“Colorblocks,” by Sarasota artist Debbie Dannheisser, is part of her “Color By Design” exhibit on display in April, at Elizabeth Stevens Gallery. See page 51 for more information. “Art is an expression of my feelings. It is a metaphor for life. It is important to me to just let things flow in life. When I paint, I feel this flow. “‘Colorblocks,’ with its quick brush strokes, is an expression of fluidity and freedom. The color red feels strong and bold. The squares represent the structure that I also need in my life. This painting is inspired by my need to express fluidity, freedom, boldness and structure. I am fortunate to have the gift of art and to be able to use this gift to contribute. I feel it is very important that we use our gifts to make a difference in our community and to help our children and families.” — Debbie Dannheisser

What are your audience pet peeves? “In the beginning of my tenure, Victor DeRenzi and I sat through a performance in one of the boxes in the back of the Opera House. There was a box next to us with four ladies making a great deal of commotion. When the noise reached a fever pitch, we had to check it out. Basically, they spread out an entire feast, almost like a picnic with a checkered tablecloth. They were about to pop open a bottle of champagne, when Victor and I had to say, ‘You can’t do that.’ One of the women replied ‘Why not?’ It was the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen.” — Susan Danis, executive director of Sarasota Opera

What are your audience pet peeves? “When a viewer tells me, unsolicited, what I am doing wrong, how I should have done it and how to re-do it. Sometimes they have a point. Sometimes they are deadly off the mark. Over the years, I have learned not to scream, cry or defend the work. I just say, ‘I’ll think about it and thank for your input.’” — Pat Kaufman, artist, author and playwright

“I remember when I was a kid, traveling to Washington, D.C., we had to take the subway to get from the train. These subway trains were unlike any other. They were completely covered from floor-to-ceiling with graffiti. I sat in my seat with my mouth open the whole ride looking in every direction at the colors, patterns and images. When we exited the train, I began noticing all the colors. Every train seemed to have something different. I felt like I was taking a ride in a painting.” — Steven Strenk, artist and member of s/ART/q

What are your audience pet peeves? “I’m proud to say that this doesn’t happen too often in Sarasota: Audiences at orchestra concerts have a tendency to clap between movements. In a concert situation when there’s a big silence, people don’t know what to do, so they clap even though we’re going on to the next movement. Of course, when there’s clapping we know they enjoy it, but it’s distracting. It’s like ‘Yeah, yeah, we like it too, now let us move on.’” — Michelle Giglio, singer

What was your most memorable artistic experience? “When I first sang with the Sarasota Orchestra at Bea Friedman’s 90th birthday. I had never sang with an orchestra before and I was super nervous, which doesn’t happen often. I had a wonderful time. I’ll never forget how nice the musicians and conductor Andrew Lane were.
