Jaymie decorated her new cast, which she has to wear for about six more weeks, with this riding boot design.

+ Gettel honors teachers Manatee County teachers were honored Oct. 10, during the Teacher Appreciation Awards ceremony held at Gettel Toyota of Lakewood, off State Road 64, in the East County.

Fifty-three teachers each were presented with $125 for the first quarter of the school year. Gettel will continue to do this at every school each quarter, said Mary Glass, executive director of the Manatee Education Foundation.

MANATEE COUNTY — Few things, if any, could draw David Gayler from the embrace and smiling face of his 22-month-old daughter, Jo Jo. But the former superintendent of Charlotte County Schools, who earned a reputation for the calmness and skill with which he led the district through the aftermath of Hurricane Charley, found one.

Monday, Oct. 15, he officially started as Manatee County Schools’ new

interim superintendent.

Gayler said his experience in Manatee County, while serving as an assistant superintendent for 10 months in 2001 under then-superintendent Dan Nolan, was the main reason he agreed to temporarily leave retirement behind. Gayler also relishes a challenge and knew the School Board was facing serious budgetary and community-relation problems, among other issues, he

said.

“Professionally, it was easy to come back to a district I loved working for,” Gayler said. “Personally, it was hard (because I’m so close with my family).”

But after speaking with his wife, Winnie, Gayler agreed to come on board. He wouldn’t have taken the position for any other county, he said.

Officials broke ground Oct. 15, on The Mall at University Town Center.

EAST COUNTY — For East County resident Sally Schule, Monday afternoon was a bit like being at the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games.

As she stood on a bare patch of land just west of Cattlemen Road, watching dump trucks and bulldozers pushing earth far in the background, Schule, general manager of Southgate Mall’s Saks Fifth Avenue, turned her attention to the shovels and dirt just a few yards away.

Almost exactly two years from this day, she will see a vision fulfilled — the opening of The Mall at University Town Center, where her Saks store will be one of three anchor tenants.

Elected officials, community members and business representatives joined officials from Taubman Centers and Benderson Development Oct. 15, as they gathered to formally break ground on The Mall at University Town Center, a mega-mall project that will bring a regional shopping destination to the East County.

“This is an exciting time for customers and our associates,” said Schule. “We have been talking about expanding for several years. Of course, we cannot wait. Two years will fly so quickly. I like to look at it by the number of weeks. It’s really only 104 weeks.”

way, The Mall at University Town Center will be an 880,000-squarefoot, state-of-the-art, two-level enclosed mall. The $315 million project is slated to open at 10 a.m.

Oct. 16, 2014, and include more than 100 specialty stores and restaurants, of which at least 50% will be new to the area.

Saks, which will be doubling in size when it moves from its current Southgate Mall location to University Town Center, will be expanding its designer offerings and opening a men’s department as part of the change, Schule said.

Other anchor tenants include Dillard’s and Macy’s, which will have 180,000- and 160,000-square-foot stores, respectively. No other tenants have been announced at this time.

Bill Taubman, chief operating officer for Taubman Centers, said the mall will have an open design with plenty of light and will utilize the best technologies to make it more efficient than any of its other mall destinations.

“I promise you’re not going to be disappointed,” he said. “(This mall will) represent the future of shopping.”

Taubman said his company has been looking at the site for more than eight years and was pleased to be chosen by Benderson Development to partner in development of the project. Although Benderson is doing initial site preparation work, Taubman will be managing construction of the mall, as well as leasing for it.

Additional tenants, Taubman said, will be announced closer to the mall’s opening, likely at three intervals — at one year, six months and one month from opening.

“I was part of a district that was really moving in the right direction,” Gayler said of his time in Manatee.

“I had wanted to go back to Charlotte and make changes (there, and I did for about nine years before I retired), but I never forgot the way Manatee County treated me and the way this school district offered me (a chance to help) them and gave me some good experience.”

Gayler has set three priorities for his time leading the Manatee County School District: establishing better communication and relationships between the superintendent and School Board members and community; evaluating the district’s finances; and helping to facilitate the selection of a superintendent.

“I have to believe the board and staff and the community at large want to move in the right direction,” Gayler said. “They’ve indicated that to me. Now, we have to (work hard).

