Following its critically acclaimed UK debut at Sadler’s Wells in 2012, the company is returning to the UK for its first national British tour to just five venues, including the only dates in the North of England at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford. The company is presenting a characteristically innovative triple bill of works including two UK premieres. Indigo Rose, created by acclaimed Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián, opens the programme with “a clever medley of five dances, involving a breathtaking furl of white silk” (Daily Telegraph). The dance is set against a driving score featuring Bach, Couperin and John Cage. This is followed by the UK premiere of Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue, commissioned by Cedar Lake from Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite. Pairs of dancers sweep in and out of the light in captivating sequences to the music of Cliff Martinez. The final piece by Norwegian choreographer Jo Strømgren, Necessity, Again, is set against a selection of songs by Charles Aznavour. Strømgren says, “There is nothing to understand; relax and let your imagination roam.”

Delicate themes of love are performed with suggestive gestures, rhythmic footwork and lyrical music. As a part of the 20 years celebration of Kala Sangam, we are pleased to present two regional dancers Remya Nambiar and Rashmi Sudhir in Mohiniattam. Both Remya and Rashmi hail from Kerala and are trained in Bharata Natyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi. Remya has additional training in Kathakali. They are now teachers and performers at many major events in Yorkshire.

An extraordinary mix of breakdance, popping and locking, contemporary dance, acrobatics and ballet. It tells a cautionary tale, from the creation of the Universe and evolution of man through to an imaginary apocalyptic future. The 10-strong crew create otherworldly scenes by morphing into structures, creatures and machines in thrilling, primal images of sacrifice and betrayal, of love and pleasure, death and destruction.

Bored with life, the monotony of the everyday and trying to find his place in the world, one man searches for the next high, the next hit, the next big thing; pushing every available boundary, risking everything until there is nothing left. Using its trademark urban contemporary language, 2Faced Dance Company returns with a new full length work by Artistic Director Tamsin Fitzgerald. Unpredictable, fierce, visceral and tender, the country’s leading all-male contemporary dance company continues to strikes at the audience’s soul. Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair... This show fuses dance, word, animation, music and comedy to create a surreal high octane work. Space is something we experience every day, it affects us physically and emotionally, providing us with senses of joy, happiness and fulfillment. But how does the body respond to its environment, to all the various colours, textures, sounds and visual stimuli that bombard it each day? Corporalis takes audiences on a rollercoaster of changing tempos and moods. It presents Retina’s trademark physicality, performed to a specially composed sound-scape melding electronic with classical influences, within a changing and moving set. Retina is an ambitious contemporary dance company artistically led by Filip Van Huffel. Working from both Belgium and the UK, Retina is a truly European company with a physically vibrant movement quality.

Gunilla Heilborn This is not a love story The Riley Theatre, Northern School of Contemporary Dance Sat 19 Oct, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 219 3018 Tickets £12.00, concessions £6.00 If you start with having a relationship with something dead, like a stone. Then you can move on to trees and flowers and some animals. And finally, you can try with people. “Pure perfection.” Dagens Nyheter (Swedish newspaper) This glorious gem is a story of two reluctant heroes – Kowalski and Vera. They talk, dance and never stop asking questions: Who did what? When? Where? And why? In a delicate search for context and continuity our heroes end up on a journey that becomes not about the destination, but the transformation and reflection along the way. A journey that keeps starting over again and again, like a classic road movie. Gunilla Heilborn is one of Sweden’s most acclaimed performance and film artists, and her works are characterised by cinematic timing and humour. With an existential flair, Heilborn has brought both laughter and reflection to audiences with previous works, including The Five Year Plan, Potato Country and This is Alaska. “The love story is elsewhere. It is with the spectator, who Gunilla Heilborn and her two associates, with masterful grace and measure, allows to imagine the show you wish to view…a show that you cannot forget.” www.myword.it Presented in partnership with Yorkshire Dance.

Of course, the show title has a double meaning – it’s sexy and intellectual. Expect silliness, see a man talk to his bottom and find out what not to do during a heart attack. New Art Club was formed in 2001 by Tom Roden and Pete Shenton and is fuelled by their shared spirit of adventure. This award-winning double act is unlike any other, and their unique blend of dance and comedy has garnered praise from the UK to Australia and back again. Warning: this show has already left some people feeling ‘a little bit dirty’; contains some brief nudity (long enough to see ‘the works’); contains some brief dancing (silly and emotional); contains some puerile songs (there’s a good one about a shed).
