Tradition may be getting a new neighbor

Christ Fellowship’s new pastor extends warm family welcome

TRADITION — New neighbors got a narrow nod to start building. “I think it’s a good project and I want to see it get off the ground,” Martin County Commissioner John Haddox said at a recent meeting. Whoa, wait. Martin County? Yep. There might be a bridge in Tradition’s future. Drive south on Tradition’s Village Parkway long enough and there’s a four-way stop that makes no sense. The intersection with Becker Road is now a traffic L funneling traffic north and east. Lights for the non-existent eastbound drivers on Becker make sense. Looking west, it’s easy to see how development will fill in the land and road with cars will appear. But lights are up to tell northbound drivers on the Parkway when to stop and go. But, there’s no northbound traffic going through the intersection and it seems like there can’t ever be. It doesn’t seem like there could ever be more Village Parkway south of Becker. The County Line Canal, C-23, is only about

TRADITION — Barna Group, an evangelical Christian polling firm based in Ventura, Calif., reports in Year in Review: Barna’s Top 10 Findings in 2015 that not only has church attendance dropped significantly, but after 60,0000 interviews conducted over a 7-year period, more than 44 percent of Americans qualify as “post-Christian,” with women taking the lead in disengaging from church culture. Opening a new church may seem risky in light of those re-

cent statistics. The United States Census Bureau of Records reported that more than 4,000 churches close their doors annually, and 2.7 million churchgoers become inactive and eventually leave. Compared to the rest of the world, The United States now ranks 3rd, trailing behind China and India in the number of people who profess to be non-Christian. However, last weekend, Christ Fellowship opened the doors of their Port St. Lucie campus, located in Tradition, with an amazing turnout. Leading with a widely successful “At the Movies” series from

2015, more than 4,000 visitors in a single day arrived on Grand Opening Day. Guests had to park at the public school parking lot down the road. Originally, church services were scheduled for 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. This week, they announced three service times. Starting July 24, church service times are 8:30 a.m, 10:30 a.m, and 12:30 p.m. Visitors can expect to be greeted at the door by volunteers, offered free popcorn, snacks, and bottled water, along with golf cart rides to cars, and ushers dressed up like movie-theater attendants.

IT’S NO SECRET WHY OUR PATIENTS LOVE US! JOE MUTTER EVALUATES PATIENTS FOR HEARING LOSS THROUGH A SERIES OF COMPREHENSIVE TESTS. HE OFFERS SOLUTIONS BASED ON YOUR NEEDS AND LIFESTYLE. HE’S NOT HERE TO SELL YOU - HE JUST WANTS TO HELP YOU HEAR BETTER.

BEING THE BEST IS NOT A RACE , IT’S A JOURNEY . . . I made an appointment with a local hearing center, Mutter’s Hearing Center in St. Lucie West, and the ensuing experience changed my life.

Helen G. Eaton

“Joe was extremely patient and thoroughly explained things in ways anyone could understand. He made me feel comfortable and confident.” “Now, I can adjust my hearings aids to fit the needs of my situation. Now, I can hear everything. I can even hear at the bar at Duffy’s”

I needed to improve the quality of my life by hearing better. I have been wearing my hearing aids since November 2013 and my quality of life has improved greatly. I would never go anywhere else for my hearing healthcare needs...

Mr. & Mrs. John Orlandi St Lucie West

Sincerely Carolyn DuBrin

Carolyn DuBrin

After Joe first put in my new aids and asked me to step outside, I was shocked at the beautiful sounds that sprang to life upon that first step outside. The birds, the cars, the horns, the wind. How much have I been missing all these years, why did I wait so long to get a hearing check up? Joe Mutter proved to us that he is a true professional. A kind hearted soul that really cares about his clients.

“Joe was the first one who could make hearing possible and comfortable. He was patient and kind,” said Dr. Costas. “Joe sat with Aunt Mary until she was comfortable using them and then he made her come back multiple times until he was satisfied. He saved Aunt Mary from a nursing home

Buhrman had tried several hearing aids costing several thousands of dollars but when she met Joe Mutter and tried her hearing aids for the first time, the whole world changed. “I fell down on my knees and thanked God for bringing me to that miracle man, Joe Mutter,”

Clergy strive to bring people of all faiths together Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — The terrible events in Orlando last month were the impetus for an interfaith prayer meeting June 14, sponsored by the Interfaith Clergy Alliance of St. Lucie County. The Alliance includes members the clergy from Christian, Jewish and Muslim congregations. In a digital statement, the Alliance said that as faith leaders, they denounced all violence. “Once again, a specific group has been targeted by unthinkable violence. No faith teaches such action, including Islam. We are all created in God’s image. All religions teach us to love our neighbors and to understand that our diversity is God’s gift to us. We are united in crying for those hurt in any acts of violence, especially such acts of unspeakable violence as were experienced in Orlando.” Rabbi Shafir Lobb of Congregation Eitz Chayim and the Jewish Federation for the Treasure Coast spoke by phone about the need for dialogue. ᾐ

“My experience with interfaith alliances was in Tucson,” she said. “We had gotten to a place where we came together when there was strife in the community. One of the times was during one of the conflicts in Lebanon and in Gaza. At a time when there were riots and unrest at communities all over the U.S. about the Middle East, Tucson did not have them.” Lobb was also in Tucson when Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot and the community again came together. One of the initiatives Lobb and others put together in Tucson was an annual Peace Walk. One year it would start at a mosque and end at a synagogue and the next year, it was reversed. “It was a great event,” she said, “We met for prayers and the walk. During the walk people talked about sports and their kids. When we got to the arrival location, there were activities and a shared meal supplied by the Buddhist community. There was structured dialogue at the end. It was wonderful and it still goes on. I’d love to do something

