magazine

Volume 9, Issue 6 Ralph Turney Chief Visionary / Principal Marguerite Striler Publisher marguerite@yogaspamag.com

Inpiring You to Live Fit This issue marks the last issue of Yoga & Spa magazine for the year 2018 and the end of our eighth year in publication. This achievement is a credit to the Y&S team of writers, photographers, creatives and support staff who make our publication one of the best in the industry. Year after year, Y&S gets better because we constantly challenge the possibilities. In 2019, we promise to push the boundaries even further starting with our 10th Annual Living Fit Expo on January 26th at Plaza Frontenac! It will be an incredible, interactive event full of educated health professionals eager to encourage and inspire you to Live Fit. Yoga & Spa magazine is excited to provide you our “Get Inspired Issue.” In a culture consumed with productivity and accomplishments, we often overlook the importance of inspiration. Inspiration awakens us to new possibilities by allowing us to rise above our ordinary. Inspiration propels from the impossible to the achievable and changes the way we see our own capabilities. I hope the articles in this publication will inspire you. Be sure to read…”Don’t seek Inspiration, Be the Inspiration" which takes place in a remote village in Kerala, India and “Bed Camp” written by the very talented JoAnne Laird, a friend of mine in New York who has a gift for photography and writing. With Thanksgiving around the corner, you’ll want to take note of Julia Calleo’s incredible recipe in our Food for Thought section and check out Dr. Nick’s article on how to avoid getting sick during flu season. As 2018 draws to a close, I extend well wishes to you and your loved ones for a very Happy and Healthy New Year! Enjoy!

Anti-aging at its best! Activated Charcoal Products

Wellness From Wendy

From the Outside in with Lemongrass Spa

Our bodies are naturally designed to detoxify, which simply means taking in the good and eliminating the bad. For instance, the act of breathing in fresh oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide is detoxifying. But when our bodies can’t keep up with natural detoxifying we suffer the consequences through premature aging. The effects of premature aging can often be seen in the skin. You can suffer from conditions such as dark circles, acne, dullness, dehydration, or even sallowness. Luckily, there is one ingredient that is readily available and effective in helping with the detoxifying process: activated charcoal. Activated charcoal (or carbon, as it is sometimes called) is a highly absorbent, non-toxic substance that acts like a magnet to many substances, including dirt, impurities, and oil, among others. It can be used for insect bites and is often given internally to people who suffer from poisoning because it has the ability to absorb the poison and safely eliminate it from the body. Activated charcoal works the same way on your skin, drawing impurities, chemicals, oils, and toxins out and safely eliminating them when you rinse with water. A word of caution though: more is not necessarily better. Activated charcoal is so effective that it should not be used on a daily basis and is typically used just once or twice a week. Used too often it can dry out

the skin, which may lead to other skin problems. Lemongrass Spa recently launched three new skincare products handcrafted with activated charcoal to help your skin detox. Incorporating these products into your skincare routine, or using them all together once or twice a week, will help reduce your skin’s aging process. Your skin will feel luxuriously soft and rejuvenated with each use! If you live in a city or suburb, I would recommend using activated charcoal products more often, as the exposure to pollution is much higher in those areas. Here are some ways you can incorporate each new product into your skincare routine and achieve healthier skin.

Detoxifying Charcoal Face Soap Even if you work at home, stepping outside for a walk or running errands exposes you to pollution. Replace the cleanser you use at night with this face soap to help your skin detox from the environmental pollution it has absorbed throughout the day.

Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Polish Mixing activated charcoal with a gentle exfoliator is a double detox. Not only are you removing dead skin build up, you’re allowing the activated charcoal to work deeper. After you give this product a gentle

scrub on your skin, allow it to sit for 1-2 minutes to let the activated charcoal absorb before rinsing. Enhanced with acai berry and raspberry seed oil antioxidants, you’ll enjoy a subtle fruit essence with every application. This facial polish is perfect when you don’t have time to do a full facemask or detox system, so include it in your routine once or twice a week.

Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Mask This mask is great to add to your routine when you have at least 10-15 minutes to be able to enjoy the maximum benefit. If you chose to do your full detox routine once a week, then apply this mask after you have cleansed with the Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Soap and used the Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Polish. SPA&BEAUTY Start Living a Life of

Radiance

This Holiday Season! by Dr. Zinia Thomas, M.D.

As joyous as they are, holidays bring their share of stress. When we’re vulnerable, our defenses need to be up and we need extra care to combat the stress burden. Add in today’s fast-paced, overworked, socially connected, yet disconnected, sleepdeprived society, and self-care is more important than ever. However, with a shortage of time, it is hard to invest in self-care. At this rate, stress and injury are sure to set in, leading to chronic issues like inflammation, which is typically the root cause of all disease. Radiance Float + Wellness specializes in great shortcuts or biohacks to get your body and mind functioning optimally in record time! One of the quickest ways to optimal health is restoring nutrients our body needs to function. IV Nutrient Therapy boasts 100% absorption of the vital essential nutrients given through a bag of IV fluids. Clients report a calming sensation and near-immediate improvement in symptoms of stress, low immunity, fatigue or even a holiday hangover! The replenishment of nutrients and vitality gained can last for days, and with repeated infusions, can effectively manage disease states such as leaky gut, asthma, migraines, and low immune states, including acute viral infections, like the flu. Infuse the anti-aging goodness of IV NAD+ and Glutathione for youthful energy and a glow! Between IV infusions, maintain nutrient levels with our IM (intramuscular) injections, transdermal vitamin patches from PatchMD and our highly-absorbable oral isotonic vitamins from NutraMetrix.

Recovery services such as Float Therapy (great for skin, muscle, joint, mental stress and pain) or Cryotherapy (great for pain, inflammation, mental stress via the endorphin rush and metabolism - burn 500 calories in 3 minutes!) must be incorporated in weekly life to combat effects of stress. The Infrared Sauna is a must for detoxification, and benefits include decreased cortisol, improved stress and pain tolerance, as well as increased flexibility, improved skin and a cardiovascular-like workout without any work! Cryoskin 2.0 is our biohack tool for fat loss, cellulite removal and anti-aging facials through cryo-technology. Our bodies are 75% water and 70% microcirculation; improve the biggest components of your body with ionizing alkaline Kangen Water and BEMER Vascular Therapy, here at Radiance or in the comfort of your own home. Be well, Dr. Zinia Thomas, M.D. Owner & Chief Healing Operator 1760 S. Brentwood Blvd. (Across from Whole Foods) www.RadianceSTL.com

