New Year, New YOU! Lose weight, quit smoking, find a new job, be a better friend, daughter, wife, mother and get out of debt! Does this sound familiar? Millions of americans will resolve to change their lives in the New Year, but mixing too many resolutions in the pot is a recipe for disaster. So, here are a few tips to gear up for a fail-proof fresh start. Choose just three resolutions for the New Year, and if you’re like most people, you’ll accomplish one. This year, my eating and exercise habits could use a little attention. I also want to focus on changing my financial fitness. Financial fitness is a resolution I cannot afford to overlook with retirement around the corner. So, this year I’m going to get fit and flex my financial muscle. Write down your resolutions with specific goals and outcomes. What’s the plan?

According to Statista charts, the most common New Year's resolutions are eating healthier (37%), exercising more (37%) and focusing on self-care (24%). People don’t achieve their goals for many reasons, but having manageable and reasonable expectations and celebrating the smallest positive changes will keep motivation high. Change takes time, effort and patience. Adding biohacking techniques can give us an effective shortcut! At Radiance Float + Wellness, our services can help all 98% of the above resolution-makers, while providing the biohacking services to give you the results you are looking for, and in record time! One of the most popular and effective services for fat loss, cellulite removal, and a non-invasive anti-aging facial is the Cryoskin device. Using the latest in advanced technology, the Cryoskin has been shown to help people lose ½” to 1 ½” in 28 minutes! This biohacking success is achieved through thermal shock and cryolipolysis on the CryoSlimming setting. First, the smooth wand warms the skin which brings fat cells to the surface. Then the wand rapidly cools to freeze the water in the fat cells selectively, sparing muscle, tissue or skin cells, just like when you place water in the freezer it expands. That same expansion occurs in the fat cell and breaks the integrity of that cell forever! Results have been clinically proven and 38%-45% fat loss was achieved after 5 sessions over ten weeks. Those results are will certainly keep motivation high and keep you working towards your lifestyle goals.

Come to Radiance Float+ Wellness to experience Cryoskin. A new year, a new you! Be Well, Zinia Thomas, M.D. Chief Healing Officer and Biohacker Medical Director and Co-Owner of Radiance Float + Wellness

Sundaily gummies are the world’s first gummy for sun protection. We all know how harmful sun exposure is to our skin. Sunscreen, while an essential part of every sun protection regimen, doesn’t provide the complete protection we need to stay healthy. Sundaily gummies help fill the gaps when other products let us down. They’re the missing piece of our sun protection toolkit for skin health and beauty. Sundaily gummies are based on the active ingredient polypodium leucotomos, a fern extract from Ecuador backed by 30+ years of research for sun protective properties, including blinded human clinical trials done at Harvard. Our mission is better sun protection, backed by rigorous science, that lets us live a full, healthy life outdoors. Check us out at getsundaily.com!

SPA&BEAUTY

Living the Vibrant Life By Joseph A. Muccini, MD

Truly, living a vibrant life starts with simplicity. When it comes to appearance, try to focus on one small thing that would increase confidence. Maybe it’s newly appearing ‘worry’ lines, or a dull surface to one’s face, or the recent emergence of a resting expression that hides the happy and vibrant person inside. There are inexpensive little things that can help us represent ourselves outwardly in a way more aligned with how we feel inwardly. Less involved procedures such as dermaplaning, Botox, or a even fillers can help while not “breaking the bank.” As with any small step, these procedures are not about perfection or going for a twentyyears younger change in appearance. Rather, the focus is on improvement.

We just enjoyed a wonderful (probably hectic) holiday season, where there was a lot of planning, rushing, making sure everyone meaningful to us was taken care of, and attending to year-end details. But now we are facing a new year, passing through a season of frenzy followed by cold and hunkering down, flirting with resolutions, self-reflection, and reevaluating ourselves in the coming months.

For those of us contemplating a healthier diet and lifestyle, perhaps resolve to eat fewer carbs. Start with cutting out one thing you can do without for a week, like bread, and see how it feels after that diminutive change. Or walk around the store an extra time through the aisles when doing life’s necessary shopping to get in some extra steps. We don’t need to run a marathon to improve our health!

Someone once said the hardest thing about making an end is making the beginning. Why not make small goals we can meet and build on them, instead of starting out with such a tough resolution that we are sure to be disappointed? Living a vibrant life connotes to us a positively alive life, energized and feeling good about ourselves. The ‘vibrancy’ implies good vibrations, not just being felt by us, but emanating from us. And if we vibrate positively, it is easy to build upon this.

We are best served by choosing those steps, however small, that move us in the right direction and make us more satisfied with ourselves. Believe it. And others will catch that vibe when they see us too. Adding up small things is not just about making us look better to ourselves or to anyone else. It’s not just about how we look. It is about how we feel and how we are. That is a living a vibrant life.

Positive feelings create additional positive feelings, and they make us feel confidant, more energized, and more effective. Being happy with ourselves, not in an overweening or narcissistic way, but in a contented way, creates deep personal satisfaction and confidence, even as we strive to continuously improve ourselves. This not only plays a role in our own experience of happiness and positivity, but it also makes us the kind of people others want to be around. So what small steps can we take to feel more vibrant and more positively alive? Make simple moves. Do one small random act of kindness a week for someone who does not expect it. Buy a stranger a cup of coffee. Don’t we feel, and share, pleasure from such an act? It’s contagious!