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Details are thin at press time, but a Boldly Black protest is scheduled for Saturday, July 23, in Port St. Lucie. A Facebook page created on Tuesday, July 12, states it’ll start at Coco Vista Plaza, at the intersection of Port St. Lucie and Cameo boulevards at 9 a.m. with a march to the Port St. Lucie city complex at 121 S.W. Port St. Lucie Blvd. That’s where the police department is. At press time organizers have been unavailable for interviews. At the Facebook event page, organizers say there’ll be speakers and music at the end of the march. Additionally, organizers say the event will raise money for the families of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. Both were fatally shot by police recently — Sterling in Baton Rouge, La.; Castile near St. Paul, Minn. Their deaths set off demonstrations throughout the county. One turned deadly in Dallas when Micah Xavier Johnson ambushed police at a demonstration organized by Black Lives Matter. He killed five officers and injured nine others in a sniper attack. Dallas police killed Johnson with a bomb attached to a robot. At the regular city council meeting on Monday, July 11, Mayor Greg Oravec said he wanted the city to consider body cameras and additional vehicular plate reading equipment for its police. “Not only do we have concerns about violence against police officers, but there’s the other side, concerns about violence against black people and people of dif-

ferent races, and you have to be sensitive to both sides,” Oravec said at the meeting. Additionally, Oravec said he wanted the council to look into racial diversity at the city. “From a diversity standpoint, I’d like to continue the discussion of shouldn’t our workforce, especially our police department, reflect the community they serve?,” he said. In an interview after the meeting, Oravec said that during his employment with the city — which spanned about 12 years, including as the assistant city manager and city manager — and since his election in 2014, he’s not heard a large number of complaints about city police mistreating minorities. “Personally in my capacity as mayor, I’m proud of the job our police department does,” Oravec said. “I think they do a great job.” He noted that Port St. Lucie has consistently been ranked as one of the safest places to live in Florida. “What goes into doing a great job is continual improvement,” Oravec said. He added, “That’s why I bring up these additional tools.” Oravec said he’d like discussions on the council about diversity training police receive. At press time he hadn’t spoken with organizers of the Boldly Black protest. Oravec said he welcomes any event that raises the community’s awareness of issues and problems. Additionally, the mayor is working with others to create what they hope to be an annual forum on race relations and inclusion. That’s being tentatively scheduled for September.

No emergency declaration from federal government Rally For The River slated for Saturday Editor’s note: Due to the fast-moving nature of the bluegreen algae bloom and related events, some information at press time could change by publication.

Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — The Rally For The River & Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup will be on Saturday, July 23, starting at

Dear Editor: My wife and I have been residents of Port St. Lucie since February 1980. We have watched Port St. Lucie grow from a whistle-stop on U.S. Highway 1 with a lot of pride and satisfaction. We were excited when Thomas J. White built the St. Lucie Stadium and the bridge over the highway to St. Lucie West. We were thrilled to see the further expansion of St. Lucie West to Tradition and, hopefully, Southern Grove. Over the years, Port St. Lucie has expanded, made some mistakes, but on the whole has grown into one of the most wonderful places to live in all Florida. Tradition and St. Lucie West have grown exponentially along with the city. It has retained that small town atmosphere which makes it so attractive as folks continue to

8:30 a.m. The Florida Oceanographic Society is hosting the rally and cleanup. It’ll be on the eastern side of the Stuart Causeway, Ocean Boulevard. It’ll start at 8:30 a.m. One thing’s certain—there’ll be a lot of fired up folks there ready to tell the state and federal governments to get it together. Commissioners from Martin and St. Lucie counties headed to Washington D.C. last week for the Lagoon-Gulf Action Day put together by representatives Patrick Murphy and Curt Clawson. The commissioners liked

what they were hearing from federal officials. Then Gov. Rick Scott got a “No” from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. On Friday, July 15, FEMA administrator, W. Craig Fugate, sent Scott a letter telling him — therefore the Treasure Coast — there’ll be no federal declaration of emergency over the blue-green algae filling parts of the St. Lucie and Indian rivers. The governor had 30 days to appeal the decision. Gov. Scott declared a state of emergency in Martin and St. Lucie counties last month. The governor’s declaration applies

only to the state. Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith said it’s tempting to play a blame game over the federal government’s refusal to declare a state of emergency, but he sees it as a problem that starts at home. “The discussion was that we, both here in Martin County and at the state level, need to provide more factual documentation to support the request,” he said. “If we have not supplied them with the data and analysis to

relocate here. A matter has arisen which is disturbing to us and many other citizens, however. With no fanfare, and so far as I know, no communication with the public, the reconstruction work on the roads and their beautifully landscaped medians here in Tradition commenced a short time ago. I am sure that the responsible folks who developed the area

obtained the necessary authority to build the roads and scenery spots prevalent in the area. I am equally sure that at the time those facilities all passed city inspection and on a timely basis. Rumor has it that the city is going to take over the road system here in Tradition, and that there were apparently things allowed that were against the city construction codes. If that were so, why

were the permits issued otherwise? Whatever, the road facilities looked great, functioned beautifully, and added immensely to the charm of Port St. Lucie. There is some concern that the financial outlay for this construction would be of better use in the construction of sidewalks or some other worthy project within the whole of Port St. Lucie. To dispel rumors to the contrary and to inform the folks in St. Lucie West and Tradition, it would be appreciated if you (Your Voice News & Views) would provide an article in your publication informing the public of just what is going on and why, and why, with the new reconstruction of the transportation network here in Tradition.