Gayler, at his induction ceremony Monday, asked the board for an honest and candid conversation about the issues the district is facing and the board’s educational priorities.

Setting a new vision and pathway for the district will be one of Gayler’s top priorities moving forward. Gayler said he will review the district’s opportunities for professional development for teachers and paraprofessionals, because ongoing

PUBLIC INPUT The Manatee County School Board has hosted three public hearings to solicit feedback from the public about what it would like to see in the next superintendent. The first meeting was held Oct. 11, at Braden River High School.

Additional meetings were held Oct. 15 and Oct. 16.

Wayne Blanton, of the Florida School Boards Association, is slated to meet with School Board members Oct. 22, to disucss public hearing results and other information concerning the search for a permanent superintendent. teacher training can have direct impact on student performance.

Gayler said he will not interfere with an audit of the district’s finances but hopes to review budget information to see if he can identify any potential savings or dollars for the classrooms, among other objectives.

He also will help facilitate the district’s superintendent search process and noted the best candidates will pounce on the opportunity to start at the district on or near April 1, because they will have the opportunity to influence next year’s budget process.

STRIDES AGAINST CANCER

East County walkers take steps to fight breast cancer EAST COUNTY — Maureen LaTessa knew her family history.

And it saved her life.

At 52 years old, she is now cancerfree, after discovering a cancerous lump in her left breast in May 2008 and having a double mastectomy.

“I caught my cancer early because my mom is a breast-cancer survivor,” said LaTessa, membership director at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club.

“She was diagnosed 17 years ago, and she’s battling it again. My grandmother died of (breast cancer).”

LaTessa will join thousands of Sarasota/Bradenton residents Oct. 20, for the American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk, at the Sarasota Polo Club, 8201 Polo Club Lane, Lakewood Ranch. The walk starts at 9 a.m.; registration starts at 7:30 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to carpool to the event.

The event also will be an enrollment site for a cancer study. (See related sidebar.) “(A breast-cancer diagnosis) is not a death sentence,” LaTessa said. “There’s hope. There are wonderful advances they’ve made. The goal is to raise enough money to find a cure.”

LaTessa said she’s been familiar with the American Cancer Society for years because of her mother’s health. She and her family used the organization’s Road to Recovery program, which provides cancer patients transportation to chemotherapy treatments and other appointments, as needed. However, she was not aware of all the programs it offered until attended a Making Strides kickoff party in May. Development of the cancer-blocking drug, Tamoxfin, that helped keep LaTessa’s cancer in remission for eight years, was funded through the American Cancer Society.

“I knew about portions of what the American Cancer Society had to offer,” LaTessa said. “Once I was in that room — it really opened my eyes.

“I didn’t want anybody to know (about my breast cancer) when it happened,” she said. “I didn’t want them to feel sorry for me or to answer questions.

I felt like it was a private thing. After that lunch, though, I thought, ‘My God, stop taking yourself so (seriously).’”

Knowing her family’s medical history, LaTessa began getting mammograms when she was 40 years old. She discovered the lump during a self-breast exam when she was 48. After getting opinions from two doctors and learning she had calcifications in her right breast, LaTessa decided to have a double mastectomy operation, rather than treating her left breast only with a lumpectomy and

“I really didn’t want to take any chances,” LaTessa said. “This was the youngest I was ever going to be. I didn’t want to treat one side and then a year later, go down the road and be in the same (situation).”

“It’s a very personal choice,” she said.

“That decision (to have both breasts removed), I’m convinced has saved my life, with my mother and grandmother (both having had breast cancer). It all opened my eyes to exercise, eating healthy and having a good attitude.”

LaTessa said she sees the Making Strides event as a way she can support and encourage other breast-cancer patients, while raising funds and awareness to fight cancer.

Making Strides site for cancer study enrollment This year’s local Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event also will serve as an enrollment site for the American Cancer Society’s newest cancer study, called Cancer Prevention Study 3.

Enrollment will run on site from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. To participate, individuals must be between the ages of 30 and 65 and must not have had cancer, other than basal- orsquamous-cell cancers, which are skin cancers.

At a designated tent at the event, participants will complete a brief survey, provide physical measurements and give a small blood sample. The process will take about 30 minutes, said Cynthia Dunlap, area executive director for the American Cancer

Society.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help prevent cancer,” Dunlap said.

