LOOKING FORWARD YMCA OF GREATER KANSAS CITY | ANNUAL REPORT

BELIEVE ACHIEVE SUCCEED OUR MISSION The YMCA of Greater Kansas City, founded on Christian principles, is a charitable organization with an inclusive environment committed to enriching the quality of family, spiritual, social, mental and physical well-being. A UNITED WAY AGENCY

LOOKING FORWARD Too many people in our community don’t have the resources and support they need to be able to look forward to successfully achieving milestones throughout different stages of life, such as… learning to read swimming across the pool by yourself for the first time making friends at camp walking across the stage to accept your diploma beginning a new journey to live a healthy lifestyle starting a family volunteering your time to help those in need

Our vision at the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, Safe Passage: Passport for Life, is to change that. Our vision is that people of all ages have access to the resources and experiences that provide safe passage through life’s many chapters, ensuring a passport for life. In 2012, we looked forward to making this vision a reality and examined what the future could hold for not only our Y, but also for our community. We are excited to share with you in this annual report the results of these efforts—our strategic plan for 2012-2022. You might say the Y is going through a safe passage of our own. Our 10-year strategic plan signifies a new phase of life for our Y. We’ve evolved over more than 150 years of serving the greater Kansas City community, and we continue to evolve to best serve the needs of our community with the resources we have. Our plan will help us navigate the transitions as we serve our community for the next 10 years and beyond. We’re grateful for the support we’ve already had from volunteers, staff and the community to develop this plan. We know there will be some challenges along the way as we move forward, but we also know we can overcome them when we work together. We look forward to working with you to strengthen the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility and provide all ages a safe passage through life’s many transitions.

our commitment

who we are OUR values

With a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the YMCA of Greater Kansas City is committed to strengthening communities. The Y engages men, women and children—regardless of age, income or background—to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve the nation’s health and well-being, and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors. With a history of serving the Kansas City area since 1860, the Y has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change.

Character Development gives us the ability to meet our mission. We commit to these principles that reflect the Y’s beliefs about the pathway to achieving the greatest impact for our community.

FOR KAREN, WORKING WITH CHILDREN AS THE DIRECTOR AT THE Y’S OUTDOOR SUMMER DAY CAMP AT CAMP NAISH IS A JOB LIKE NO OTHER SHE’S EVER HAD. She said the atmosphere at the Y is what makes a difference. “It’s just an incredible place for kids to go where they’re still learning but they don’t even know they’re learning,” she said. She’s alongside youth as they take part in activities that include physical activity, nutrition, and lessons related to science, technology, engineering and math. That means everything from water rockets to a friendly game of Gaga ball. KAREN LOOKS FORWARD TO ANOTHER SUMMER OF CAMP.

WHEN RICH JOINED THE LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA PROGRAM, HE HAD RECENTLY COMPLETED TREATMENT FOR WHAT HAD BEEN INITIALLY DIAGNOSED AS TERMINAL CANCER. And he wasn’t sure how to transition to the next chapter of his life. The 12-week LIVESTRONG at the YMCA healthy living program for cancer survivors was the answer for him. It provided the social interaction he had missed during his treatment, helped him re-gain physical strength and gave him hope. “It was a great program for me,” he said. “I can actually do things I couldn’t do before.” RICH LOOKS FORWARD TO CONTINUING HIS JOURNEY.

AS PARENTS OF A CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, LISA AND SCOTT HALLIER KNOW HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR ALL KIDS TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY SPORTS. For six years, the Halliers have co-chaired the Challenge Your Fashion fundraiser, which has raised a net total of more than $1.2 million to benefit the YMCA Challenger program and help build the accessible Fred & Shirley Pryor YMCA Challenger Sports Complex. “For us and so many other families, it gives us a place to bring our special needs child and have them able to be themselves,” Lisa said. With a baseball field with inlaid bases, a playground with ramps, and synthetic turf football and soccer field, the sports complex removes barriers for children who may use wheelchairs, walkers or be unsteady on their feet. SCOTT AND LISA LOOK FORWARD TO THE EXPANSION OF THE COMPLEX SO MORE KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS CAN PLAY SPORTS.