In America, our vote is our voice, and voting for Linda Gausten for the Port St. Lucie City Council is giving a voice not just to the problems facing our city, but to real solutions. Linda didn’t just wake up one day and decide to run for council — she has been working tirelessly as a non-elected activist in our town informing and leading residents about quality of life issues. She alerted residents to the potential installation of an openair human waste sewage sludge compost facility in our area, which the county commissioners ultimately decided against. Linda also presented a petition to the council asking for a review of the city’s cable ordinances in response to the overwhelming resident dissatisfaction with the current cable company choices. St. Lucie West has summer algae, but it’s not blue-green

ST. LUCIE WEST — It’s a small trickle of worried callers, but St. Lucie West Services District board member Gregg Ney thought that enough to mention it at a meeting: there’s no blue-green algae in St. Lucie West. “None of (the visible algae) is of the blue-green variety, and none of it is toxic,” he said at the board’s specially-scheduled meeting on Tuesday, July 12. William “Bill” Hayden is the district’s assistant district manager and public works director. He said some folks are spotting a filamentous algae in the some of the district’s 128 storm-water retention ponds. “It’s a common algae you see on ponds, retention ponds in Florida,” Hayden said. He added, “It’s common in the summertime.” There are a couple of reasons cyanophyta, or cyanobacteria, is unlikely to head to St. Lucie West. The local bloom started in Lake Okeechobee and almost certainly migrated into the St. Lucie River’s South Fork though the St. Lucie Canal, C-44. From there, the freshwater blue-green algae has moved to the Indian River and even the Atlantic. So far, the cyanobacteria hasn’t been spotted in Port St. Lucie’s share of the river, the North Fork. Currents from the North Fork flow against those of the South Fork. They meet in Stuart and head east. Even if there was blue-green algae in Port St. Lucie, storm water goes from the west to the east in

St. Lucie West, heading toward the St. Lucie River’s North Fork. St. Lucie West is elevated about 18 feet above the river, Hayden said. St. Lucie West is largely insulated from boats inadvertently importing cyanobacteria, because trespassing is forbidden on the district’s waterways. That means boating and even swimming and fishing are off limits. If people abide by the district’s trespassing policy, the chances of importing cyanobacteria on things from other waters are negligible. “We just chemically treat it with copper to get rid of it,” he said. “We treat it for aesthetics. We keep the ponds aesthetically looking nice.” Water in St. Lucie West is regularly tested for the chronic St. Lucie and Indian rivers issue: enteric bacteria. That comes from fecal matter. Much of what’s in the St. Lucie is likely from failing septic tanks’ contents getting washed into the rivers by storm water. Of course, all the homes in St. Lucie West have sewerage, so septic-tank contamination doesn’t exist. Still, Hayden said there are low levels of enteric bacteria in St. Lucie West. “You get it from the birds and the fish,” he said.

Critics liken it to the “Zombie Apocalypse” without the rotting corpses — just adolescents and older folks shuffling around, phones in hand, looking for things that the rest of us can’t comprehend. It’s like a different world. In fact, it is a different world. Pokémon Go is the first “augmented reality” game that has caused such fervor. Augmented reality is a technology where the gameplay is woven into the real world with the help of a mobile device. In Pokémon Go, the phone or tablet’s camera is used to “see” game pieces, characters and other game elements layered on top of the actual image captured by the camera. And on the Treasure Coast, the Pokémon phenomenon is reeling in thousands of players.

I NEED VOLUNTEERS!

Under the leadership of new Senior Pastor Travis Dean, the vision is to strengthen unity among individuals and their families. Pastor Dean, 35, was raised in Dallas. During his junior year at Taylor University, he met his wife of 15 years, Jenni, at Focus on the Family while taking summer college courses. Shortly thereafter, the couple married and relocated to Hobe Sound, where Jenni’s parents kept residence as snowbirds from Ohio. Today, Pastor Dean, his wife, and their five children — Malia, 9, Madeline, 7, Micah, 3, Maeley, 1 and Malachi, 6 months — now join Tradition residents in the launch of the 6th campus of one of the fastest growing churches in the country. This month, Pastor Dean and the new church community have already planned their local involvement to include a visit every fourth Saturday of the month at Treasure Coast Food Bank to help organize food supply needs, and a field trip for children entering grades 4, 5, and 6 to gain experience in hands-on ministry. The church is also gathering school supplies for the Boys and Girls Club of St. Lucie County. According to Christ Fellowship’s Annual Report 2015, “Pastors Todd and Julie knew God was

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Travis Dean, senior pastor at Christ Fellowship Church in Tradition greeted parishoners as they came to the church’s first service Sunday, July 10. calling our church to the city of Port St. Lucie, and we took a step of faith to bring Jesus to that community.” Announcing their intention to open in July 2016. When asked what it’s like to start a new church, he replied, “At first I was overwhelmed by it and a little bit saddened because of my deep love for Stuart Campus. But, as I prayed about it, it was very clear, very quickly, that God was calling me to this campus and to this city.” Pastor Dean and his wife first started out in Christian ministry as house parents, providing care to six teenage boys at Place of Hope, the first faith-based, longterm safe house on the east coast of Florida, another organization founded by Christ Fellowship and located in Palm Beach Gardens. For the past six years, Pastor Dean served as the Discipleship Pastor at the Gardens campus and CF Stuart campus. “Port St. Lucie is a place where we feel like we have just continued to grow and reach different areas,” he said. Specifically, unchurched. Unchurched is a word used to describe individuals who currently do not attend any religious organizations, or have never stepped foot at a church service. Despite the fact that St. Lucie County is home to more than 120 churches of various denominations, according to Barna, the county is in the center of the most unchurched population in the entire United States. Although not unique in approach when it comes to presenting the church to newcomers as a place of community and a second family, Pastor Dean believes what individuals come for the first time, and then later remain on as members, are the relationships