Perfect Time

Now Is the for Personalized Skin Care Fall signifies a time of Harvest and a time for Winterization of the lawn, the house and the car. We take plants in, mulch around others, dig out, cut back, check and re-align the tires, change the closets and put up the fall door wreaths. So, how do you WINTERIZE your skin care program? Fall is the short window of time between a plethora of summer activities and the Holiday party scene. This is IT! It is a great time for a consultation to design a Personal Treatment Plan to undo summer damage and prevent the dryness of the cold winter winds and blasting furnace fires. The Personal part of the Treatment Plan means exactly that. Often clients present saying, “My friend got THIS procedure and she looks 10 years younger. I want that too.” Personal means we are going to analyze the condition of your skin, how the aging process (even if you are 25, you are aging) is impacting the

face – skeletal and soft tissue. Do you have a short forehead or a tall forehead, deep set eyes or small eyes with heavy lids, thin or full lips, dry, oily or combination skin... and the assessment goes on. The treatment progression to achieve and maintain beautiful skin year-round almost always involves more than one treatment modality, more than one treatment per modality, and - time. Skin regenerates approximately every 27 days, so why does it take months to see this progress? Often, layers of change are required, and results are not always evident until the base has been strengthened. Every face starts at a different place and every body responds at a different rate, but every one can get the result. The Professionals at Nouveau take all of this, plus your budget, social constraints and commitments, timeline and more into consideration when designing your Treatment Plan. Change is achievable for

SKIN CARE IN THE WINTER by Lynn Schroeder

Cold weather dehydrates your skin, robbing it of protection even if you’re using your usual hydrator. Indoor heaters can wreak havoc, leaving skin parched, flaky and even itchy. Your skin needs extra nourishment in the winter, indoors and out. That’s where Active Hydration Serum comes in. Active Hydration Serum features a 3D3P Molecular Matrix that continuously delivers a moisture-attracting solution of Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin that defends against dry

Here are some DOs and DON’Ts for Winter skincare: DO hydrate. When skin is at its driest, a daily and nightly hydration boost is exactly what it needs — and serums pack the biggest punch, in some cases raising hydration levels by 200% after just one use.* Layer one under your moisturizer morning and night to comfort dry skin.

DON’T skip sunscreen. Even if you don’t see the sun, its harmful rays can find you 365 days a year. Help prevent premature signs of aging by applying sunscreen every day.

DON’T use hot water. Whether you’re showering or washing your face, using water that’s too hot can dry out your skin. For best results, use lukewarm water and moisturize when skin is still damp to help lock-in extra moisture.

DO exfoliate regularly. Dead skin cells

make it harder for moisturizers and other products to reach the uppermost layer of your skin and do the job they’re supposed to do. Once a week, use an exfoliator to reap the benefits of your products and enjoy softer-feeling skin.

DON’T neglect your hands. There’s nothing enjoyable about having dry, rough hands — and they can make you look older than you are. Keep them happy by applying a rich cream or balm at least two or three times daily.

DO change up your routine. A few tweaks to your usual skincare regimen can make a big difference. In winter, your skin might feel better if you switch to a gentler, creamier facial cleanser. Following these tips will help you feel and look your best, no matter how low the temperature drops.

Skin… it’s a beautiful thing. Wear it well! Contact Lynn Schroeder at 314-280-9569 or visit www.LookingYoungerToday.myrandf.com for more information.

YOGA&FITNESS At Majestic Dance Studio, Indulge in Dance to Combat Those Holiday Pounds “Choreographed movement is absolutely an aerobic workout, as it includes running, spinning, jumping and other movements that elevate the heart rate. The faster the movement, the more calories burned,” Alex Borodko, owner and operator of Majestic Dance Studio in Frontenac, explains. “At the same time, some forms of dance, such as couples dancing, include movements conducive to building muscle, giving you Photo by photo.wrkhors.com

Pick your holiday poison! something sweet? Eggnog, cookies, pumpkin pie with extra whipped cream? Or, are you a savory person? Dressing, gravy-covered turkey, buttery mashed potatoes? Better yet, maybe, from late November to early January, you indulge in it all, ensuring you satisfy every craving. So delicious and so easy to put on some extra weight. Consider this alone: the now ubiquitous Pumpkin Spice Latte has just under 400 calories. With food and drink temptations a large part of Holiday socializing, an uptick in exercise can prevent putting on the extra pounds, introduce better health habits and provide for a fun hobby. For an out-of-theordinary type of exercise, consider dancing under the instruction of a pro to ensure proper form and allow for the highest calorie burn and muscle build.

an anaerobic workout as well.”

To keep those holiday pounds off, Borodko ranks these four dances as the biggest calorie burners: Jive Related to the jitterbug, this lively international latin style demands a lot of stamina, high energy and speed from a dancer to accommodate the fast tempo of the music.

Samba This energetic, rhythmic dance of AfroBrazilian origin is characterized by simple forward and backward steps and tilting, rocking body movements. The Samba is danced to music in 4/4 time with syncopated rhythm.

Cha Cha The Cha Cha is a true Latin dance, originating in Cuba where it evolved from the danzon, an older form of Cuban dance. The primary difference in the Cha Cha is the addition of a triple step that replaces the slow step in the Mambo/Rumba.

Quickstep The Quickstep is the light-hearted form of the standard ballroom dances, with movements that are fast, powerfully flowing and sprinkled with syncopations. The upbeat melodies that accompany the Quickstep make it suitable for both formal and informal events. Alex Borodko owns and operates Majestic Dance Studio with his wife Sara. Located in Frontenac at 10460 German Blvd, Majestic offers a wide variety of dance lessons for all skill levels – ballroom, salsa, Bachata, swing and more. The studio also offers yoga and other fitness classes. For more information visit majesticdancestudio.com or call 314-736-6414

YOGA 101 What’s

YOUR Yoga?

Laura Lockton - RYT200 Yoga Teacher, certified AIReal Yoga teacher and aerial performer

Laura’s journey exploring body movement and the connection between mind, body and spirit began as a young dancer and gymnast. After many years of dance, she began studying yoga, natural healing, meditation and a variety of spiritual disciplines. In 2010, Laura discovered aerial dance, aerial yoga, flow arts/ fire dancing and partner acrobatics. In her own life, Laura has experienced an immense shift through aerial dance and yoga because these types of body movements have profound benefits beyond physical health. It is the holistic healing which creates joy, confidence and balance that fuels her passion for aerial arts and yoga. Her desire to create opportunities for others to experience this type of transformation led Laura to create ReKinection, a collaboration of yogis, guides, performers, musicians and artists. Working together, they've inspired others through empowerment with a focus on aerial & flow arts, yoga and holistic health.

