LIAISON

THE SCHOOL PROGRAM

Moving a family with school-age children overseas is no small feat. When there are so many moving pieces, it’s easy for the little details to slip through the cracks. Mr. Joshua Fly, School Liaison Program Manager, is here to make sure that no stone gets left unturned in the PCS process for families. Once a family receives their orders to Yokota Air Base, Mr. Fly is one of the first to reach out. In his own words, the goal of the program is to “be a conduit between the base, the families and the schools.” As Yokota’s first full-time liaison in several years, he is eager to provide continuity in education as kids transfer from school to school. In addition to ten years of teaching experience, Mr. Fly also has ten years of civil service under his belt, meaning he wholly understands the complex dynamic between DoDEA, Yokota Air Base and military families. Whether you’re curious about academic opportunities, entitlement benefits, school sports, EFMP or even transportation to and from school, Mr. Fly is here to field any questions or concerns a parent might have. “What gets me excited to get out of bed in the morning is just helping people. So whether that’s helping children or helping a family with whatever their situation is, that’s what I like to do. It’s not hard to motivate yourself to do that.” If you have questions regarding your child’s academic career here at Yokota, Mr. Joshua Fly is ready to help. Call 225-7917 or email 374FSS.FSY.SLP@us.af.mil for more information.

18 HORIZONS SEPTEMBER 2022

19HORIZONS SEPTEMBER 2022

On the 10th of this month, the nation of Japan will celebrate the festival of Tsukimi. Directly translated, the word means “viewing the moon,” and it is a long-standing tradition that has permeated the culture for centuries. Customarily, Tsukimi is an opportunity to show gratitude for a bountiful harvest and hope for prosperity in the following seasons. On the old lunar calendar, the 15th of each month was always the full moon, known as jūgoya. The 15th night of the eighth month was considered the best evening to see the moon every year, giving rise to the alternate name for this mid-autumn festival: Jūgoya no tsukimi. Jūgoya was introduced to Japan through the Tang dynasty in China (A.D. 618–907), and it spread like wildfire amongst the aristocrats of the Nara (A.D. 710–794) and Heian (A.D. 794–1185) periods. These aristocrats would host moon viewing (tsukimi) parties, usually held on a boat where they could observe the reflection of the full moon in the surrounding water. Those in attendance would spend the evening penning poetry and playing music. Over time, these events slowly trickled into the lives of the commoners and by the Edo period (A.D. 1603–1868), the people had adopted and adapted this autumn festival to become a celebration of the rice harvest. Those who are participating in this celestial festival gather at the tsukimidai, or the viewing place for the moon. Usually a window or balcony, the tsukimidai is decorated with offerings like tsukimi-dango, susuki, and taro bulbs—all of which bear significance to the event. Tsukimi-dango are rice dumplings rolled into the shape of a ball to represent the moon. Some traditions call for them to be displayed in pyramids of 15, to represent the 15th night. Other traditions display only 12, one dumpling for each month of the year. Eating the tsukimi-dango is said to bring joy and good health. Placed next to the dumplings are susuki, or plumes of pampas grass, bundled into groups of five or ten. Pampas grass closely resembles rice plants and is used as a decorative piece during the festival to represent the plentiful harvest. Occasionally, taro bulbs are also set out, each bulb producing multiple shoots which signify a large family. If you’re an iPhone user, you can search “moon festival” in your emojis to see the emoji especially crafted for tsukimi. It features tsukimi-dango and susuki in its artwork! The word tsukimi has often appeared in the names of dishes here in Japan. The moon-like shape of an egg yolk has made it an easy descriptor for many meals, such as tsukimi ramen, soba and even hamburgers. Anything topped with an egg may be referred to as the “tsukimi” edition of the food. This article is for educational purposes only.

21HORIZONS SEPTEMBER 2022 In the Edo period, festivals served to unify the minds of the people, fostering strong and stable communities. The Kawagoe Festival has evolved to represent over 370 years of the town’s history while preserving the style and elegance of the Edo era “Tenka Matsuri” (Unification) Onfestival.the third weekend in October, the town of Kawagoe, also known as Little Edo, hosts the Kawagoe Festival. Spectacular festival floats carrying crafted dolls with customary decorations are paraded around the center of the landmark Kurazukuri Street, known for its historic and traditional Japanese architecture. Spectators will be surprised by the sheer scale of the numerous floats as they pass each other. The Kawagoe Festival’s biggest highlight is the “Hikawase,” when the floats meet at intersections, face one another, and compete in Japanese-style music comprised of flutes, drums and hand bells. Though the competition has no winner, the exchange of festival music and wildly moving lanterns is an awe-inspiring sight. For updates on all things ITT, visit /YokotaITT. Coming soon!