created. For a mega-church like Christ Fellowship, it may be hard to conceptualize that deep relationships can form, but instead, newcomers may get lost, and even feel overwhelmed by the numbers. However, according to Pastor Dean, and reflected on Christ Fellowship’s social media site, the concept of “Welcome Home” is more than a slogan, it’s the real deal. “We build a culture of family, faith and fun. If you plant your life here, you will definitely make friendships,” Pastor Dean said, “not on a surface level but on a very deep level. I know other churches duplicate that as well. but that’s something that we focus on — loving people where they are and meeting them at the point of their need.” To connect with members on various levels, Christ Fellowship provides a variety of community initiatives and opportunities to grow those relationships. From small groups run by church volunteers centered on hobbies and personal interests including family topics, sports, and health, to missions trips to Haiti, and even Kaleo, Christ Fellowship’s School of Biblical Leadership offers an intensive ministry training program to help church members grow stronger in their faith as Christ-centered followers in preparation for ministry. But for Pastor Dean, what he’s most excited about is the opportunity to introduce people to a relationship with Christ. “We want to connect with people who are not connected anywhere, and invite them to be a part of this family. People that don’t know Christ yet can come here and engage in a relationship with Him. That’s what it’s all about.”

DECLARATION from page A10 efforts which may help address algae blooms in the long term,” he wrote. “We encourage your continued work with those agencies.” One federal agency that’s on the ground is the Small Business Administration. Spokesman Jack Kemp said the agency has set up a Business Recovery Center at the Martin County Fairgrounds, 2616 S.E. Dixie Highway, Stuart. “Any business that’s affected by this can come by and talk to us,” he said. The temporary center is opened weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The SBA is offering businesses affected by the blue-green algae bloom loans for up to $2 million that are 4 percent interest for up to 30 years. Unsecured loans are available for up to $25,000. The center approved loans for $225,000 the first two days it was open. “One critical fact is there is a deadline,” Kemp said. He added, “When people quit coming, we’ll pack our bags and leave. After we leave, people can still go online or call our customer service center.” Businesses affected by the algae bloom have until Nov. 16 to apply for the loans.

“Recovering from a disaster, it takes will,” Kemp said. “It takes a positive attitude. People need to recognize their need to recover from this and have confidence in their ability to recover from this. Businesses need to have working capital when sales are down. That’s what we provide.” At the last regular meeting of the Martin County Commission — Tuesday, July 12 — Deborah Drum, the county’s senior ecologist, reported that unexpectedly low water levels in Lake Okeechobee and the Army Corps of Engineers’ reduction in releases into the St. Lucie Canal, C-44, are good news to the Treasure Coast. The cyanobacteria in the St. Lucie and Indian rivers is a freshwater variety. “The increase in (water) salinity with the reduction in flows is helping,” Drum said at the meeting. She later added, “Anecdotally I can say, and now the science is supporting it, with reduced flows we are seeing a reductions (in cyanobacteria levels).” However, Drum said that with bacteria dying off, there can be an increase in bloom toxicity for a while. Kemp said businesses that can’t go to the recovery center can call 800-659-2955 for loan information.

Understanding the St. Lucie County Fire District Assessment Referendum

Property Tax Revenues and Calls for Assistance

On August 30, 2016 all St. Lucie County registered voters will have the opportunity to vote on an annual assessment of up to $50 per residence and other modest fees for commercial property and vacant land. The assessment will fund the District’s fire protection services, equipment, facilities and programs.

$50.00

$45.00

Why is the Fire District seeking this assessment? Currently, the District’s fire rescue services are primarily paid for through an ad valorem property tax capped at 3 mils. This funding was adequate until additional Homestead Exemptions and the Great Recession combined to dramatically decrease taxable values. When values sharply decreased, so did the funds available to pay for services. Fire District revenues fell 36% -- but calls for assistance continued to rise by an average of 4.8% each year!

What does this mean to me? As of March 2014, the owners of 10,891 properties paid nothing for fire protection because their assessed home value was less than the value of their tax exemptions; 42% of all properties in the county contributed less than $75 for the Fire District’s services. If the referendum passes, starting next year all property owners (residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and vacant land) in St. Lucie County, including those in the cities, will pay an assessment for the Fire District when they pay their property tax bill. Those rates can be found on the District’s website. For the homeowner, the assessment for each residence will be no more than $50 – less than 14 cents a day. Because this fee is not linked to the value of a home, all homeowners will share fairly and equally in this assessment and the fire protection services it supports.

What will the money be used for?

FIRE VEHICLE NEEDS

By law, the funds may only be used for fire protection services, facilities/equipment and programs. In order to maintain high levels of service with reduced revenue during the economic downturn, one of the cost-saving measures the District took was to temporarily put off purchasing replacement vehicles or making necessary capital improvements to fire stations. Maintaining a reliable fleet of vehicles is essential to providing reliable fire protection services. Over the next four years, the District must replace 27 trucks that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Another 15 rescue trucks will also be needed, but these will be purchased using other funding sources.

What else has the District done to save money? Having a single Fire District that serves the entire county allows our District to operate at a lower cost than neighboring fire departments. For instance, last year the per-resident cost for fire rescue services was about 15% lower in St. Lucie County than in neighboring counties – and the St. Lucie County Fire District handled about 2,500 more calls than Martin and Indian River counties combined. The starting pay of our firefighters is $32,000 a year versus $43,118 in Martin and $39,838 in Indian River. Between 2009-2014, our employees agreed to first postpone and then cut in half scheduled pay and cost of living increases and agreed to increase their own contributions by 2% of base pay to the pension plan, reducing taxpayer costs. The District also reduced firefighter staffing from a high of 404 in 2008 to a low of 359 in 2014.