“It’s a very serious commitment, but it’s not a time-consuming commitment.”

Study participants will be mailed a survey to complete every two to three years. The survey will take about 30 minutes to complete.

Dunlap said the ACS needs to have a minimum of 300,000 participants for the study by Dec. 31, 2013.

“We’re about halfway there, and we’ve been enrolling people for several years now,” she said. “It is a priority for the organization to achieve this enrollment number. No one (besides the ACS) is prepared to do this type of study. It’s us or no one, and we want to

make sure we are able to continue this study, which is critically important.”

Participants of the CPS 3 study must enroll at enrollment sites; the ACS will partner with Sarasota Memorial Hospital to offer two community-enrollment sites at which individuals can enroll over three days in February.

Dunlap said the ACS’s original cancer study, called CPS 1, showed a link between tobacco use and lung-cancer deaths. It also showed a correlation between obesity and overall survival.

A second study, CPS 2, started in 1982 and is still active, but participants are getting too old to paricipate.

The study is being continued as CPS 3 to better account for changes in lifestyles, medication and other factors, Dunlap said.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Lakewood Ranch’s farmers markets are heading in different directions next month.

Lakewood Ranch Main Street’s annual farmers market, usually held Saturdays from November through April, will not re-open for the winter season as expected.

The farmers market across Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, in San Marco Plaza, however, will remain in business each Friday morning. The market, which currently has about 30 regular vendors, will continue running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays, at the plaza, 8215 Natures Way, Lakewood Ranch.

Lakewood Ranch Main Street Property Manager Julia DeCastro said the farmers market on Main Street will not open next month because of a lack of sponsorship, vendors and public attendance.

“It’s not something we want to walk way from,” DeCastro said. “Hopefully, next year we can re-look at it. (We really need the) community to support the local stores here for them to survive and be successful.”

DeCastro said for the last three years she has had trouble securing sponsorships for the event, which sold only food-related products such as honey, fresh salsa and other items.

Seasonal costs associated with marketing, paying a market manager and other expenses totaled between $9,000 and $12,000, she said.

Additionally, the market was competing directly for both customers and vendors with the Sarasota Farmers Market in downtown Sarasota, which was established in 1979.

Organizers of the farmers market in San Marco Plaza say they need continued community support for the market to remain viable, as well, but they are eagerly pushing forward into the busier winter season.

The market this month expanded its hours slightly, remaining open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Fridays; currently, about 30 vendors are on site each week. Offerings include everything from fresh produce and baked goods to herbs, handcrafts, candles and other products.

The Humane Society of Lakewood Ranch and Safe Haven Animal Rescue also have animals on site for adoption, and there is live music for the duration of the event.

Market Manager Melissa Enders said she hopes to have 50 vendors, including ones for free-range eggs and beef, on site by December.

“We’re just going to get bigger and better,” Enders said. “We’ve pushed through the summer, but we need the support of the community. We need more people to come.”

Enders said market vendors pay $100 per month for their space, and she eventually hopes to secure sponsorships so the venue can do more marketing and charitable events.

Audit Committee Vice Chairman Lynn Lineman presented to the School Board the recommendation to contract with Navigant for auditing services.

The company, she said, likely will take a phased approach to the audit, and it plans to review the School Board’s budgets from at least the last two years.

“It will be a full forensic review — a full forensic investigation of books and records,” she said.

School Board members agreed in midSeptember to have an external forensic audited conducted on the district’s budget, after Manatee County Schools’ former superintendent, Tim McGonegal, resigned suddenly Sept. 10 — three days after revealing the district was facing a $3.4 million deficit because of accounting errors.

MANATEE COUNTY — The Manatee County School Board will hire a national consulting firm to conduct a forensic audit of the district’s finances.

School Board members voted unanimously Monday, Oct. 15, to engage with Navigant, a specialized global-expert services firm, for auditing services. Trenam Kemter, the law firm the School Board has hired to oversee the auditing process, will retain the company on behalf of the board.

A representative of the school district’s audit committee, comprised of three citizen members and two board members, brought forward the recommendation.