Debby Siegel - MSA, RYT A yogi for six years and teacher for two, at this stage in Debby's yoga journey she finds herself drawn to the adventurous forms of yoga - aerial, acro and paddleboard to name a few. Aerial yoga delivers the therapeutic effects of spinal traction while hanging upside down. She recommends this highly. Debby found her aerial device, a suspended, circular steel apparatus resembling a hula hoop at a yoga festival during the 2017 eclipse. It was there that she began flowing between postures on the lyra - similar to a yoga flow - and has been doing so anytime she's able to since. Photo by Jamie Seed

Christine Kick - E-RYT500, AcroYoga International and Acro Revolution Teacher

Christine began practicing yoga in 2011. A year later, she discovered AcroYoga and Aerial Arts when she was enrolled in a yoga teacher training where she was encouraged to explore a variety of yoga styles and movement modalities. She found solitude on her mat, whereas aerial would consistently push her edge to new and exciting limits. In yoga, you stand and push against the ground, whereas in aerial, you pull, hang, and climb on an apparatus against the pull of gravity. On the Earth and in the sky, Christine finds balance in her movement practices. She knows that on the other side of overcoming any obstacle is a more empowered version of herself. According to Christine, it’s worth it just for the feeling of relief you get when your feet touch back down.

Come see these talented yogis at our Living Fit Expo on January 26th as they perform on an aerial rig doing silks, lyra (shown in middle photo) and much more.

Alignment Basics: Urdhva Dhanurasana – Full Wheel Urdhva Dhanurasana increases circulation, strength and flexibility in the spine, abdomen, shoulders, arms and legs.

Step 1: To begin, lie on your back and position

Step 2: Press the big toe mound of each foot

your feet under your knees, with your feet hipwidth distance apart. Place the palm of your hands by your ears and spread your fingers wide. Face your fingers toward your shoulders and point your elbows up to the ceiling.

into the ground. Press down into your feet and lift your hips up toward the ceiling. Pull your front hip bones toward your low belly.

Step 3: Press into your hands to lift your head

Step 4: Press into your hands and feet and

off the mat and then settle the crown of your head back down. Walk your hands as close to your ears as your flexibility allows.

straighten your arms for Full Wheel. As you lift upward, draw your front hip bones toward your low belly to continually broaden and create space in your low back. Back out of any uncomfortable compression in the low back by softening the elbows and/or walking the feet away from the centerline of the body.

Pro Tips #1 – To create space in the low back and avoid uncomfortable compression, avoid rolling the weight of the feet into the pinky-toe sides (this is a common misalignment that creates discomfort in the low back). #2 – For stability, wrap your shoulders around your spine as you press into your hands to lift up.

#3 – As your arms move to straight, soften the elbows and do not lock the joints. This will allow you to continually broaden through the chest and avoid unnecessary tension in the neck. Modifications – Walk the feet away from the centerline of the body if there is discomfort in the low back or not enough flexibility.

Natural Methods for Managing the Cold & Flu Season

The alarm goes off at 6:30 a.m. and that feeling immediately hits you. Your breathing is stuffy, you’re coughing, and your forehead feels warm. You’re coming down with a cold or possibly the flu. “I’ll drink a few cups of coffee and take some cough medicine along with ibuprofen to ease my symptoms,” you tell yourself. “Today will be tough, but I’ll get through it.”

cardiovascular problems. •A ntibiotics: Sometimes physicians prescribe antibiotics, yet they have no beneficial effect on the common cold. Antibiotics wipe out all your gut flora, which is bad news, considering about 70 percent of your immune system lies in the gut.

That’s standard thinking when you feel an illness coming on. Unfortunately, suppressing cold and flu symptoms with over-the-counter cough and cold medicines often does more harm than good.

Overall, inconsistent evidence exists for the efficacy of cold medications to prevent and treat the common cold. While they might help a little, they could have adverse repercussions. Side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, upset stomach, nausea, nervousness, and constipation.

How to Get Rid of a Cold: Do Cold Medicines Work?

10 Ways to Naturally Eliminate or Minimize Cold and Flu Symptoms

Visit any drug store and you’ll find countless formulas, all promising fast, effective relief. For more severe symptoms or a cold or flu that sticks around beyond a few days, your doctor might also prescribe medications. Unfortunately, many cold medicines can have adverse or minimal results:

There’s a more natural, effective approach to the flu season than medications. Whether you want to avoid whatever bug is going around your office or minimize the impact of a cold or the flu, these 10 strategies can optimize your body’s natural immune defenses.

•A ntihistamines combined with decongestants, analgesics, or both: Have a small to moderate effect on the common cold in older children and adults. • Cough suppressants: Research shows that cough medicines don’t benefit children. For adults, the benefit is unclear but likely small. Norman Edelman, MD, senior scientific advisor at the American Lung Association, says we lack evidence that suppressants and expectorants help with coughing. • NSAIDs and Tylenol: While nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can relieve pain and fever in people with upper respiratory tract infections, they do not relieve other symptoms and can have adverse effects including gastrointestinal and

1. Consider home remedies for a cold. A Google search will yield many natural alternatives to relieve coughs, sneezing, and other cold and flu symptoms. Gargling with warm salt water, for instance, can ease cold symptoms like a sore throat. 2. Eliminate immune-sabotaging foods: Sugar weakens the immune system. 3. Find your ideal weight to lower inflammation: Obesity and inflammation also weaken the immune system. 4. Sleep well: Aim for seven or eight hours of quality, uninterrupted sleep to minimize the common cold or flu. If you’re sick, additional sleep can strengthen your immune system. You can also use a tryptophan supplement to help regulate your sleeping habits.