Ultimately, if funding for the Fire District fails to cover costs, the District would have no choice but to decrease its level of service to the county’s residents, through staffing cuts and continued deferral of critical equipment purchases. In addition to jeopardizing the safety of our residents, the lack of equipment and potentially longer response times will likely negatively impact our county’s insurance rating - which can lead to an increase in homeowner and commercial fire insurance premiums, or even result in the inability to obtain fire insurance on some properties.

Page says he started the Facebook page a couple of years ago when he first heard about the game’s development. Even then, he says, he recognized what a phenomenon the game would be, and understood that some sort of structure needed to be implemented to deal with its popularity. “I knew that I wanted to be the one shaping this community for the better, with AR (augmented reality) coming into the real world. Without a doubt the obvious problems would be safety, giving us a bad name by defacing property, and overall toxicity.” Tradition isn’t the only Pokemon Go Pokestop, as they’re called. And the popularity-turned-toxicity that Page is concerned about has already been a blip on the screen for Martin County officials. Kevin Abbate, Martin County Parks & Recreation director, says the game’s popularity in Martin County has come with some problems. “You’re getting a lot of evening activity (at parks), when the Pokemon are different,” Abbate said. Recently about 100 players just showed up at night at Zeus Park, at 12044 S.E. Zeus Crescent in Hobe Sound. Neighbors didn’t like that. Then there’s Indian RiverSide Park at 1707 N.E. Indian River Drive, Jensen Beach. It closes at 11 p.m., but that didn’t stop Pokémon catchers. “We got tagged with like 50 people at one of the pavilions at (2 a.m.),” Abbate said. By the way, Abbate himself loves Pokemon Go. His 6-year-old son and he play. More importantly, Abbate said the game is getting folks visiting parks. The county is looking at ways to tap into the phenomenon. “(Sailfish Splash Water Park), since it’s a designated (Pokémon) gym, we’re thinking about giving 30 percent off if people show us their avatars,” Abbate said. Sailfish Splash is located at 931 S.E. Ruhnke St., Stuart. Abbate said the parks depart-

WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM ment is also looking at doing some kind of Pokémon afterhours event at Indian Riverside Park. So far, Abbate said, there haven’t been any problems at Palm City parks, such as Jock Leighton, 3755 S.W. Mapp Road. But — “There’s no doubt there are Pokémon out in (Palm City) parks,” he said. While the parks and rec folks put together events for Pokémon Go players, Abbate offered a tip. “We want them to have a good time in the parks and follow the rules,” he said. Carlos Mora, from Fort Pierce, drives to Tradition regularly to play the game in the field between Tradition Town Hall and the Tradition Station office building. He says aside from the nostalgia, it’s breaking down social barriers. “it’s definitely helping us — we go on walks more. We have actual conversations, people talk with other people. It’s genuine.” Some players say it’s actually life-changing for them. Before the game came on the scene, Daniel Stauch was nearly confined to his home because of mental-health issues. Suffering from PTSD and depression has kept him from a lot social interaction — until now. “I have more of an urge to interact with people, which is helping with my social anxieties,” he said. “I’m 35, so I’m roughly 10 years or so above the average player, but all these kids seem super friendly. It’s bringing people of all types together.” Stauch gives one piece of advice to people playing the game and congregating in the more popular areas across the Treasure Coast — advice that he says will do wonders for some of the players that are nervous in social situations. “If someone sees a lone player out wandering by themselves, go say hi, because they could be too nervous to do it themselves. That’d be great.” For more information on all things Pokémon including event locations and game tips, log onto www. tcpokemon.com. THE CITY BUDGET? IMAGINE A PIZZA

Confused about the budget? Most people are. You have to have a financial background to really understand all the accounts and how they all work. I’m going to try to simplify it in a way that’s easy to understand. Let’s compare it to a pizza. The size of the pizza you order depends on how many people you want to feed and how much money you have to spend. You pass the hat to collect money from your friends to buy it (taxes). The amount of people you feed are the city residents, and in the case of Port St. Lucie it’s almost 180,000. A pizza usually has 8 slices, the more people we have eating the pizza, the more slices we need, although the slices get smaller with each person that comes to the table. It’s the same with the budget. A slice for emergency services, a slice for roads, sewers, for police, and other infrastructure, a slice for clean drinking water, a slice for parks and recreation, and so on. No one likes eating the crust. The crust on our pizza, which we pay for, but reluctantly eat, is about 40% of the pie. That represents the interest on approximately $916 million of municipal debt. We created most of this debt, as all cities do, topay for roads, sewers, parks, etc. But part of that debt (about $220 million) was created due to poor investment decisions. That’s the burnt part of the crust which we throw away, just like we threw away this money. I want to shrink the crust, because we can’t afford a bigger pie. And, I don’t want to burn any of it. Linda Gausten

My uneducated Sicilian grandmother, who had nine children to feed, made pizza every Wednesday night for her family. She understood it, so why didn’t our earlier councils understand this when they made so many dumb mistakes giving us a mountain of debt? The only way to avoid a repetition of those mistakes is to hire a better chef. Someone who really knows how to make pizza. The lesson learned is simple. Step One: Pay for the pie. Expanding our tax base will do that without charging our residents more for each slice. With luck, we may be able to reduce the price (property tax decrease), or make the pie without burning the crust. I spent 3 decades learning the skills necessary to do that. Step Two:

Figure out who gets a slice. I have the skills to identify our city’s needs.

Step Three: Hire an experienced pizza chef. I have thirty-four years of the solid fiscal experience. In fact, I make one hell of a pizza – Brooklyn style!

