This was a great mountain for them to practice--it was small, And there were only a few people on the slopes. I, especially, loved the fresh powder!

TAKASHI KUDOH Bowling Pro Shop Operator Having grown up in Fussa City, it was always Takashi Kudoh’s goal to work at Yokota Air Base. He knew learning English would be necessary so he practiced using the dictionary and textbooks. That led him to receiving the opportunity in 2014 when he was hired to work at the Tomodachi Lanes Bowling Center. Kudoh works as the bowling pro shop operator where he drills bowling balls and customizes them to size for customers. Drilling the balls takes precise measuring and details that Kudoh has perfected. He feels fortunate to work in an environment he has enjoyed since he was four years old when he first picked

up a bowling ball. Now, a professional bowler, Kudoh is ranked number eight in the country and has won one major and three regional titles. He has been featured on television and magazines and uses his skills to teach bowling lessons, at Tomodachi Lanes, to beginner and experienced bowlers. His goals include having more customers visit the pro shop and playing in a televised PBA tournament that his friends and customers at Yokota can watch. Kudoh enjoys working with the military community and getting an opportunity to make people smile. His managers expressed that with his kind heartedness, attention to detail and bowling expertise — they feel lucky to have him.

SMSGT INES WATKINS Flight Chief, Military Personnel Flight

“Enjoy the ride. Sometimes we are so focused on the end goal that we don’t enjoy the journey. The goal could be the same for everyone but the path getting there could be different. Enjoy—make it your own and maintain the relationships that you build along the way.”

RENEE COOPER Chief, Civilian Personnel Flight

“Take advantage of every opportunity that comes available to you. Civilians and military members have so many opportunities that will help with career progression — make time to take those opportunities that are presented to you.”

MSGT TERESA TYLER First Sergeant, Force Support Squadron & USAF Band of the Pacific “Stand on your own two feet and have confidence in yourself. It may be hard to find the balance between being too strong or too nice but have confidence that your voice matters. Make sure you are leading by example because setting an example goes a long way.”

MICHELLE CRAWFORD Chief, Child and Youth Services

“Have a support system of other women that are doing those things that you want to do or are where you want to be because often times you don’t see it in yourself but someone sees it in you and helps to lead you in that right direction.”

By presidential proclamation, the month of March was designated as Women’s History Month: a month dedicated to honoring women’s contributions and impact on American history. In honor of Women’s History Month, we spoke with a dynamic group of female leaders within the 374th Force Support Squadron. We learned what motivates them, challenges them and most importantly what we can all learn from them. These eight women are just some of the many leaders contributing to the Air Force mission while simultaneously normalizing women leadership in the military and encouraging female empowerment within the workforce.

“Don’t let your personal situation define or limit you from your potential. Everyone comes from a different background — whatever family, personal or professional situation you are in, don’t let that define you or hold you back from anything.”

MARIA CHAPA Chief, Airmen & Family Readiness Center

“You have to adjust to the different atmospheres and climates that you work in but be careful not to forget to be yourself. You are so much better being in your own skin than trying to blend in.”

Women have long determined their professional success by their ability to adapt within the maledominated culture, but that perception has taken a remarkable shift. “When I first entered the career field 30 years ago, it was predominantly male,” explains Cooper whose career field in human resources is now primarily female. With females making up 20% of the Air Force, a percentage that is rapidly increasing, Capt Wilmot describes being a woman in the military as “second nature.” And Chapa appreciates how being in, or working with, the military gives you a front row seat to seeing strong women leaders play their part within the Air Force. But with its advantages come plenty of challenges. While laws are expanding to protect women in the workplace, there still remains obstacles to overcome. SMSgt Johnson notes the distinct challenges of being a female woman of color and the additional barriers those biases may

The U.S. Military Removes Ban Against Women Serving in Combat Positions.

