborhood in familiar terms. “It really is a village,” he said. “It just feels different. It’s got a different texture.” While the West Village may indeed reflect the city’s colorful character, there are options for those who tolerate only the fi nest residential fabrics. Superior Ink, a new development at 400 West 12th Street, offers a unique combination of townhouses and condos in a sumptuous, full-service setting. Units currently on the market in the building range from $10.7 million to $35.7 million. By and large, however, real estate in the West Village is limited to townhouses and smaller condo buildings. Although townhouses are rarely delivered to new buyers in mint condition, the investment may be worthwhile, as Mr. Browne suggests that more and more luxury buyers are moving to the area. “That seems to be where so many people want to be.” he said.

Over 140 watch executives raised glasses at the Carlyle Hotel on April 28, 2012 to kick off the 2nd Annual Madison Avenue Watch Week, which was sponsored by The Wall Street Journal Magazine. Eighteen of the world’s most prominent watch retailers and brands were featured in Watch Week, fifteen of which displayed their newest state-of-the-art timepieces from the international Basel World 2012 world watch and jewelry show in the United States for the first time. Until May 4th, connoisseurs, businessmen, casual collectors and citizens witnessed Blancpain, Chopard, David Yurman, de Grisogono, F.P. Journe, Georg Jensen, Montblanc, and Vacheron Constantin, among other luxury watch brands, premiere some of their finest timepieces, watches that will define fashion for generations to come. Accompanied by the tunes of resident pianist Ear Rose’s original compositions, guests enjoyed “The Ticker” specialty cocktail with fi ne wines and champagne while checking out the unique gallery of watches on opening night. 兵马俑: 中国始皇帝的守 卫兵 在发现时代广场的《兵马俑:中国始皇帝的守卫 兵》展览是现代历史意义最重大的考古发现的文 物之一。 一走进展览厅,参观者会首先通过一段教育 视频简单了解兵马俑的历史背景。展览中20多件 追溯到公元前221年的文物包括一套从未展出过的汉代墓门。届 时参观者们将有机会近距离观赏十件与真人大小相符的陶塑士 兵俑。展览更设有中文和英文的讲解。展览的成人票价为25美 元,4到12岁的儿童票价为19.50美元,而65岁以上的长者票价为 22.50美元。 2012年5月23日,众多著名中国代表出席了开幕庆典,当中包 括大都会歌剧院《蝴蝶夫人》服装设计师韩枫、陕西省文物局副 局长刘云辉,以及中国驻纽约总领事孙国祥。 该展览是华美协进社和发现时代广场联合举办的。对于两 者的合作关系,华美协进社社长江芷若女士道表示: “华美协进 社成立于1926年,通过教育、文化和艺术的展览及项目来提高人 们对中国的深入理解。我们非常高兴能参与举办这个开创性的 展览,把兵马俑及其历史介绍到纽约来。”

TERRACOTTA WARRIORS: Defenders of China’s First Emperor

“Terracotta Warriors: Defenders of China’s First Emperor” at Discovery Times Square features one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of all time. The exhibition starts with an educational video clip that briefly covers the historical background of the terracotta warriors. The exhibit displays over twenty artifacts dating as far back as 221 B.C., including a Han Dynasty tomb door that has never before been exhibited. Visitors have the unique opportunity to closely approach ten of the life-sized clay soldiers. The exhibition has Chinese and English narration. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $19.50 for children between the ages of 4-12, and $22.50 for seniors over 65. The opening celebration on May 23, 2012 was an event that gathered many notable Chinese delegates, including Han Feng (costume designer of the Metropolitan Opera’s Madame Butterfly), Liu Yunhui (Deputy Director General of Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau), and Sun Guoxiang (Consul General of China in New York City). The exhibition was a joint undertaking between the China Institute and Discovery Times Square. China Institute President Sara McCalpin says of the Institute’s participation in the partnership: “The China Institute was founded in 1926 with the purpose of promoting thorough knowledge of China through educational, cultural and artistic exhibitions and programs. We are delighted to participate in this innovative exhibition and to introduce the terracotta warriors and their history to New York.”
