Before the digipak there was…. THE JEWEL CASE
The jewel case • A jewel case is the plasAc case that holds CDs. • Jewel cases tend to be made of clear plasAc, although they are someAmes made of Anted plasAc that is sAll transparent. • They are made up of a front cover that pivots open to the leI (as you are holding the CD), a back cover and a tray that sits in the back cover which holds the CD. • The front cover artwork is held in the front cover part of the jewel case ‐ this is the booklet with photos, dedicaAon notes to friends family, fans etc…, lyrics and such ‐ and the back cover holds the tray card, which usually has the track lisAng and other artwork on the back side that can be viewed with the CD closed
The pros and cons of the jewel case • They crack easily, especially the front cover which has no support underneath it. • The price does increase with special features, like clear tray, slim line case or colored plasAc. • However, they are the cheapest opAon for CD packaging, which makes them appealing for new arAsts who would try to minimise their cost

The Digipak • Digipaks are a style of compact disc that consist of a bookstyle paperboard or card binding with one or more trays to hold the CD. • They were among the first alternaAves to jewel cases to be used my major record companys.
The pros and cons of the Digipak • Its less resistant to abrasion than jewel cases,it shows signs of wear and tear rather quickly,which would be a nightmare for fans. • Although less vulnerable to cracking than a jewel case, the disc tray inside the package remains rather briSle and is likely to crack. • The digipack is more compact and arAsAc in its designs which is useful for collectors.
Our opinion • We prefer the digipack because it shows more artwork and photos which is valuable to the fans because in a way we are geUng more of the band.