Multitasking for Self-Health By Traci Coughran

Life Can Overwhelm You if You Let it Life is busy. I am sure many of you know the feeling of not having enough hours in a day to accomplish all you need to do. Finding time to take care of yourself in addition to all of your other responsibilities often seems overwhelming and impossible. I understand being busy. I have two full-time jobs that often both require overtime. I am also a wife and mother to three teenagers. Juggling all of life’s daily responsibilities and emotions takes a toll on my body and often leaves me feeling as if there is no time to breathe. (Sound familiar?) One of my full-time jobs is owner of Feel Good Infrared, an infrared sauna studio. Using infrared saunas, I personally have experienced pain relief, muscle tension relief, stress reduction, and skin improvements. It is my go-to place when I need to heal myself. I usually spend 40 minutes in the sauna and multitask during this time by letting the sauna do great things for my body while I focusing on my mental health. Infrared Saunas Help You Use Time to the Fullest Today, I spent my first 20 minutes in the infrared sauna just sort of zoning out. I turned on a Naturescape and watched

the waves roll in on the screen in front of me while I felt the infrared warming me from the inside out. I just relaxed in a meditative state, feeling like I had escaped to the beach. Then the alarm I set went off. With my mind refreshed, I picked up a pencil and paper and wrote down my thoughts as efficiently as if I had just spent the last 20 minutes on a beach. I figured out a timeline for my weekend in which I would be able to accomplish all I needed to do. I left the sauna with my muscles relaxed, my body invigorated, and my mind at peace. I highly recommend carving out at least a little of your sauna time for calmness. Even just five minutes of letting go and stilling the mind can be incredibly refreshing. The saunas at Feel Good Infrared are equipped with computers and projection screens so you can watch our Naturescapes or log into your own content to view. This allows for endless options of both relaxation or productivity while you sauna, including: • Watch an entertaining show or a Naturescape • Watch something educational • Stretch • Listen to a podcast • Sketch thoughts/plans on paper

•P rayer, meditation, or quiet thoughts and reflection •B ring a friend for peaceful conversation

The Payoff In addition to feeling both relaxed and invigorated, expect to leave the sauna knowing you just did something that will improve your cardiovascular system and boost your immune system. You may reap the benefits of reducing pain from inflammation, reducing toxins, and stimulating the mitochondria in your cells for days. You can leave the sauna Feeling Good about what you just accomplished and did for your body.

The Benefits of Hiring a Life Coach and Why You’re Worth It By Lynn Schroeder, Business and Life Coach

Life coaching is gaining in popularity everyday — that’s because it works! Coaching is NOT about fixing something that’s broken! A coach simply serves as a guide to help you overcome your limiting beliefs, enabling you to succeed. As we approach the New Year, perhaps you feel in need of some outside direction and guidance. Here are a few benefits of coaching:

Coaches help you make the right decisions As you learn more and more about yourself, a coach will help you learn to trust your own instincts and decisions. This will help you achieve success and let you walk in freedom.

Coaches teach personal accountability A personal coach teaches a client to hold themselves accountable and not rely on others to hold their feet to the

fire to accomplish goals. This also helps you overcome your fears and assume more responsibility for your personal and professional growth.

Coaches are trained listeners Coaches are trained to listen beyond what is shared, can help work through limiting beliefs, and recognize stumbling blocks that continue to get in a client's way. A coach can help a client begin to think in different ways and create new solutions.

Coaches help you find a new way of thinking You’ve most probably heard the saying “nothing changes unless something changes.” A coach is not limited by the same beliefs and thinking that the client may be stuck in. Coaches will assess your obstacles and eliminate them with a step-by-step action plan.

Coaches are neutral This ensures that the client’s day-today life will get unbiased coaching. The coach operates from an outside position to engage the client in powerful coaching conversations by asking the right questions. This enables breakthroughs that will cause a shift in your life. Coaches are in no way supposed to be authoritative and they are definitely not there to tell you what to do.

Coaches are trained visionaries They encourage you to realize your true, unique self and discover your potential and inner strength to live your life to the fullest.

Coaches ask questions Asking questions can promote a new awareness for the client. Offering different perspectives can also compel a client to grow outside the issues that created the problem in the first place.

Blending Body and Mind in the New Year Positive Thoughts Do you remember the old saying, “Be careful what you wish for?” It is a truer statement than you may realize. The universe gives us exactly what we ask for, both positive and negative. This is also referred to as “The Law of Attraction.” Be mindful of your thoughts and words always; they are your conversations with the universe. Instead of saying, “I think I’m catching a cold,” for example, replace that with: “Thank you universe for blessing me with perfect health.” Our thoughts and feelings create our reality.

Sound Music that is uplifting such as New Age, Native American, Instrumental, Nature Sounds and Sanskrit Mantras are all highly vibrational and will in turn raise your energy vibration. The frequencies and vibrations emitted from singing bowls and tuning forks are very beneficial as well.

Gemstones Not only do gemstones do a wonderful job of raising anyone’s vibration, they also offer great protection from absorbing others’ negative energies by carrying them on your person or placing them around your home. High vibrational stones such as selenite and amethyst are good choices, but always let your intuition be your guide when choosing stones.