5. E xercise consistently: Make move more your mantra to support immune health. 6. T ake Epsom salt baths: Add a cup of Epsom salt to your bath. Epsom salt is an excellent form of magnesium. 7. Minimize stress levels: Stress wreaks havoc on the immune system. 8. Optimize your antioxidant defense: Glutathione, your body’s master antioxidant! Eat more fruits and vegetables! 9. Visit your chiropractor. Get your spine adjusted!!! 10. U tilize the right nutrients: Vit D3, Zinc & probiotics. A healthy immune system requires a healthy central nervous system. Ensuring the spine is free of subluxations, which interfere with the normal functioning of the nervous system, supports optimal immunity to minimize your risk for colds, the flu, and other viruses. www. The Exercise Coach Is Changing Perceptions and Lives

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve your mental health. Regular physical activity is a powerful depression fighter that can have a positive impact on anxiety, ADHD, mental disorders and more. Exercise encourages changes in the brain, including neural growth, and reduces inflammation, to name just a few of the many benefits. Exercise

ebbie Fagin just wants to hug her grandkids. The happily married 65year old enjoys Face Timing with her grandchildren, but she longs to spend time with them, in person. The last time she flew on a plane was 20 years ago, however, and she can’t remember when she last took a long ride in a car. You see, Debbie has suffered from panic disorder since she was 22, and she is deeply afraid to get on a plane or into a car for a road trip.

also releases endorphins, which are powerful chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits. Instead of going to the pantry when we are stressed, we need to be making better choices, which in the end helps you reach the goal you want to accomplish. Exercise helps give you the confidence and the courage to make those choices.

rather than just Face Timing them,” she explains with enthusiasm. We tend to get stuck on the number on the scale and not realize all the wonderful benefits that exercise does for us. We are constantly looking at the mirror and judging ourselves, losing focus on what is happening internally. We need

As Debbie finishes her story, she has just one final piece of advice. “If you have a story like mine and you want to go to a place that is not intimidating and want to look forward to your workouts, please go visit my friends at The Exercise Coach.”

For most of her adult life, Debbie was also very sedentary and spent a lot of time sitting on the couch. She realized her quality of life and her mental health were suffering and knew she had to do something about it, but she didn’t know where to start. Debbie’s husband has been encouraging her for a very long time to take care of her self, and on their 31st wedding anniversary, they gave themselves what they considered the best gift – making an appointment at The Exercise Coach. All Debbie wants to do is be able to go visit her grandchildren that live in Chicago and Iowa. Since joining the Exercise Coach, she’s gained confidence and energy while increasing her level of activity, and, she notes, “I’m a much happier person.” Recently, she was even able to take an hour and a half long car trip. She’s having success because, as she says, “The Exercise Coach approach is very different and I really look forward to my sessions with my coach. They don’t only motivate me,” she continues, “they meet me where I am at that particular day and encourage me to make small changes that I can maintain.” Her goal is to build up the confidence to travel by plane or car to visit her family; “to be able to hold my grandbabies in person,

on the screen. Our proprietary equipment can help those that have been working out for a long time as well as those that have never stepped into a gym before or have not done any other fitness activity. Another benefit is timeliness. With the Exercise Coach, you get all the health benefits in just 2 workouts a week, and each session is under ½ hour.

At The Exercise Coach, we’re looking for more stories like Debbie’s. To encourage your success, we are offering new clients two free sessions to try our unique approach to wellness. If you made one small change a day, just think what that would look like at the end of the year. It’s the small changes that count not the large changes that you cannot maintain. The Exercise Coach has changed the perception of working out to be less complicated and easy to track your progress. Our equipment is as smart as your smartphone, but geared towards your current fitness level, motivating you to make small changes every session because of the feedback you are getting

WELLNESS Changing lives through skeletal strength conditioning An interview with Jason Hicks, the owner of OsteoStrong Clayton A number of OsteoStrong centers have been popping up across the St. Louis area, as well as the country. What is OsteoStrong? OsteoStrong is an exciting new system for developing functional strength and wellness by focusing on your skeletal system. We’re unique in our approach to health, although the principles of our system have been taught in medical schools for over 125 years. OsteoStrong Clayton is proud to be the fourth center in St. Louis to open and, due to high demand, more are sure to follow.

Why did you choose to get involved with OsteoStrong? I was an unhealthy and overweight child who couldn’t keep up with the other kids. Additionally, I suffered from asthma, chronic bronchitis, and major skin allergies. While this doesn’t have much to do with bones and strength, I know the loss of personal freedom you experience when you don’t have your health. Throughout the years, I’ve helped friends and colleagues with various aspects of their own physical goals based on my research and experience, and the rewards of doing so are tremendous. When I first heard about OsteoStrong at a Tony Robbins seminar, the science behind it just clicked with me and within two months I was fully committed. I truly believe that this is one of the absolute best things you can do for yourself, and I’m honored to bring it to the people of St. Louis.

What’s a typical OsteoStrong session consist of? When you arrive at the center for your weekly appointment, one of our session

coaches will greet you with a smile and ensure you get checked in. You’ll begin by stepping onto a vibration plate for two minutes, which will stimulate your central nervous system and improve agility, balance and coordination. From here your coach will take you through a set of four patented, osteogenic loading stations called Spectrum. Each machine targets a different area of the body where you will engage in 10-20 seconds of actual effort in a safe and controlled isometric push or pull force application. This 10-20 second period is where the magic happens! After completing all four stations, you’re invited back to the vibration plate. The whole process for a regular session only takes about 10-15 minutes.

10-15 minutes a week sounds too good to be true. How do you know it really works? 10 to 15 minutes a week does sound too good to be true, but our system is backed by research, peer reviewed studies and thousands of success stories. We’re able to help our members reach and often surpass their goals with minimal time and effort because we use science and technology to pinpoint what actually triggers the change in our bodies that we desire. In fact, you’ll hear the term “growth trigger” used regularly, because that’s the moment when your nervous system has recognized the need to grow new, healthy bone tissue. What type of person should use OsteoStrong? We have members as young as 9 years to over 90 and from all walks of life. Our younger members are still growing their

bones naturally, and our system will help increase that growth rate to proactively support them throughout their lives. Our senior members are usually more reactive to the effects of naturally occurring bone and muscle loss. They typically want better posture, relief from joint and back pain, increased strength and stability or stronger, healthier bones. Our athletic members report improvement in their strength, speed, power and agility. They avoid injury more easily, too. At the end of the day, almost anyone can benefit by joining the OsteoStrong family. That sounds amazing! What can I do to try this out? Just give us a call, shoot us an email or stop by one of our centers. We will schedule a brief tour and answer any questions you may have. If you find that OsteoStrong is right for you, becoming a member is easy and there are no long-term commitments. Call us today. We’re excited to meet you!