“I’m excited about the selection,” said Lynn Lineman, vice chairman of and business representative on the audit committee. “I think they’re a fantastic (company). They will have an overall view of … whatever broke down. It’s not enough to come in and audit the numbers. They need to know what took place. I think they are well-equipped (for this task).”

School Board member Karen Carpenter, one of the School Board representatives on the audit committee, said she liked Navigant’s experience, as well.

“They’ve done this before, and they’re not connected to anyone here in Manatee County,” she said, noting the district is working hard to ensure the audit is conducted independently and without influence of the School Board.

Brigid Merenda, of Trenam Kemker, said Navigant is ready to start work as soon as an engagement letter is received.

+ Rodeo to benefit cancer research Lakewood Ranch High School students will rally behind one of their teachers Oct. 20, at Circle S Ranch’s “Tough Enough for Pink” rodeo.

Lakewood’s chapter of Future Health Professionals, better known as HOSA, will run concessions at the rodeo to raise funds for biology teacher Paul Bourbeau, who is ill and has not been able to work since last March. He had surgery Oct. 5, and Bourbeau the students wanted to help raise money to assist his family with medical bills and other needs.

“One of the goals of HOSA is to inspire kids to have compassion for helping others,” said HOSA adviser Maria Whalen. “That’s a really important quality, I think, of good health-care professionals.”

In honor of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the rodeo will donate a portion of its proceeds to the fight against breast cancer.

The political buzz today, of course, is all about the presidential debate. Rightfully so.

The course of America, if not the world, is at stake.

And so is your individual liberty.

When you think through the existing conditions in America today and the consequences of this election, at the national level, it may indeed determine the outcome of what has been a long-running — but more intense over these past four years — War on Individual Liberty.

It’s simple: When the rulers burden you and your future generations with $16 trillion in national debt (and growing), this is a tightening noose around the neck of freedom. It cuts off the oxygen to your abilities to pursue your happiness. You (we) become slaves to the burdens sanctioned by government.

This War on Individual Liberty is not just

at the national level. The roots of it begin here at home, in our neighborhoods, our schools, city and county commissions and at the state Capitol. We set and establish our values here at the local level.

And that’s why our votes in local elections are no less important than the ones we cast for president and vice president.

Over the past few weeks, we have interviewed and questioned local candidates, especially those we didn’t know, to learn more about their thinking, beliefs and goals for public office. Some we have watched and tracked over the years; we know their predilections. But just as you want to know what you’re buying at the supermarket, you also want to know what you’re choosing in the voting booth.

With virtually no exception, the candidates running for office in Manatee and Sarasota counties are good, earnest, civic-minded people. Almost to a person, they are running for office, not for a job, but because they are compelled by an inner drive to want to make a difference, to influence the direction of public policy to fit their vision of what would be better than exists today. Consider a few examples: • Some say Keith Fitzgerald, who is opposing Congressman Vern Buchanan, and Dr. Robert McCann, who is seeking to unseat Rep. Greg Steube, are running out of frustration with the way things are.

To paraphrase Fitzgerald, everyone has a choice: He either can sit on the sidelines and bellyache about conditions, or he can try to do something about them. Fitzgerald chooses the latter.

• You have to admire R.B. “Chips” Shore.

He has served as Manatee County Clerk of the Courts since his first election in 1976 — 36 years. And in that time, he has made the Manatee clerk’s office one of the most — if not the most — technologically advanced and therefore one of the most cost-efficient clerk’s office in the nation. His office’s

Asked what his vision for the clerk’s office would be if he were re-elected again, Shore says: “To be the best clerk’s office in the state, and to lead the nation in court innovation, which we are doing now and will continue to do.” He loves what he does.

• When we asked the Rev. Charles Williams, first-time Democratic Party candidate for Manatee Supervisor of Elections, why he’s running for that particular office, he told us he felt a passion and an inner voice that kept pushing him to do it. “I tried to ignore it, but it kept coming back,” Williams told us. It’s a calling.

• When you meet Larry Bustle, running for re-election to the Manatee County Commission District 1 seat, talk about humble. This 77-year-old native of Samoset is a classic American hero.

138 combat missions in Vietnam for the Air Force, the last 68 of them over North Vietnam. On his last flight, the enemy shot his jet down. He ejected into the sea, breaking both shoulders and knees on impact. Forty years later, Bustle still feels the calling for public service.