Your Own Internal Fountain of Youth A Chat With the PRP Experts

Winterize Your Skincare at.... a boutique medspa

In 2009, Dr. Jacques Otto, practicing Cosmetic Medicine at the Harley Street Cosmetic Clinic in London, published his findings for Dermatologic and Volumetric Rejuvenation of the face utilizing Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP had been utilized in the Orthopedic arena for a number of years, but in 2009 it was new to the cosmetic world. As we age, each cell in our body ages. That aging process means the normal cellular activity of regeneration slows down. Our cells need to be reminded to keep a tempo consistent with youth in order to maintain a youthful state. In 2018, one (1) application of PRP annually will provide your face and body with a healthy base for all other treatments to build upon and multiple treatments will correct and restore the treated area – naturally.

What is PRP? Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an autologous source of restoration — your own internal fountain of youth — its benefits now being applied to dermatology, facial rejuvenation, hair restoration, and rejuvenation of both female and male sexual organs. Platelets are a very small but complex component of the blood. When applied to open skin or injected into strategic locations, the platelets serve as mediators of a variety of growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines which in turn stimulate the production of collagen, elastin, new cells, and the activation of hair follicles resulting in restoration of the treated area.

PRP for Facial Rejuvenation PRP works well for fine and deep lines, acne or other scarring, and the regeneration of volume loss. PRP causes collagen and elastin production, but that is not all. Collagen is thought of as the mortar between the bricks. PRP will generate new bricks — or new cells of skin or fat (necessary for volume) — as well as replace the mortar. The outcome is dependent on the “PRP savoir faire” of the professional performing the services, the concentration of the PRP, the health condition of the one being treated, and the application. PRP is a source for teaching your skin to “remember and rebuild”.

YOGA&FITNESS

Medium Effort is Best Effort

By Angie Campbell

Cultivating awareness, interoception and proprioception is the true goal of yoga –- the union of body, mind and heart. This integration is the elusive and golden place where the virtue really lives. With a medium-effort practice we can listen deeply, know ourselves more fully, and celebrate this understanding via optimal health. Our society glorifies overworking and constantly pushing oneself to the extreme. This is carried into some yoga practices and unfortunately, the motion and muscle activation from drastically strenuous postures can have a suboptimal effect on our bodies both physiologically and biomechanically. Many people have mental blocks to slowing down their world and letting go of the grind. To them, a medium effort can sometimes not feel like enough. Despite the popularity and pull to be extreme, as a yoga teacher I feel a

responsibility to teach medium effort because of the amazing holistic benefits. A yoga class that is a bit slower paced, intelligently sequenced and moderately cued can be a great place to begin. Our connective tissue is primed for top performance when it’s not trying to protect us. Our mental state is primed for linking mind and body when it’s not overwhelmed. When we are not under a stress response and we move intelligently, we embody the essence of balance. We begin to move like divine, well-oiled machines. The Sanskrit words for why we practice yoga are: Chit Ananda. Chit can be translated as realizing our true nature and Ananda means bliss. It is not easy, but it is sure proven to be meaningful. Medium effort is the easeful, elegant place where thought, breath, and movement are fluid. It is where power is generated without strain. Try making

The Revolutionary Breakthrough in Bone and Muscle Performance Everybody Is Talking About Jana - 54, Megan - 23, members since Feb. ‘18

“My doctor recommended OsteoStrong to me after I started experiencing side effects from osteoporosis medication. After learning there was also a benefit for muscles (myofibrils), tendons and ligaments, I decided to have my daughter join with me. Megan was diagnosed with hypotonic muscles as a baby that caused a lack of muscle tone and a significant muscle nerve delay which impacts her reflexes. Poor reflexes have limited her driving capabilities, but after 10 months of OsteoStrong, at age 23, Megan is able to drive by herself and has her own car! I know I’m strengthening MY bones, but Megan’s results are a dream that we never thought would become reality! Thank you OsteoStrong!”

Colt - 27, member since July ‘18

“I originally designed these devices to help my mother with her osteoporosis, and she now is in her 80s with healthy bone density. It is one of the first physical medicine products where you can take a high performance athlete, or a deconditioned elderly person – that’s the whole spectrum – and massively affect their physical performance, whether they’re carrying groceries or breaking a world record.” Dr. John Jaquish, PhD

The Importance of Bones Bones are more important than you may think! From our head to our toes, bones provide support for our bodies and help form our shape. They perform critical functions for the human body including facilitating movement, producing blood cells, storing and releasing minerals and fat, and protecting internal organs. Without a skeleton, you wouldn’t be able to move at all!

Bones and Muscles Work Together The central nervous system will not allow muscles to be stronger than bones can handle. This means no matter how much you work out, you will eventually plateau unless you trigger new bone tissue growth. OsteoStrong offers a new technology that triggers new bone and muscle tissue growth, therefore increasing the strength of your skeletal frame. Joints are also positively affected due to the thickening of tendons and ligaments, often reducing or eliminating joint and back pain.

Whether you are looking for improvement in bone strength because of osteopenia/ osteoporosis, or you’re an athlete wanting an edge on your competition, OsteoStrong can improve your physical performance in ways you never thought possible, at almost any age (8yrs - 92yrs)!