If you want good pizza, go to a good pizzeria. If you want good fiscal management - Vote for Linda Gausten. Please visit my website: http://lindagausten.com Or my Facebook page: Elect Linda Gausten Political Advertisement Paid for and approved by Linda Gausten for City Council

The Martin County Commission gave Turner Groves Limited Partnership a contentious nod to start transforming the former Sunshine Grove on Martin Highway into a 1,700-acre development with green space. The development will get water and sewer from Port St. Lucie by pipes over the County Line Canal, C-23.

a city block away through some thick shrubs. What road could ever go there? The whole intersection is starting to make sense. On Tuesday, July 12, the Martin County Commission gave a tense 3-2 nod to a tiny project, seven acres, in Palm City that the developer — Turner Groves Limited Partnership — hopes will eventually need a bridge over the C-23 to connect Tradition to Martin Highway. Plans are to develop much of a 1,700-acre site that used to be citrus groves, the former Sunrise Grove at 11335 Martin Highway. Citrus greening wiped out the grove. The proposed project first went before the Martin Commission in 2009 with plans for 5 million square feet of industrial and research space, along with about 1 million for office and industrial. Additionally, the developer aimed for 200,000 square feet of retail space and about 500 hotel rooms. Sort of a Tradition South without the homes. Martin County is very different from Port St. Lucie. Development is opposed everywhere, but in Martin development opposition is incredibly tenacious, sophisticated and organized through

groups such as the Guardians of Martin County. Their bulwark against development is the Martin County Growth Management Plan, which was largely authored by environmental activist Maggy Hurchalla in the 1980s. It has firm rules keeping development within urban service boundaries to prevent urban sprawl. In other words, if a proposed development can’t get water — and sometimes sewer — from Stuart or the county now, it isn’t going to happen until every square inch in the urban boundary is developed. Sunrise Grove wasn’t near a Martin County water line or urban service boundary when Turner proposed building on the western side of Interstate 95. Turner proposed an amendment to the Comprehensive Growth Management Plan to allow it to create a freestanding urban service boundary under the land-use and zoning designation of Agriculture Targeted Employment Center, AgTEC. Ed Ciampi was a Martin commissioner in 2009. He’s running for the commission this year. “We said we weren’t going to run water and sewer out there, so they said they’d get it from the City of Port St. Lucie,” Ciam-

mission member and is running against Haddox this year, told the commission that water and sewer are still an issue. “(The developer’s) rights to water and sewer are not secured,” she said. “If you look in the documents, it’s an option.” Documents show Port St. Lucie has committed to supplying the water and sewer service into Martin County for the development only after all regulatory agencies approve its construction. Commissioner Anne Scott reluctantly joined commissioners Doug Smith and Haddox in approving the seven-acre development Turner hopes to be the tip of a development iceberg that’ll essentially extend Tradition’s commercial and professional corridor over the C-23 to Martin Highway in Palm City. The former judge said she approved it not because she liked the proposed development, but because the growth management plan amendment passed before she was on the commission tied her hands. “I’m going to vote for this because I have to for the good of Martin County, or you’re going to sue us,” she said. Commissioner Sarah Heard, who voted against the proposed AgTEC amendment in 2009, joined Ed Fielding in dissent.

pi said. Problem solved. Turner didn’t need county water and sewer. It’d get them from Port St. Lucie over the C-23. The 2009 commission approved the preliminary plan in a 3-2 vote. At the recent commission meeting, company representatives told the Martin Commission that it secured a preliminary Agreement for Future Water and Wastewater Services with Port St. Lucie to supply water and sewer service to the proposed development. Along with that, the company plans to eventually build a private road that’ll be open to public travel connecting Village Parkway to Martin Highway by a bridge over the C-23. Martin’s development opposition didn’t like the proposal in 2009. When the now defunct Florida Department of Community signed off on the growth management plan amendment, the Martin County Conservation Alliance and 1000 Friends of Florida took the amendment permitting the proposed development to an administrative hearing. They lost the case. Many of the same opponents showed up at the recent Martin County Commission meeting to voice opposition. Donna Melzer, who is a former Martin Com-

like that here. There is too much violence and strife in the world. The way to stop that is by getting to know each other.” Lobb noted that the Interfaith Clergy Alliance began before the events in Orlando. “We’ve always had an interfaith Thanksgiving,” she said. “This year, it was at Living Faith Church (in Tradition.) There were members of the Jewish, Christen and Muslim communities. We have worked together. You don’t start that out of nowhere. These are friendships and alliances are built over time. Eitz Chayim had (Muslim Community Coordinator) Mohammed Malik as a speaker in April. We had an Interfaith Prayer for Freedom just before Memorial Day at Faith Congregational.” Lobb said that it is important to recognize that neither suicide nor terrorism is sanctioned by the Koran. “It is not our right to take another life,” she said. “The Koran has a teaching similar to Judaism that if you kill one it as if you killed the entire world.” She said that the fissures that split the world, the nation and our communities, are all arbitrary. “Whenever we create a fissure,

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Rabbi Shafir Lobb of Congregation Eitz Chaim spoke from the heart at the Interfaith Clergy Alliance service at Tradition Town Hall following the massacre at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. it’s an artificial construct. Whole groups of anything cannot be described by any one trait. There will be violence until we are willing to face the root issue in society of ‘othering.’” Lobb also said that better mental health care and better attitudes toward mental illness

would help. “We do not have a good mechanism or social attitude toward people who need mental health care,” she said. “There are far too many people with the potential for violence without access to the help they desperately need.”