We’re lucky here, to have candidates who appear to be motivated for the right reasons. What we all hope is that, like Shore, Bustle and others, they remember this fundamental fact: They work for you.

If you’re undecided about some of the candidates, perhaps their answers to the questions we posed will help. Or consider our observations and recommendations on a selection of races we perceive to be among the more competitive affecting Manatee and Sarasota counties:

County Commission, District 5 Vanessa Baugh-James Golden

These two candidates — Democrat James Golden and Republican Vanessa Baugh — have notably different philosophical

perspectives on the role of government and on experience in the political arena.

Let’s take them in reverse. Golden, 64, is a veteran of Manatee/Bradenton politics, having been elected to two four-year terms on the Bradenton City Council.

Baugh, 54, is hoping to be elected for the first time to public office.

Baugh has owned and operated an East Manatee retail jewelry business for the past 13 years; she’s wired to make decisions on financial and economic facts.

Golden is a longtime Manatee lawyer and ordained Methodist minister. He’s smart; he started college at age Baugh 14. He credits much of his education to having access to government subsidies.

Put the two of them side by side, and here’s what you would see: experience and wisdom (Golden) versus (political) inexperience and business instincts (Baugh). Here’s something else: With Golden, the Manatee County Commission would have one Democrat among the seven commissioners. With Baugh, seven Republicans.

Golden says his different point of view would be valuable to Manatee taxpayers.

One size does not fit all, he notes.

Baugh says she may be Republican, but she doesn’t always agree with Republicans. “The County Commission should be non-partisan,” she says. “Get the politics out of it.”

Truth is, Manatee taxpayers will not lose with either of these candidates. But at the core of our values is an unbending preference for candidates whose foundations are cemented in strictly limited government. On that score, Baugh has the edge.

Recommendation: Baugh.

Manatee School Board

Dave “Watchdog” Miner-Robert Moates

For those who know these two candidates, this race is the most difficult choice on the ballot.

Each is competent and qualified to serve Manatee taxpayers well on the troubled Manatee County School Board.

If it were only possible, they both should be elected. Whoever loses should run again. The Manatee School Board needs Minor and Moates.

Of course, saying all that doesn’t help voters decide which candidate is better.

Let’s start with Moates. He’s “the local

Moates gets it.

But it’s not his time — yet.

In this election, at this crucial time, when the Manatee School Board needs triage and leadership, now is the time for longtime candidate Dave “Watchdog” Miner. This is his time.

It’s probably pretty safe to say there is not one non-elected public figure in Manatee County civics with more name recognition than “Watchdog” Miner, 66.

For more two decades, that’s what he has done — served as a volunteer, unelected, interested citizen in “watchdogging” the Manatee School Board, in addition to practicing law and volunteering the community.

Over the years, some of his critics have characterized him as something of a gadfly, but over time, more and more Manatee residents have recognized that Miner knows of what he speaks. It would be difficult to find anyone in the county who knows more about Manatee public school system financing, budgeting and operations than does Miner.

And while some residents may think Miner is a “one-trick” zealot, please take a look at our Voter Guide and read the entry on Miner. Asked what attributes he would bring to the school board, Miner listed 15.

Here are nine. As he wrote: “I am the only candidate who: “1) Has experience in hiring a chief operating officer of an organization; “2) Has experience hiring legal counsel; “3) Is a long-time (more than 12 years) challenger of the school board on FCAT, transparency, wasteful spending, fairness to employees and other issues; “4) For decades has successfully worked on community boards, making organizations better; “5) Is a leader in establishing Manatee County’s first child-abuse prevention program and creating METV; “6) Possesses many years of services as a Big Brother in the Big Brothers program; “7) Is a proud veteran (Marine Vietnam veteran); “8) Has been a successful business owner for more than 34 years; “9) Has authored assessment reform legislation and served as a witness for the Senate Education Committee.”