OsteoStrong Benefits May Include: Improved Bone Density Less Joint and Back Pain Improved Balance Improved Posture Better Athletic Performance, at any level. Better Agility

“I started OsteoStrong to see what it would do for my lifts at the gym. The week before OsteoStrong, I did 4X8 of 620 lbs. on leg press, and 4X8 of 365 lbs. on hack squat. Two weeks after starting OsteoStrong I was able to do 4X8 of 800 lbs., and 4X8 of 500lbs, respectively!” Patty - 62, member since September ‘16

“Ten years ago I discovered that I had osteoporosis in my spine. I chose to monitor it and took no injections. Every year, my scans showed no significant changes. I decided to try Osteostrong in 2016. After five months, I had another scan and again had no significant change. But after 22 months of Osteostrong, I had another scan and my spine density increased 8.8%! I now have osteopenia instead of osteoporosis. I was shocked and pleased, as was my doctor. My doctor asked what I was doing differently and I told her that I had been going to Osteostrong...I couldn’t be happier with my results or with Osteostrong! “ Dennis, member since July ‘18

“I had total knee replacement 4 years ago brought on by a lifetime of competitive golf and tennis. I noticed that my “good” knee was tiring out after 16 holes and I was contemplating another knee replacement. After joining OsteoStrong, I no longer feel that way – 18 holes is not a challenge anymore and my “good knee” is holding up better than ever. I would recommend OsteoStrong to anyone!” Lauren - 18, Rowing Team, member since Aug. ‘18

“As an athlete, OsteoStrong has changed the way that my body performs. In as little as a month, I noticed a major decrease in back pain that I’ve had for years AND I’ve broken several personal records! It’s made rowing more comfortable and enjoyable in all aspects!”

Get Fit Without Becoming a Fitness Fanatic By Jessica Phillips

How many of us would declare ourselves as “fit?” Granted there are probably lots of people who may think and claim they are optimally physically fit, but that may or may not be entirely accurate. To be honest, The “Get Moving” message just hasn’t worked out and now 21st-century fitness professionals and successful health transformers no longer view minutes of movement as the metric to watch. People are too busy for timeconsuming, activity-based programs and over the last decade, the focus has shifted onto strength-based exercise for optimal fitness. Researchers have demonstrated that muscle quality is a primary marker of fitness and healthy aging. Muscle quality is a leading indicator of the health of every system of the body including the neurological, skeletal, hormonal, cardiovascular, metabolic and immune systems. The Smart20TM workout is based on muscle fiber physiology and the key to deep muscle fiber activation is achieving the right intensity of effort. Our coaches use advanced technologies to measure the unique muscular ability of each of our clients. Every one-on-one workout is energized by both a coach and motivating real-time digital feedback. Our safe and efficient workout activates more muscle fibers than the conventional exercise by focusing on both concentric and eccentric loading. We are able to activate more muscle fibers than with conventional exercise. Our world-leading training technologies power workouts that are strong enough for elite athletes and smart enough for the not-yet-so-fit. Our clients are able to connect to each workout with digital feedback that gives them complete access to all their exercise history. Strength has been called the primary marker of health and fitness and our connected methodology features the most accurate and informative personal strength tests in the fitness industry. Brian Cygan, Founder and CEO of The Exercise Coach® has been developing and delivering high-quality exercise programs, like his Smart20TM Workout for over 16 years. Through his life-long study of exercise physiology and training methods, he has discovered that brief, focused exercise is the most effective way to achieve strength, weight loss, and overall wellness. This is part of his “integration strategy,” which works for people who are “interested in getting fit without becoming fitness fanatics.” The Exercise Coach® founded in 2000, has been named among The Top Emerging Franchises for the second year in a row by Franchise Business Review and has been featured on ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox News and USA Today.

The Missouri Athletic Club Elevates Yoga and Barre Offerings The MAC’s new state-of-the-art Mind & Body studio is attracting members and instructors By Catie Kassebaum, Missouri Athletic Club Communications Coordinator

In October, the Missouri Athletic Club opened a new Mind & Body Studio designed specifically for yoga and barre classes at its West Clubhouse location in Town and Country. This yoga and barre-specific studio is part of Phase One of a two-phase fitness expansion and renovation project at the West Clubhouse. “Our new Mind and Body studio is a great addition to the fitness department,” said Paul Helfrich, Fitness Manager at the West Clubhouse. “We now have a beautiful studio that will host 20+ classes weekly. It is a cornerstone of making our fitness department and class schedule the best in the area.” The studio is equipped to host both warm and regular yoga classes at the flip of a switch and a variety of barre classes. The studio currently offers seven different types of yoga and can accommodate more classes as interest increases. Since opening, yoga class participation has jumped from around 20 members to nearly 180, and a few classes have been waitlisted. New instructors have played a vital role in the success of the new studio. The MAC hired multiple new instructors from top studios around St. Louis to provide the highest quality classes. “Instructing yoga classes at the MAC is different than anywhere I’ve taught before,” said Stefanie Elsperman, MAC yoga instructor. “The participants genuinely want to be here and most of them have been regularly joining the classes. The fitness staff is always excited and welcoming, which makes instructing here one of the best parts of my day.” Members are also raving about the new studio. “The new studio has a peaceful and quiet atmosphere,” said MAC member Mindy Giacin. “The natural wood look and windows showcasing the pool outside provides a calming vibe even during high-intensity classes. I love that it was made for everyone; my teenage daughter even comes to classes with me now.” In addition to the Mind & Body Studio, Phase One of the project includes an expanded and renovated weight room, new bathrooms, and upgraded check-in desk at the entrance. Phase Two will include two racquetball courts, group exercise classrooms, rooms designed for cardio with new equipment, a spinning studio, a properly-sized functional training room, a Pilates studio, youth areas, and possibly a golf simulator. The MAC has also been renovating fitness spaces at its Downtown Clubhouse. The Club added a new Functional Training Room and Group Exercise Room before renovating the weight room and purchasing new equipment. “At the