TRADITION — Tin Fish in Tradition has done it again with radical new menus and calendar items not served up anywhere else or at any other Tin Fish restaurant. In April, Tin Fish introduced its own proprietary blended tea and unique wine mixers. Now, they’ve introduced Sunday brunch. It was almost a year ago when Robert Troup acquired Tin Fish, after a long, successful career with TooJay’s, and he has been bringing much more to the culinary table. of the camera, and he was super nervous and froze. He told his parents he wanted to be more comfortable and try it again, so they agreed to enroll him in acting classes at the Green Room Acting Studio in Jupiter. They also added guitar lessons once a week at JAM studios in Port St. Lucie for extra creative measure. While in school online, Sage kept auditioning, and scored additional roles in the upcoming short films “Musician,” which recently filmed in Orlando, and another short, “Stillborn,” that he is currently filming in Miami and was featured in TV ads for solar energy and Universal Studios Florida. It appears as though Sage’s “gift” is something that works to the advantage of a child actor, since ADHD kids love people, think outside of the box, have excellent people skills, and are extremely energetic. Acting is such an amazing creative outlet for Sage and kids like him. Finally he loves school! Last year he had a solid A average and this upcoming school year, with even more auditions and callbacks, you can be sure to see more of Sage on film and in print. “Gifted” will be in theaters April 12, 2017, and “Musician” premieres in Orlando on Aug. 14. You can follow Sage and his creative adventures on Instagram at iamsage08.

TRADITION — Sage Mayer was born to be an entertainer. Always smiling and dancing, he was gregarious and alert at a very young age. When he was 3, he went to a little nursery school in Palm Beach for a few hours a day and just couldn’t or wouldn’t nap. It drove his teacher crazy. He didn’t want to miss a thing, and had too much energy to waste time napping. He was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 7, though he didn’t need an affirmation to tell him he was different. He just couldn’t understand why others didn’t enjoy what they were doing and weren’t excited about the new opportunity and joy in every single day. School was rote and boring for him, teachers felt more like robots and he was considered disruptive, causing some major headaches to his teachers. He would do anything to escape the setting of a classroom and get home to create short stories and characters, causing school administration to call his mom — a lot. Last year, as he was entering the 4th grade, Sage insisted his mom put him in school online, which she did. She also enrolled him in more creative activities such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu at Legacy Martial Arts in St Lucie West and the Boys and Girls Club, near Sportsman Park. Both were great enhancements to his school program, and little did he or his family know, these changes would be the beginning of his dream, to entertain and put smiles on the faces of people. In the fall of 2015 Sage, his mom and dad went to Savannah, Ga., after a casting director insisted on casting him in the feature film “Gifted,” starring Chris Evans of Captain America fame and directed by “The Amazing Spiderman” director Marc Webb. Sage was originally slated to perform as one of the classroom kids, but couldn’t make it the first weekend of shooting being on vacation (he missed the call,) so he was cast as a playground kid. While filming a scene, he was plucked to do a speaking scene. It was the first time he was requested to repeat a line in front

For larger appetites or to share, Create Your Own Omelet lets you choose from bacon, ham, sausage, and a variety of cheeses and served with hash brown potatoes or fruit. Chef Dale DiSarno, 30, of Port St. Lucie, a Florida Culinary Institute graduate, has been with Tin Fish for the past two years. “He’s very creative in the kitchen and makes sauces that reflect our seasonal produce,” Troup said. “That way, what we offer is always fresh.” Jeff Howze, 23, of Fort Pierce, has been with Tin Fish in Tradition for 6 years, and started

working at Tin Fish part-time busing tables and being homeschooled. Today, he is the general manager. “I try to utilize everyone’s strengths,” Troup said. “Unique talents that might not seem to translate to food service, yet provide a local touch to the restaurant’s ambiance and laidback atmosphere.” Yazmin Phillips, 19, a resident of Port St. Lucie, is a full-time Art Education major at Indian River State College who uses her art skills when creating the special menu items display. She started working at Tin Fish a year ago after being recruited by Howze. Phillips agrees with Howze, “The Beignets are my favorite.” Beignets are puffed fried donuts dusted with powdered sugar and served with various syrups and dips. Sauce pairings are seasonally influenced and have included varieties of strawberry rhubarb, citrus mango papaya puree, or pina colada all created in house by Chef DiSarno. “We come in daily at 6 a.m. every day to prepare the dough for our Beignets,” said DiSarno. “They are worth breaking your diet over. Hot and fresh, each Beignet is crispy around the edges and a warm interior.” For brunch enthusiasts who sleep in and miss brunch but still want to come for a late Sunday lunch, Howze recommends the Maui tacos. “Our fish is so fresh you can taste the freshness” Howze said. Speaking of fish, Tin Fish offers traditional eggs benedict or if you’re up for a unique twist try the Salmon Benedict. TRADITION — This weekend, you have the chance to have fun and help a little girl. Maddie Lane, who’s 9, complained of knee pain in May. She was referred to an orthopedist, who saw suspicious shadows on her scans and had her rushed to Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. A biopsy revealed multicentric osteogenic sarcoma, a rare cancer that strikes the growth plates in younger children. The cancer had spread throughout her body. Maddie has begun aggressive chemotherapy at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, Her family and doctors call the treatment “Spider Juice” because she doesn’t like the word chemo and be-

