The Lock In Sat 16 Feb, 7.30pm Tickets: £16/£14 The brainchild of award-winning Folk band The Demon Barbers, The Lock In promises to do for English Folk dance what Riverdance did for Irish dance, and Diversity did for street dance, bringing some lesser known forms into the mainstream. A group of street dancers arrive at an apparently deserted pub. Local rumour has it that The Fighting Cocks is the place to be ‘after hours’ but, as the regulars arrive, a clash of cultures turns into a dance floor stand-off. The skill, speed and athleticism of dancers on both sides soon wins the others over, as old and new are brought together in an exciting and dynamic dance-off. Sword dances are performed with snooker-cues, pub bouncers dance the Morris and B-boys flirt with clog girls.

Meanwhile, house band The Demon Barbers take English Folk music on a new journey with hip-hop, house, funk and ska – and even says hello to burlesque and drum and bass along the way! “a consistently lively entertaining music and dance performance virtually guaranteed to raise weary spirits and send an audience home smiling.” The Times It’s more fun in a group! Parties of 10 or more qualify for reduced rate tickets. For more information call 01226 327 000

Watch out, ballet’s very-grandes dames are back... after previous sell-out performances ‘The Trocks’ return with a fantastic programme of dance, a lorry load of costume changes and lashings of diva attitude. Comedy doesn’t get more laughable than the Trocks but, as their fans know, the knockabout mishaps succeed because these hairy-chested guys in tutus can actually dance. With one foot in farce and the other in classical ballet, this is one hilarious night out! And when it comes to reviving rarely-seen relics of ballet’s Imperial Russian heyday – well, The Trocks’ repertoire is no joke. “The funniest night you’ll ever have at the ballet” The Guardian

As a member of Afro Celt Sound System and Imagined Village he’s featured in more line-ups than most, but it’s The Dhol Foundation that’s his pride and joy. Moscow City Ballet’s flawless production of possibly the world’s best-loved ballet, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, follows the fate of Prince Siegfried as he falls in love with the beautiful Swan Queen, Odette.

Northern Ballet is thrilled to announce an exciting new ballet for 2013 – The Great Gatsby – adapted from the classic novel by F Scott Fitzgerald.

With a superb orchestra and additional choreography by the distinguished Victor Smirnov-Golovanov, Swan Lake’s soaring climax sees the power of true love conquer the forces of evil.

On New York’s Long Island, in the heady, indulgent days of the 1920s, Nick Caraway comes to know his infamous neighbour Jay Gatsby – a mysterious millionaire with a secret past and a penchant for lavish parties. As the sparkling façade of Gatsby’s world begins to slip Caraway comes to see the loneliness, obsession and tragedy that lie beneath. The Great Gatsby promises to be a stunning retelling of one of the most compelling stories of the twentieth century.

TIME/DROPPER exhibits a subtle interplay between movement and light. Jose is transported through a visual hinterland of memories, combining highly physical choreography with poignant moments of intimacy. Evolution is an autobiographical solo that traces Claire Cunningham’s journey into dance and the continuing impact that dance has on her body. Claire’s crutches become extensions of her body, creating her own individual vocabulary. It tells the uplifting story of one woman’s exploration of dance, celebrating its liberating possibilities.

The acid test of a solo is having something to say and a unique way of saying it. Lucy Suggate’s Bonedust is a danse macabre for the 21st century. Inspired by medieval images of the dancing skeleton who personified death, it asks, “If I no longer have my body, what will I dance?” Ultimate Dancer presents Intercourse, a work created in collaboration with dance critics, which imagines the relationship between critic, performer and audience as an act of sexual intercourse. Riccardo Meneghini’s Je me souviens is a slowly unfolding last goodbye to someone who already left – an untangling and unfastening of thoughts and memories. “I am not eccentric. It’s just that I am more alive than most people.” Eleanor Perry’s Edith is a portrait of Edith Sitwell, the “high priestess of 20th century poetry.” Friday Firsts showcases new work by established and emerging independent choreographers and dance companies working on the small scale. Is a double act always humorous? Is choreography an implicit part of a double act relationship? Terrorists of the Heart is a duet by long-term collaborators Jules Dorey Richmond and David Richmond – a meditation on parenthood, ageing, grief and loss, as well as a political manifesto with some Morris dancing. It has been said that collaboration is ‘an affair of the mind’. For Jules and David it has been rather more – not only are they artistic partners, but they’re married, and parents. Oliver Bray and Rachel Krische present Ryan, a dance / singing / performance work featuring a collision of practices, a few ‘experts’, a beautiful dream and a charity single – God Bless ‘the Movie’. DeNada Dance Theatre’s Young Man! is a lustful, kitschy duel of seduction, examining the experience of gay men in Spain during the 60s and 70s. This eerie, quirky duet about two men is performed by two women, and choreographed by Carlos Pons Guerra. He’s on a slippery slope, he needs pulling back, and you better watch him! Dogs Land is provocative and outrageously profane, a new hardhitting contemporary dance theatre work by Douglas Thorpe. Douglas’s work has toured the UK and Europe earning him the reputation for making highly physical dance theatre at its most fierce, exciting and challenging. He seamlessly marries visceral movement with text; it is honest and at times harsh in its reality, but most compelling in his genuine approach to creating original works focussed around strong themes. Douglas has been tipped to be one of the most important voices in UK dance. Dogs Land promises to be a physically and emotionally enthralling evening that speaks to people about themes that often occur behind closed doors. Come expecting a full throttle experience!