Board level, there has been a big push to put the ‘A’ back in our middle name, “Athletics,” said General Manager Wally Smith. “And that’s exactly what these projects have done and plan to do for the MAC. I couldn’t be more excited.” Anyone interested in learning more about the MAC’s new yoga and barre studio and expanded and renovated fitness centers should request a tour by contacting Julie Kueper at jkueper@mac-stl.org or 314-539-4408. Alignment Basics: Tripod Headstand There are many health benefits of turning your world upside down! For starters, practicing handstands and other inversions improve your focus. In addition, you strengthen your arms, back and core, improve circulation to your eyes and brain, and flush built up fluids from your ankles and feet. Perhaps, most importantly, there’s nothing like the confidence boost you get when you learn something new and do something extraordinary!

Step 1: To begin, center yourself facing the long

Step 2: Place the crown of your head on your mat,

edge of your yoga mat. Step your feet wide and point your toes directly forward. Fold your body forward and position your hands under your shoulders, with your fingers facing forward. Guide your hands so they are in line with your toes.

a few inches forward of and center of your hands. Your head and hands create a triangle shape, hence the name Tripod. Set your eyes on a non-moving focal point at your center-line. Lift your heels off the mat and come up on your toes. Squeeze your shoulders around your spine and pull your shoulders away from your ears to avoid dumping weight into the head.

Step 3: Lift higher up on

Step 4: With feet flexed,

the toes with legs straight and in a wide-legged straddle, lift your feet off the ground. Allow the hips and bottom to fall back and land above the shoulders.

draw legs toward your center line. Press your heels toward the ceiling and pull your toes toward the ground. Keep your eye gaze locked on your focal point to help with balance.

Pro Tips #1 – Be patient with your body. Give yourself time to stretch your hamstrings and inner thighs until you have the flexibility to maintain straight legs in a wide-legged stance. Do this until your head reaches the yoga mat. Getting to Step 2 may take some time and forcing your head to the mat without proper alignment will not help you achieve headstand faster. More likely, you will stunt the process. #2 – Going upside down can test your bravery. Before attempting Steps 3 and 4, practice lifting your heels in a wide-legged straddle often (as shown in Step 2). This will give you a sense of what it's like to have weight on your head and hands and to build strength and flexibility. #3 – Trust — Trust your body. Trust your timing and don’t rush the process.

Down-dogging through the Snow: The Benefits of Yoga in the Winter Season Even for the most devoted yogi, the winter months can be a drag when it comes to getting motivated to hit the mat. We get it — cold, dark, lonely — who wouldn’t want to stay curled up at home? But consistently skipping your workout could backfire, especially in the colder months when your body (and mind) are most vulnerable to sickness and stress. So don’t take the season off. Here are some reasons to amp up your yoga practice this winter.

Prevent Stiff Joints Colder temperatures create stiff joints and enhance chronic joint pain. The consistent flow of Vinyasa provides a way to maintain joint mobility and increase circulation to loosen any stiffness you might be experiencing.

Protect the Lower Respiratory System If you’ve ever tried to exercise outside when it’s cold you know that breathing in that air creates an uncomfortable burning sensation in the lungs. Yoga is a great way to work on your breathing without

having to expose your body to the harsh temperatures of winter. Steady breathing through the nose warms air before it enters the lungs, thereby eliminating any constrictions that result from cold air entering the body. Breathing through the nose can also help decrease nasal congestion and clear out the sinuses. ...The winter months can be a drag when it comes to getting motivated to hit the mat....Who wouldn’t want to stay curled up at home?

Shed Toxins Practicing yoga in temperatures above 90 degrees can help you sweat out any toxins while simultaneously boosting the immune system. A body flooded with toxins is much more likely to succumb to illness. However, perspiration combined with yogic movement and breathing can help cleanse the body of viruses and congestion.

Elevate Your Mood It’s no secret that the holidays are a stressful time. Everything from the strain on our wallets with holiday shopping, to the stress on our bodies with endlessly packed calendars. Nine Ways to Relieve Stress By Dr. Nick Barnes

Stress is often classified as a negative emotion, but a certain amount of stress can make you more resilient to life’s challenges and obstacles. “The right amount of stress—whelmed but not overwhelmed—can be a great motivator,” says Susan David, Ph.D., in Emotional Agility, and “as uncomfortable as it feels at times, it’s the stress that keeps us moving forward.” You cannot completely avoid stress, but you can learn to more effectively manage it so chronic levels don’t impede your health, happiness, and overall well-being. “The effects of stress are shaped by our thoughts, attitudes and beliefs,” says Mark Hyman, MD,in this book The Blood Sugar Solution. “We can change what we think and believe, and we can reduce the impact of daily stress on our lives as a result. You shouldn’t believe every stupid thought you have!”

Here are Ten Natural Stress Relief Strategies!

to stress and the other obstacles life regularly doles out.

1. Eat nutrient-dense foods: Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as wildcaught salmon and freshly ground flaxseed, for instance, can support brain health and better manage stress levels. Magnesium can help calm you to reduce anxiety and stress. L-theanine, an amino acid that gives green tea its calming effect, can also reduce stress. So can Rhodiola Rosea, an adaptogenic herb that can positively impact stress hormones and energy metabolism.

