ERIN STOLZE Employment Program Manager & Transition Assistance Program Manager

4

HORIZONS JULY 2022

Stolze supports the mission at Yokota by helping military members and civilians with everyday life challenges. Being part of the Airman & Family Readiness Center (A&FRC) and her education as a Licensed Master Social Worker gives her the opportunity to assist the military community in various ways. The A&FRC offers career workshops, voting assistance, culture programs and anything that can help individuals feel at ease being part of a military community. Stolze is the newest staff member at A&FRC. Starting her journey as an Employment Program Manager & TAP Manager this past February, her daily responsibilities include reviewing resumes and teaching classes on how to create resumes in the Private Sector and Federal side as well. She is also responsible for teaching most of the Transition Assistance Program workshops, where active-duty members separating or retiring from the military can come together to network with each other to facilitate the transition into the civilian sector. Stolze and

the A&FRC try to reach as many people as possible to make a positive impact in everyone’s life, “I think a lot of people don’t realize all we can do at the A&FRC. I think that’s the biggest challenge, really pushing out there that we are here for them, if we can’t help we probably know someone and can get you to the right person that can help you.” Stolze loves and enjoys what she does on a daily basis and likes being that support system for the military community. “I love talking to people and helping them in every way. I see a lot of people that are transitioning out of the military or retiring, it’s a stressful part of their military experience. For me to be that support for them is really awesome.” When Stolze isn’t working at Yokota she spends her free time traveling around Japan, trying new food and learning about the culture. She is a member of the base volleyball team, volunteers her time as the assistant coach of the girls high school volleyball team and enjoys spending time with her beloved golden retriever, Goose. Stolze looks forward to helping the military community here at Yokota and supporting the mission every step of the way.

Mediterranean Bistro was created in 2019 with the sole purpose of providing the community with healthy, vegan and vegetarian options that the entire Yokota community could enjoy. The restaurant lives inside the Yujo Community Center and offers both breakfast and lunch. The best sellers are the paninis and salads, the Greek Pesto Panini is packed with pesto shrimp and a mix of veggies on a baguette. Customers can also enjoy the Mediterranean Veggie panini being the perfect option for vegetarians. Additionally, the restaurant also offers “Build Your Own” which consists of choosing your base, protein, veggies, fillers, side and dressing. If you want something light, their menu features homemade hummus and soup of the day that are handcrafted by the restaurants’ chefs. The chefs have a passion for cooking and it shows. Aside from the dishes available on their menu, they work together to create new recipes to provide the community with different limited edition dishes and sauces. Takashi Moteki, the Supervisor Chef, spent one year in France studying French

cuisine. He has been working at Med Bistro for the past three years and his education and expertise has helped him improve the recipes at the restaurant. The goal at Med Bistro is to keep the menu fresh, as they obtain their vegetables and other products from the local Japanese vendors. All of their menu items are made from scratch, including the dressings. The team knows that vegan and vegetarian customers have limited options when it comes to restaurants. “We have many customers that are vegan and vegetarian. I offer the falafel which is made with garbanzo beans” said Takeshi Koyama, Med Bistro’s Manager. Fresh eggs are utilized for breakfast and egg whites are available upon request. The staff looks forward to providing the community with an outdoor patio this summer and are planning on extending their business hours in the near future. They are currently in the process of launching a grab & go option that will feature salads, wraps and fresh fruit. The restaurant offers to-go and dining options as well. The staff looks forward to serving healthy, quality food to the Yokota community.

Climbing Mt. Fuji is a challenge! Some brave Yokota residents have taken the adventure and climbed to the top of this majestic volcano. The best you can do is prepare ahead of time and don’t get caught off guard when you decide to go on this unique journey. Yokota’s Mount Fuji climbers shared their stories and offered advice for those getting ready to hike Japan’s tallest mountain.

Alison Wagner “Last year my friends and I attempted to summit Mt. Fuji. I had done it before on an Outdoor Rec trip and told them it was amazing and doable. We decided to go on our own due to the uncertainty of trip cancellations at the time. We stayed at a nearby hotel to make a weekend of it. The morning of our attempt we typed in 5th station on Google Maps and started our drive. My friends had never been and I assumed we would end up at the same place the bus drops you off. Little did we know it took us to the start of one of the most challenging trailheads instead of the one most people do. I told them this didn’t seem like the same place and after the first few stations, we realized this was increasingly harder. Loose rocks, no cover, people falling around us constantly. We didn’t make it to the top that day but still had an amazing adventure. The lesson was, to book the trip with Outdoor Rec. Or at the very least put the correct 5th station of the trail you intended! There are many trails and they all have 5th stations!”