What does it mean to be “old”? Do you think of fine lines and wrinkles or maybe something more serious? Maybe you think of your overflowing medicine cabinet, full of pill bottles with your name on them. Maybe you think of the additions to your grocery list, like depends or panty liners. Or, perhaps, instead of thinking of the new things you will need you think of the things you will lose, like mobility and independence. You may even think of the ever-shrinking amount of time you have left with loved ones. Whatever it is that you think of when you think of becoming “old,” it’s likely that age has very little to do with it. When someone says that age is just a number, they couldn’t be closer to the truth. Your health, mobility and independence, and even the amount of life you have left is not determined by your age as much as it is the health of your nervous system. Your nervous system controls and coordinates every other bodily system. This includes but is not limited to your integumentary system, which is your skin and connective tissues, your urinary system, your cardiovascular system, and your muscular system. When a subluxation, which is when one or more bones in the spine becomes misaligned, is present it can greatly reduce the function of the nervous system which then can affect the other systems of the body. This is what ultimately leads to the need for so many medications, or incontinence, or even a shorter life span. However, taking medications or just living with the problem is not correcting the root cause of the issue. By removing the subluxation, you restore function to the nervous system, restoring function to the entire body. Neurologically based chiropractic does just that. It restores the functionality of the nervous system, allowing you to be the healthiest version of yourself. A healthier nervous system means a healthier integumentary system, meaning healthier hair, skin, and nails. It means a healthier urinary system, which means more dry nights and less leaks during the day. It means a healthier cardiovascular system, which means less medications to try to control blood pressure. It even means a healthier muscular system, which means more independence and less fear of falls. When it comes down to it, neurologically based chiropractic care does not only add years to your life, but life to your years. For more information on how to add life to your years through gentle, neurologically based chiropractic care, contact: Dr. John Calhoun | Empower Chiropractic 2951 Dougherty Ferry Rd, Ste 104 | St. Louis, MO 63122 (636)556-0256

Give Yourself the Gift of Cleansing! With the holidays fast approaching, our thoughts turn to giving. But what do you give the person who has everything, even if that person is you? May I suggest something that may not be on your list at this point - a cellular full-body cleanse. NOT a colon cleanse. Colon cleanses are all the rage. They sound like a great idea and you can definitely tell if your cleanse worked. At that point, you may wish it hadn't! Think about this with me: If you take in nutrients, they don't stay in your colon… they travel throughout your body. If you take in toxins, from your food, the environment, and even what your skin absorbs (i.e., "everything"), they don't stay in your colon either. A colon cleanse is only part of the picture.

Intermittent fasting is all over the news these days. Google has nearly 23 million articles on the topic. Here are some of the main benefits: • Human growth hormone (HGH) levels skyrocket, leading to weight loss and muscle gain.

The approach includes an herbal drink or small snack every hour during a cleanse day. Here are the advantages to this approach: The right herbal drink enhances the liver's detox abilities. The small snacks keep blood sugar level and reduce the feeling of hunger.

• Insulin sensitivity improves and insulin levels drop.

It's easier to do a 2-day cleanse/intermittent fast than approaches with no nourishment.

• Cellular repair is accelerated.

Give yourself the gift of cleansing today!

• Genes related to longevity and disease protection express themselves differently.

Many of the health benefits of intermittent fasting are found in government publications linked in this website article:

There are many ways to implement intermittent fasting, varying from eating only during an 8-hour period each day to fasting completely 1-2 days a week.

Isagenix has developed a proven variation called nutritionally supported intermittent fasting.

Common Stretches for the Psoas Muscle

In the last issue of Y&S, I promised some ways to stretch/strengthen the psoas muscle. This muscle is a deep-seated core muscle connecting the lumbar vertebrae to the femur. Remember this is one of the more misdiagnosed pain syndromes in the body. Psoas tightness can affect activities such as walking, cycling, running and skating. Symptoms of psoas involvement can include difficulties with hip flexion and posture, low back pain, hip/groin pain, higher incidence of quadriceps strain and difficulty rising from a seated position. As a chiropractor, I see this issue daily in my practice. There is usually an alignment issue in the lumbar spine pinching the nerve that supplies the psoas muscle. It may not be clear which came first, the tight psoas pulling the vertebra out of alignment or the pinched nerve causing the tight psoas. So, I treat both with a chiropractic adjustment and active release technique. Following are the two most common stretches I give for at-home care. Of course, you can find many others on your internet search.

Lying Psoas Stretch 1. Sit on the edge of your bed or a table. 2. Bend your right leg, while keeping the other one extended. 3. Grab your right leg, or knee with your hand and gently pull it backward while you slowly lie back. You should feel a stretch in your left hip. 4. Hold it here for 30 seconds and relax into it. You can go up to 1 minute if you please. Repeat on the other side and do 3 repetitions on each side.

Crescent Lunge 1. Using a yoga mat or pad, start on both your knees, then gently lift your left leg so that your foot is flat on the ground and your knee is bent at a 90 degree angle. Your right shin is now flat on the ground and should be extended back as shown above. Now shift your weight slightly forward into a lunge. If you have trouble getting down on your knees, do this in a staircase by putting one foot up 2-3 stairs from the lower foot and then lung forward slightly.

2. Keeping your back straight and pelvis tucked, lunge forward until you feel a stretch in your left hip. You can use a wall or chair for support if necessary. 3. Hold this stretch for 15 seconds, and then repeat 3 times. Repeat on the other leg.

FOOD for THOUGHT

Soy Brussel Sprouts +Apples & Pork Prep time: 6 hours Cook time: 45 mins Total time: 6 hours 45 mins

INSTRUCTIONS Pork Marinade Things:

1 tsp kosher salt

First prepare the marinade for the pork. In a large bowl or giant ziplock bag add all of marinade ingredients except pork and mix together. Next add your pork and fold until each piece is fully covered in marinade. Let sit in fridge for as little as 4 hours or over night. Remove thirty minutes from fridge before cooking and let sit at room temperature.

1 tsp ground black pepper

Cooking Time

1 tbsp ghee

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

1 medium yellow onion chopped into ¼" pieces

Prep brussels sprouts by cutting the ends off and removing excess leaves

INGREDIENTS 1 lb brussels sprouts 2 tbsp melted ghee

1 cup chopped granny smith apples (1/2 " pieces) 1 tbsp garlic powder

Pork/Marinade 1.5 lb pork tenderloin cut into ½" thick medallions. 2 tsp minced garlic 3 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp oystser sauce 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

RECIPE NOTES:

Line a large rimmed baking sheet with foil. Add sprouts in a single layer onto foil. Toss sprouts with the melted ghee and sprinkle with salt and pepper (about 2 tsp salt and 2 tsp pepper) Place baking sheet into oven for 40 minutes, stirring halfway through. Remove sprouts when done and set aside. While sprouts are cooking, heat 1 tbsp ghee in a large pan Add your chopped onions and saute for about 5 minutes. Add apples and continue to saute for an additional 8 minutes.

I roasted my brussels first as I didn’t want them to to become mushy while cooking in the pan with the rest of the juices – this allowed me to throw them in the pan at the very end right before serving!

Add garlic powder and stir.

Marinade. The. Pork! Don’t skip this step! It really does make an actual difference. That statement is not sponsored. This is a true story.