6. Get quality sleep: You feel more focused and resilient to coping with stress after a good sleep.

2. Avoid foods that exacerbate stress: You also want to avoid foods that trigger or exacerbate stress, including trans fats and foods high in sugar. When you eat sugary, processed foods, your blood sugar increases. Your adrenal glands secrete more cortisol (your stress hormone) to manage those blood sugar levels. 3. Be mindful: For a few moments every day, practice being completely present in whatever task you do. Give it your full attention and you’ll likely find stressful thoughts fall away. 4. Visit your chiropractor: Research shows chiropractic care makes an ideal way to better learn stress management. Protecting your spine from neurological interference makes a great way to handle emotional and mental stress. 5. Exercise consistently: One of the best natural stress releases is exercise. Exercising consistently releases feel-good endorphins, but it also helps you become more resilient

7. Be patient with yourself: We live in a fast-paced society that oftentimes pushes stress management to the back burner. Most of us didn’t learn to manage stress growing up. In fact, we were often encouraged to take on more responsibilities or push stressful feelings aside. 8. Put everything into perspective: Ask yourself whether this situation will impact your life in a year from now. Most stressors don’t pass that test. 9. Do something fun and active: Laughter and joy can dissolve stress! The principles of getting healthy are simple but actually doing it can be difficult in our culture. Please let us know what we can do to help you reach your health and healing goals! Dr. Nick Barnes is on a mission to transform the way his patients view and manage their health in order to prevent and reverse sickness and disease so that they can live to their God- given potential without the use of drugs or surgery! Asking for Help is Often the First Step to Mental Health Wellness By Ed Katcher

Have you heard the old story of a woman who is in her backyard frantically looking for something? Her neighbor asks, “What are you looking for?” The lady replies, “My earrings. I lost them in the living room.” The neighbor asks, “If you lost them in the living room, why are you looking in the backyard?” The lady says, “The living room is too dark. It is nice and bright out here.” We often look to solve our problems in the bright sun when the real answers might be harder to find and out of immediate sight. There is also the story of a 60-year-old married man who finds a fairy that will grant him one wish. He tells the fairy, “I want to be married to a woman 30 years younger than me.” In a flash, he is 90 years old. Not only is it difficult to find where the answer to our real problems are hidden, but we must also be careful and define what it is that we truly need and want. The woman will never find her earrings in the backyard and the man was already married to a lovely lady his own age, and no he did not want to be 90 years old. It is not against the rules to get a little help. Remember counseling is for all of us. If you live on this planet there will be times when we need just a little help getting out of the backyard and heading for the real issues. Let a counselor, psychologist or therapist help open the door to the real room that contains your issues. Almost all insurance companies cover counseling and most of the time a very few sessions can begin to help bring about some degree of relief. Exercise, eat well, seek help and live a vibrant life. It’s a new year and we are writing our goals and planning for the year ahead. Was the previous year hard? Was it amazing? However it went for you, setting new goals each year is a great way to start out the year. According to a recent poll, the most common New Year’s resolutions include: Exercise more (38%) Lose weight (33%) Eat healthier (32%) Take an active approach to health (15%)

These goals are similar in that they all are focused on health and wellness. Most of us attempt to be health conscious on some level. The problem is, most of us do not know where to look for help. Perhaps we do not feel heard or understood when we speak to our family, friends, or doctor. We aren’t sure where to turn for a comprehensive road map to complete wellness. Our current health care approach pays enormous attention to acute conditions, relieves symptoms, and provides treatment through various specialists trying to cure the disease of each organ. Modern (allopathic) medicine views

patients as several independent systems. Functional medicine looks at a person as a single entity, and it believes that everything is interconnected. It attempts to find the root cause of the ailment and pays specific attention to the characteristics of the patient to provide a personalized remedy and treatment.

www.yosostl.com 314.645-9642 stlouisyogasource@gmail.com 6170 Delmar Blvd.

This is exactly what you will find in our office. We strive to get to the root cause of each patient’s specific health issue. Whether that be a pain issue or perhaps a more complex issue such as low energy, weight gain, brain fog, hormonal issues, low libido, migraines or digestive issues, our goal is to help provide a comprehensive road map to complete wellness for every one of our patients.

Our focus is on women’s health, including pre and post natal as well as pediatric and traditional chiropractic care, massage, nutritional counseling, functional medicine and lactation counseling.

AN EPIDEMIC OF PAIN

Aspen Class IV Laser Therapy Can Help By Dr. Brenda Kingen

Pain is one of the top health problems in the United States. An estimated 50 million Americans live with chronic pain caused by disease, disorder or accident. An additional 25 million people suffer acute pain resulting from surgery or accident. The most common types of pain are arthritic conditions, sprain/strains, tendonitis and fibromyalgia.

The following are common questions we get about laser therapy: How are treatments administered? Treatments are performed by positioning the laser handpiece approximately ½â€? directly above the skin and surrounding the area of injury and pain with the laser treatment beam.

How many treatments are needed? The Class IV Laser Therapy produces results quickly. For most ACUTE conditions 5-6 treatments is all that is needed. CHRONIC conditions take longer and might require 6-12 treatments. While these are the averages, each person is unique and healing time varies by person and condition.

How long will the treatment take? Depending on the condition, treatment times for this drug-free, non-invasive procedure will last on average 5-10 minutes but is based on the size of area, depth of penetration needed, and condition being treated.