Salete Wolford “Choose your Mt. Fuji trail wisely and take a previctory photo. Decide the day and time to climb Mt. Fuji. Go prepared to fail too, know your limits. Take the right trail, know the closest place to rest. Book a mountain hut and be choosy with your souvenirs. Educate yourself on altitude sickness. If you go alone, go extra prepared! Prepare the proper clothing and equipment and buy food and water beforehand. Last but not least, check your travel insurance policy, in case an accident happens. Take as many pictures as you can. It is your chance to be cheerful on this adventure!”

Rhea Anais “We started from station zero and made it to station 8 after 10 hours. We stayed for the night, but when we got up at four in the morning to catch the sunrise, it was raining really bad. Even though we were dedicated to climbing to the summit, the people coming down were telling us that “we were committing suicide” if we decide to push through it. Bottom line, we can always come back and we’re not going risk our lives.”

OUTDOOR RECREATION TIPS & RECOMMENDED GEAR! The Fujiyoshida Trail is uphill about seven hours, downhill about four hours. The distance is between six to seven kilometers from the 5th Station to the summit. Bring hiking boots with thick socks, definitely no sneakers! Bring a water backpack (25–40 liter size), 1-2 liters of water, high calorie food, snacks, rain gear, quick-drying clothes, head light with extra battery, a trash bag, approximately ¥10,000, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, hiking poles and gloves. Before you try to conquer Mt. Fuji, train for the hike at least two months before. Recommended exercises are squats, sit-ups, jogging and go on hiking trails.

Lindsay Kay “Ever since we received orders to Japan last November, I knew at the top of my bucket list was to hike Mt. Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan. The recommendation is to start at the 5th station and the rim is reached at the 10th station. We chose the Yoshida Trail, as it was the most popular, there was an option to descend on another route at 8th station. On the way, we saw the top of the mountain break through the clouds. It was an incredible sight! The tradition is that you take a wooden hiking stick with you, and as you climb to each station and the huts in between, you can get a stamp burned into it that displays the elevation or decoration of the hut on that level. The trail started out as a dirt path that weaved through an open field which then led to a stone path through the woods. Next, we were surprised to see the path was full of chunks of volcanic rock, of all sizes and shapes. It was difficult to maneuver and our feet continued to slip with every step forward. The difficulty level increased, but we were still eager beavers ready to attack the mountain, plus our overall plan was to only make it to 8th and then cross over to the descending trail. We could also begin to feel the air getting thinner. Part of the hardness of the hike was the unexpected! Going down, now that would be the easy part, right? Well, more switchback on slippery volcanic rocks at a 45-degree angle down, is not so easy. With each step, we could feel our toes shoving to the front of our shoes. We were so thankful we did not drink all of our water going up, because there was no way to purchase water going down. Our last 1.5 hours back to the 5th station was through the pouring rain. Finally, the 5th station was in view. Woo, hoo! After 8 hours and 15 minutes of almost non-stop hiking, we had conquered Mt. Fuji! Definitely a once in a lifetime thing!”

Joseph Holliday “The first time I climbed Mt. Fuji was in August of 2021. And oh boy, was it an unexpected hike. The first 45 minutes to an hour of the hike was good weather. I then received a text from one of my supervisors while on the mountain that some really dark clouds were rolling in towards us from Yokota. Pretty quickly the climb got wild. We ended up climbing Mt. Fuji through the intense typhoon storm that took place. High winds, cold, pouring rain, very cloudy and little vision. It got dangerous at times, that was for sure. But, we knew we had to power through it. We knew the quicker we got to the top, the quicker we could start hiking down the other side. It would have been way too dangerous to turn right around. Let’s just say everything was close to numb by the time we got to the top. Even though we were prepared with cold weather and rain gear. There definitely weren’t many people hiking up that day. We went from t-shirts and shorts to all long sleeve and rain gear very quickly.”

HORIZONS JULY 2022

The Fuji Kachoen Garden Park welcomes you with over 30 varieties of feathered friends. The owl enclosure holds over 100 owls and most were hand bred by the park staff and are quite friendly to people! The park is also home to an extensive selection of over 10,000 begonias, fuchsias and hydrangeas which are exhibited throughout the park. These blooming flowers can be enjoyed all year round. For lunch stop at Asagiri Food Park, you can take a leisurely stroll through the trees in the park, visit each workshop and experience the taste that each company is proud of. Around Mt. Fuji’s base, past eruptions and resulting lava flows have created multiple caves in the Fuji Five Lake region. Up until the beginning of the Showa era, the wind cave, with an average temperature of 3℃, was used as a refrigerator to store silkworm eggs. The lateral cave is 201m long and 8.7m high and one can see lava shelves, rope-like lava and ice pillars that do not melt even in the summer. The Bat Cave, named after its former winter inhabitants, is the most extensive of the lava caves. In total, the cave is nearly 350 meters long and has multiple large chambers and diverging tunnels. Both caves have been designated as Japanese natural monuments.