Add your brussels sprouts and toss. Salt and Pepper, to taste and then serve.

Apples: any variety will do. I prefer the grannies as I still get the savory tang with a bite of sweetness. but honestly – super sweet would taste really great as well.a Let the choice be with you. Also, pro tip: sriracha is golden for a final touch of delight.

Next add your marinated pork with juices and cook for an additional 6-8 minutes, or until pork is cooked through.

HEART& SOUL

Being Heard

a Key to Mental Health Carl Rogers (January 8, 1902 – February 4, 1987) was a famous American psychologist and among the founders of the client-centered approach to psychology. He is widely considered to be one of the founding fathers of psychotherapy. His belief was that for a person to grow they need an environment that provides them with genuineness and selfdisclosure. His counseling method was to listen carefully to his client and help them become aware of their needs, and it is widely used today in the most prestigious counseling venues. The idea of self awareness of one’s own values, goals and fears is key to mental health. To put Carl Rogers’s methods in basic terms, we all need to be heard, validated and appreciated. In order for the individual to feel worthy we must have some vehicle of being heard and valued. Once our goals are well established with our own awakening of self-awareness, it is simply a matter of pursuing our wishes. Rogers studied the work of Abraham Maslow and his theory of Self Actualization, which, simply put, is achieving one’s full potential including creative activities. A wonderful lady once said, “I have no regrets for my failures, we all fail, I regret what I did not try.” A key component to mental health is self-awareness and solidification of goals. Clearly and correctly both Maslow and Rogers believed that counseling, listening and validating were powerful tools for the fulfillment of a happy person. It is normal and healthy to seek counseling in the growth of our self-awareness. Dr Katcher is presently Vice President of ABC Parenting and an active educational consultant and motivational speaker. edkatcher@yahoo.com 636-751-9695

Self-Care Through the Holidays & New Year by: Molly Eames, M.Ed National Certified Counselor Sex Therapist and Educator

Holistic Healing, Genuine Listening Real Growth

The holiday season is filled with joy, excitement and a healthy dose of stress. When we do not take care of ourselves, we ultimately end up feeling mentally and physically exhausted: perhaps catching that seasonal flu or cold that won’t go away, or finding that our interactions and reactions towards our loved ones are short fused and hectic. We may even be wishing for all of the holiday wonder to disappear immediately.

When practicing self-care, I like to find ways to connect via mind, body and spirit. Here are a few self care reminders that will help to increase your passion over this holiday season.

Mind: Why not get involved with a non-profit that excites you or volunteer at the local Humane Society or food pantry. Brighten someone else's day by writing letters to our military personnel who are serving overseas. Another feel good activity is helping provide clothes, food and holiday gifts to a family that is less fortunate. When we do good things, we feel good inside. And when we feel good inside, we tend to be more open to passion.

Body: Exercise is a simple, powerful and effective way for us to curb the holiday blues. By moving our bodies and engaging our muscles, we are providing the perfect outlet for stress - which allows us to focus on relaxation. Not only does exercise feel great, but it stimulates the release of endorphins - which helps to relieve pain and stress, and can help to regulate and boost your mood!

Using holistic and strength based methods, we will discover your strengths, bring awareness to the mind-body connection, and empower you to make healthier decisions.

Spirit: This is the time to feed your soul! Take a moment and check in with yourself - your body will always tell you what you need. Connect with others, take time for yourself, get enough sleep, eat well, meditate, read, whatever it is that you need!

BED CAMP by Jo Laird

Your Home Is Your Sanctuary We do real harm to ourselves when we don’t listen to our bodies when they cry out for relief. Stress just doesn’t make us cranky and shorttempered. Serious health issues can result when we don’t listen to what our bodies and mind need and let stress take over. Life can be hectic and messy and sometimes moves way too fast. There are moments when I can’t remember the last time I was alone with myself or when my mind was clear. Have you ever reached the point where you’re not listening to what other people say because you’re not even listening to yourself anymore? When I get close to such a state, I take to my bed for what I call “bed camp.” This is an entire day reserved just for me, at home, in bed. A day home from work or a weekend day when the family is out. A day alone with just me, with nothing to do but relax and focus on myself. No work, no bill paying, no laundry, no cleaning, no organizing, no calls or emails, no errands. No outside world. Just me alone with me. For a whole day. In bed. I take these days very seriously and plan carefully for them, creating a tranquil sanctuary in my bedroom. Crisp fresh

sheets are put on the bed the night before, extra pillows are added, an activity table is set with things I might like to do in bed — books and movies or crafts. A soothing playlist is ready. I move in a comfortable chair. Meals and snacks are prepared the day before, to be eaten in bed, on a tray. Dressing for the occasion is equally important. This is not my day for dirty hair, worn sweats, old socks and ragged underwear. I leave my frumpy slippers under the bed. Special loungewear is reserved just for bed camp days, and I always work in a favorite piece of jewelry and a special fragrance. Every Bed Camp day is different, depending on what has sent me to my bed. Exhaustion breeds a day of soft jazz and lots of naps, with a long hot fragrant bath between nap number two and nap number three. Stress can lead me to a good novel, movies and/or an entire season of a favorite TV series, a craft project or a home beauty spa treatment — anything to get my mind off whatever was causing the stress. And after all the winter holiday gatherings are over and the house guests have finally departed, a quiet day is so badly needed, it almost hurts. What is common to all bed camp days is a clearing of my mind and a calming of my spirit. The world doesn’t seem as harsh, and I can feel solutions to problems beginning to emerge, good energy making its way back. I feel nurtured and relaxed. A day well spent, taking care of me, and I can physically, mentally and spiritually feel the difference. I’d like to feel like this every day.

us cranky and short-tempered. Serious health issues can result when we don’t listen to what our bodies and mind need and let stress take over. There’s no question that getting enough sleep helps us perform and feel better. And once up, starting with a good breakfast and eating healthier during the rest of the day will support a higher level of energy and greater clarity of thought. Finding moments during the day for self-nurture, to meditate, go to the gym or a yoga class, read a chapter in a good book, or just be quiet and calm for a few moments, are equally important and should not be treated lightly or easily dismissed. We must become our own best advocates. Our family and friends or co-workers might not even realize or appreciate the stress we’re dealing with. We’ve become so good at covering it up, not sharing our needs, it’s no wonder. At the end of the day, we’re the only one who knows what we need and we’re the best one to deliver.

