huis clos
Huis Clos explores the binary dynamics between menswear and womenswear by presenting the same architectural shirtdress on both female and male models. In the perspective of working towards unisex fashion, AurÊlie Fontan draws inspiration from traditional religious and ancestral uniforms mixed with a contemporary clinical feel that allows the wearer’s personality to be enhanced by this minimalistic design.
This work was produced as part of the Edinburgh College of Art Fashion Design BA.

adventure of a lifetime
This is a painting of an abstracted cityscape. It is essentially a detailed drawing of George IV Bridge in Edinburgh that has been layered with abstract shapes. The drawing is based on a photograph.The geometry, positive and negative shapes, marks, textures and colours from this photo influenced the abstracted shapes. Music was a major influence in the making process. The rhythms from Coldplay’s Adventure Of A Lifetime (2015) inspired the mark-making. And the album cover design helped to inform the colours I used. The work of Julie Mehretu, James Hugonin and Wassily Kandinsky were influential also. In addition, Intuition and experimentation played a major part of the making-process. Forms were reworked into the canvas through layering.

My work reflects the theoretical underbelly of visual culture in that my deep interest in perception, ways of seeing and subjectivity led me to create a series of images that explore the gap between the objective and the subjective reality. By exploring distortions in oil paint and linear sketches I developed a photorealistic style, ironically paired with the unrealistic distortions, all centred on the allegorical subject of the eye which becomes synonymous with perception. Based in both Suffolk and Edinburgh, I also love experimenting with landscape works and portraiture in light of my theoretical interests.