Manatee residents, parents with children in Manatee public schools and taxpayers are well aware of the crisis in (lack of) confidence in the county’s public school system. It faces a huge challenge in finding the right superintendent to lead it and turn it around, and it needs, more than ever, smart, tough board members who are willing to make the

boy makes good.” A native of Manatee, Moates relates this “fun fact” about himself: He has spent about 15 of his 40 years of life in a portable classroom — at Oneco Elementary School in the fifth grade; at Manatee High School as a student; and for the past 10 years as an economics and advanced-placement American government teacher at Lakewood Ranch High School.

That, of course, is not what qualifies him for the school board. He has other impressive Miner credentials for that.

He has policy and political experience. Prior to becoming a teacher, Moates worked as an analyst on the Rules, Ethics and Elections Committee and chief aide to House members in the Legislature in Tallahassee. He also worked as an aide to former Congressman Dan Miller. Moates was on Miller’s staff at the time of 9/11, when Congressman Miller accompanied George W. Bush on his trip to Sarasota.

With this experience — politics, policy and as a teacher — Moates would bring a relevant perspective. He says the board needs to set the vision for the school system, but that “we must free our schools and teachers to do what is best for our students and stop the administration and departments from trying to micromanage every class.”

Larry Bustle-CorieHolmes

Incumbent Republican Larry Bustle is the epitome of steadiness and reason.

While he never expected as a young cadet to be a longtime public servant (seven years as mayor of Palmetto, four on the County Commission), he has become as competent as politician as he was as an Air Force combat pilot.

His opponent, 35-year-old Corie Holmes of Palmetto, deserves kudos for stepping up and getting involved in the political process. He should stay involved.

Unfortunately, at this time, he cannot measure up to the wisdom of Bustle.

Recommendation: Bustle

Supervisor of Elections

Mike Bennett-Charles Williams

This race is another mismatch of experience — retiring state Sen. Mike Bennett versus the Rev. Williams.

Williams, 49, a Bradenton native, is a former manager at the boat makers, Wellcraft, Donzi and Chris Craft. But deciding to use his bachelor’s degree in theology from Emmaus Baptist College, the Rev. Williams founded the King of Kings Baptist Church.

We couldn’t help but appreciate his earnestness when he told us he felt a calling to run for public office. As a minister, he obviously has the urge to serve. And kudos to him as well for getting involved.

But longtime Manatee residents also know they have a solid, trustworthy candidate for this office in Bennett.

To be sure, it caught many people by surprise when he decided to run for this position. It’s not exactly in the thick of political action and policy making, as he was when he was Senate President Protem in Tallahassee.

Bennett easily could have bowed out of public, political life and gone back to being a businessman after reaching his term limit in the Florida Senate. Or he could have reached for the next step on the political ladder. What he found, after eight years in Tallahassee, was he missed the local level.

Manatee voters should be confident that Bennett will be as competent as supervisor of election as his predecessor, Bob Sweat. Recommendation: Bennett

Oct. 8 Nigerian scam 6:05 p.m. — 6600 block of 93rd St. E. Information Only. A man reported that his company wired $22,000 to Nigeria, thinking that a credit card number was good, and later learned that the number was invalid.

Oct. 9 Following their lead 4:05 p.m. — 8300 block of Lockwood Ridge Road. Information Only. A couple reported that a man they didn’t know followed them throughout a store while they shopped and followed them to their vehicle but never spoke to them.

Senior David Marvel knew nothing about crosscountry when he joined the Seminoles crosscountry team as a freshman. Now four years later, Marvel has cut his time in half and is Southeast’s team captain and top runner.

BRADENTON — It was all David Marvel could do to finish.

The then-Southeast-High freshman was in the middle of his first 5K, and all he could think about was making his way to the finish line.

Marvel knew nothing about cross country when he joined the Southeast High cross-country team four years ago. But, in the middle of the 2009 Canes Classic, Marvel, who had only been through a handful of cross-country practices, realized just how difficult his newfound sport could be.

“I just wanted to run,” Marvel says. “I never knew anything about cross country. I (quickly) found out that the practices are hard. That first practice I think I ran a mile. It was extremely hard and tiring.”

Marvel ultimately finished his first 5K, crossing the finish line it 35:29.08, but at the time, he wasn’t quite sure the sport was for him.

He thought about quitting cross country at the end of his freshman year, but decided to stick with the sport after attending a cross-country summer camp at Appalachian State University, in North Carolina.