The Power To Create Change Comes From Within by Katherine Ponte

Stigma is a shield created by society, made up of misunderstanding and fear of mental illness. When we look away from someone behaving erratically or “strangely” on the street, that’s the fear society ingrains in us. Perhaps we’re scared to consider the possibility that the same could happen to us; that we might be shunned by society, too. The shield of stigma also stops us from seeking help for our own mental health. When faced with a stressful life event or emotional challenges, we might carry the hurt or confusion inside. Perhaps we avoid facing a potential diagnosis, so our illness only grows worse. Stigma facilitates mental illness turning into the “monster” it doesn’t have to be. Social perceptions need to change. However, stigma is so deeply rooted in societal norms that it can take a long time to eradicate. And people like me, people living with mental illness, can’t wait on society to change. We need to live now. In fact, we need to be pioneers.

Our Experience Combats Stigma First, we need to overcome our own belief in society’s fears. This requires finding hope, and specifically recognizing the possibility of recovery. Recovery

from mental illness is living a full and productive life with mental illness. With this mindset, we can take ownership of our condition and live a fulfilling life. This can be one of the most powerful forces for change. Stories of living fully with mental illness can help reshape society’s bias. They also provide inspiration and guidance for other people living with mental illness. This is the power of peer support and sharing lived experience. It creates a cycle of more people finding recovery, and then in turn, society seeing more positive examples of people living well with mental illness. Society needs to see what life with mental illness can and should be—a life of possibility, not a life sentence.

Our Experience Inspires Others When people share their mental health journeys, it also helps set our own expectations. Recovery is hard and there is no smooth path to get there. It’s also not a cure, it requires continuous patience, discipline and determination. There will be stumbles and uncertainties along the way. This is the reality of mental illness. That’s why relatable, reallife examples are so valuable.

48 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

Knowing that others are going through similar challenges can help us build resilience. The result is selfempowerment by the example of others. We, the mental health community, rely less on the image society projects upon us, and instead focus on the image reflected to us by our peers. This is the power from within ourselves and our community. I believe that this type of person-driven recovery has been overlooked as a way to combat social stigma. It’s become so ingrained that not even people with mental illness think recovery is possible. Too many of us allow society’s fears to become our own. Together, we can reverse the vicious cycle of stigma and instead, power the virtuous cycle of hope and recovery. HEALTHY PETS Once one of the fastest Turf Sprinters at Belmont and Saratoga, crippling knee injuries end ended Metro Meteor's racing career. With no chance at a second career as a pleasure horse, Metro was adopted of the track by Ron & Wendy Krajewski. Ron noticing that Metro liked to bob is head to get attention, thought Metro might enjoy painting. With brush in teeth, Metro now paints bold colorful abstracts. The sales

The Horse Who Picked up a Paintbrush By Frank DeFord

This is a Thanksgiving story about a horse. Actually, a horse artist. I don't mean an artist who paints horses, like Degas or Remington, but a horse who paints — and thereby also raises money for less fortunate horses. Really.

But Ron Krajewski, an artist who lives in Gettysburg, Pa., and his wife, Wendy, adopted him. Soon, though, the Krajewskis found that the horse's knees were so bad they couldn't even mount him to ride trails.

Metro Meteor was a well-bred thoroughbred, foaled in 2003, who specialized in sprints on the turf. He competed at the top tracks, like Belmont and Saratoga, earning just short of $300,000 in purses. He was born with a knee condition, however, and he needed surgery twice to remove bone chips. Each time he came back a winner.

Worse, a vet told them that Metro Meteor's condition was terminal. He had two years, maybe.

But his knees did him in, and he ended up losing cheap races at a minor-league track named Penn National. At last, the track vet wouldn't let Metro Meteor back into the starting gate. Gelded, he couldn't stand at stud and, like a lot of broken-down thoroughbreds, Metro Meteor could have simply ended up as horse meat.

But the Krajewskis so loved their horse. And when Ron noticed that Metro Meteor liked to bob his head up and down, he somehow decided that if he put a brush in the horse's mouth where a bit used to be, and put a canvas in front of him where a finish line used to be, Metro Meteor could, yes, paint. And, incredibly, he did. Big, colorful brush strokes. Soon, in fact, the horse was the best-selling artist in Gallery 30 in Gettysburg. With half the money from his paintings, the Krajewskis sought to find a way to save Metro Meteor's life.

50 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

of Metro's paintings help other horse in need.

And a young vet, Dr. Kim Brokaw, worked up an experimental treatment that reversed the bone growth. The knees are still a problem, but, thankfully, Metro Meteor can at least walk the trails now and, after all, an artiste has to devote more time to his craft. And the rest of the money that Metro Meteor makes painting? It goes to the New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program, which helps retired thoroughbreds find homes and get new careers. How many old horses can give thanks that an equine pal has donated almost $45,000 from the sale of his works to keep them alive and loved? So on Thanksgiving, along with the turkey and stuffing, please pass Metro Meteor his favorite treats, oatmeal cookies and Twizzlers — yes, Twizzlers.

Want to Give a Pet as a Gift? Think Again

by Patrick Anderson

'Pets are not Christmas gifts,' says the Humane Society. A new study published recently found dog owners generally had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those who didn't own a dog.

There's the temperament of the animal, whether it will be good with children. Some pets act out if the owner is a gender they aren't comfortable with.

Kittens might be cuddly and cute, but giving them away as Christmas gifts comes with risk.

Unknown allergies can also cause a family to quickly backtrack on what should always be considered a 10-year minimum commitment, said Allison Kolander, special events coordinator for the Humane Society.

Bethany Buitenbos sees it every year. Pet adoptions tick up before the holidays. Then, in January and February, surrenders increase as families drop off unwanted animals at area Humane Society locations. "Most people say they just don't have the time," Buitenbos said. As a result, the city's animal shelter encourages people to avoid giving pets as gifts. That's because some of them wind up abandoned as soon as the reality of pet ownership sets in, as does the decision to make a major life change without full input from family members and others in the household. There's a number of potential pitfalls for parents who think bringing home a furry bundle at the holidays is a good idea.

"It might be overwhelming for the kids," Kolander said. "It might be overwhelming for the animal. Often, however, it is the unexpected commitment of time and resources — vet bills, food, training and basic care — that drive families to surrender pets in the months that follow the holidays. The Humane Society recommends avoiding the practice altogether, though some national groups condone gifting pets as long as the buyer is careful. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals supports pets as gifts, but "only to people who have expressed a sustained interest in owning one, and the ability to care for it responsibly," according to a position statement from the group.