CAPT CHANTEL WILMOT Military Personnel Flight Commander

“Don’t be afraid to stretch yourself. A lot of times we don’t want to go into a situation unless we feel 100% ready for it or prepared, but I’ve learned the most about myself and my leadership abilities when I was unprepared, which forced me to grow in that situation.”

create. Col Chang was given the advice early in her career that, if she wanted a seat at the table, she would have to work twice as hard and know her stuff. Rather than let that advice deter her, she used it as motivation to always be prepared. Like Col Chang, Crawford believes women must confidently face challenges head-on. She assures women, “We do know what we are talking about and we are the subject matter experts in our field.” Female leaders have learned the importance of supporting and empowering other women within the military. Col Chang notes that female leaders should embrace the role-model status, serve as a mentor and be deliberate in taking an interest in all of their younger airmen. But it’s not just women who can help break the glass ceiling. Even as women are becoming more confident in their contributions, SMSgt Watkins insists, “personally and professionally, we can’t do it alone. We need men to be working beside us,” particularly

“Do not give up hope. The Air Force – and the world in general – is constantly evolving and you are starting to see more women than ever before, in leadership positions. Know that others have paved the way for us to continue to grow. Keep grinding.”

as allies. Cooper’s last piece of advice for young career women? Don’t forget about your life outside of work and find a balance between work and personal life. Ambitious women in leadership roles are pushing boundaries daily, as Col Chang explains, “The perception is changing, and with our new administration, it has motivated and empowered young women even more to feel like they can do it one day.” In order to keep the positive trends going, Crawford encourages career women to share their personal journeys. “Sharing your story and struggles to get to where you are can help someone find their path.” As we recognize the substantial progress of female leaders, we can also look forward to the potential of even further future advancement. As MSgt Tyler reminds her young daughters, “You can do it! Why not?”

Ancient Japanese village, Iyashino-sato, stands on the site of a former farming village on the western shores of Lake Saiko. The village was reconstructed and reopened as an open air museum and traditional craft village where people can learn about the culture and buy different local handicrafts. The village is made up of more than twenty houses that have been converted into shops, restaurants, museums and galleries. Each of the shops specializes in a traditional craft such as pottery, incense or weaving. A few of the houses contain museums, such as the Watanabe House which has exhibits on the daily life of the farmers who used to live in the region. The remaining houses include an art gallery that displays local artwork, a produce shop and a portrait studio where visitors can try on kimonos or samurai armor for a small fee and take photos. Restaurants with local Japanese foods and rest houses can also be found around the village. Next, we will visit the small village of Oshino in the Fuji Five Lake region, located between Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka on the site of a former sixth lake that dried out several hundred years ago. It has a set of eight ponds which are fed by snow melt from the slopes of nearby Mount Fuji that has filtered down the mountain through porous layers of lava for over 80 years, resulting in very clear spring water that is revered by the locals.

Refer to 14 CFR 61.23 for complete information on duration of medical certificate. After April 1, 2016, student pilot certificates do not expire. The certificate will be surrendered and superseded upon successful completion of the higher certification. Student pilot certificates issued prior to April 1, 2016 expire according to their expiration date–either 24 or 60 months from the date of issuance.

horizons march 2021

CAN I RENEW STUDENT PILOT CERTIFICATE OR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE? No, but you can get a new one.

WITH A NEW STUDENT PILOT CERTIFICATE, IS MY FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR STILL REQUIRED TO PLACE ENDORSEMENTS ON IT? No. All solo endorsements are placed in the student logbook and are no longer required to be on the student pilot certificate. Any previous endorsements on a paper student pilot certificate should be maintained as part of the required training record.

IF I SOLO IN MORE THAN ONE MAKE OR MODEL OF AIRCRAFT, MUST I HAVE AN ENDORSEMENT FOR EACH ON MY LOGBOOK? Yes. Your flight instructor must make this endorsement before you solo in each make or model of aircraft. A list of endorsements can be found in the current addition of Advisory Circular 61.65.

DOES THE ENDORSEMENT TO SOLO ALLOW ME TO MAKE SOLO CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHTS? No. You also have to get a cross-country flight endorsement from your flight instructor.

IS THERE A CHARGE FOR THE STUDENT PILOT CERTIFICATE? There is no charge for an application sent directly to the Flight Standards District Office (FSDO). However, an FAA-designated pilot examiner, an airman certification representative associated with a part 141 flight school or a certified flight instructor can charge a reasonable fee for processing an application for student pilot certificates.