“I just didn’t feel like quitting,” Marvel says.

From that point on, Marvel set individual goals for himself, including making the Seminoles varsity squad and steadily lowering his time.

Now four years later, Marvel, who is the Seminoles team captain and top runner, has dropped more than 18 minutes off of his original time.

After finishing sixth in his age group at this year’s Canes Classic, Marvel achieved his first goal of the season Sept. 29, at the Seffner Christian Invitational when he broke Southeast’s previous school record of 17:48. Marvel crossed the finish line in 17:46.62, breaking the school record by nearly two seconds.

Wilson sets passing mark ODA senior quarterback Evan Wilson surpassed 5,000 passing yards for his career while leading the Thunder to a 27-14 non-district win Oct. 12.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Evan Wilson knows he has a plethora of offensive weapons around him every time he breaks out of the huddle.

The Out-of-Door Academy senior quarterback has been fortunate enough to spend the past three-anda-half years lining up alongside a host of talented wide receivers.

But, what many people outside the Thunder locker room don’t realize is just how special a talent Wilson is in his own right.

However, those who were in attendance during ODA’s non-district game against the Imagine School of North Port Oct. 12 might have a better idea after watching Wilson surpass the 5,000-yard mark for his career.

“It definitely feels good to be recognized for reaching a new milestone,” Wilson says. “I’m very thankful that I have had the opportunity to play in a pass-heavy offense for the last three seasons; and I’ve been surrounded by a lot of talent at the receiver position, which has made my job very easy.”

MARVEL / FROM PAGE 15A Marvel followed up his record-setting performance with a fourth-place finish at the Don Bishop Invitational Oct. 6, crossing the finish line in 17:27 and dropping nearly 20 more seconds of his personal best time.

“I cut my times in half from freshman year,” Marvel says. “It took a good mindset and a lot of dedication.”

Marvel has three meets remaining before the Class 2A-District 10 crosscountry meet Nov. 2, where he has his sights set on winning a district championship.

Marvel and the rest of the Seminoles advanced to the Class 2A-Region 3 meet last season for the first time in 14 years, when Marvel placed seventh individually. Marvel is seeking a return to the regional meet again this season and, hopefully, become Southeast’s first male cross-country runner to ad-

vance to the state meet.

“It’d prove that I have the drive to make it,” Marvel says. “I can do anything I put my mind to.”

In addition to running cross country, Marvel also serves as the commander for the Southeast drill team and plans to run track for the first time this spring. Marvel also spends time working with his dad as a home inspector. Marvel became the youngest state-licensed home inspector when he received his home inspector’s license in March 2010 at the age of 15.

Marvel, who received the captain’s award and was named the Seminoles’ Most Valuable Runner last fall, has aspirations of running cross country at the University of North Florida, while earning a degree in athletic training or exercise science in hopes of becoming a physical therapist.

tice that there is another quarterback in Manatee and Sarasota counties.”

After spending a year-and-a-half as a backup, Wilson took over the reins in the fifth game of his sophomore season against Bradenton Christian and hasn’t looked back since. Wilson has thrown for more than 1,550 yards this season.

“I give a lot of credit to coach (Brett) Timmons for the confidence that he has shown in me over the last four years,” Wilson says. “Even as a freshman and sophomore getting playing time as a backup, he never limited the playbook. It allowed me to mature as a quarterback and gain confidence in myself.”

This season, Wilson has developed a unique chemistry with junior wide receiver Drew Fineberg, who surpassed the 500-yard receiving mark in the Thunder’s victory over the Sharks.

Fineberg, who underwent ACL surgery last fall, caught five passes for 118 yards.

“Since Drew was a freshman, we all knew he would grow into a huge asset to our team,” Wilson says. “He’s had injuries that have held him back in the past, but this year he has stayed healthy and has become a great playmaker. He runs great routes, and he is dangerous for defenses when he has the ball in his hands.”

Timmons agreed.

“He’s been coming on as of late,” Timmons says. “I think he’s finally hitting his stride. He’s a potent weapon. Once he gets the ball, he’s dangerous in the field.

He and Evan are developing a special connection.”

ODA (3-3) took a 7-0 lead on a 5-yard touchdown run by J.T. Fischer with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter.