nowledge Is Power... What are some of the “secrets” to the game of golf? All of us that play this challenging, wonderful and elusive game can agree that the game of golf is full of mighty highs and at times, the low of lows. If you truly want to improve your game, it is critical that you increase your knowledge and understanding of the specific techniques of the game. Knowledge is power. The power to get better, the power to enjoy the process of learning and achieving goals, and the power to leverage your time and resources. There are “secrets” to this great game. Here are a few “secrets” to hopefully whet your appetite and encourage you to want to get better: 1. There is a more efficient way of using your club and body in striking the golf ball. We are all under the laws of force and motion. It is scientific. 2. Pressure/speed causes the ball to travel long distances. You must understand how to create pressure/speed in the golf swing. 3. MADDIE from page B7 cause Maddie is a big fan of Spiderman. They are also looking for new therapies. Friends and family have formed Team Maddie, whose goal is to raise awareness and money for children’s cancers and fund new treatments and cues On July 23, “Maddie’s Festival’ will take place in Tradition Town Square from noon- 8 p.m. There will be food, vendors, a Kid Zone, live entertainment and lots of fun to help raise money for Maddie’s fight. Karen Vitale, a family friend who is helping to organize the festival, said there will be different events throughout the day, including a bounce house, water slide, petting zoo and snow in July. There will also be classic cars. There will be food trucks and food vendors, a stage with three live bands and a DJ and vendors with a variety of crafts. If all of that were not enough for the busy day, there are more than 20 raffle prizes and a silent auction for items like bicycles and Disney passes. While the focus is on fun, it’s more important to remember that the money raised is going to a worthy cause. Maddie’s uncle Jack has set up a Go-

FundMe account whose goal is to raise $100,000. They have raised more than $66,000 in two months. Vitale is looking forward to the day, to celebrating Maddie, “There are a lot of things going on,” she said, “It’s going to be a busy day, a great day. It’s amazing to see how everyone has come together for her.” Maddie is captain of her school’s cheerleading squad and has always cheered others on. PATCHES from page B6 Servicing the tri-county area, some parents drive as far as Indian River County. Although Medicare does provide transportation services, their help is limited within the county lines. As the only nonprofit PPEC agency in the area, the organization accepts anyone who needs the care regardless of his or her ability to pay. Individuals who lack insurance, are in the process of obtaining insurance, or have a lapse of insurance, are still eligible to receive care if there’s a qualifying diagnosis in place. Diapers and food are also provided for parents who need the extra assistance. “Our goal,” says Steward, “is to help families and make all children, all holidays, and all times special.” A goal, that became challenged when just days before Christmas, toys intended to be distributed to PATCHES PPEC children were stolen. When Councilman Ron Bowen and the City of Port St. Lucie employees discovered what happened, they replaced the missing toys within hours. Now, every year during the summer, the City of Port St. Lucie collects toy and monetary donations at various locations in the community for PATCHES PPEC. This year’s 4th annual toy drive ends July 25, so there’s still time to bring a new unwrapped toy, or a

tax deductible donation payable to PATCHES. The staff checks all toys to ensure that each child receives a toy that is specifically suitable for his or her safety needs. “Sometimes people question where the toys are going and it’s not specific to one location or one cause. This is particular, it’s going to one place, one purpose and at a time when it’s not the norm so the children can celebrate throughout the course of the year,” says Kristina Ciuperger, communications director for the City of Port St. Lucie. Once the toys are collected, children receive specially wrapped presents during a summer Christmas party. Port St. Lucie law enforcement officers join in the festivities and help Santa deliver his packages with sirens and flashing lights. A celebration that gives each child a special moment to remember amidst a day that ordinarily involves medical treatments, therapies, and nurse-assisted feedings. “Children who won’t be able to celebrate with us in the fall or December, will get to have Santa Claus this summer,” says Steward. Toys can be dropped off at the following St. Lucie West locations: Starbucks St. Lucie West 1789 NW St. Lucie West Blvd., Port St. Lucie and Butterfield Pharmacy 1707 NW Saint Lucie West Blvd, Port St. Lucie. For additional information about PATCHES PPEC and any of their services visit PATCHESPPEC.org.

There is No Need to Fear Losing Your Independence… A Walk-In Tub May Be the Key to Your Freedom

What Do Seniors Fear the Most?

When the EAR Foundation and Clarity released their study called “Aging in Place in America”, the findings were quite striking. The study was aimed at examining the attitudes and anxieties of the nation’s elderly population. What the study came to find was that seniors are fearful of having to leave their homes. In fact, losing their independence is a larger fear than dying. This fear stems from a loss of connection to the home and environment that they have built over their life. It is clear that moving into a nursing home could have the detrimental effect of creating a greater distance between them and their loved ones, including children, other family, and friends. The study found that 89% of seniors want to age in place, or grow older without having to move from their homes, and more than half are scared with their ability to take care of themselves at home.

Baby Boomers Are Worried for Their Parents!

The study also found that Baby Boomer children of elders could end up feeling helpless when faced with the choice of moving their parents out of home. The study found that 82% of the children fear their parents will be mistreated in a nursing home and 89% fear their parents will end up becoming depressed. It is obvious that seniors and their families are determined to have them remaining to live at home. So what is standing in the way?

Falling Is a Huge Fear for Aging Seniors…

There is one place in the house that tends to be the most dangerous to fall prone seniors, the bathroom. Modern bathrooms, with high toilets and bathtub walls can pose a significant issue to seniors with mobility issues. Luckily there are options to help prevent these serious issues, and therefore prevent the falls that eventually lead seniors to have to leave their house. A walk-in bathtub is that solution.

There Is An Easier Way

Walk-In tubs are one of the safest solutions to the issue of having to climb into and sit down in a normal “floor-height” tub. The convenience is un precedented. There are many types of walkin bathtubs on the market right now and it is very important that you pick one to suit all of your needs. The last thing you want to do is pay a contractor to come to your house and see your bathroom, just to tell you that your new tub won’t fit!

The fear of falling can be an all-too-real reality for some seniors. And once you’ve fallen once, your chances of it happening again greatly increases. The causes of senior falls and the injuries that happen from them can range from health problems to environmental factors. *http://www.marketingcharts.com/demographics-and-audiences/boomers-and-older/ seniors-fear-loss-of-independence-nursing-homes-more-than-death-2343/