Will the treatment hurt? Most patients notice a warm, often soothing feeling. There is no pain associated with a treatment. Many patients also experience reduced muscle tension and tightness, reduced inflammation and improved range of motion.

36 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019

When can normal activity begin again? The moment a person leaves the clinic, they may resume normal daily activity. It is important to remember not to overexert for a few days, as the body is still healing.

How does class iv laser therapy work? When the photons of laser light penetrate the skin and underlying tissue, they are absorbed by the cells, and converted into energy, healing energy.

What advantage does class IV laser therapy have over other forms of treatment? The treatment does not require the use of drugs or surgery, and there are no dangerous side effects or risks. In addition, Laser therapy provides enhanced treatment outcomes faster than any other treatment modality.

The dawning of a new year is upon us, inviting us to create the traditional New Year’s resolutions in an effort to start fresh. Why do we make these promises to ourselves to change as the clock chimes at midnight? Our reasons are as unique as our fingerprints; we want to change something about ourselves and the calendar provides a concrete timestamp for us to put thoughts into motion. Some of us want to lose weight or stop an addictive habit, or perhaps we want to get a new job, or a new partner, or become an artist. The list is endless, ranging from daily doses of plans to make things different to existential thoughts of wonder. The lengths of which we are each willing to go through to achieve these new ideas of change are again unique to each of us.

Sun Safety Wrinkles Away Yoga For Energy Eat Clean Yoga Weekends

The story behind these resolutions often sets us up for success or failure. When you consider your thoughts for change, take pause and ask if there is hope or fear lurking in the midst. I hold fast to a basic truth in my life: Our stories matter. They provide the blueprint of our journey, and we will always view our current experiences based on our past. Some view this as a negative, while others are reminded that there is always some beauty to be found in our history, or more importantly, who we have become because of, or in spite of, our stories.

Our story invites us to take a piece of our history into our future; therefore, consider evolving into 2019 with lessons learned

and proactive steps supporting growth and abundance. When creating your list of “resolutions,” or things you wish you do or change in 2019, consider the following as a guide to help create a year of gratitude, wisdom, and joy. Gratitude: There is always something to be grateful for (even if it takes you awhile to come up with something). List things you are grateful for daily and watch as you become more aware of thankful moments. Wisdom: Pace yourself, and learn when to hold tight and let go. Take pause to respond to situations mindfully, rather than react impulsively. Strive to thrive in all areas of your life. Joy: Take time to feel the pulse of the earth. Create a plan to breathe, smile, and explore something new. A new year brings fresh opportunities for us to bring our best selves forward. Wishing you a year full of joy, health, and peace. Cheers! Salute! à votre santé! L’Chaim!, Cin-Cin! By Debra Farnell

All over the world the gesture of sharing a drink is a universal language of friendship and celebration. We drink wine together and toast to health, to life! A quick google search of “health benefits of wine” will result in over 250,000,000 articles and links discussing various health benefits of drinking wine. But there is a dirty little secret in the bottles of most massproduced wine. Pesticides, chemical additives, and sugars which producers use to capture sameness and establish predictability from bottle to bottle, year after year. They do this because wine is a tricky business. When it comes to their growth cycle, grapes tend to march to the beat of their own drum. Their natural flavor, color and growing cycle is driven by nature. Pesticides, chemical additives and sweetener also make it possible to maximize yields and hide flaws that may exist in those bottles, like bacteria and other unpleasant elements. Unfortunately, this processed wine is chemically-altered and completely unnatural, and you can taste it. Scout & Cellar wines are made the way nature intended with grapes and less than *50 ppm of sulfites, *always less than 100 ppm. We are committed to sourcing chemical-free, totally delicious wine from around the world. Hand selected by a level 3 sommelier, all of our wines are third-party tested to ensure that they are clean-crafted. What are sulfites? Sulfites are naturally occurring antioxidant and antibacterial compounds in grapes and are utilized to protect the wine from oxygen until it reaches your glass. Because of the slow-crafted, intentional way Scout & Cellar wines are made, they require very little sulfur additions to remain stable. Most have less than 50ppm, all must have less than 100ppm. As a point of reference, the FDA allows up to 350ppm. It is time to enjoy the health benefits found in wine, including but not limited to antioxidants and probiotics. Scout & Cellar wines compliment the many different nutritional lifestyles that are popular today.

Most of our wines are vegan, moving towards becoming all vegan. Scout & Cellar wines are all gluten-free, paleo-friendly and low-carb. Purchase online at www.thepurewine.com or call Debra Farnell, Independent Consultant to schedule a tasting at 303-807-6104

FOOD for THOUGHT

Healthy Butternut Squash & White Bean Chili Prep time: 15 mins Cook time: 1 hour Total time: 1 hour 15 mins

INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp ghee (or unsalted butter) 4 garlic cloves, chopped 1 yellow onion, chopped 1 medium butternut squash, peeled and cubed (about 4-5 cups) 4 cups low sodium chicken broth 2 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp kosher salt 2 cans Cannellini beans, drained & rinsed 5 parmesan rinds 3 sprigs fresh rosemary Optional Toppings: plain greek yogurt fresh cilantro tortilla chips salt & pepper RECIPE NOTES: Make sure you have a good blender and that your squash is soft after being cooked. Pulse the blender so you can get the naturally creamy texture. Seriously. You’d think that butternut squash has heavy cream in it. It's just that good! You can serve this like you would a chili bar — bring on the chips, the greek yogurt (or sour cream), cilantro, and cheese if you will. Season with salt & pepper to to taste. Did I mention there are only 233 calories per two cup serving? Two cups actually is filling for this soup. So splurge and do 4 cups and you’ll STILL be under 500 calories.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. First place a heavy bottom pot or Dutch oven on your stove top over medium heat. Then add your ghee or fat you plan on using. 2. Let it melt and heat for an additional 20 seconds. Add your garlic. Saute until fragrant (about 30 seconds). 3. Add your onions and cook until just translucent, about 5 minutes. 4. Next add your butternut squash cubes, mix and cook for an additional 5 minutes. 5. Add your broth, bring to a boil and then lower heat to a simmer for about 20 minutes or until squash is fork tender. 6. Once squash is tender, working in batches, add your soup to the blender and blend until smooth. Continue to do this until all of the soup is blended. 7. Return blended soup back into heavy pot and bring heat up to medium low. 8. Add the garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper and kosher salt. Mix. 9. Add your rinsed Cannellini (white beans), parmesan rinds & fresh rosemary sprigs. Stir together. 10. Return heat to low and allow soup to cook for an additional 30 minutes. This will allow flavors to blend more evenly throughout and beans will soak up more flavor. You may continue to simmer this soup, stirring occasionally, if you have guests over. The longer it simmers/sits together, the more powerful the flavor! 11. Once ready to eat, remove the rinds & fresh rosemary sprigs. 12. Serve soup evenly into bowls and top with optional toppings such as greek yogurt, cilantro, salt & pepper. Chips on the side are a bonus and make this more fun, though aren't necessary. Save Time & Money with TotallyTrips By Jennifer Evans

The other day a friend of mine told me that they think they have appendicitis or possibly pancreatitis”. I was naturally alarmed and asked, what did your doctor say? They said they hadn’t been to the doctor yet, then added that they guessed it could also be gas and there was no way to tell for sure. I shook my head and said, “that’s what a doctor is for.” Just like my friend who wanted to be her own doctor by searching her symptoms online, I run into people who think they are experts in travel because they can search flights online. They say, I saved $25 on my flight! I look at their flight details and don’t have the heart to tell them that they have an 18-hour layover and I could have saved them $100 on a direct flight. My name is Jennifer Evans and I run a fullservice travel agency dedicated to providing the best possible vacation experience. At TotallyTrips we have been delivering premium vacations for over a decade. Why does this make a difference to you? Our staff has over 100 years of experience putting together premium, specially tailored experiences for our guests. We travel to these destinations collecting firsthand knowledge which enables

us to make sure you get exactly what you want out of your vacation. Many people are under the impression that booking with a travel agent is more expensive, but that’s not true. An Interview with Deana Crouch of Adelman Travel

Y&S - What has been your favorite romantic destination both domestically and abroad? Why? The most romantic destination has to be a Mediterranean Cruise. The ports of call are so beautiful. Monaco and Nice were my favorite ports. The views are spectacular. Seeing where the Grand Prix was held right in the middle of town in Monaco was unbelievable. Walking along the boardwalk in Nice enjoying the Mediterranean Sea views was spectacular.

Y&S - Was there any spot in particular during that trip that was memorable? The color of the Mediterranean sea is amazing. Just strolling on deck and watching the water and sailing into these ports is exciting. A private driver took us to a high point in Monaco, looking over the city of Monaco and out to sea was breathtaking.

Y&S - Is there a cruise line you would recommend? If so, Why? Oceania is a wonderful cruise line. They are known for their incredible food and excellent customer service. They really pamper you and sail to the most beautiful ports all around the world. Their spas are some of the best at sea.

Y&S - What part of your job are you most passionate about?

The part of my job I am most passionate about is finding the perfect vacation for a client. I recently had a client call when they came back and she told me she cried when she had to come home. The resort was so perfect and they had such an incredible time celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. It gives me so much satisfaction when I hear clients will have wonderful memories that will last them the rest of their lives.

Y&S - What is the one item you can’t leave home without when traveling? One item I must have traveling is a big scarf. I use it on the plane for a blanket if it is cold. It works for a shawl in the evenings and is always good as an accessory around my neck to dress up an outfit.

Do you have a jet-lag trick? I never experience jet-lag. I always stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. Do not drink alcohol while flying. I always stay awake if it is a daytime flight and try to sleep if it is an evening flight. Don’t take a nap if it is daytime when you get to the destination or you will be awake all night. Try to eat light meals. I never dwell on how long the flight is. It is just an adventure, I’m going to watch some good movies, read a good book, play a few games and keep my mind busy not thinking about how long the flight is.

46 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019

It is important to get up every couple of hours and walk the aisle several times. This works for me!

Y&S - Which items are always in your carry-on bag? In my carry-on bag, I always have my scarf, lotion, lip balm, a change of clothes, a good book and magazines to read, makeup and toothbrush.

Y&S - What have you learned after so many years of traveling that you would like to share with our readers? I have learned to enjoy the adventure of traveling. Learning about other cultures makes me a better, more compassionate person and thankful I was born in America. Please contact me, Deana Crouch, to plan your incredible journey. email: dcrouch@adelmantravel.com phone: 1-800-325-4792 or visit our website: www.adelmanvacations.com