The Thunder extended its lead with 8:46 remaining in the second quarter, when Wilson connected with Austin Hoppe for a 37-yard strike.

Wilson found the end zone again on a 21-yard scramble with 8:01 left in the third quarter to give the host Thunder a 20-0 advantage.

Fischer scored ODA’s final touchdown on a 4-yard carry with 3:02 left in the third quarter.

Imagine School of North Port, which is in its first year, scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, after ODA began substituting in some of its younger players.

“We tried to empty the bench and get some of the kids who hadn’t played all season long into the game and made some mistakes there at the end,” Timmons says. “I just feel bad for those guys who work all season long; you try to get them into play and then it goes where we have to put the other guys back in. So, hopefully, next week we can get those guys in a little bit again.”

Senior safety Brandon Place recovered a fumble late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Thunder. Place also intercepted a Sharks pass in the end zone two plays into the second quarter.

“It made our guys run their antennas up,” Timmons says. “You can’t look at a first-year program as a firstyear program. As I told them, we were a first-year program six years ago and we went 6-3, so there were a lot of people who thought they were going to get easy wins on us and we ended up having a winning record.

Braden River Pirates shut out on the road The visiting Braden River High football team fell to Bayshore 35-0 in a non-district game Oct. 11.

Quarterback Dusty Peebles, who came on in the second half, carried the ball seven times for 39 yards and completed three passes to three different receivers for 45 yards on the Pirates’ (0-7) final drive of the game.

Braden River returns to district action Oct. 19, at Sarasota.

+ Rage U11 boys win Halloween Havoc The Braden River Rage U11 boys team won the 2012 Halloween Havoc Tournament Oct. 12 to Oct. 14, at the Braden River Soccer Club.

The Rage won four games throughout the tournament, including a 6-3 victory over the Englewood Rays in the finals.

Manatee County commissioners unanimously lowered county permitting fees 6%, effective Oct. 1. The lower fees were originally presented in the county administrator’s proposed budget in May and are the result of increased efficiencies in the Building and Development Services Department and a rebounding construction industry throughout Manatee.

Permit fees were also lowered in the following areas: Accessory structure fees were reduced to $275 for structures below 500 square feet, or 51 cents per square foot more than 500 square feet; commercial additions and alterations were reduced to $375 for structures below 680 square feet and 51 cents per square foot more than 680 feet; residential additions and alterations were reduced to $275 for structures below 635 square feet and 42 cents per square foot more than 635 feet; windows/door/hurricane shutters replacement fees dropped from $125 to $75; reinstatement of expired or voided permits dropped from $200 to $50.

Permit fees may only be used to fund building review-related costs and cannot be used to fund other areas of the county budget.

+ Neal Community home sales surge in 2012 The sales records continue to stack up at Neal Communities, one of the region’s most prolific homebuilders.

The latest news: The firm reported 442 sales in 2012 through September — a figure that already beats the 2011 tally of 403 sales. In September, meanwhile, the firm sold 62 homes, up 59% from the 39 sales it had in September 2011, according to a release.

A key community in the company’s sales surge, according to the release, has been Central Park in Lakewood Ranch, just east of I-75. Neal sold 17 homes in the community in September and has now sold 314 homes there in two years.

River’s Reach, a newly opened com-

munity in Parrish, has also contributed to the sales growth, according to a separate news statement. That community has reported 19 sales since June 1.

“We are off to a fast start at this unique and scenic community,” Neal Communities sales director David Hunihan says in the release. “We took strategic steps as the growth went north over the past few years to reignite this community with great pricing, home sites and amenities, and it’s paying off during a typically slower time of the year in Florida.”

+ Medallion closes on 553 acres in eastern Manatee East County-based developer Medallion Home recently closed on 553 acres on State Road 64, along the county’s eastern boundary.

The developer currently has no plans to develop the property, but the acquisition

does include an environmental resource permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to excavate 3.7 million cubic yards of sand.

Medallion Vice President Pete Logan said the permit was the “sweetener” on the deal.

“We’re always looking for not only short term holds, but longterm holds,” Logan said. “This was a fantastic opportunity for something we could develop a longtime down the road.”

The new program is designed to prepare individuals to serve as school principals and/or building-level administrators.