However, there are alternatives for parents who want to give a puppy or kitten to their children during the holidays. Buitenbos said families can buy an animal crate or write up a "pet promise" and involve the children in picking out a pet. If parents are set on adopting before the holiday, they should avoid surprises and take similar steps to include the entire household in the pet-buying process. Kolander said families should also be careful to make sure the new pet will fit with any existing animals in the house, and should avoid using pets as a teaching tool. "A lot of parents will get pets to teach kids responsibility," Kolander said. "Then, it's the animal that suffers. You should get a pet for your kids to reward responsibility instead. www.argusleader.com/story/news/ business-journal/2017/12/18/petsnot-christmas-gifts-humane-societysays/957116001/

TRAVEL

Don't Seek Inspiration...Be the Inspiration James Calleo’s work as a writer and storyteller began in his high chair before he spoke his first word. As an infant, Calleo sketched images on paper to tell his story; now, as an accomplished singer/ songwriter, Calleo transforms his images into a creative musical experience, with an uncanny ability to blend folk and country music with a little bit of rock and roll. Encouraged by his family, Calleo began his lifelong love affair with music at an early age. He never took formal music lessons as a boy; he preferred to learn by ear, teaching himself the guitar and piano. By age 16, he had already written several pieces and performed regularly from a makeshift stage in his basement to high school friends, neighbors and family. In 2008, Calleo organized a band and took the lead on booking gigs, managing production and writing songs entirely on his own. When Calleo turned 18 he went off to college but dropped out one year later. “In hindsight, I knew college wasn’t for me, but I went anyway. Partly because I didn’t know what else to do.” After he dropped out, he found himself living with his parents and building koi fish ponds while his passion for music started to fade. “I was in a dark place and didn’t know how to get out.” That next day, he got a phone call that changed his life. “A volunteer organization, Kerala Volunteer, called me about a teaching opportunity in a remote village in Kerala, India,” Calleo recalls. “They were looking for somebody to teach English through music to prepare kids for English speaking job opportunities in a city nearby,” he explains. “The next day, I bought a plane ticket to a rural village in southern India and a few weeks later, me and my guitar were on a plane to Kerala.” The children at the school greeted Calleo with love and excitement. They were thrilled to have someone from America teaching at

RRUP, their school, and he was excited to be there. Calleo created songs with the kids, sang Bob Marley and had so many good laughs, and in exchange his students taught him traditional Indian songs and dance. “It was then that I vowed to seek fulfillment through the pursuit of serving others through my stories and my music. I began writing short stories again.” After a few months, Calleo’s girlfriend Meghan joined him in Kerala. A dynamic yoga instructor, she began teaching yoga to the kids in the halls of the school house while Calleo played his music. 'I hope my music and Meghan’s yoga inspired the kids in some way. I know their smiles, laughter and willingness to learn inspired us.' When asked if he would do it again, Calleo says YES definitely but adds… ”Packing up your bags and traveling abroad is not the only way to get inspired. It can be as simple as waking up and trying something new to shake up your daily norm. Actually, it’s more about getting off the couch and NOT seeking inspiration, but BEING the inspiration!” Today, James and Meghan combine Yoga and Music to inspire others. Adelman: Making Your Dream Vacation a Reality Vacation. When you hear the word, what do you think of? Lounging poolside at a resort. Hiking trails and watching the sun set over mountain vistas. Sunrise yoga followed by spa treatments on the beach. Or perhaps a day spent at museums and people watching in an historic city. The perfect vacation is different for everyone, and that’s just one of the reasons a good travel agent can be your best option for ensuring a great getaway. Recently, Yoga and Spa sat down with Amy Kemper of Adelman Travel to discuss the benefits of using a travel agent when planning your next vacation.

Y&S: Tell us a little about

yourself, do you enjoy traveling?

AK: Yes, I’ve always loved traveling.

As a senior in high school, I traveled to Spain with my family and it was a vacation I will never forget. Barcelona and Madrid were highlights for me; I loved the architecture and the food. The trip was like nothing I’d ever experienced before and I created so many lasting memories with my family.

Y&S: Did those memories help you decide to be a travel agent?

AK: They really did. I enjoy my work because I want to help other people

create unforgettable experiences with their families and the people they love and choose to spend their time with. We can strengthen our bonds and deepen our emotional connection when we experience new places, new things together. I’ve been with Adelman Travel for 6 years now, and in addition to my clients, I supervise a group of travel agents. We all focus on the same thing – ensuring that you have the best possible vacation. I love getting to know my clients, through conversation or over a cup of coffee, and learning what’s most important to them. I ask them to

envision their ideal vacation, and then I work on taking care of the details so they can focus on making the most of their time together.

Y&S: What are some of the

other benefits of working with Adelman Travel or a travel agent in general?

AK: It’s our job to not only stay in-

the-know about the best ways to enjoy popular vacation spots, we know about the unexpected gems, special services and extra touches that make your vacation memorable for all the right reasons. And, on those rare occasions when a problem does arise, we are here

to advocate for you and ensure you have the best possible experience. Because I’m an avid traveler, too, it’s also important that I help my clients get that singular moment or experience they want to brag about for years to come. Whether that’s yoga on the beach with your best friends or a picture of your surly teenager giggling like she’s five again, I want to help you turn those dreams into memories.

Y&S: Are there any travel trends that

you’re noticing and think our readers would find interesting?

AK: Oh absolutely! My emphasis is working with families and friends, the family you choose as well as the one you grew up with. So one thing that hasn’t changed is the popularity of all-inclusive resorts and packages. What has changed is the variety and unique offerings in all-inclusive vacations.

Zoetry vacations are a perfect example of individualized, all-inclusive vacationing. One popular destination is the Zoetry Paraiso De La Bonita in Cancun’s Riviera Maya, which offers breathtaking nature hikes, special wellness classes and exclusive activities like the popular Temazcal Shaman Ceremony held on the beach. This unique ceremony combines music, botanical remedies and ancient traditions to help you release stress and improve your overall wellbeing. There are also art walks, history treks and other active events as well as a full range of spa services. Another big trend I’m seeing, and it’s one I fully endorse, is the Digital Detox vacation. That’s where everyone disconnects from their devices to spend time really connecting. When you turn off the outside distractions, you can be more present in the moment, which helps you connect more deeply and relax more fully.

Y&S: Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us, Amy. Any last tips for our readers?

Just

!

Go ForTravel it

AK: I just want to encourage everyone to reach out and

let me help make your dream vacation a reality, that’s my passion. There are so many opportunities at every price point, and Adelman is here to help you explore the world and your interests. Let’s set up coffee to start planning your perfect getaway! For more information on how to find your perfect getaway, contact Amy Kemper at akemper@adelmantravel.com, by phone (800-749-7116) or visit our website at www.adelmanvacations.com.
